Re: [RCSE] Your Genie LT/S

My question is, how well does it float?

  Harley and all,
The Genie LT/S works as advertised but I haven't been able to maximize it's
potential because I still have just a few hours of flight time with it. I am
also trying to configure a new radio and doing both at a contest, which has
been the only flying the Genie has done, makes it an interesting task.

One aspect of construction I noticed important is a good joint between the
inner and outer panels. With the blade joiners, a lot of stress is put on those
joiner boxes and a bit of slop does develop with heavy launches, as I'm prone
to do. Why, I don't know but I guess I've just got a heavy foot and better
launch management might be in order. The tips do flex a bit but I have never
come close to being concerned about it.

I also am considering adding a bit more down travel to the ailerons at the tip
of the surface, I do notice a bit of sluggishness in a turn and wonder if a bit
more deflection might improve this. Differential right now is a pretty hefty
8-10 to 1 and I don't think I need to worry about adverse yaw, true? Pretty
heavy use of left stick is needed to keep a nice coordinated turn but that's
okay. I actually think my flying has improved greatly by exercising that left
thumb a bit more; starting turns with rudder gives me some good indications
about what the air is doing around me and whether I'm turning into good or bad
air.

I guess I'm still looking to fly this like a handlaunch...:)

Thanks for the efforts with your designs and research, Harley.

it was great to see everyone at the NATS again, even if it was just for one day.     a few weeks ago, i posted a fictional news story of archaeologists finding a plane in the ice of the Himalayas.  I just found out at the NATS that Gordy never saw it.     Does anyone still have it in an old folder somewhere? [RCSE] Re: Brrrr that's cold -- a news report...

2006-07-06 Thread Dana Flemming
Dateline Nargorth, Tibet, February 22, 2229

Hikers stumbled upon a curious sight last week in the high ranges of the Himalayas.  They thought they saw something out of place on the windswept snowpack, and diverted from their path to investigate.

They took several photographs of the phenomenon, having no recollection among them as to what this strange object may have been.  Having made their way to the base of the mountain, they contacted local shirpas, who told them the mythical tale from ancient days.  It spoke of a man who would climb the mountain, on a quest to find an object he had lost years before in a far off land.  He would be gone for days, and then return with frostbitten cheeks, and a frustrated frown.  As he would walk by, he could be heard mumbling to himself.

Archaeologists swarmed to the site this week, in an effort to recover the artifact, which was believed to have been over 200 years old.  Carefully cutting the entire block of ice in which it was encased, it was taken to the local museum, which had trouble identifying the shape of the object.  Then, a vague memory arose in one of the researchers.  Looking to WFI (WorldInfoBank), he tracked its origin to a town in the area of the the world formerly known as Kentucky.

Finally, in a last ditch effort to bring a resolution to the puzzle, the museum curator acquiesced to the demand that the object be cut open.

Inside, a cryptic message was found.  On a rolled up piece of paper, brittle with age, were the words, written over and over.  The shirpas say it was the same message the man would mumble on his downhill climbs.

"Only if I practice, will I ever beat DP..."
"Only if I practice, will I ever beat DP...""Only if I practice, will I ever beat DP..."
Scientists continue the search, but doubt that they will ever determine the true identity of the owner.

But after many repetitions of the message was the name...

"Gordy"

Just one more mystery from ages of old in the High Himalayas.

[RCSE] reflections

2005-08-05 Thread Dana Flemming
This is a message that i have been threatening to write for months.  An early exit from the NATS gave me thinking time about it on the road home.

Tom Kiesling's line in an email said: "a contest is what you make it."
I'd like to add to that -- it's what those around you make of it, too.

for example:

--At the 1st contest i ever flew (a Cinci Memorial), Cap'n Jack and Karen taking us (Jim Carlton and me) to his home in Cinci to sample some of his personally brewed beer, and do some repair work on a plane -- when he had just met me that day.

--When a plane i was flying died a horrible death (this is a theme that will recurr below) at the first NATS i flew in, Doug Barry tried repeatedly to stick a beautiful Peregrine in my hands to fly -- and he didn't know me from Adam.

--When i wasn't going to fly in the handlaunch golf a few years back, Doug and Denny of Polecat actually reworked one of Doug's left handed dhl's to righthanded, then taught me to discus in a few minutes before going to the course.  The result was one of the funniest moments in my life.  As a late entry, i was following the field, and they were all gathered on the 9th green to watch me finish (seems to me there were brown bottles in most of their hands...).  After some goodnatured comments about 'delay of game', the assemblage cheered loudly when my plane circled below green level, then crested the uphill approach with just enough momentum to float 'into the cup'.  One of the VERY few times i have ever had cause to 'take a bow' in soaring.

--when my Barracuda shed a stab on launch and died a loud death in the hardpan of the NATS field, Mark Nankavil was timing for me.  A few months later, a box showed up at my door unannounced -- a Big Bird kit from Mark, with servos donated by Alden Shipp to ease the pain.

--a NATS flight when Mike Stump timed for me -- it may have been my hands on the sticks, but it was Mike's max time.

--A note of appreciation from Cal Posthuma, after I had the privilege of presenting the Spirit of Soaring Award to him.

--Peter Goldsmith providing me with a freq module for my 388, and then an rx crystal to match.

--great talks with Marna, Johnny, Jim Deck, Alden, The Cap'n, Doug and others way too numerous to list

--and of course, constant help and valued time with my best bud, Jim Carlton.

I have always said that some of the best people you'll ever meet are in the soaring community.  We may get GPS once in a while, but it's a great group.

Thanks for making it fun.  I'm going to miss it...

Jim's idea is a good one!  it would be great to identify ahead of time the weekends to take off to fly -- especially those of us who work weekends and have to arrange coverage!

Maybe someone could simply receive all the listings from clubs and become a clearinghouse, posting the contest dates, website, and a contact person on a central website that would be regularly referred to on the RCSE, so anyone could access it!

hope someone does it, because with all due respect, the list in the back of the ama mag just doesn't stay current enough!
