Re: [RCSE] Winch launching... thanks!

2004-11-24 Thread Dick Williamson
Title: Re: [RCSE] Winch launching...
thanks!

Hi Jeff,

I am guessing that you followed the
advice of Anker Berg-Sonne of CRRC. He wrote up his suggestions
along with video images at:

http://flyesl.com/News-y-Articles/featured_article.asp?FORUM_ID=7TOPIC_ID=112

Dick

All the negative stuff that gets posted
where (some deserved Roy!) I thought
I post a positive I learned right here.

To the person who posted a few weeks ago, or months, whatever, about
changing
to my left foot for the pedal since I launch right handed. THANK
FRIGGIN
YOU I think he was with the CRRC.

For me winching launching was a frightening experience every single
time.
When launching with my right foot I'd stumble backwards or otherwise
lose
balance 50% of the time. I approached winching each time with
trepidation. I
switch to standing sideways with my left shoe on the pedal and tossing
the
plane almost over my head as it pulls. It works GREAT!

Knock on wood, now launching is no big deal. I just have to work on
throwing
it straight ahead (I tend to toss it to the left - sometimes WAY to
the
left). Really I don't recall your name, but thanks. That article was
a
revelation and shows again, sometimes the net is worth is weight in
gold. :)

Best wishes,

[RCSE] Wind comments

2004-11-24 Thread John Erickson
Once everyone has found the wind gauge...it's interesting to learn about
ground effect. We had a cross country event out in Lancaster. The wind was
blowing at a moderate clip. If you held the wind meter about 4' off the
ground it was reading 8-10 mph.

Joe W. then took the meter and put it up to about 10' off the ground. I
think he tacked it to a pole or something, I can't quite remember. In any
case, the meter now registered 15-18 mph.

This made sense with what our planes were doing up in the air (read going
backwards). This also shed light on hot landings with ballasted planes.
You're driving into the wind about 50' off the ground, you bring the plane
down to the deck and the speed goes up, much higher than anticipated.

[RCSE] Re: air travel, transporting RC a/c

The best thing I have seen recently is called a SporTube. Its an
expandable polystereyne hard shell carrier designed for snowboards. If
you cant find one on the web or at a retailer let me know, I can give
you a contact number here in colorado to order one. They are 139.00
plus 15.00 shipping. A large number of people are using them to ship,
travel and store their high end molded r/c sailplanes. Each tube holds
two complete planes.

Re: [RCSE] Wind comments

2004-11-24 Thread Mike Smith
That is known in the soaring community as wind gradient. This can also
cause a nice looking approach at what would appear to be the perfect
airspeed, to end either short of target due to the airspeed suddenly
dropping off, or worse, a stall close to the ground. Most of us notice
this happening only after we touch down short of the spot. We can be heard
mumbling something about using too darn much flap ;^)

[RCSE] Needed Plane

2004-11-24 Thread Karlton Spindle
I am looking for a molded plane in So.Cal

[RCSE] Compulsion parts, Dodgson Design Maestro for sale

2004-11-24 Thread Russ Light

All,
I have the following Compulsion parts for sale:
Compulsion
(1) painted fuselage with severe but I think repairable damage,
rudder OK, nose cone has slight crack at open end, with one DS368, one
DS341 servos, Hitec Superslim receiver, 1800 ma NIMH
battery pack, installed, damaged occurred after
getting caught in retriever line on launch
(1) new fuselage, raw, no installation work done, un-painted, w/
rudder bellcrank, fuselage has two very minor dings in
it..easily fixed. One is a penny sized compression ding in mid tail
cone. The other is a small glass fracture on the fuse at the rear of the
slip on nose cone, left side.
(1) wing set, 7035 airfoil, one wing panel repaired after bad
break, have flown since and wings still fly well, not sure if they
will take a full winch launch, (4) DS368 servos installed, with wiring
harness for receiver (my own design)
(1) wing set, FS01 airfoil, right wing broken completely into two
pieces at the flap/aileron joint, the left wing is almost undamaged
except for a small crack at trailing edge flap/aileron joint, I believe
very easily repaired, no servos, damaged occurred after getting caught in
retriever line on launch
(2) wing rods, std dihedral, the other is 7 degrees
(1) horiz stabs set, surfaces in good shape, one stab has the carbon tube
for the joiner rod damaged which I removed - needs some work

I would like to sell everything in one batch. The servos,
receiver, and battery pack go for about $400 new. Asking $400 for
everything, ie plane parts are free or make me an offer. Buyer pays
shipping. Will provide pictures of wings and fuselage, please
e-mail.

Dodgson Design Maestro
I bought this already assembled a few years ago and never got around
to installing the radio gear. Originally came with mechanical mixer
though I removed that with the intent to install computer radio gear,
flaps and ailerons are currently tied together. Not the best
assembly I have seen, wings are covered with monocote but done in
multiple colors. E-mail for pictures
$100 or best offer, buyer pays for shipping

Russ Light

servos throughout (Micro-Maxx in the fuse, Wing-Maxx in the wing), old style
Airtronics plugs, 1400 mah battery pack, 5/8 round carbon rod, Hoopes wing
connectors, McCann nose teeth. Has an extra bagged stab. White fuse/wingstab
tops, red rudder, black wing bottom, blue stab bottom. When I bought the
plane, it had a couple of minor leading edge delams. Both have been reparired,
neither was a structural problem. A great flying plane, I just have a few too
many moldies (yes, it is possible). I can supply a setup for either a Stylus
or EVO-12 for this plane on request. $800 plus shipping from Sacramento, local
pick up OK. Pictures available on request. Please contact me off line.

[RCSE] Wind Gauge - Useful or Not?

2004-11-24 Thread RegDave
One of the guys in the club has had one of the little ball and tube units
for some time. (The RS unit uses the same principal - it's simply differential
pressure similar to a pitot tube.) When he's out there and we're about to get
blown off the field, we check it just to see how manly (or stupid) we may
have been to fly in that much wind.

And of course, there's the problem that what you get on the surface isn't
what happens at altitude. It is not unusual to have surface winds from one
direction and stronger winds at a different velocity and quartering up at
flying
altitude. So a surface measurement may not be too applicable to what's
happening where you're actually flying.

That said, it's a potential tool to fill in the blanks a bit on an educated
guess about what's happening. Below about 5mph, I don't think anyone cares
too much about the wind. Above about 25mph, most folks pack it in and look for
a slope - unless you're in the Midwest and then you throw in ballast and keep
trying 'cause anything less than that is a pretty good day.

So a usable range of 5mph to 30mph or so would seem to fit the bill.
Extending that range to about 60mph would be really handy for sloping - or
maybe for
your kid to check how fast you're driving on the way to the field. The low
price units claim a range of 5mph up to ~ 70mph so they're a decent match
for what we might be doing.

As to accuracy, unless you spend a whole bunch of money, I can't see
anything better than a couple % is going to be available. The La Crosse unit
claims
+/- 0.3%. The PDF file on the RS unit doesn't seem to have an accuracy
specification. However, wind gusts, surface turbulence, thermals blowing
through,
etc. will give a lot more scatter than just the accuracy of the gauge. The RS
unit does not appear to do any interval averaging so the reading fluctuation
may be significant. The La Crosse unit will have a little mechanical inertia
from the anemometer.

Bottom line - for 10 bucks I'd be happy to have one of these in the tool
box. For 40, I'd probably opt for a down payment on a digital servo.

An application for which I'm looking for one of these (and may have found
one in Tulsa). Is for a HS science project. They've got a crude wind tunnel in
the classroom and this would be an inexpensive instrument for them. It's used
for demo purposes and not for hard data so what could be better than a $10
digital wind gauge for students to see that V^2 actually works?

If there's a practical field use for all this, I'm sure Gordy's evaluation
will find it. I'm looking forward to whatever review may come from that.

Happy Thanksgiving!

[RCSE] Wind Gauge

2004-11-24 Thread vmax

I saw the one at Radio Shack and someone posted a link to a wind surfing site that didn't give it rave reviews. If you really want one with accurate readings and a wide speed range, as well as other functions, try one of these
http://www.nkhome.com/
I had one that worked flawlessly until the display went wonky. The factory is only 15 minutes from my house. I called and asked if I could return it, it was out of warranty. When I got there they had a replacement ready and even gave me a tour of the facility. My point being, you get what you pay for and this company definitely rates high on my scale.

has a quality look and feel. With the vertical axis rotating cups, it is
independent of wind direction. On many others, the rotating impeller has a
horizontal axis, making them very sensitive to orientation and changes in
wind direction. Got mine through Glidetek, run by a fellow club member here
in MN.

http://www.glidetek.com/accessories/windspeedcomputer.asp
The Windtronic reads in mph, knots, km/hr or meters/sec, and provides a
readout of instantaneous speed, peak speed recorded, and average speed of
the period that it is turned on. On a slope soaring trip to South Dakota
in September, I recorded average speeds over several minutes in the 55 to 65
mph range at various times on the lip of the slope, and gusts of over 80
mph. (Sideways to the wind, feet spread. knees bent . . . .still get blown
away in the gusts) The specs say it reads to 93 mph, so I doubt that you
will run out of operating range.

[RCSE] Thanksgiving and Religious Holidays.

2004-11-24 Thread Tom H. Nagel

Happy thanksgiving everyone. Tonight we soar with
the turkeys!

Let's all be thankful for being allowed
to perpetrate our aerial sport/hobby; let's give thanks to the folks who provide
us with the great modern, inexpensive electronics
to the guy who invented EPP
foam
to the (recently deceased) guy who
invented NIMH batteries
to George Joy who keeps us charged
up
to Harley who keeps inventing and
perfecting
 to Chuck Anderson for
perspective
 to Gordy for comic relief
to Dave Garwood for getting it all down
in writing and on film
to Daryl and Joe for keeping us
inspired
the farmer at the AMA site for planting
beans this last year instead of corn

 Hey let's all give thanks to US;
we keep ourselves pretty well entertained all year.

Next week is the beginning of the holy
week known locally as Bambidon, or in some of the more urban areas as Deer Gun
Season.

I will be off in a tree somewhere, and
for once, not trying to retrieve a plane. If you write, it may take
me a while to get around to responding.

Please remember that for some, Thanksgiving Day is a
time of cannibalism, whether Turkey or Ham is the main
course...

Happy Thanksgiving to all you Turkeys... and Hams...

I'll be piloting Barney this year in the parade. Look for my white
sneakers walking backwards behind the Barney banner sometime after
10:15A. I've written Hi Mom on the heals since I have to walk
backwards through the whole parade.

[RCSE] High Aspect-RES

2004-11-24 Thread Wes Gibson
I'm looking for a good quality RES to fly next season. The High Aspect-RES
from Art Hobby has caught my eye. Who out there owns one and what is your
opinion of the plane? Does it stand up to a winch launch and does it thermal
well?

I've also been looking at the Hawk RES available at Janco Models. I know
this is a pet plane of the Houston Hawks. So, what's the current opinion of
the Hawk?

Anyone want to recomment another good quality RES? I was considering the
Legionair at one point, but it doesn't appear that the kit will ever become
available. Then there's the AVA, but that's a little out of my price range.
