no trouble for a company like this to list both figuresnot to

RE: [RCSE] Splatter

2005-05-23 Thread Bruce Hobbs
Years ago when I competed in the pylon wars at the Nats and at the NMPRA
Championship (National Minature Pylon Racing Association) the
transmitter check by oscilloscope was one of the first items that was
looked at in our extensive safety checklist before you could compete.
These 5 lb. birds at 180 mph were and are dangerous and the powers that
be wanted to make sure you had a good radio link. Over the years
several radio notables (such as Aberle, Waters and Orr) if I remember
right served yeoman's duty checking the competitor's transmitters. I
often stayed around until it traffic got light and asked the radio
person what I was looking at on the 'scope and they would explain what
you wanted and didn't want to see on the screen.
The clean 3/4 watt signal (all the FCC allows) and potentiometer
linearity I witnessed by the JR users going through the transmitter
check was enough to convert me in 1983 and I've flown JR ever since.
Nope.I'm not sponsored by JR.just love their radio!

As to splatter there were definitely some transmitters that were not
spot on frequency and there used to be radio techs that tuned the
receivers to the crystals you had as some crystals would be at the high
or low end of the frequency band and somehow the tech could tune the
receiver to more closely match the crystal in an effort to improve the
range / radio link. I'm referring to radios used prior to my switch to
JR.

I know I've experienced this in some big hand launch contests when you
have
12 radios on at the same time. I've had hits when I know no one is one

If it's true, shouldn't a transmitter frequency check be required at the

RE: [RCSE] Receiver Malfunctions after Contact with Power Lines

2005-05-17 Thread Bruce Hobbs

Doug and RCSE,

Browne didn't mention that the contact with the power lines occurred
within approx. 150-200 ft. of parked cars and after witnessing over the
years 4 events where sailplanes lit up the sky after hitting high
voltage lines.this one was by far the most spectacular.

The Ava hit the lines then a huge blue-white ball of electricity danced
down the lines for approximately 15-20 seconds all the while making a
sound like a nuclear powered arc weldervery scary. You had plenty of
time to see this one unlike others I've seen.

Then after the accident two formerly great range (150-200 ft. antenna
collapsed) aircraft all of a sudden had less than 25 feet. I
investigated and decided to look at the club members aircraft at home to
see what was wrong. Both equipped with JR receivers.

Then another club member launched his DLG and it crashed immediately and
I was standing next to him. I hadn't grasped what had happened yet but
then I said it looked like it had no range as it went in. Checked and it
had 5-10 ft. max range antenna collapsed and it has a Berg receiver.

Can't say definitively what caused these strange problems but all of a
sudden we have 3 dead receivers and there was a huge electrical
disturbance in close proximity.I'm guessing sensitive receiver
components were fried by the EMF.

RE: [RCSE] High-Start Story

2005-04-19 Thread Bruce Hobbs
My story involves the destruction of my first molded ship and a valuable
lesson learned. I had this wonderful flying Xantipa, a 127 16.5 /1.00
high aspect ration sailplane that Skip imported. Weighed a metric ton
but really soars well. About 1000 squares and 83 oz. As a new sailplane
pilot the ship was so good it put the hurt on the local Emeralds, Makos,
Sapphires, Stork, etc. and I didn't know beans about proper setup.

The locals are all cambering up their entire trailing edge on their
lower aspect ratio AMA TD ships and chiding me about my granny launch
setup with only flaps deflected so I decide to get a little more
aggressive and bring in the ailerons to make it launch even better.

Aft CG, fairly small v-tail, little wind, full camber trailing edge,
long skinny wings with narrow chord, high start of moderate
tension..ta d..disaster in the making!

Hard throw, swerve left, right, left, right then full tip stall with
ship instantly inverting at about 75-100 ft. of altitude with me pushing
forward to try an inverted pull-out but...forgot to take off the
launch camber during this relaxing episode.ship still attached to
hi-start and moving toward stake quickly with me pushing to pull out
inverted. then entry into the most wicked inverted flat spin you can
envision with the hi-start giving the inverted flat spin all kinds of
energy and rotational speed due to its ongoing downward pull.

Ship probably made 20-30 rotations and then impact and here is the sad
part.I think I could have saved it if I would have had the presence
of mind to take out the launch camber..but as they say, I'll never
know.

Yep.winches are definitely safer when used my knowledgeable pilots.

Rob,

Thanks for a real-world empirical test /

sending data in concentrated bursts. Using sophisticated logging equipment we
so far have been unable to determine where the transmission is coming from and
that is very discomforting when you are flying a nice ship.

Dear ballasting buddies,

I built for a Sharon Pro 3.7 which
everyone that has held or owned one knows has the skinniest fuselage known to
man.a tungsten ballast system that loaded under the wing via a small
opening into a carbon fiber tube. I got the machineable tungsten round rod
which is approximately 97% as heavy as pure tungsten and tried to cut it into small
sections on my Atlas 6 lathe..not a chance in hell that was gonna
happen. A club members
father worked at an aerospace lab doing prototype machining and his father
tackled the machinable tungsten and 5 hours later had it cut into
nice 2 oz. chunks..cant imagine how much it would have cost if I
had to pay the regular rate. All said and done the Sharon could ballast up an additional 1.85 lbs. over minimum weight and
if I had to pay the going price the ballast system probably would have ran an
additional $400 for materials and machining. My $.02

You say it's an alloy. Do you know
what the tungsten is alloyed with? There are some tungsten alloys that have
been specifically formulated to be easily machined, your bar may be some of
that. Get yourself a good hacksaw blade, chuck that sucker in a vise and try it
out. If the tools you have available won't cut it then find a machinist with
some cobalt bits. If you don't know somebody send me the bar and I can cut it,
but I'll probably have to keep the scraps :-) The post office is

the hi-start thus making the energy and resultant launch height fairly close to
what the DLGs boys can get. Yep, the zip start guys are anchored in place and
cannot move around the field like the DLG throwers.but.nothings
perfect.and it gets a lot of guys out to the field flying their older
ships and having fun.

[RCSE] Pager / Interference

2004-10-25 Thread Bruce Hobbs

Howard Mark and anyone flying virtually anything other than
EPP!

Our field in Austin, TX has also
experienced very random, intense hits on the higher (predominately) and lower (less
number of occurrences) frequencies of late. A ham with a $6000 frequency
scanner monitored our site for 2-3 hours a couple of times and saw spikes of
strong RF on 66 MHz if I remember right. What we dont know (along with
many other RF issues too long to enumerate here) is how much RF it takes to
overwhelm the average receiver used for our aircraft. Aircraft with new $200
dual conversion PCM receivers to
$50 PPM receivers have been hit..the aircraft crashed.all tried
and proven setups that crashed and yet worked perfectly minutes later.scary
as hell! I can only hope that AMA is listening so that we are not all relegated
to foamies in lieu of reliable radio control of our models.

It seems that the hounds of hell have been
unleashed on the RF spectrum and will virtually preclude having top of the line
aircraft UNLESS we can obtain exclusive use frequencies or a new technology becomes
available that will eliminate these new evolving sources of interference!

HUGE DISCLAIMER:
I am not a radio expert or RF knowledgeable..but I do recognize
empirical data and I know that something is changing in our radio environment (and
not for the better) as Ive been flying since 1977!

These are my observations onlyI have no agenda
other that wanting to fly without being shot downno flames please.and
no response to any that might appear!

[RCSE] E-mail vs. forum

2004-07-15 Thread Bruce Hobbs

I throw in
with Jared on his comments about he prefers the e-mail format BECAUSE if anyone
knows it is him. He single handedly set up our club's website, discussion
forum, photo section, and all the other segments that make up a really great
website. He has really raised our clubs exposure and given us increased stature
with the politicos and bureaucrats in our area. One who has done all that truly
knows the advantages and disadvantages of both systems and I concur
wholeheartedly. My $.02 also!

[RCSE] Antennas for the MPX 4000

2004-01-29 Thread Bruce Hobbs

I know Fred from my travels and know that he knows what he is talking
about as a highly skilled scientist before his retirement. He flys the
4000 and knows it well. So Fred...what antenna do you use or
recommend for the MPX 4000 users when making some of those over the
horizon flights with 140 plus sailplanes?

[RCSE] RE: Soaring V1 #2066

[IMAC] Voltage Indicator

Jim Frickey was the first sailplaner I had contact with that used the
onboard LED a little over 2 years ago. I thought it was a great idea,
bought 4 and equipped all my big sailplanes with them. Soon all the
Austin, TX flyers had them and to date it has saved 2 ships I'm aware of
because as Jim Bacus said, You wiggle the sticks to load the system,
and it is readily apparent the relative state of charge. After a few
flights using the monitor you know just how many LED sectors the
indicator will regress in relation to battery state of charge. Then that
one not so magical day occurs when you notice the LEDs are retreating
much faster than normal for the number of flights you've flown and after
making sure that there are not other causative factors like
under-charging, bad connections, etc. it becomes free airplane day!
Meaning you get a new battery pack and save yourself the trouble and
expense of replacing the sailplane that would now be dead had you not
caught the bad battery in time! Thanks Mr. Frickey.
