2005-10-06 Thread Nathan Woods
Bill, there is a great little Flash movie made by the artist Bill
Patterson. Here is the link to his website dedicated to DS'ing. It
hasn't been updated in a while, but the videos and swf movie are still
great examples.

The swf movie is the first plane on the left :-)

Am not sure about your experience, but I would trust JR's shop and if they

have been impressed with Hitec's services aswell. I doubt I would ever put in

We've almost all had to send electronics gear in for testing/repair but I'm
wondering something:

Bench time is very expensive. Do the common repair shops actually make that
big an effort to check over a component?

How trust worthy is the result when a shop says something is fine?

[RCSE] Forelorn Fazer Found

2005-10-06 Thread Marc Gellart
For those that watched as Josh Glaab and I midaired and then contiued to fly on
only to watch my Fazer go into a death throws in less than a minute and go
straight in, the Fazer has been finally located.

I had been by AMA a number of times since the Nats and had Jim Carlton upon
leaving AMA Sunday evening give an ariel view to see if he saw, no luck. I
thought I had a good line on the ship and thought it had gotten across the road
into the beans, well both the line and distance were wrong. Every person who
saw it go in was off in one way or another, I was nearly 250 yards off to the
west and as stated about 100 yards too far north. I got done from a small
trade show Wednesday and went back by again. Muncie has had a bunch of rain
and the fields have been really soft, but things were better and i started into
the corn. The beans had been partially taken off with no ship there. So off
into the corn onmy line and a long way out, nothing. The corn and weeds were
getting really thick, so I backed out and started another search closer to the
road and moving east, you could see on either side of you and for a bit. Well,
in a bout ten minutes there she was, stuffed in the ground about four inches
and the tailboom totally sheared off. First lessen, no matter how sealed up
the ship, in two months she is full of water, second, she is full of water.

I took it to the museuum and friend Rich Lagrange helped me take it apart which
was very ugly, screwdrivers and blocks to get the tips off. RX may be good,
dried out and sent to JR for a check, not sure about any servos, I do not have
much hope. All the wood I could see was mush and even the skin looked swelled.

Very good ship and sad loss, but mine had more flights than Daryl's Sharon.

[RCSE] What do thermals look like?

2005-10-06 Thread Wayne Angevine
Those who have been around a while will recall that I've written several
articles about thermals, some of which have been floating around on the
Internet since before anybody had heard of the Web. The latest version,
with some new graphics, is now up on my very crude website:

Hopefully some folks will find it helpful and interesting. Those who
maintain web sites with links to or copies of older versions should
consider linking to the new version (John Derstine, maybe others?).
Feedback is always welcome.

He was just letting me know how my flying was going to be..

Saturday morning the pilots are all hooked up on the winches and ready for
the first Man on Man launch of the day, the launch master is asking each
pilot if they are ready, just about to fire them off... and Butch trots
out between the winch lines. Butch is no stranger to a contest field, and
its not like him to do this. Johnny is calling him back, but Butch put
his nose up to that, also not like him to do that. He trots out about 20
feet, enough so the entire flight line can see him, curls and hunches that
back up and drops a major league log for everyone to see.

The entire field broke into laughter!

That was the way FRU started this year! 8-)

[RCSE] New DS world records: 301 mph (Unlimited) and 211 mph (60")

2005-10-06 Thread Nathan Woods
I thought I would update all you thermal guys with some interesting news
from the sloping world. What follows is direct from Joe Zepeda, a Parker
Mtn local and serious DS'er:
-
Dateline 10/05/05:
What an amazing day... showed up at about 9-9:30am thinking i would
be the first up there and Kyle was there already with a radio in one
hand and a silly grin asking me to Radar for him so i grabbed my
camera/tripod and the radar gun...

INSANE passes chillin' in the 260's with a high of 295mph... he
then lands and i throw out my carbon Mini blade... tons of 170-180's
and a high of 192mph... i land and then the SD crew shows up, all
giddy and assembling their planes like its the end of the world...

Gary Legerton sets a new 60" Record of 211mph with the Carbon Bird
(www.soaringusa.com), jason lilly is relaxing in the 170's with a 2m
blade just warming up, and Bill Lamping with a mini blade problem
(servo) so no warmup plane leaves him with ONLY his 2m Extreme that
he purchased from Kyle paulson

Joe Manor shows up with his Scratchbuilt 80" Dynamic and pulls off a
blistering 217 or 218mph (i think its 218 he remembers 217) its
clearly on film and i will be reviewing it soon to post online...
WAY TO GO JOE!!

Pat Bowman and Ryan Hevner were the only ones with Foam... and they
werent afraid to PUSH them to the max... Bowman with tired servo's
pulls off a 182mph and several 170's... but here comes big bad
RYAN... all up to you man INSANELY pulls off TONS of 180-190
passes with a High of 201mph!!! your freakin
amazing bro!

Killed planes from today include-
My 60" Carbon Mini Blade (let off the stick and it tucked and met
the earth at a high rate of speed)
Gary Legerton's 2m extreme (too low, caught a tip and sent 1 wing
and fuse to palmdale)
Gary Legerton's 8 FOOT Carbon Bluto... tail went at 160 somthing,
whole plane then fluttered and SNAPPED (killer vid for that one)
Jason Lilly- FAST figure 8 in the 170 range too low and caught a tip
and killed the plane...

no other records were taken... just plane records... from today

World Record- Kyle Paulson at 301mph
60" World Record- Gary Legerton at 211mph
Not foam record but JW record- Ryan Haevner at 201mph

[RCSE] Johnny Berlin?

2005-10-06 Thread Bill Swingle

You know I've heard of this Johnny Berlin guy a whole lot on this list.

In fact I've seen only positive stuff ; frankly sounds like a great guy
so... What is his web site? And what is his business called? Let's send
enough business his way that he can stay in the business.

Sounds like your friend is looking for EPP foam.
I too would like to know of a good source for this foam.

Perhaps you can help again.A friend (not on this
exchange)  asked where he could get a certain kind of foam. He didn't know
the name of it  and could only describe it to me.

It has a rubbery course texture to it and when
compressed and released it returns to its original shape. Sometimes
it's in boxes supporting computers, or other electronic items. He has seen it
and says its blue in color.

What he wants to know is where he can get a chunk of
it approx. 10"  thick.

He would also like to know how to cut it to shape.

I read the part about friction sparks, assumed that was for dramatic
effect - tell me that was the old Letterman "writer embellishments".

RE: [RCSE] Batteries??

2005-10-06 Thread Rob Davis

A guy broke off from SR Batteries and is
doing the same quality work at a little lower price.  The place is
nobsbatteries at http://www.hangtimes.com/nobsbatteries.html
.  I’ve had good experiences with him.  Radical RC is also very
good.

Glenn,

Have you really had good experiences with
them?  I’ve placed two orders.  The first order, for some
Lipoly packs that puffed for no apparent reason.  Actually, one puffed
before I ever even hooked up a connector, just sitting in a box!

The second order was for some custom
shaped NiMh RX packs.  I drew up a Visio diagram showing the
configuration, where I wanted the wire to exit, how I wanted the strain relief
done.  I got packs with no strain relief, the wire coming out of the wrong
end of the pack, and a really sloppy shrinkwrap job.  When I called them
about it, they said to send them back and this time to please provide a
diagram.  Go figure.

Never ordered from them again…
