[RCSE] md80

2006-10-19 Thread Harry DeBoer

One day the pilot of a Cherokee 180 was told by
the tower to hold short of the runway while a MD80 landed. The MD80 landed,
rolled out, turned around, and taxied back past the Cherokee. Some quick- witted
comedian in the MD80 crew got on the radio and said, "What a cute, little plane.
Did you make it all by yourself?"Our hero, the Cherokee pilot, not
about to let the insult go by, came back with: "I made it out of MD80
parts. Another landing like that and I'll have enough parts for another
one."

Strother Congratulations to Marc Gellart the
2006 OVSS overall winner! This guywas on fire all year with three 1st place
finishes. He was tough to beat, Iknow from flying against him all the time.
Interesting also was his weaponof choice: The Insanity. This plane has great
hang time! Congratulations also to OVSS Overall Sportsman winner
Pat Crosby ! You arean expert now, as you proved Sunday by finishing 3rd
place. The weather started off cold and foggy both days but warmed up
into the70's. The sky was a hazy blue with piercing sun and no clouds all
weekend. The weird thing was there was there was hardly any wind if any
at times. Thethermals were few and far apart both days so you could really
get in troubleif you did not find some good air to work soon after launch.
Another strangeanomaly that occured both days was the appearance of the
floating spiderwebs. As the air warmed up so did the amount of webs and
strands in the airby the thousands! Sometimes it got so thick it was good
for reading thermalsand you could also see the shape created by the lift.
Neat stuff. PaulSherman flew with gusto all weekend taking his Espada to the
limits of thefield and working some really light air to earn him 2nd
and 1st placefinishes. Rich Burnoski dominated Saturday with his Espada RL
for the win.It was a really challenging 2 days of flying and this always
makes for amore fun and interesting contest. It has been
a another great year of flying in the OVSS contest series. The Man-On-Man
format is alot of fun and it really makes it a soaringcontest (as opposed to
landing) contest. Thanks to all the clubs and CD'sand people who hosted the
events. Also a big thank you to John Diniz, MarcGellart, Horizon and JR for
their donations and time. Can't wait until next year! See you at

The link bellow is to the WMSS club site
where Dennis Hoyles wife Jean's pictures are. Jean did a excellent
job.
Everything went well last night from the
test toss to the flights after. The Spoiler is extremely effective and needs
very little travel, the approach to the spot predictable and steady, no RES
wobble. This weekend will be my first contest with the S-AVA and I'm sure it
will not dissapoint!

All I can say is WOW what a floater, I can't
wait to get her ballasted up and see what she can do for speed. This thing is
HUGE and nimble two words I never thought could occupy the same plane but the
S-AVA is an anomaly a freak that I'm glad to own!!

[RCSE] Super AVA

2006-08-09 Thread Harry DeBoer

 I swore I wouldn't do
this but I broke down and bought a Super-AVA. After seeing their performance at
the Nat's it's hard to deny this planes ability to hang. Well after calling and
asking if they had mailed the key separately for the sport tube (DAH!) and
finding it was taped to the rear handle. I felt as though I didn't deserve such
a gem of a plane LOL.

I picked up a Yellow
fuse with Violet wings, man is this thing pretty! After reviewing the contents
of the Sport tube I was convinced that I had the makings of a great floater! I
checked the link on Kennedy's site http://www.rcsoaring.com/docs/AVA_Instructions.pdfand
found a very well written set of recommendation's using these as well as the
instructions on the Kennedy site Iwas very comfortable with the direction
I was heading.

In just a few nights after work (around 8
hours) I have this monster ready for flight. I can't wait to get out tonight and
give her a test flight or two! At 43oz. all up this is the most insanely light
plane I have ever put together. I plan on taking several pic's of my efforts in
putting the S-AVA together and will be posting these latter or I can send to
anyone interested, just ping me off line and I will get them to
you.

I don't think that 2-meter is in jeopardy, though I would like to make a
few points to reinforce it's importance in the overall soaring world:

1. This hobby needs more youth(s) to continue to grow.

2. Youths (and many new soarers) don't have the experience or the money
to fly big ships.

3. Soaring is and will remain a hobby where competition is part and
parcel of the experience.

4. 2-meter at the NATS allows those new fliers to compete at a national
level in an event that they alone (and not their plane) are the
determining factor.

Ed Wilson achieved something special this year: he mentored a young dude
with a small ship (but big dreams) with the intention of taking him to
the NATS. It's a great goal, and one that we think will keep Lee and
others like him in this hobby. 2-meter at the NATS is the perfect event
to show new fliers what soaring is all about.

Since we already have, and will hopefully continue to have, a 2-meter
competition -- all we need is more Lee's, right? :)

The real question is why fly different classes in the first place?. If
the tasks are all the same, then why change to planes that have less
functionality or lower capability? Even F3J contests are just TD with a man
tow. So why are there
different events for the same thing?

Cross country is a distance task.
HL has a completely different task structure.
F3B is TD, Speed and Distance.

F3B, 2M, Unlimited, (Scale Aerotow?) and RES are all the same tasks for the
pilot with different planes, so why bother flying different classes to begin
with?

Marc,

We have had our differences, but if anyone attacks you for your
commitment
to your job their a fool! As for your lack of attention to the Nat's during
that time, WTF you were their and did one H#!! of a job!!! You have
absolutely nothing to apologize for.

As for NOS, I think the turn out for RES was weakened by it not being at the
Nat's. I also believe the reason you didn't hear any groaning about it not
being flown is that everyone was to busy trying to concentrate on the task
at hand. The LSF needs to be flexible this we know but please don't miss
interpret the lack of complaints as a willingness to let it die.

I initially had decided on the 'bird, but then I found it was NOT NOS
legal Moved it down my list behind the BD, but not much. I still
love the lines, but I had envisioned it as a 2 contest ship (NOS and
RES) - for a straight RES ship, I thought I'd go back and revisit all
that was out there.

I'm fishing for a Fall / Winter building project, and I've got a short
list put together. Any thoughts on the following. If you or a friend
have seen, flown, or built any of these, I'd like to hear your
thoughts.

Skybench's Bird - 100 or more or the 970 (as a nostalgia ship, too)
Polecat's Easy Bubble Dancer
MM GliderTech's Marauder (115)
* any others?

[RCSE] W.M.S.S. Woody

2006-06-26 Thread Harry DeBoer

As the CD all I can say is thank you to
everyone who participated 24 Saturday and 19 Sunday ,also to those who came and
helped (Larry Jeffries and others). This was the most fun event I have ever
attended. If you ever get the chance to get to one of the Woody
typecontest it is a must. The format allows for more flying in one day
then most get in a Month. Several pilots from the surrounding area asked when we
would be doing this again and all I can say is not soon enough!!

Ken Bates walked away with top honors both
days and the overall, Greg Smith took best model Sat, Harry De Boer had longest
flight at 1hr 20min 57sec on Sat.

Sunday Bob Robinson took best model and
Martin Doney had the longest flight at 7 min 57sec.

From the times of the longest flights you
can see the Saturday was incredible and Sunday was a struggle.

I'm making plans to attend as many of these
types of events as I can, but I will have to sneak in a Two Meter MOM now and
again!!

  Shoot man,

That's nuthin! I have a custom built canard skeeter,
optimized for downwind turns and optimal thermal rotation relating to the
rotation of toilet water and adjustable for flying above or below the
equator. In addition it is equipped with skegs, skags, thermal sniffer,
battery monitor, redundant battery pack and lost plane monitor. It has a
custom designed airfoil which is likely perfect because I must be an expert on
aerodynamics now as I have read at least two paragraphs of the instructions
for X Foil. As soon as I work out the issue of the canopy air brake
blanking out the tail on landing it will be perfect. Well that and the
  wing loading issue.

Interesting numbers from the LSF-NATS Entry pages.

Unlimited entries = 62

RES entries = 52

2M entries = 40 (65% of UNL, 77% of RES)

and the last time more then one of us would attend to the Nat's, let's get
rid of F3B. Then you could have four day's of unlimited! Why not just have
unlimited?

If you were to exchange Res with Two Meter on the schedule, Two Meter
entries would drop off faster than you could bat your big baby blues.
Unfortunately it would be the death of Two Meter at the Soaring Nats.

RE: [RCSE] Soaring Nats Entries

2006-05-03 Thread Harry DeBoer
90 percent of the pilots at the Nat's will never make the Team for the
USA
much less try out for it, so why are we moving/removing class's from their
Nat's so the few may have more practice time? I agree we should have a Team
but give them the time and place to do it right and don't diminish two
events while trying to make one better!

It seams to me every year about this time someone gets a bug up their
butt
about the way the Nat's are run and what class's should or shouldn't be
allowed? Remove the entry level class's and you can be sure of the future of
our HOBBY! As it is now it is difficult for some to compete against the
Factory sponsored pilots, or the guy who can afford to take time off from
work or family to practice, practice, practice.

Sorry TK but I had to. Toss me of this forum if you want, I'm tired of the
politics getting in the way of why we are here. These things are TOY
AIRPLANES for pete's sake! Go out and invite a kid to fly your plane, get
them involved! Two links below are things we in Michigan are doing I
challenge the rest of you to do the same!

There is another issue with F3X ... in the last few cycles the world
were RIGHT on top of the Nats. This prevents some probable F3Xers from
going for the following reasons.
The Worlds are during the same week and transportation is a problem,
packing is a problem.
Risking the airplane during the same week is a too risky ... They
would rather risk it during practice at the worlds (DARYL) .
   Time off from work .

The problem is not only related to F3B, F3J suffers the same... but
usually has more TD pilots willing to jump in.
There will be more entries in F3B... This year there is the problem of
getting new frequency modules for some too. Since some channels were not
available to normal F3B'ers.

Right now the Nats is the only F3B event in the country aside from the
Team Selections... Should we just call it a day and say we won't compete
in the worlds then?
Becasue that's what will happen if the TS is the only comp The AMA
has decided that if you don't have a minimum of I think 20 contestants
then they won't support that event anymore.
Remove the Nats and we are sure to drop F3B as a team event. Then the US
will be a NO SHOW since you can't get there without recognition from the
AMA.
