FYI:

Jared of Austin, TX posted this link in a RCGROUPS thread that I follow. I
found it quite interesting. It is a paper on formation flying and on page 19
talks about elliptical formations reducing drag. It takes about 4 minutes to
load at 28kb because it is a 26 page PDF

[RCSE] Polar Stuff

2005-02-19 Thread RegDave

Oleg,

Thank you for your comments. My apologies for missing the Span Loading
differentiation on the first go around.

That said, I still don't agree with the trends you've noted unless one is
dealing with the induced drag term (and wing) in isolation from everything else.
You can't ignore the weight scaling like that in a realistic scenario. It's
academic but unreasonable.

But this IS getting too detailed for more dialog here (I think).

I would really prefer to see analyses done on the whole planform rather
than relying on trends from individual engineering equations.

To that end, I'll find a web site and post the polar program I've developed
over the past15 years or so. I don't see anything like that available as
freeware on the web anyway. It will have the articles used to derive the
formulation (RCSD series in 2000) as well as the source code, airfoil database
(derived from UIUC and some X-foil runs) and the compiled and installation
files.

It's in VB6 and can be modified by anyone that wants to use it. It has been
run (years ago) against the original Princeton work and other early DOS based
codes (developed by folks with more credibility). It reproduced those results
very well. It's independently derived and written by me but is reasonably
robust. I know the parasitic drag estimates are low and I'm trying to get flight
data to correct that.

It will take about a week to put this together. I'm changing our ISP this
week so hopefully next weekend I can set this up. I'll send a post to RCSE when
it's done.

If anyone tries it and has feedback, that would be appreciated. Hopefully
the Windows GUI will make it easier for folks to do this type of analysis if
their interests require it. And the source code and notes allow for corrections
in areas that are deficient.

In the meantime, thanks for the dialog. I understand your points but think
the view is rather constrained.

I put together a new version a Deluxe kit. It

No excuse not to do it now. Deluxe kit is

2005-02-19 Thread Stuart A. Hall
I have to say the march of technology within our hobby is simply
unbelievable. It has gotten to the point, for me, that purchasing hobby
supplies is a bit like buying a new computer... wait a few months on a
computer and you can get something faster and cheaper. With our hobby
technology (except for planes) you can get something much smaller,
lighter and potentially better for not much more money if you just wait
6 months or so.

I am still kicking myself for buying a fast charger and NiMH batteries
about 6 months before LiPos became well established! :-)

For $89 if you have a Evo or one of the other synthesized TX modules
this can't be beat, IMHO. Very impressive and apparently easy to use as
well. I wonder what is coming out next... I have to spend some more
time browsing different sections of RCGroups besides the Thermal and
Sailplane Talk forums for some more up and coming info.

BTW, if there is any new and better technology coming this is a great
place for some vendors to share! Do tell!

[RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #5178

2005-02-19 Thread Jo Grini
It will be interresting to test the Shadow 3. The last month I have been
trying to get equipment for flying the NATS at 72mhz. So a little Norwegian
story:
First I bought a new EVO radio. But that was offcourse with crystal module.
So I need another crystal. Then I asked Polk for a receiver. Just a week
later a nice small synth receiver dumped in my mailbox (hows that for
service half way around the world). But I wanted 4000ft range in a carbon
fuse and neither my module or rx was up for that. So I talked with a lot of
guys and even Kennedy composites said: We will supply you with all you
need and the Shadow 3 will be available soon. another outstanding service
for a Norwegian that wants to fly with you guys over there as we say it.

I gave up I DO want to test the equipment BEFORE I go to a competition
so I contacted my friend from last WC F3J - John Diniz at Horizon Hobby.
He feels he have the solution with a brand new JR9303 and some receivers AND
correct crystals = a complete system on 72mhz = what I need.
So if everything goes well I will brake the line of Multiplex transmitters
from -86 and stepping up with JR and Horizon Hobby for the Nats.

So again a big thanks to all the guys that help out. It is not easy just to
pack you bag and walk across the pond! But all is going the right way and I
am now AMA member, registered at the NATS, picked up by Gordy, share hotel
room with Robert Burson, flying F3J with Don Richmond, Rob Glover and Larry
Rubble, received my LSF II voucher after 19 years, getting equipment from
JR/Horizon, getting an AVA by Kenndy Composites for use at the Nats AND
Gordy is handling the fund so I dont get hungry. I even got funds from a
Swede! Only one thing left I think: order the ticket! So a new credit card
is on the way from the bank :-)

[RCSE] Shadow 1 RX Reviewed in RCSD...of course :-)

2005-02-19 Thread GordySoar

Hi Guys,

The Shadow 1 will be reviewed in RCSD in the next issue. Tech tested
by George Steiner and field tested by me (of course :)

The results? Better than anyone of us hoped and not close to what is
coming from Sombra shortly, in fact more of the Shadow series will be introduced
by Barry (Kennedy Composites) at Toledo.
Both Barry and I have been in close contact with Sombra, offering up
very sailplane-ish suggestions for added features.

If the all work out, most of us will have lots of the 4 channel version in
our planes and shop drawers. You won't need anything more for slow flyers
or giant scale aero tow ships.

My Blaster has been hiding a Shadow1 since day 1 :-)

TheSky and Technology SRX is another promising RX.
The first release was recalled due to some bad components that
were supplied by a vendor, but most of the units performed extremely
well even with someone else ON YOUR FREQUENCY!!!
I had a few of them, you program them by putting them close to your TX
antenna and then powering up. They filter by locking on the unique
characteristics
of your TX signal.
They are supposed to be coming out with an updated version soon..
