Re: [RCSE] Limits in R/C Soaring - a proposed discussion

2004-12-03 Thread Ray Hayes
Don Harris had a 3 1/2 hour flight at the first Wood Crafters event in 2002.
WC has always had the Longest flight event and what makes it work is the
entries are limited to one entry per ch. This allows pilots to fly at will.
Other Woody contests in the east have had the same task. I think it is a
neat event to get LSF Achievement duration goals completed.

The Woody only 2005 New Years Postal contest task is the longest
flight...

SOAR's Richard Burnoski and Eric Stenson have entered this year's Postal.

I thought Ray Hayes CD'ed something along those lines for a woody contest

What is the longest actually timed TD flight anyone has witnessed, again,
 no slope factor involved.

Just over two hours, I saw at least three of those in 2004 working LSF
tasks, I being one of those pilots.

[RCSE] The proper way to add washout/twist...

2004-12-03 Thread Adam Till \(Cal\)
Hi folks,

Just curious if anyone knows how washout should be properly added to a
wing. I don't mean how much should be added (that I understand fine),
but rather how the wing should be twisted.

Do you rotate the tip section about the 1/4 chord point? Do you rotate
the tip section about the LE? Does it really matter?

Thanks,
Adam

The 1/4 chord point would be the best choice. But it's not that big of a
concern usually.

If you're cutting a foam core, then yes. Rotate the tip template around the
1/4 chord point.

Thought so, and that's what I'd usually do. This time I'm doodling a
little flying wing that has twist from 1/2 span out, however, and having
a straight LE would be helpful as a reference.

Any guesses as to what doing this rather than twisting at 1/4 chord
would do?

Cheers,
Adam

Twisting around the LE will add a bit of a pitching moment. Usually.

However, a flying wing USUALLY will have a near-zero pitching moment airfoil
so it's a non-issue.

Besides, if it's a foamie, just twisting it with you hand and applying a
heat gun, will usually twist around approximately the 1/4 chord point. So
it's no problem. Really I've done it dozens of times. Don't sweat it.

Not an EPP foamie (bagged composite), so I have to make the decision
before I cut the cores, but I'm sure it'll work out fine. I'll throw in
an extra 1/4 degree of twist (it requires 4 already).

Thanks again,

Adam, Just curious if anyone knows how washout
should be "properly" added to a wing. I don't mean how much should be
added (that I understand fine), but rather how the wing should be
twisted. Do you rotate the tip section about the 1/4 chord point
(typically how I've done it in the past)? Can you rotate the tip section
about the LE instead without changing the effect very much? Does it
really matter?Just a thought: you should twist it about the hingeline of
the controlsurfaces. The hingeline becomes a straight line, which
simplifies thehinge and the seal of the surfaces. This way, you
maximize the seal(or at least minimize the complexity of the hinges and
seals) for thecontrol surface. Leaking pressure from the bottom of the
wing to thetop of the wing (reducing aero efficiency and control
powerefficiency) is usually a bad idea...Reimar Horten always did it
that way. So it MUST be a good idea...Al Bowers-- Al

I had a GL but never really learned to fly on it. I found out that you
really need more than one or two rubberbands on the wing when you have a
stiff up-start. I built a HOB 2x2 that summer. I still have the 2x2 but
most of the original wood is gone!

Both were flying with a Cox Sanwa 2 channel, 2 stick rig with dry cells.
Sorry, my first tx was fully proportional.

[RCSE] Will build one Genie LT/S for resale.

2004-12-03 Thread Harley Michaelis
Guys I'm about caught up with my projects with nothing much left to do this
winter except build a Genie Pro wing once I see a set of cores. I rarely
build except for myself, but would consider building one Genie LT/S for
resale. The LT/S, as I build them, is not suited to rapid production. I work
liesurely and carefully at my own pace. Figure a couple of months once we
have agreed otherwise. I want no money until it is ready to ship.

I would want the recipient to be someone deeply and seriously involved in
traditional thermal competition, who likes to launch and fly aggressively,
who butts heads with top competitors and who is competent to confidently fly
high perfomance ships.

Tell me about yourself, where you fly and about your equipment, so I can
pick someone I would consider a good partner for this ship, who will
appreciate it and not consider it dispensible like some other ARF.

I'm not interested in selling to anyone who just happens to have the money
to buy it. Price below is fixed and a fair one for time and materials
involved. A larger offer means nothing to me.

I can't guarantee perfection, but would build more carefully than I would
for myself. I would want you to provide six suitable servos for me to
install for you. I would do that and complete the wiring harness as part of
the deal. I would need a switch harness and four servo leads with connector
to use on the receiver side of the harness. I would need two servos for
flaps with full length leads attached. Aileron servos will be soldered to
the harness at the servo end.

Servos would be installed using Mark Drela's cantilever mounting system in
which servos do not touch the skin. I would install my all-internal Rotary
Driver System using the Kimbrough Products couplers with my own custom made
shafts and pockets. I would use tempered aluminum coupler tops on the flap
servos.

I only have JR receivers now and am best set up to deal with JR micro
servos. 341's are fine for all applications except flaps. For those, 351's
are just fine. I have some 368's in a big Genie, but consider them overkill
for the LT/S. Maximum thickness is 1/2, but I do not want those thin wing
servos for which there is no RDS adapter to fit the output gear.

You can see pics of the LT/S in File 10 of the Genie pages at
http://genie.rchomepage.com/. Some are in the Gallery file. I have many
others I can e-mail. File 1,2 and 3 detail construction. Look over these
files to be informed. Once I have decided on a buyer, assuming I get one, we
can talk colors and trim. Glassed over LE's come with a glossy painted
finish. The only tape used is the reflecting type.

Price will be $845, your servos and RDS installed. A comparable moldie
would cost you another $500 or so. Figure about $60-$70 to ship. US only.

[RCSE] SNOW/ planes for sale

2004-12-03 Thread Richard Hallett
Yes that four letter word.
Well most of the parts have arrived for my 4th CNC machine. So it is
time now to think of building at least during the week. Perhaps someone
in a warmer section could benefit
I finished off my fourteenth Bubble Dancer and have been flying it the
longest of any that I have built.I had flutter problems with the
previous two by allowing the stab mount to have a loose hinge. With
this one I got rid of the problem. Phew!!! Unfortunately when I
launched it I knew it was not quite as strong. After some research I
found the green Amoco foam was no longer made by Amoco and the 45 #
compression had now dropped back to 25. It will still take a very
powerful launch from most winches. So now it is time to build another
with Dow hi load 60. The unit is covered with glass only no paint so
the carbon is very visible. It is equipped with 2 metal gear Hitec 85,
no spoilers and an FMA M5 (ch11) receiver and a high capacity battery.
Flying weight is approximately 39 ounces. The foils are the AG24,25,26
that Mark designed specifically for the application and in the write up
has my name on them. Sale price $550 plus shipping. It will be ready to
fly when you receive it.
The other plane that I was trying to wring out the flutter was a Supra
clone. Again the fault proved to be the same. It seems to be standing
up well to my F3B winch. In order to iron out the difficulty though I
switched to a thicker wing the SD7084 that Donovan of Selig Donovan said
could race with the RG 15 at a slightly heavier loading. The
interesting facet I find with this model is similar to my use of it
years ago in the Magic by Weston it can pirouette on flaps in lift
unlike others that I have flown. The planform is similar to the Aegea
with the forward sweep of the Supra. A case of making good use of your
mylar. The unit is equipped with four digital thin wing servos by Hitec
and a Multiplex micro digital for the elevator an d a Futaba 133 for
the rudder. All up weight 75 ounces. The receiver is a Multiplex IPD on
51 driven by a high capacity battery. The top surface of the wing is white
with a pink tip diagonal . Of course this flies more like one of Harley's.
So now having gotten rid of the flutter it is time to build it with
Mark's thin foils again. Sale price complete ready to fly the day it
lands $750 plus shipping
.

Finally I have a 3m Laser with Multiplex digital servos in the wing and
JR 341
for the stab and rudder. A new high capacity battery drives the
Airtronics FM receiver. The Fuselage is natural Kevlar with white
wings on the top and carbon black on the bottom. The fuselage was
crashed once and excellently repaired. Sale price $700 plus shipping.
I received this in exchange for assisting in programming an Evo.

Because of this the servo assignment is the Jr order for all of the above.
So if you are in the same boat I will sell an Evo(Synthesized) to go
with any of the
above. I have one Evo 9 $500 and an Evo 12 $600. You would primarily
buy them at this price because you are interested in the fact they are
preprogrammed. The Evo is one of the easiest radios to program but
almost impossible because of our previous experience. It is that
experience of flying a plane towards you for the first time.

Ask for pictures.
