You are correct.

Re: [RCSE] River of lift.

2002-03-02 Thread Stephen Syrotiak

Hi Gordon,
Thanks for your believable theory. I've flown my Escape right off the
beach in S. CT wondering all the time what the hell kept it up, at near
spec height. The plane was probably right over the water's edge and
flying like it was in wave. i.e. just hovering at windspeed. I
couldn't believe it was a wave at the time. Surface WS were only 10-12
kt. This happened many times and I landed only because I got bored and
needed an aerobatic fix.

As I recall, we met at the soaring symposium last Mar. or April. How's
that ugly airplane (mantis) of yours doing? :)

cheers.

[RCSE] 48 Wire

2002-03-02 Thread Bill Rakozy

Hey Team,

I’ve looked all over Minneapolis (4 Hobby Stores), for (48” wire)- 1/16”
(.062): for use in my Summa Classic. No hobby shops carry wire in-store
longer than 36”.

RnR (Mark Triebes) said it’s a “special order” item from Ace Hardware. I
stopped at my local ACE and even they didn’t have lengths beyond 36” in
their Master Catalogue.

Can you suggest a source for 48” piano-wire?

Appreciate your suggestions.

have been somewhat unsucessfull.

Both Abernathy's and Hobby town on the east side only have JR (to look at)

Can anyone point me to other hobby shops that are not too far away. I've tried to
call Websters but the best phone numbers I can find for them are all no answer.

Subject: [RCSE] Radio question

Ok, I'm not looking to start a religious war or anything but I'm looking
for a new radio. I first was thinking that the Profi 3030 was what I
wanted, then I was thinking that the stylus would suite my needs while
saving me some money at the same time, but I really like the idea of the
Multiplex Evo (the crystal synthesizer I wouldn't need to stick with 50
Mhz) but I'm sure the cost will be pretty high (my presumption). Then I
stumbled across the Hitec Eclipse with the synth module and started to
think, hmmm.

My type of flying: I fly mostly slope and have started to play with some
electrics but I'm not a big thermal, scale, or complex flying.

What I have now: Airtronics Inifinity on 50Mhz vintage '95

I'd love to hear from members of this list on why I should go for the
MASSIVE flexability of the Profi and a much higher cost to the stylus or
Eclipse.

Thanks in advance,
Tripp

Re: [RCSE] River of lift.

2002-03-02 Thread J.P. Morere

This may be related to the 'onshore/offshore' wind effects. The water
is a temperature moderator, and is usually cooler than the shore.
During the day, the sun heats the shoreline nicely, and thus warms the
air above it, but the water temperature changes very little. This warm
onshore air rises, and is replaced by the cooler offshore air - which is
subsequently warmed and the cycle continues, as long as there is heat
input like sunshine. That 10-12 knot wind you feel is only at surface
level. The air above could be going any which way! Ever noteced that
wherever you are around a VERY large body of water the wind usually is
blowing onshore from over the water?

Good sky;
J.P.

Denny,

Here is a site that carries the 'flashy tape.' It is a site/company
that seems to mostly focus on the Lite Stik. I have not done business
with the company, but they list the tape as--Sparklingly Superior Tape -
$4.25 per roll.

http://www.nyblimp.com/ look for the SS Tape Link.
or go directly to ===http://www.nyblimp.com/ss.htm

Best, Freddie...

Some Automotive paint stores. And they carry most colors. Silver, blue tint, red tint
I think yellow too.

[RCSE] solar balloon as alt. launch method

2002-03-02 Thread hlalibe

Hi,

I posted some weeks ago a message about using an helium balloon as an
alternative launch method, I received some interesting feed-back. I've
looked around and can say that it is technically feasible (it takes
about about a cubic meter of helium to lift 300-500g) but expensive.
Here in Switzerland it would cost me about 50$ per launch, no thanks.

Then I saw a post about asking someone to carry and launch your plane
from a hot air ballons (big ones). There might be an easier way out.
Type solar balloon in your favorite search engines and you'll find
plenty of pages on the topic. Some are very easy to build, just
scotch some black plastic garbage bags together and the sun will do
the rest on a sunny and windless day. To lift 300g you need about a
balloon of 3 or 4m in diameter. I saw a nice plane here weighing just
under 200g. Apparently you can lift a few 100meters high without
problems. Wind is no good though, not a problem here where I live. I
think I'll give it a try.

Critics are welcomed.
