[RCSE] "Soaring Masters, the Spectacle on the Field, from the Field!'

2006-09-22 Thread GordySoar

I got to the field at about 6:30 and there are those huge Hollywood type
spot lights criss crossing the sky, there must be a dozen of them.

The temp is already warm and friendly, they have the entire field groomed
really low, it looks a lot like a golf green, with diagonal cut lines in the
grass.

The tent is glowing in the morning dark like a huge flying saucer from
outer space and I can hear thermal duration music coming from the tentbut
its the smell that is most amazing!

They have flown in chef's from as far away as Tullahoma who have sort of an
Iron Chef set up going making all sorts of omlets,  the waffles look so
crispy that you can hear them crunch just looking at them.  One table has a
multiple selection of just syrups, warming above Sterno cans.

JoJo sent some maple syrup that he personal drained from a rare maple
specie only found near his home in Norway, and the line is forming in front of
it.  Kind of hard to describe the flavor but I heard one of the Chicago
guys say it reminded him of gorgeous Egyptian belly dancers.

The vendors have all the latest new contest ships on display, I am not
talking old crap like Supras, Perfects and Espada's, I mean new designs not yet
named, and I have to tell you, soaring is gonna get knocked on its butt, when
this new turn in designs is released!
JW doesn't have shoes on.
More later

Re: [RCSE] World Soaring Masters: Setup Day

2006-09-22 Thread Jeff Steifel

It will be both. Soaring and definetly landing.
Tom Kiesling doesn't fly with a skeg anymore at any contests to use it
as prep for FAI events. It will be a landing contest as well, balanced
by 12 minute (not an absolute) flights. But it's man on man... you don't
have to get 12, just beat everyone else.

Good to see you back John...

Stan,

This topic came up recently on one of the car forums I frequent. One guy
had success using very fine wet/dry sandpaper (used wet), the same stuff they
use in auto body painting, progressively finer, and finally polishing compound.
The sandpaper is available in Pep Boys and the like, and grit rating is in the
thousands (don't remember the exact values). Mine are etched from
our desert sun so I was going to try this soon, and I figure the worst that will
happen is I screw them up and have to replace with new ones anyway! There are
products available at the auto stores for polishing plastic headlight lenses,
but they are not aggressive enough to get rid of the etching.

Just so Gordy doesn't blast me for a non-soaring post, I suppose you can
use this technique for getting rid of frosted canopies on your scale sailplanes
;-)

Gentleman:

The simplest thing to try with in house stuff is a soft fine weave
cotton cloth and toothpaste.  Use the paste to wet out the cloth,
don't add much water, if any, unless the paste dries as it does.

Many toothpastes have a very fine grit, whether is be silica base or
titanium dioxide pigment, and I use it all the time for polishing
crystals on watches (when plastic), and canopies.  I also use
toothpast to remove the tarnish on silver necklaces.  Just put the
closed necklace in the palm of your hand, add paste and rub.

All simple stuff learned from and old jewelr boss.

2006-09-22 Thread CapnCrunchie
When I was in college I used a combination of toothpaste/WD-40 to do a knock 'em dead polishing job on my motorcycle rims. The rust dissolved rather easy and polished out great. Amazing what one comes up with practically no budget.     Too bad to hear that polishing compound doesn't work on headlight covers. How am I going to break the news to my Mazda that the clear headlights it received when I polished them just last weekend with Johnson's rubbing compound - is nothing but an illusion.      Blue skies, Capn Crunchie

I'm sure Johnson's rubbing compound, toothpaste and WD40, and other
combinations works fine for mild scratches, discoloration, etc., but the
etching I'm talking about is a white glaze over the surface of the cover that is
dense enough you can't see through, like an acid etch. I know from others who
have tried that the sandpaper/polish worked while the rubbing compound
didn't.

Hi Stan,

I have sanded/polished my headlight lenses before. The Dodge/Chrysler Caravans are notorious for fogging up over time. Got to be so bad that I had to drive with my brights on just so I could see at night.

Because it was too hard to sand the lenses on the van without scratching the paint, I removed the headlight assembly from the body of the van. I sat in the driveway, on a lawn chair in my shorts, with a towel on my lap and wet sanded the the lenses with progressively finer sandpaper. Have the hose there also and use plenty of water. I started with 320 and and worked my way through the progressively finer grits to 1200. I finished off with polishing compound. Total time start to finish about
2.5 hours and I saved about $500 for new lenses.

My lenses ended up crystal clear with no scratches.

You can get the finer grades of sandpaper at your local auto parts store by the paint section.

Regards,
Tom

[RCSE] "Day one is Done!"

2006-09-22 Thread GordySoar

I am just heading off the field, and I have to tell you this was nothing
less than expected!
Tough pilots all!
The Queen of the day isSharons!

Supras as usual, and Espadas both sharing with the Sharons.
Perfects have been perfect, so in the end its all good.

Standings?  Well I would have to hand out a lot of buttons today, but
a lot of the talents took big hits.  There were some planes blown up,
(including one of JW's Icons, he's flying Supra now). All the blow ups were
justified and no fault goes to airframes.

About three hit the wires but none smoked, at least one plane is lost
downwind past the museum (Icon).

Arendt is flying Supra and super.  Tom Kiesling took an off field
zero, Josh and Mike Lacowski are also up there.  Its great to get a chance
to see Ben Clerx put the whooping on, and of course DP, Mike Smith, are both
Sharon guys, and doing well too.

Who's really hot?  Do you need to guess? Here's a hint...it was windy
all day :-) Yep the Wizard of Wind Rich Burnowski has been making his
Espada dance.
Young Cody picked up a really low score to a pop off early on but has
stuck around to put the hurt'n on the likes of me and many others...great young
man!

Skip Miller flying Perfect is also strong, and well I could go on
mentioning everyone because everyone is one of the 'mention-ables' in the
hobby.

Keep in mind, this is NOT an amateur eventthis is a cash prize event
and its being run that way. "I's" are dotted and "T's" are being crossed, but
considering the talent level, no one has needed warning for anything.
5 rounds, one round short than the goal because of weather moving
in.

So we had a good day...you?Gordy
Home to see my wife for a day or two...36 years last Tuesday...I sent her
an really nice email from Long Island...and heading back out this
Tuesday

I used a product named "Flitz" with very good results on my CRV's
headlights covers. This product is very usefull for all kind of
polishing/cleaning. It is mild enough to polish blued metal gun parts
without removing the blue. I also used it to polish fiberglass fuselages.

see : *PASTE METAL, PLASTIC, FIBERGLASS POLISH & PAINT RESTORER*
http://www.flitz.com/

I think this is a "must have product"

I also used products made by Micromesh. They produce sandpapers that
can be used to polish aircrafts canopies. They produce sandpapers up to
12000 grade... :

see :

p.s. : I have no monetary interrest related to Flitz but I like it very much

[RCSE] World Soaring Masters: Day One

2006-09-22 Thread Ben Wilson
Got off to a little bit of a late start today, on account of rain
showers that started up *right* as my alarm went off in my tent here on
the spacious AMA Flying Site. CD Mark Nankavil (apologies on the
spelling) got things rolling as soon as it cleared up and we got in 4
remarkably rain-free rounds before calling it while we still had light
to pack up.
With the weather being as it is, you could call this the Fall 2006
Soaring NATS! Winds were a steady 15 MPH the entire day, gusting to 25
MPH according to wind gauges. I could count on one hand the number of
honest thermal turn attempts I saw today - surfing was the name of the
game. I'm not sure if anyone got their 12 minute tasks, though I know a
few who got very close. Thornburg mentions in The Old Buzzard Goes
Soaring, and I'll paraphrase here: "fly in all types of weather if you
want to win contests", and that is where those Soaring Masters in
attendance beat the pants off of the non-Masters. There are plenty of
guys out there who stay at home if it's overcast or blowing too hard -
today would've no doubt made them think twice about getting off the
couch. But where's the challenge in flying in pristine conditions? To
me, this hobby is about challenging, learning and expanding, and that's
why I'm here.

As far as what I've learned today, I figure that this high-wind stuff
requires a mindset that is similar to, but altogether different than
your normal calmer-air flying. If normal TD work is "macro", then
high-wind stuff is very "micro". Fine, clean control of your plane and
accurate deduction of what the fast-moving and quick-changing air was
doing in front of your ship were the keys to success today. The Masters
here did those things - and the rest of us hung on for dear life. Me?
Well, while I'm here at the Soaring Masters, I'm no Master yet! My goal
is to get on the first page of the results tomorrow :)

Yes, there was some carnage along the way - though honestly today was
the day to test the limits of all manner of equipment, airborne or
otherwise. Model throwers were the rule, not the exception along the
flight line today! Safety was on the minds of everyone after the
incident at the NATS with a pilot struck on the ground, and the winch
bosses where quick to hand out warnings and kindly suggest that someone
toss your plane. There were line breaks, but with NATS-like efficiency,
they were easily handled and the contest continued on. And while there
aren't "official" Turnaround Trolls, there was a good crew of kiddos and
of-legal-age volunteers out there doing a thankless job. Not to forget
Marney and the well-oiled machine in the transmitter impound - flawless!

The weather was heinous, and at the end of the 4 rounds, there wasn't a
perfect 4000 on the board even out of some of the best pilots from the
West Coast, East Coast or beyond the lower 48 states. I don't have the
Day One scores, unfortunately, but suffice it to say there are some
familiar names up there, but there are some unexpected as well. A good
contest, and anything could happen in the next two days. Thunderstorms
this evening and Saturday isn't looking any better - "may be severe with
damaging winds" in the afternoon. Another challenging day, but one that
hopefully the "Soaring Masters" will make the most of.
