Re: [RCSE] Pierce Arrow Paragon kits...?

Hi rdwooebke,
Ed Slobod, who designed the Paragon, built and flew one with electric motor.
It flew great. I don't have Ed's E mail address but do have his phone no. if needed.

With all this talk of Paragons, has anyone on this list built an
electric Paragon? I'm almost ready to cover my Pierce kit, but I cut
out enough extra parts to make a second fuse with electric conversion
in mind. I'm thinking this would make a good LMR ship. I saw a
photo of one that had been converted on a website, but no info. Any
real world suggestions on motor type, gearbox, controller, prop,
 battery, etc?

Pierce Arrow Paragon kits are above average. The plane is
excellent. Big, stable, easy to fly--one of the best of the flat

Fall Soaring Festivals than any other design. They use to call
Visalia Paragon Country. I believe the plane was originally designed
 for night flying.

I flew a borrowed Pierce Arrow Paramount for my LSF 10K and 2 hour
flights--on what was a test flight off a 100 ft launch to check the
thermal sniffler. Only flight I ever made with that plane.

[RCSE] Pierce Arrow Paragon kits...?

2003-04-01 Thread Jerry Krainock
The origional Paragon Kits were produced by Gene Walloch who was a
production Engineer for Mac/Dac and a master craftsman. Walloch had
tooling for all of the curved parts which were sanded to shape. As an
old freeflighter, Gene's wood selection was superb. If any of the
spruce in the old kits is warped, replace it with new wood.

The Paragon was indeed designed for night flying and was very sucessful
in the light and the dark. I redall that the First contest the Paragon
ws entered in was at Night fly in Canoga Park in 76 or 77. I think Bill
Watson and i both flew the same plane and took first and second. Not a
bad beginning and still the Floater by which all others are measured.

Slobod is still alive and kicking. He is currently prepairing for the
Bent Wing 2 day at Visalia.

Karl,

I would be guessing, but even though a low battery condition exists on your
Lithium battery it should be at least a week possibly a month before it was
low enough to start to lose memory.

Has anyone experienced what really happens and how long after the flashing L
appears does the lithium battery last until it completely dies? Just
wondering in case this happens at an out of town contest if it would still
be safe to fly.

Why worry about what will happen ? Just send it back to Horizion Hobbies
and get a new Lith battery installed--and ask them to check the xmtr over
while they have it. I sent my 388 back last year and got excellent service,
reasonable prices and about a 2-3 week turnaround. No need to push your
luck. Jim

Andrew,

What you say is always a good idea. However, it can be done by the
consumer with some care. I recently got the L on one of my 8103s.
The change over probably made it 'batteryless' for 10 to 15 min. Lo,
and behold, the settings were still there. Maybe there is a big
capacitor in there somewhere that will hold the voltage for a small
period of time.

AFAIK, it has to be unlocked by a tech :( Hence changing the battery
yourself requires extreme care to avoid loss of power during the
process.

I believe if you leave the TX battery connected you can change the
lithium without fear of losing any settings. I think I saw that
in the manual.

2003-04-01 Thread brent douglas
I just got my JR back from Horizon, and they changed that as part of their
standard procedure. All my settings were intact, so I'm betting that if you
have battery power, you can change that out / have it done.

Horizon had my (sorry-*ss) radio back to me inside of 2 weeks, for not much
money: I replaced my elevator/aileron stick and a switch, about 70 bucks
plus shipping.

Good luck,
Brent
