Thanks guys, It might be helpful to describe what I had intended to do to
make the spars for the model.

The wing is foam cored that has been routed out to insert the spar. The
spar is going to be pre-made and

then inserted into the slot in the core.
The spar is tapered from 17mm wide at the root to 8mm at the tip. I am
going to make spar caps in a jig
that I've constructed and then assemble them with the joiner box and shear
webbing in another jig.
This will ensure that the depth of the spar is correct to fit the wing. I
was intending to make the spar caps
with various lengths of tow so that the cap thickness also tapers to the
tip. To try to get the tows as straight
as possible in the spar cap I intend to use a steel roller to roll the tows
into the jig all in one direction after

they are laid into the jig.

I was intending to wet out the carbon tows with a roller system that will
hopefully wet the carbon and leave
the carbon both straight and with the correct amount of resin in
it. When the cap is all laid up I was going
to use peel ply and vacuum bag it in the jig to get any excess resin out of
it. It is this roller system that I

was trying to find on the net.

This is for the Majali model that the Club group is constructing and
because we have to make a total of
22 spars we need to have a system of building the spars that will ensure
some consistency in size and

strength.

I would appreciate any comments on both the construction method proposed
and any ideas of how to
make a carbon tow wetting system. I still can't find the photo that I
saw on the net.

There may be a better way. I use precured carbon strips. Available from
Avia Sport Composites. Their material is FAR superior to anything that you
can make with tow, they are significantly stronger/stiffer/lighter for their
relative size.

Re: [RCSE] Model finish

2005-09-07 Thread mpodder

Hi Dan

The gel coat on the Ava fuse will stand up to Acetone with no problem. So
that's the first thing to try. Second is some 2000 wet and dry paper. Be
careful the gel coat isn't that thick. Then finish polish it with Wrights
Silver Cream. This also works very well on scratches and other mistakes on
Moldies.

You know it is funny, but the Airtronics guy's say that they wished I

Your numbers do not match up with what I was told...
But the 368 has been a great servo for me and I have 368's with over 500
hours of flight time on them with in my Icon armada. I have had only had
five failures sense the 368 hit the shelf's. Which is pretty darn good
one broken gear and the others just quit moving from old age and abuse so
I could not complain at all...not that you would listen to me anyway.
Also some of these were the first 368's to hit the general market so
there are always fuzzy stuff in the first fewlol
The only servo that has done me as good are those darned blue thang's and
the 141's...

I did a weight lift test and the Airtronics could lift more than the 368
could so I just assumed that the Airtronics was stronger...MY BAD...

 You know that I'll even support other branded flyers that use JR

 including you. I'm also glad that Airtronics has stepped up in the

 Not sure which Brand X servo DP's post was refering to, but here
 are
 the facts regarding the new Airtronics servo vs the JR DS368,
 comparing new servo to new servo.
 Torque: with 4-cell pack
 Air=3D37.1 oz/in, JR=3D53 oz/in
 Speed: with 4-cell pack
 Air=3D.18sec/60 degrees, JR=3D.21sec/60 degrees
 Size:
 Air=3D.48 x 1.07 x 1.11, JR=3D.50 x 1.12 x 1.17
 Weight:
 Air=3D.78oz, JR=3D.75oz
 Warranty:
 Air=3D?, JR 3 years
 It is slightly faster and slightly smaller.

RE: [RCSE] Thermal duration V or + tail

2005-09-07 Thread Ian Roach
Hello,

In my experience both types work equally well.

Theoretically a V-tail is more efficient than a cross tail, but less
efficient than a T-tail. In practice I can't pick the difference.

A V-tail can be lighter than a cross tail, and much lighter than a T-tail.
Even this does not matter much.

The best handling model I have ever had has a V-tail, but I doubt if it
would be better or worse with a well designed cross tail.

The only handling problem I have ever had with a V-tail model was caused
because I did not set it up correctly. I set this model up with insufficient
rudder deflection, and did not have enough rudder authority to recover from
a dangerous situation. After some repairs, and with the set up done
properly, it performed beautifully, and still does some years later.

When acting as elevators the ruddervators need very little movement but,
when acting as rudders they need as much as you can get. My problem could
just as easily have happened with a cross tail model.

I am quite happy with either tail type, though I rather like the look of a
V-tail. Many European moulded models are available with either style of
tail. When next I buy one my choice of tail type will most likely depend on
what the importer has in stock.
