Re: [RCSE] LSF discussion - some thoughts
Why on earth would anyone be satisfied to be an LSF Sportsman Level V when you could be a 'real' LSF Level V with just a little more dedication and perseverance? I found this segment of the hobby about eight years ago. I joined my local club and I learned that they enjoyed distant contests and was thrilled when I was invited along. I saw the fun had at these events and bought myself an older camping trailer so I could immerse myself in the activities afforded at these gatherings. I signed up with the LSF and began that journey. Being around the 'big boys' forces you to learn all the aspects of soaring that make you a better pilot. When the goal and return tasks became part of the path, an old BMW convertible was purchased. Many of my flying buddies have had the pleasure of strapping into the back seat while I speed down the course. These purchases to allow me to enjoy this hobby cost less than many guys spend on a couple of planes. The discussion at the field today concerned the threads here and at RC Groups. The consensus is that if you want to achieve LSF Level V you'd better be willing to do what it takes. No one wants to get the 'lite' Level V voucher. One analogy was that if you want to be a champion bass fisherman, you'd better have a boat, preferably a fast one. Dan - Original Message - From: Jim Deck [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: RCSE soaring@airage.com Sent: Wednesday, September 13, 2006 1:06 PM Subject: [RCSE] LSF discussion - some thoughts OK, I've read nearly all the comments on this topic in both forums and I'm ready to toss my two cents worth in the pot. If I were king, here's what I'd do to get my royal advisors started right after I explained the KISS principle. - Anyone wanting to become an LSF Sportsman MUST successfully complete the current requirements for Level I II(Contest reqm't included). Why? First, these two levels do a lot toward producing a competent sailplane pilot. The competition requirement of Level II isn't that stiff and at least exposes the participant to competition. Second, by making Level II mandatory, a pool of Sportsman pilots becomes available who at least understand what the LSF program is all about and can appropriately serve as witnesses for those in pursuit of higher levels. - After completing Level II, the requirements for further Sportsman Levels should include the current non-competitive tasks in Levels II - V. To keep things simple (a former LSF Secretary speaks here), perhaps repeats of these tasks might be required of the Sportsman. My personal opinion is the XC task of Level III should also be required as it currently stands as it, too, gives the pilot good introductory exposure to XC. - For Sportsman Levels IV V, perhaps a substitute for the XC tasks might be available but, for Sportsman Level V, both the 2 hour thermal and traditional 8 hour slope flight should remain. (Note that for some of the current Level V's - that's the only slope flying they've done.) Also, Sportsman Level V's should keep the 2 Level II witnesses requirement as well as that requirement helps promote the hobby's growth by its if you can't find 'em, grow 'em strategy. Respectfully submitted for your consideration, Jim Deck An afterward - for the LSF Leadership, this discussion couldn't have come at a worse time. The LSF sponsored Masters and the AMA Planning Meeting for the 2007 NATS re on the very near horizon. Remember that they are unpaid volunteers and cut them lots of slack while patiently waiting for their response. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Numbered drill bit question
I use a 1/16 bit, followed by a drop of thin CA after the clevises and control rod have been installed. I do each clevis at the end of the control rod individually, let it cure, cycle the surface through its range of movement and then do the same to the opposite end. If using a threaded rod I will then put a drop of thin CA on the threads where they enter the clevis once I am satisfied with the setup. This all sounds too permanent but works well and still allows disassembly when necessary. Looks like the air will be so sweet during the MidSouth that in order to cull the luckies from the talented, task times are likely to be in the 30 to 40min ranges and landing points will be measured with a micrometer, 1 point per 1/100 of an inch...no worries though because we have lazer measuring devices like in tennis matches, so landings points will be reported automatically. Also special devices will be taped to each plane that senses when the tow hook is detached, telemetry will start special hand held countdown timers supplied to each contestant. (timers will also be supplied lawn chairs and cool drinks). Pilots will have Hooters girls with big clear fans keeping them cool while flying, sorry guys only two per pilot. We tried to get 'mist machines' to cool the entire field, but it caused the grass to grow so fast, we'd have to cut it mid day...so that was out. The banquet will be to die for! Fried Green Tomatoes, Frickled Pickles, Ribs and Cat fish fingers. There is a wayyy outside chance that the banquet will be held on a Paddle Wheel River Boat that would pick us all up right next to the fieldbut don't hold your breath on that one. :-) For SURE, there will be a huge supply of old friends to fly with from all over the country...that alone will be enough to make it the second most fun contest this side of Visalia :-) So what are you bringing to fly? [RCSE] JR 6102 TX
Hi All-- A buddy of mine has a JR 6102 six channel radio and wants to set it up to work on an RES plane with two spoiler servos. I assume I can plug the rudder servo into the Aileron channel to get the right stick to be the primary control for the rudder. One spoiler would be plugged into the Throttle channel and the other spoiler could be plugged into any other unused channel and then mixed to the Throttle channel to get both spoilers to work off the spoiler (throttle) stick. Finally the elevator could be mixed to the throttle channel to provide elevator compensation when the spoilers are deployed. Will this set up work or is there a better way? Thanks for your help. As a professional pilot who has watched people build and buy homes closer and closer to airports that have been there for many tens of years, and some a hell of a lot longer than that, I question their intelligence, education and common sense. Airports are and always will be good for the community, especially from a financial perspective! And those that are home to military squadrons play an even more important role! Most airports generate more steady-state revenue for the local community than people ever seem to realize. And why is it that when people have to travel somewhere and choose to go by airline, the average joe traveling public seems to always be complaining about how much of a pain it is to get to the airport because it's so far away, etc. Everyone seems to want an airport nearby when it serves their personal purposes, but are quick to condemn them if an airplane flies overhead. And those that complain about ticket prices on airlines have no clue what it costs to operate an airplane or airline. Airlines RARELY make much if any profit at all. Most operate in the red! Airlines operate on such thin margins that few people in their right mind would ever invest in one! The incredible lack of understanding and general ignorance of what's involved in supporting and operating aircraft is not just limited to the general public, but sadly also includes those that actually work in the industry (It's all I can do to keep from blowing up when I listen on a discrete frequency to some airline pilots complaining about their contracts, pay and benefit packages as we cruise along at 40,000' over the Atlantic or Pacific routes sometimes). It's really a sad thing. *sigh* okay, I'll get off my soapbox now. Sorry to all for my little rant off-topic... BUT before I go... how can anyone not be turned on by the sound of 50,000 pound thrust G.E. or Pratt and Whitney engines in afterburner, even if it IS at O-dark thirty in the morning? Re: [RCSE] Re: template material choices?
I just take the .pdf on a CD to FedEx Kinko's and have it printed full size on their paper. Lay it out on the foam, follow the edges carefully while cutting the first time and it can't get much cheaper than that. Store the cut plans carefully and just lay them on the foam again when it's time to cut another one. It sounds like I may have a few more friends than you and I have cut lots of Edges, Sukhois, Ultimates, Pitts' and Extras for them, plus a bunch of each for me. What's the best template material in terms of a workable compromise between workability, durability, accuracy and cost? I think PC board material would be overkill, it's only blue foam, even if I make three sets of spares, I think it's going to be used for all of an hour to make up all the components, but should the worst happen, I guess I would have them on file to pull out, but not often. Then there's the remote possibility friends might wanna use them too... pretty remote, as I have so few friends;-) I was thinking of using the rolled coiled metal flashing common in roof and gutter repair, or maybe just cheap balsa sheet (not contest grade or even any particular grain), with plumbers tape run around the edges or something? [RCSE] New Year's Day Woody Postal Contest and Other Activities
Hi All-- I told all of you that it wouldn't rain on our parade! We were worried though and so were the promoters of the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl. If you saw either of these events on TV you saw our flying conditions since we are only a few miles east of Pasadena. We saw sun, clouds, a slight breeze and no rain. Beginning temps were in the low 40's, climbing to the low 60's and then dropping by mid-afternoon. Yes, some of the guys wore shorts. Our day began at about 8:00 with Major and crew setting up the winch equipment. Meanwhile some of the electric guys tore up the skies with their Slow Stiks, PT-17s, Edge 540s,Tempests and hotliners. Once the winch was ready Mike Reagan hooked up his AVA for the first thermal flight of the year. When Tom Finch showed up with his new Vandal Mike handled the maiden toss and then maiden winch launch. I'm sure you will hear more about this molded plane real soon. Larry Jolly assembled his old Comet, held a class on how to read the air using visible moisture (clouds)accumulation in the sky and then headed to the winch to begin his nearly 3 hour adventure. Most of the time the 16' span was difficult to see due to his altitude, especially when he flew into a cloud. Spoiler deployment and up elevator eventually resulted in the plane tumbling back into view. Others, like Merrill Brady, Henry Aranceand Major Anderson, followed Larry's lead and while they had great flights couldn't keep up with the Comet. Sadly, Henry had to bail out of his thermal due to visibility issues and his Aquilitos shed a wing panel. The plane was destroyed but we all marveled as the shed wing went back up and eventually disappeared in the clouds. The BBQ was fired up and lunch was served. Larry was still up there so he and his dog Baron shared a hotdog that was delivered to the flight line. Eventually Baron got bored and took a nap but woke up in time to see Larry land just short of 3 hours. That time, however, wasn't enough to have the longest flight in Ray's contest. It seems Arizona had some pretty good air too.. Overall, a great way to start a new year. Good friends, good weather, good contest, good memories. You can see how some of us did at http://www.swsapopoff.8k.com/PostalContest010105.htm. Pictures will be up soon. Dan

[RCSE] SWSA Contest Results
Today was a gorgeous day in southern California once the fog burned off. What made this day even better is the fact that the second Sunday of each month is the SWSA monthly contest. While we waited for the skies to clear, I passed out sheets of paper to all present. At the end of the pilot's meeting I started the watch and gave everyone five minutes to design and make a paper airplane. Can you imagine the sight of no less than 63 grown men simultaneously throwing paper airplanes at me? Congratulations to Keith Kindrick for the longest distance flown! Next up was most likely the largest monthly club contest you'll find anywhere with sixty-three entrants. And tough competition too! Some guy named Joe stopped by and we were sure to keep him away from the basketball backboards this time. We couldn't keep him out of the trophy pictures though. See the unofficial scores at http://members.aol.com/PopOffSwsa/Gateway.html. Come back later this week for the full write up in our fine newsletter. Finally was our bi-monthly HLG contest run by Henry Rodriguez. A small turnout but still great fun to watch. Yeah, Joe flew that too, but for once todayhis trophy didn't have 1st Place on it asJohn Erickson was able to sneak into the lead. Like I said, a gorgeous day in southern California Dan
[RCSE] Invitation to SWSA's Hey Man, This Ain't Phoenix! Contest
Here comes the first full weekend of February and there go a bunch of glider guiders heading to Arizona. The SWSA group's regular monthly contest was supposed to be this weekend but was moved back a week so we could all go to the SWC and get back home to fly the club event. Well, for some reason most of us opted not to head east so we have decided to put on the Hey Man, This Ain't Phoenix! contest this Sunday, February 8th at the SWSA field in Covina, CA. All AMA fliers are hereby invited to this one-time event. The details are: Sign ups: 8:30 Pilot's Meeting: 9:00 Task: Three flight, 21 Minute Add'em Up, no maximum time Landing: Standard 100 point tape Awards: None Food: Free BBQ hot dogs, chips and soda for everyone The unusual twist to this event is that the field will also be open to fun fliers throughout the event. The handlaunch contest will follow SWSA's regular monthly contest, which is also open to all interested parties. The first flight of the regular monthly contest will be at 9:00 A.M., and the entry fee will be $4.00 per Class. It is estimated that the handlaunch contest should start about 1:00 P.M. Entry fee for the handlaunch contest will be $5.00. Henry Rodriguez will be the contest director. Registration for the handlaunch contest will close at 11:30 so Henry and his assistants can get the participants entered in the computer and have the matrix set prior to the contest start. [RCSE] SWSA's New Year's Day Activities
The forecast for New Year's Day looks very favorable at this time. I guess the storm clouds have been properly chastised and ordered to get their funk out of southern California for the Rose Parade. We are lucky to be unintended recipients of the same mandatory good weather. Therefore I will have the equipment out and set up by 9:00 am for a great day of fun flying and other festivities. Be sure to comb your hair, wear clean underwear and iron your pants. Sharp creases optional. "Other festivities" you say? Yes! If you are a subscriber to the balsasailplanes Yahoo! group you already know about the postal contest for planes with built-up wings that is being conducted by Ray Hayes of SkyBench. The contest is being flown all over the country and the winner will be the person that is able to log the longest timed flight with a built up woody plane on New Year's Day. Entries are due in by 8:00 pm CST today and final times are due in by 8:00 pm January 1, 2004. The winner receives a $50 credit toward any SkyBench product. Gene Hays has proposed we do a similar and simultaneous event at our field open to anyone that flies with us on New Year's Day. I second the proposal and hereby set the rules: 1. Open to any and all planes (except slimers). 2. Launch by any means. 3. Must be timed by a designated timer of your choice. 4. Land anywhere you want. 5. Must land by 12:00 noon. 6. Unlimited launches. 7. Wear a smile. The winner will be the pilot that has the longest flight recorded by noon. If you are in the air at 12:00 your timer will stop the clock and the time indicated will be recorded. Since we don't have the same financial resources as SkyBench, our award will be free soda(s) to whomever attempts a launch. You will also most likely be photographed (thus the previously mentioned dress code) and I'm sure the PopOff editor will make sure it is published for all to see. The flier with the longest recorded flight will get preferred placement in the PopOff in addition to the free sodas. Come on out and have some fun with a great bunch of guys. Dan ps--See http://swsapopoff.8k.com/Dec03/Page01B.htmif you need to find out who we are and where we fly.

Re: [RCSE] Eclipse
Mike-- Buy the Futaba--it is a wonderful radio that will do virtually anything you want. The versatility of being able to reassign switch functions and the option to configure the open PMIX functions are worth much more that the few bucks you might save getting the Hitec. There are a couple of vendors that will sell just the TX for about $230. You won't be sorry... I was reading an article on the new Hitec Eclipse and was wondering if anyone on the list had more to say about this Tx. It sure looked like it would fit the bill for the more frugal among us. It sounds like you can't re-assign functions to different sticks but it does seem like you can get it to do most things we need for slope racing and TD. I do not yet fly 6 servo ships but I would like to soon, so I have been eyeing this Tx and the Futaba 8UAF. Any comments other than, don't be such a cheap bastard, just but the Stylus! ? Re: [RCSE] Highlander/non-foamie choice
I would suggest the 2M Gnome from Midway for a first built-up ship. $45 at Hobby People and able to take a real winch launch. Can be built with or without spoilers. Flies MUCH better than a Highlander and is quite durable for a wood plane. Re: [RCSE] extreme, extreme, extreme...etc.
I don't know about the fields you fly at, but here in So Cal many of our fields are surrounded by lots of houses, streets, churches, freeways and millions of eyeballs. It is an unusual day when we don't have at least several spectators stop by to look and ask questions. First they want to know where the motor is and then want to know why we use the a piece of string before we fly. Every one of us takes all the time necessary to educate our guests and invite them in to give soaring a try. They all look at all of the planes sitting around, especially admiring the shiny moldies resting on their stands, but seem to be attracted to the simple bent wing examples. I don't know if they fear the investment in a moldie or realize the RES planes are more appropriate to begin with, but most interest is in the simple wooden built up planes. A number of these visitors come back again and again, finally accepting our invitation to join us. Usually, in short order, a club member will then offer to give them an older but fully serviceable plane to learn to fly with. It is with great satisfaction that we watch our new member progress to the point where they can launch, fly and land with only a few words of advice or encouragement. The care they lavish on their old hand-me-down can teach us how we should treat our planes. Yes, this is a great hobby and bringing in the new fliers is definitely worth the time and effort spent. I would like to hear the comments on this as well. I've got an Xterm parked on the runway waiting for the wind to calm down but I noticed the same thing with my LB2. I initially had the LB2 balanced right dead on and it did the roller coaster too. At first I added weight and it go it under control but I did not like the increase in weight. I removed the weight and trimmed in a little down and after doing this several times, I got a happy medium. I have a little extra weight and a little down trim and I like the way it handles. Dave - Original Message - From: "Daniel Boyer" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 16, 2001 2:20 PM Subject: [RCSE] porpoising solutions??? I took my new Xterminator out for a test flight yesterday evening (I found a field with well packed snow that I could walk on)... First off I have to say that it floats like a dandelion (and this was in VERY still air which was giving me air times of ~12 seconds with my 11.5oz Zagi THL)... The first throw, it glided out nicely but started trying to porpoise... I brought it back to me and checked the CG... It was in the dead center of the recommended CG. I added pushed the battery pack to the very front of the nose (moving the CG forward about 1/8") and gave it another toss... it still porpoised so I brought it back and added a couple of coins to the nose (bringing the CG about 1/4" ahead of the recommended CG)... gave it another toss and it flew fine (although wasn't as responsive as before. I added the weight to the front to correct the porpoising, because in the past when my planes have done this, everyone at the field said to just add nose weight. I always end up with my CG's in front of the recommended CG's because of the porpoising, but then I read about people flying with cg's behind the recommend placement. This has made me wonder if moving the CG forward is truly the correct correction for the porpoising. Is there another correction for this porpoising tendency other than CG movement? Thanks, Daniel BTW: I only got to toss the Xterminator about 5 times b/c on the 5th time I decided to give the launch preset a try, so I switched to the model memory that I thought I had programmed with the latest launch preset setup... Gave it a toss, saw the plane starting to loop backwards so I switch the preset switch back in the opposite direction to which it responded by doing a nose dive (despite giving it full up elevator... I could see that the elevator was still showing down, so this was not a stall...) it hit the ground and cracked the fuse in numerous places (I have since fixed it w/ about and hour of work)... I assessed the damage and determined that it wasn't anything major, then I tried to figure out what happened... I checked my mixing and quickly realized that I had chosen the wrong model memory and that the switch had been having no effect, but instead my throttle stick was in control (I was apparently hitting the throttle stick in my paniced state causing the down elevator input). ie: ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK YOUR MODEL MEMORY SELECTION!!! ;-) I'm going to try to give it another try this weekend if the snow holds off. [RCSE] Poway BOMBER Combat Results
Hi all-- Well, here they are--the results for the Bomber Combat event that Jerry allowed us to stage at his very successful and fun Poway Combat Slope Race. Thanks Jerry for all the support! Before I tell you the results, here is what the event was all about and the scoring details. The squadrons consisted of four members--one bomber pilot and three fighter/interceptor pilots. Two squadrons were launched for a five minute engagement. The bomber was any EPP plane with a 60" or larger wingspan. The fighter/interceptors were any 48" EPP plane. Scoring was one point for any contact with your opponent's bomber; five points for a kill on your opponent's bomber; one point for a kill on your opponent's fighter/interceptor. The bombers were not allowed to make any offensive maneuvers, only evasive maneuvers while flying the CSR course. Fighter/interceptors could stay with the bomber to protect it or attack the opposing bomber and fighters. It didn't take long before all of the fighters realized the bombers could do a decent job of evading the enemy. The bombers in our event were one Highlander and three 60" wings. The fighter/interceptors were mostly wings, with a couple of Bandits and ME-262s thrown in for realism. Two rounds were flown with the scores combined for the final score. While the first round was slow as strategies were formulated, the second round is where the action really heated up. The flying became much more aggressive and the crowd really got involved and cheered on their favorite squadron. If you are looking for a way to liven up your next event, this might just be the ticket. First Place: 29 Points Temple Hill Slope Squadron Bomber Commander: Woods Robinson Hitchborn Patton Second Place (Tie): 13 points Bomber Commander: Saunders Gillman Warner Brooks Bomber Commander: LaFontaine Burns Vozenilek Peterson Third Place: 11 Points Bomber Commander: Harts Campbell Woodfine Greenwood Thanks for your time.
