Re: [RCSE] Ballast suggestions
Take 1/2 or 3/4 copper or brass pipe cut into various sizes, whatever fits over CG in fuse. Drill hole in about 1/2 away from middle and insert bolt. (This is important as lead is hard to drill.) Now melt lead and pour into tube. I made a funnel out of sheet aluminum. Drill a hole in bottom of fuse 1/2 in front of CG. Now slide into fuse drop bolt through hole install nut or wing nut. I did this for the Emerald. It was tricky getting the ballast in and out. Long tools were required. But it worked. [RCSE] Vincent F3F results - Lots of new PB's!
Vincent, feast or famine; Vincent, home to the dustiest, hottest and sometimes fastest F3F venue in Southern California didn't disappoint this Saturday. 20 pilots, 10 rounds plus a zero round, 183 rounds flown, fastest time of 34.49 by Dave Reese, 8 personal bests (nearly half the field!), great hustle by the troops, fantastic vibe in the pits, a relatively quiet peanut gallery (for the CD), everyone made it back up the hill, two complete wrecks (sorry Rey and Warren), and scattered minor landing induced breakages (but mild for vincent's of the past). I think it was GREAT! The scoreboard changed after every round. When you go to vegas, this is what you get. A smoking 30 something round, then a 60 something to follow. You never know, but it keeps you coming back for more. Memorable moments for me, Alex's first sub 40 round, and doing it with style with a 36.78, 19 rounds in the 30's, and seeing so many people after I worried about so many people. We still cranked out 10 rounds AND landed after every flight! Thank you to everyone for making that happen. By round two, everyone was ready to go with tranny's on, planes ballasted and ready to launch. By round six, people figured out they can use that 60 second launch window to their advantage. Today we had special prizes for the three fastest times: Dave Reese 34.49, Dan Field 35.45, and Alex Neigher 36.78. Congrats! Congratulations go to Joe Wurts for fending off, just barely, Dave Reese and myself to take the win. It was very close racing, and no one could look at the scoresheet and know who won. It was all over the board. Joe was feast or famine but had three 30sec rounds, Dave had two 1000 point rounds, but also had some 50+ sec rounds to contend with. I never felt like it was working all day, but had most of my rounds in the 40's, and that kept me just barely in front of Bob Breux who had the same strategy. (actually, I think the strategy finds you at Vincent). Gary Legerton spent more time in the pit area fixing landing damage than flying, but managed a top 5, just barely in front of Tom Copp by 10pts! Then Tom nudged Dan Field by 1 hundredth of a second! Wow! 1 7294.39 Joe Wurts 2 7199.87 Dave Reese 3 6933.30 Bob Bingham 4 6888.77 Bob Breux 5 6780.80 Gary Legerton 6 6770.27 Tom Copp 7 6770.26 Dan Field 8 6718.87 Kyle Paulson 9 6654.50 Dave Bates 10 6647.66 Bill Delhagen 11 6617.67 Tim Neja 12 6540.42 Alex Neigher 13 6517.79 Alexei Kisselev 14 6503.32 Jay Waitley 15 6470.50 Phat Vu 16 6428.40 Warren Day 17 5487.86 Joe Zepeda 18 5471.45 Mike Sheridan 19 3879.11 John Erickson 20 739.24 Rey Harju. [RCSE] F3J Team Selection Registration
There is just over 1 month left to the cut-off for registration for the 2005 Team Selections. Be sure to get your registration in to the AMA and RMSA. If you have not received a registration form from the AMA, email me and I will send you an electronic copy you can print and send in to the AMA with your $75 registration fee. You also need to register with RMSA and can do that online at http://www.rmsadenver.com/f3j-ts.htm. Registered participants need to be associated with a team. Please use the Create or Join Teams link to manage your teams. Those that do not have an established team can create a public team and allow others to join them. Private teams are managed by the team creator. If you wish to join a private team, contact the team creator and ask to join and have the team creator add you to the team. There are currently a number of registrants that are not currently associated with any team. Note that you MUST be a member of a team prior to the registration cutoff which is when we manage the frequencies and prepare the flight matrix. It is NOT the responsibility of the organizer to assemble or assign teams - YOU must coordinate team participation. I have provided this tool to help participants find others and join in teams. The sooner you register and advertise for teammates, the likelier you will be successfull. See you in August... Jim RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Ballast suggestions, Long!
Dan, What I have done in my Shappire is this. Make up some 1/2 K S brass slugs at the increments you want to be able to add weight. Fill with your weight of choice, lead shot/epoxy, tungsten powder, or melted tire weights. Obtain some Estes Rocket tubes, # BT-5. These have a nominal ID of .518, perfect for a slip fit on the K S tubing. Just do a search on the Net, found multiple suppliers or look in a good hobby shop if you can find one these days. Make a plug to close the aft end of the tube, so the slugs don't fly all the way to the tail feathers when inserted. I like lite-ply, light weight and bonds to the tubes with thin CA like crazy. If you want to really strengthen the tube wrap it with 1.5 oz. fiberglass cloth using CA. Or, you can just soak the inside with CA. If you CA the inside, you might need to ream the tube after the CA sets with a piece of 1/2 brass tube. I have done either and both, with both the cloth and CA the tubes are really STIFF and LIGHT. That is what I just recently installed in my Eraser. I recommend a brass tube collar CA'd to the paper tube where you plan to have a piano wire retainer to carry landing shock loads. The Eraser tube weighed less than 3/8 oz. with the collar. If you are installing this in the Sapphire I sold you and still have the pin type landing skeg, I would recommend two tubes. These go either side of the landing skeg. Make a bulkhead for the aft portion of the tubes and the forward portion of the tubes. Install all of this in your fuselage so the full ballast load rests at the CG. Don't you just love building a ship in a bottle? Now make up some 3/8 hard balsa spacers to your liking so you can use less than the full load. 3/8 balsa will fit perfectly if you just break the corners. Just make sure the spacers keep the ballast at the CG. I will also recommend that if you require a balsa spacer at the retainer pin like I do, CA a piece of brass shim stock on the end that contacts the piano wire retainer pin to prevent crushing when dorking. This is all easier to see than to write. The next time we meet up let me know so I can bring my Sapphire and show how it looks. This set-up allows me to carry 15.5 oz. of ballast in my Sapphire if desired. It's not an even pound because I am using the slugs I made 20+ years ago. The Eraser set-up carries the same load in one tube, all centered on my favorite CG. It's nice having only one ballast system in the flight box for all of your arrows! [RCSE] Watch out world
Warning to other F3J W.C teams (tongue firmly planted in cheek) The Australian LSF Jerilderie competition was held over last weekend in some very challenging conditions. 8 of the 20 F3J team aspirants from the field of 70 fliers beat the reigning World champion David Hobby (automatic world championship qualified) home for team selection. Looks like we should have a very good team again for next years world championships. The names of the team members are subject to confirmation but Carl Strautins Mike O'Rielly look like 2 of the starters the third I have forgotten due to little sleep over the last 5 days. Our gorilla launch team are already in training on a diet of raw balsa, carbon and monofilament for those 2 second launches this time around. Regards Tim Mellor Australia.
