Re: [RCSE] Using cheap hair spray

2004-12-13 Thread Keith Smith
I've been using cheap hair spray for years. I especially like using it on
all my paper pattern. It's best to do this after your patterns have been
pasted down to your pattern material. The spraying of the patterns should be
done before cutting your patterns. The spray really helps protects your
patterns long after they have been pasted up. One another thing, be sure to
write all your notes on your patterns before spraying them. I suggest using
two to three very light coats of spray making sure each coat has thoroughly
dried before applying the following coat, and then lightly kiss your
patterns with 600 sand paper. This will assure you'll have great patterns
than will last!

Jim -
I haven't used shellac to do this, but I have achieved some pretty light
finishes.

I use hair spray for the initial coats. Get the cheapest large aerosal
cans you can find. Fog a few sparse coats on, sanding very lightly with
400 grit between coats. You only need to knock down the stickups. If you
keep the initial coats light and let them dry well you won't hurt a foam
wing, and the weight buildup will be minimal.

After you get the wood sealed with hairspray go ahead with the waterborn
poly. I like to wipe it on with an old t shirt or a foam brush, keeping
the coats thin and many.

happy trails - Roob Glover

As a woodworker I haven=B9t used but read about shellac as the
sealer/under
coat for wood finishes. Shellac is accepted as a good barrier against
wate=
r
vapor, but not liquid water, and any finish will stick to it well. So I
thought it might be a very good under or only coat for balsa tail parts on
HLG=B9s etc. Don Stackhouse of DJ Aerotech describes the use of water
born
(not a solvent in this case) polyurethane and that care must be taken to
ge=
t
a very thin first later coats. One reason for that would be the fact
tha=
t
wood so readily absorbs water then changing it=B9s dimensions due to
swelling
of the wood fibers. Don's main goal seems to be to limit weight added
though.

Have any of you tried shellac, which uses alcohol as its solvent? I am
wondering if a 3 pound cut, for example, would penetrate less than a 1
poun=
d
cut. [Shellac is mixed as x pounds of flakes to 1 gallon of alcohol.
N.B.
you must use de-waxed shellac if you intend to over coat it with any other
finish.]

Re: [RCSE] Inexpensive Hotliner?

2004-12-13 Thread Jim Prouty
Hi All,
Sorry for the delay in replying. Up to my ()*$# in alligators!
In answer to the following questions:
1. What's your budget?
I'd like to keep the whole thing under $500 but also want a setup that will
last. Prefer all composite over wood since I hope to take the plane on the
road when I travel. I'll have the wife make up a holtiner pack to carry it
in. Would also prefer a 2 piece wing.

2. What type of flying are you going to do, all aerobatics, all
thermalling or a mixture?
I'd like to fly a mixture of aerobatics and some thermalling with a
plane. I have plenty of power planes so I can get my aerobatic fix with
them or on the slope.

3. What type of batteries are you going to be using?
I'll use whatever's best for the plane that I choose. I have all different
kinds of batteries and a Microlader charger that can reliably charge any
kind of battery.

4. What type of area will you be flying in?
Pretty much wide open spaces. The smallest space I would fly in would
probably be the size of a soccer field.

Again, thanks for all of your comments. Much appreciated.
Happy flying,

[RCSE] Fut 14MZ - Same old revolutionary Multiplex ideas

2004-12-13 Thread Joedy Drulia
Bill Malvey wote:
Not to pick on you, Bill, but many of these features on the upcoming Fut
14MZ are just re-inventing the wheel.

It also allows up to 14 servos to be plugged into the RX and then to be
independently adjusted for centering and end points. Plus you can tell the
RX that the servos on channels 1 and 2 are the left aileron, 3 4 are the
right aileron, 5 6 are the spoilers, 6 7 are the flaps (thinking scale
glider here) and so on.
This has been a standard feature of Multiplex for years now.
It also ahs a synthesized frequency module. You select your channel on the
TX and when you power up it tells the RX what channel it is on.
Can you say, EVO? Oops, the EVO also has a Scanner module it tells you
if the selected channel is in use.

As you noted the switches are moveable and anything can be assigned to any
switch, lever, slider, or stick (much like the 9Z can now).
Ah, Multiplex again... another standard feature for years now.
Add to that the fact that the 14MZ is 2048 PCM and you are getting some
incredible resolution as well.
Every MPX channel is full resolution. On the EVO and on the Profi every
channel is full resolution and in PPM mode, nonetheless (unlike some other
brands which required a brand-specific PCM receiver in order to get a binary
ON/OFF 9th channel.)

Frankly for normal TD stuff it is likely super overkill. However, for giant
scale sailplanes and the 35% to 45% aerobatic planes, it is going to be
simply killer.
I think that it is great that Futuba is raising the bar. Perhaps this will
convince other brands to be more innovative in their designs. I think that
the CF module is a good call, but then again... SD format seems to be
getting more popular now. Will the CF module go the way of the dinosaurs
eventually before the life of the 14MZ is up?

I'm not so sure about the music and the big color screen being of value for
RC... who needs a fancy screen while flying? Shouldn't you be watching your
plane instead?

The three hours of battery charge on the 14MZ lithium is a joke. The EVO
gives 8 hours of synth RF using simple 1500 NiMh and 9 hours using the
crystal module

Neat radio, though. Lots of chrome and bling bling, but many of its
improvements have been available through Multiplex for many years now.

[RCSE] 14MZ

2004-12-13 Thread Bill Malvey
OK, made a mistake.

The 10X is $800 TX only.
9Z is $800 TX only.

Make both around $1000 with a good RX.

14MZ around $2200 TX+RX, so about twice the price. People will have to
decide if it is worth it for them or not.

Thanks John D for keeping me honest!!

RE: [RCSE] Inexpensive Hotliner?

I dabbled in the entry-level hotline game for a brief time. I was flying a
Hobby Lobby Jerry for a while. With a Aveox F10LMR, running 7 or 10
cells, it was a blast to fly. Not too hot, but still plenty of climb
performance when propped for about 50 amps. As it turns out, I'm trying to
sell my Jerry...

-

Model: Hobby Lobby Jerry (Electric Glider)
Controls: aileron/elevator
Wingspan: 81.5
Length: 43
Weight: 2 lb 2 oz (w/ 3x Hitec HS-81 servos, no power system)
Photo - http://home.earthlink.net/~sat-chaser/ForSale/Jerry.JPG
Hobby Lobby sells the Jerry for $229. Asking $120

- Model is good entry-level hotliner if flown with a high power brushless
power system
- Model does NOT include motor/ESC/prop/batteries
- Fuselage has been repaired at wing saddle/fin
- Includes carbon fiber wing joiner
- Removable wings/tail for easy transport in original box

-

Please email me if you are interested.
