[RCSE] Airfoil question

2005-03-08 Thread Don Lisa Copley
Over the past week we have gone from Artemis to Zenith's in what to fly
discussion category.

It's boiled down to two things:

What is the difference between (Zenith etc.) MH-32 and (Sharon Pro) SD 7037
which turn into a RG15. This is Greek to me. I don't have aerodynamics

Re: [RCSE] Airfoil question

2005-03-08 Thread John Erickson
Don,

A lot of the airfoils will reference numbers that have to do with 2 things:
Camber and Thickness. The Zenith has a HQW 3.5/8. The HQW part is the
author, in this case Helmut Quabeck. The 3.5 is the percent camber, and the
8 is the percent thickness.

In general, the greater the camber, the more lift but at a price of more
drag. Where you really see it is in windy conditions or when you are trying
to go fast. Trying to make the best of both worlds, the designers have set
up the airfoils so you can change the trailing edge of the wing (reflex or
camber) hence changing the airfoil. A reflexed airfoil is going to scoot
across the sky better, but not have as much lift.

Some of the differences between airfoils are so small that only as a more
experienced pilot will you notice a difference. There are other factors
like the wing planform (shape) that also come into play. So...the MH32 has
less camber than the HQW 3.5/8 which in turn has less than the 7037. That's
probably the order you would put them in general terms if you are talking
about drag and lift.

Your final sentence sums it all up. If you practice 3 times a week (lucky
man) it won't really matter what foil your plane has. A good pilot can make
a number of foils work, it just comes down to preference and flying style.

John;
Great that Horizon offers these as a full service supplier, but are any
sailplane guys still using them? Maybe Jet guys? I can understand that
for tight fitting installations with lots of potential RF noise sources
they might be useful.

Al:
For what it is worth, with today's heavy duty wire, and quality servos,
I have never used these or any filtering on the largest of my scale
sailplanes up to 42% scale, my old Bruckmann Swift for example with 4
foot servo leads, or my Hangar 9 46% Ultimate with 13 servos, yards of
wire etc. and a 150cc ignition motor bolted up front.

For sailplanes:
2500 mah batteries minimum, quality 22 gauge wire, hardwired or branded
(JR of course :-)) connectors and heavy duty redundant switches, careful
routing of the antenna, no problems. I often twist my wires for long
leads, but have found even this unnecessary on my Ultimate Bipe.

Magic, er... Ferrite beads won't solve your problem, maybe mask it.

i.e. fly backwards thanks to a variable pitch prop.

There was an article in the `Fly RC' magazine that I got yesterday
about variable pitch props. Pretty impressive that they've gotten it
working. Did the article mention this site and/or movie, or is it
just a coincidence that you happened to post this today?

I always figured that a variable pitch prop would be too much hardware
for a small R/C plane (increasing weight and reducing reliablity), but
obviously these people have made it work. And it looks good -- going
straight through the middle of an outrigger motor is very clever.

What I've wanted to do instead was put a reversable ESC (from a car,
most likely) into a plane with a direct drive, non-folding prop.
Something like my XE2 (basically a Zagi clone) which doesn't have
spoilers or any other way to bleed off airspeed. With the prop shape
as it is, I doubt it would provide much thrust when run in reverse,
but it would certainly provide enough thrust/drag to slow the plane
down in a hurry. And it would probably sound really wierd. Never got
around to doing this, however.

(With a folding prop, putting it into reverse would run the risk of it
trying to fold back into the fuselage while it's under power -- the
thrust produced by the prop would be trying to close it, with the
centrifigal force trying to open it -- I'm not sure who would win.
And with a gear box, bad things could happen if you suddenly went back
from forward to backward thrust.)

The variable pitch prop would remove the issue regarding the sudden
direction change -- as the direction never changes. The folding prop
issue would remain, however -- unless some sort of lock were
incorporated. Not much need for a folding prop on a 3D plane,
however.

To make this soaring related, well, I soar the XE2 quite a lot --
especially when the slope lift is weak, or if I'm trying to do
thermalling. It's nice not needing a hi-start or winch. But there's
really no way to slow it down for landing, since I can't even do a
slip like I could in a 4 channel airplane. Fortunately, when a bad
landing turns into a crash or a cartwheel, it doesn't really mind :)

There was a fellow doing this stuff at the indoor flys here in Columbus this
winter. He had modified a chopper tail prop to work on the front of his

It was neat to watch. He could back into parking spaces, too.

But it was one of the reasons I quit flying indoor this winter. It
is hard enough for me, as a slow-flying floater with a GWS A-drive on a 60
Chrysalis, to avoid mid airs with the hot dogs when they were just flying
3-D aerobatics. When they can back up and hit you, it is time to give up
and get into model railroading or something.

So it turns into a Chevy Ford fiasco again? I have some top fliers
commenting on the Sharon. They must feel it when they fly to different
airfoils like you said. So the foil with less camber is easier to change the
TE flight characteristics and the plane with more camber is harder?

[RCSE] FW: MidSouth Soaring Championship 2005 Invitation

Championship 2005 Invitation

The North Atlanta Soaring Association (NASA) invites
you to the 14th Annual Mid-South Soaring Championship
(MSSC), June 24-26. This year it will be held Duluth,
GA at the Scott Hudgens Park NASA field in the River
Green Industrial Park. Duluth is located 10 miles
north of downtown Atlanta. The site consists of
approximately 20 acres of cleared, flat fields.

This is the second time NASA has hosted the MSSC. We
plan to continue and expand the fellowship of fliers
attending this annual event. In the past there have
been as many as 125 entrants from as many as 25 states.
We encourage contestants to bring their families and
extend their visit take in some of the many nearby
Atlanta metropolitan attractions, shopping centers and
events. Maps and Links to the Atlanta Chamber of
Commerce sites are included in this MSSC web site
located at www.midsouth.atlantasoaring.com The site
will be open for registration by March 14th.

This year's contest will consist of hand launch and RES
(Friday) and two separate thermal duration events
(Saturday Sunday). The thermal duration events will
flown man-on-man using five winches with a sixth
back-up. Golf carts will retrieve lines. We plan on
going five deep for most awards. The best overall
score will be awarded counting all four events.

While competitive spirit draws many of the contestants,
we cannot forget that the MSSC offers a chance to meet
and renew friendships within the close knit soaring
community. To help foster the exchange of soaring
folklore during the event, we again plan to keep the
field open Saturday for sport flying while serving a
low country boil dinner at the field.

The all you can eat feast includes shrimp, sausage,
corn on the cob, potatoes and other fresh seafood and
meats and seasonal vegetables prepared at the field by
the same chef who met with such acclaim at our last
contest. Soft drinks will be available from the same
group catering breakfasts and lunches during the
contest.

For those in town Friday, plan on stopping by Mi
Mexico, the official NASA watering hole and t-shirt
sponsor. Both Mi Mexico and the Days Inn (MSSC 2005's
official hotel) are within a couple of miles of the
flying site and each other.

We have reserved 30 rooms at the Days Inn at Technology
Park (6385 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, 1-800-329-7466)
at a very special rate of $50.00 plus tax for Thursday
night, June 23 through Saturday night, June 25. You
will need to mention the fact that you are attending
the Mid South in order to obtain this special rate or
even to obtain a room at all. The $50 rate applies to
a room with two double beds. A suite with a King Size
bed and room for 4 occupants is also available at the
special rate of $60 plus tax per night. These special
rates are only available for reservations made before
Thursday, June 9. After that date, the rate will go up
and rooms will no longer be available. Days Inn
features high speed internet connections, a swimming
pool, and a complementary Continental Breakfast. It is
approximately 3 miles south of the River Green on
Peachtree Industrial Blvd. See the web site for
additional hotel information.

[RCSE] Come see Me at Toledo LSF Booth!

2005-03-08 Thread GordySoar

Seems they want me to be the poster boy for LSF at Toledo...really as in
they plan on stapling me to a poster! :-)

However I will be in Kennedy Composites booth showing off the new Volz
Digitals, including the Speed Maxx version that is becoming all the rage for
elevator on the world scene. Its is so fast the AMA is thinking of fitting its
carb with a restrictor plate!

Also I will be helping Barry talk about the amazing Shadow Series Xtal Less
RX's and likely you'll get a chance to see some things there about the Picolario
too. I am officially being paid...well not exactly paidBarry has
offered me one free Atkins Bar each day to offset expenses!

Hope to see you all there!

Gordy

That freekin' rocks!
Thanks for sharing the video, it didn't take me a second to understand what
I was about to see after he taxi'ed backwards. Those indoor profile models
don't even look like they fly, they just sort of flop around in the air
with an abundance of power. Probably is fun to do though.

10 bonus points if anyone can name the band that played the music over the
video... 8-)

White Stripes. (Song, Seven Nation Army)

I never heard of them. I just listed to the beginning lyrics, I'm gonna
fight 'em off, enetered that into Google, and got the answer.

2005-03-08 Thread James C Deck

Gordy,
Just a reminder to you and all LSF members
sending in vouchers this month - between the AMA "batching" of vouchers and the
USPS playing catch-up with my mail as I vacation in Arizona, there probably will
be additional delays in voucher processing this month. Add to that an
immediate trip to Toledo upon my return. I probably can do "almost
instant" voucher turnarounds at the Toledo booth if one doesn't mind being
jostled by the happy throngs. Hmm... maybe the LSF booth should have a
Gordy dunk tank ...

I was told I completed the first four levels faster than anyone they
knew of. I went thru everything except the 8 hr slope in a little more
than a year. As a 25 year veteran of the slope with 1000's of hrs, I
just can't muster the enthusiasm to sit up there for 8 hrs straight.

[RCSE] Genie LT/S

2005-03-08 Thread Jim Carlton
Just looking over my new Genie and trying to decide what type of battery pack
to use in this fuse, along with a couple of other items to get her airworthy
for the spring. I wanted to mention to the list how incredible it is to have
a custom built sailplane like the Genie built to exacting standards by the
creator of the design. I am truly impressed with the Genie design and Harley
has done a great job assembling what appears to be a great TD contesting
ship. I can't wait to set up the winch and wring it out to see what I've got!
By following Harley's step by step processes, you, too, can have one of these
great looking ships for a lot less than the cost of the typical moldy.
(Except for the investment of time required!) I have been working on the Big
Genie version and in the time it has taken me to build up the fuse, fin and
stabs, Harley completely built, bagged, painted and installed gear in a Genie
LT/S. Thanks for the efforts, Harley. I hope I can do this ship proud!

Jim Carlton

P.S. Nope, I'm not being paid for this endorsement but rather I compensated
Harley for his efforts. Although he has stated he is not in the production
business, I feel honored to have one of his creations. I highly recommend his
documentation and plans published for the Genie series.

Re: [RCSE] Who's mailing in LSF Forms for level completion before the end of March?

2005-03-08 Thread Mark Williams

I'm still on the Level IV. My form is crispy from
sitting in the flight box for over 20 years. Need to get the "medium" goal and
return. Started back filling the contest requirements at our first unlimited
contest of the year in February, since I never finished that
portion.

Can't even think of 8 hours on a slope. I get
images of Alan Shepard on the Redstone. What happens to your plane at that time?
It could get even worse, with the TexMex food we have down here!

Now how to make the G R?

Well, I finally got enough landings witnessed to send in my Level I voucher.
Man it is tough in Marion, MS to find a legal LSF witness. And I'm only on
level I. But, I'll be starting on Level II as soon as I can get this form
postmarked.

Man it is tough in Marion, MS to find a legal LSF
witness

Just have to be over 21 not a relative, doesn't have to be LSF
member.
Or one witness of any LSF number, who is not a
relative.
