RE: [RCSE] Hello America! Stand By For News! DP is in the F3J World Fly Offs!

2008-07-04 Thread Klaus Weiss
Woke up this morning to find that Theo, Mike and Gregg didn't make the
flyoffs. I urge all Australians to applaud their efforts. Then I got REALLY
happy, as the sun shone in my bedroom window (it was raining yesterday) ..
DH is in the flyoffs.

While it would have been super to have all our seniors in the fly offs, I
think its especially neat to have our own twice W.C. David Hobby make it!

Applause all around for all out pilots and team members, they earned every
penny they had to spend getting there.

(Sorry Gordy ... I had to do it. I tried, but just couldn't help myself :-)
) Congrats to DP and good luck to him. I hope David or Sven take it out
though.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - oi, oi, oi.

While it would have been super to have all our seniors in the fly offs, I
think its especially neat to have our own three peat F3B guy and F3J World
Newbie Daryl Perkins make it! Despite equipment dramas and newbie (okay I
get to tease him a bit here) jitters, his teammates managed to keep him
focus'd !

Applause all around for all out pilots and team members, they earned every

Daryl.
My very thoughts. I was just thinking of the dozens of posts that
would have come, had Joe or Tom won. As it is, your junior team flew
fantastically, as did the seniors.
A real tough comp, when you look at the round by round scores. The pilots
had to fly pretty well perfect rounds - round after round, after round.
Davids last flight, where he had a mid air, and came in with a dislodged
wing tip and other damage to nail the spot, must have been great to watch.
There were some frantic calculations going on, to see if he needed to
relaunch. In the end he secured the WC by around 40 points. A terrific
effort, and one to be applauded and praised.
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - oi, oi, oi. :)
As you say, the Canadians and the rest of the world were tough competition.
Congrats to all the pilots, for achieving the levels required to fly in a
world champs.

[RCSE] WCH update -

2006-08-04 Thread Klaus Weiss
I know I am a patriotic German Australian, but thought I would mention to
those who haven't been following;

With the finish of round 11 yesterday afternoon, this draws an end to the
preliminary flights. The great news for Australia is that both David Hobby
in 7th, and Carl Strautins in 11th spot have qualified for the final fly off
show-down, fantastic achievement! Got to say though, Joe W did a huge
catchup, to end up in 2nd place for the prelimineries.

Fly off pilots-
 1.Arend Borst (CAN) 9992.70
 2.Joe Wurts (USA) 9984.20
 3.Rolf Oetter (CAN) 9982.90
 4.Hiroyuki Sakai (JPN) 9981.30
 5.Karl Hinsch (GER) 9975.00
 6.Jaroslav Tupec (CZE) 9967.00
 7.David Hobby (AUS) 9964.70
 8.Martin Rajšner (CZE) 9963.40
 9.Roy Dor (ISR) 9960.60
 10. Massimo Verardi (ITA) 9952.90
 11. Carl Strautins (AUS) 9945.40
 12. Sebastian Feigl (GER) 9914.80

The boys have mentioned that the weather conditions have changed
considerably over the past few days with grey overcast sky's, patchy rain
and very light thermic activity.

Round one of the fly offs starts at 18:00 hrs Sydney
time today, with the completion of all 4 rounds and a
new World Champ by 22:00 hrs.

Go the Aussies!

RE: [RCSE] After the 2006 NATS - 2 Meter Comments

2006-07-31 Thread Klaus Weiss
We have a great 2m series here in Australia. We have restrictions on 'full
house' models and fly basic 2 channel models. The Blejzyk First is a very
popular, super strong and efficient model used by about 70% of the
competitors. Carl Strautins, who is currently in Martin, representing us at
the WC's reckons that it is more difficult to fly one of these models well,
than it is to fly in the open class. He still manages to win or get very
high results in the 2m rounds.
There has been a resurgence of interest in this class, down under, and it
gives many pilots the option of competing in a class that is affordable to
them. It is also a relatively level playing field in regards to model
technology. The First however, can withstand 2 man tows or full winch tows,
with impunity, and launches a good deal higher than, say, a Sagitta or
similar, so there is an advantage for those who fly this model.
Good to see that there are a bunch of people who are still pushing for that
class to be maintained at your Nats.

Gordy.

 I
have been following the comp, and supporting the Aussie team, naturally J

Carl Strautins has had three 1000s
and a 996.5, plus a compulsory dropped round and is in 8th place
after 5 rounds.

Cody Remington, your terrific junior
competitor, has only had one 1000 and some high 999s and a 997 and is in
9th place. Some real close competition.

In the first round, Carl got off the line
in 2 seconds and got a 9.58 min flight and a 2m landing. He got the best
flight time in Rd1, but losing that 5 points on landing, put him in a narrow 5th
place in his heat.

All I can say, is Aussie, Aussie,

I wouldn't have thought that the SD-7084 airfoil is slope oriented.
It is used on a bunch of HLG and DLG gliders, as well as a number of TD

and the Starling Pro would certainly be amongst the top of the list. It
goes very well on the winch in TD contests and also shines on the slope.

Gordy.

 Sorry
mate, you didnt win. In fact you had some of the worst luck for
some time. First round you got two pop offs with a best flight time of 29
seconds. Next round, you landed out and only got a 2 minute flight. Third round
you lost a canopy on launch, for zero. You ended up stomping on your
model. Came in dead last. Theres always next year.

Carl won it yet again. To rub salt
into the wounds, he flew the last round in typical Carl fashion. He
launched, sat on the ground near a spot, put his Tx on the ground and flew the
round out by using his toes on the sticks. Did loops and rolls and still
won the heat. He did stand up and hit his spot landing by using his
thumbs on the sticks. Fog rolled in to finish the comp early, but a good
day all in all.

I have used the R700 for years, and fly in around 13 comps a year.
Lots of other pilots I know also use the R700. Never had a problem. In the
annual LSF comp, we have 12 pilots per heat, flying side by side. We fly
36mgHz band, but I can't see how it would make any difference to the Rx's
tuned to 72mgHz. I have also used the Schulze Rx, and it is a terrific

Not so Jim. We fly 2m comps here, and
they tend to be every bit as popular as Open class. We often get more pilots
at 2m comps than any other. Look at my website under Millennium Cup. I have
heard it said that 3m + models are easier to fly than 2m. I dont agree
with that, but they are certainly more efficient, launch higher and hang longer
than 2m models. I love flying 2m models, and one day, poppa Edgar

Gordy has just finished flying this round of the Heathcote Cup Open Thermal

camper. He flew very well, managing 3 x 1,000 pts (1st place in the round)
and a 947 in another round. He was disappointed in the Aus T.D. rules,
where it states if you lose part of your glider on launch, then it is a zero
score for that round - he lost a canopy. ooops. Came in 7th overall and
would have done much better if not for the zero score. He flew at Carl
Strautins club field yesterday, and commented that he saw a deer 'pad' on
the edge of the field. He then saw a couple of 'deer' laying down. They got
up and turned into what he thought were people. They hopped away, and Gordy
saw his first kangaroos in the wild. Good time had with him, as last year.
He is a good guy and a friend to us down here.

Re: [RCSE] 2-meters suck....??? Sure they do, but they do look Cool??!?!? Well some do....

2005-02-11 Thread Klaus Weiss
The annual 2m discussion time on RCSE. Lots of good TD pilots, just can't
afford to buy the molded and composite gliders flown by the 'extra good'
glider pilots. I know at least that is the case in Australia. We have a
very successful 2m TD comp series here, which is well attended and a lot of
fun. Tomorrow is the second round of seven comps through the year (yes we
get to fly ALL year) and we expect around 25 - 30 pilots competing. That is
very good, considering R.C. is tiny here, in comparison to the USA or
Europe. Two weeks time we have the Heathcote Cup Open class TD comp. There
is also a 2m class incorporated into the comp, and some of those pilots
figure pretty strongly in the top results, beating a swag of molded gliders
in the process. Gordy is going to try and get a trophy in this comp, and
seeing he flies and practices almost daily, I will be surprised if he
doesn't. Anyway, 2m is healthy in NSW, Australia.

CSD is still in business. Spoke to Robert a few weeks ago, and I

Re: [RCSE] F3J 2004 Reporting

2004-08-11 Thread Klaus Weiss
Thanks to Bill and Simon for finally making mention of the results in the
W.C. F3J. I seem to recall many, many posts of congratulations after the
last W.C's when Team USA featured strongly. Strangely quiet this time
around. Seems it was a hard fought contest, with many tales of woe, and if
only's, but an excellent result all round. In Australia, we do not have an
F3J competition round, so the result is even more satisfying. Congrats to
David Hobby, the new Australian World Champion, and the entire team and
supporters. Well done.

2004-02-13 Thread Klaus Weiss
Bob.
not true at all. We have guys retrieve the chutes, whilst the heat
(round) is in the air. When their flight task is finished, the chutes are
already back for the next slot. We probably fly a different format to you
guys. If we have 40 pilots, for instance, we have 4 heats of 10 per round,
and each groups scores are normalised. M.O.M. I think you call it :)

Also means they get less launches, walking for the chute means less air
time, how do you want to spend your time flying, walking for a chute or
 flying?

Re: [RCSE] Number 11 blades

2003-12-12 Thread Klaus Weiss
You guys are a hoot. How can there be s much debate about a cheap
modelling item? Most people these days buy ARF or RTF models, anyhow.
Obsidian flakes, ceramic blades, zirconia injector blades, razor blades #11
blades, snap off blades, whewww! I just rough cut my blasa HLG with a
machete and use my wifes filleting knife and vegetable grater to get the
final shape. Even here in Aus, where we pay double your cost for RC gear,
modellers are not so tight that they want to get 12 months use out of a
single #11 blade. If it gets dull, toss it and replace it with a new one.

if you look at the HSL web page under the 'For Sale' section, you

I spoke to Arend about getting his pulleys, which were very good, but he
no
longer makes them. I also tried Tom at F3X, and he no longer carries
them. Seems to me that there is a market there for someone out there to
make these pulleys. If someone had a practical design so that we could
make our own pulleys, that would work for me.

Re: [RCSE] CD SKEG PRE-NOTIFICATION

2003-01-22 Thread Klaus Weiss
I have often commented, lightheartedly, on the use of skegs. We do not use
skegs at all, in Australia. I have yet to see someone injured by a model
sliding through the spot on landing. Admittedly, we use FAI landing spots,
but even so!! If a model touches someone on landing, then it is zero landing
points. Perhaps skegs have their place in the USA formats, but I think that
there is a risk of pilots becoming so dependant on them for landing, that
they forget how to land well. I haven't seen a U.S. TD contest. Perhaps
there are models flying all over the place in the landing zone. Landing
upwind, downwind, crosswind, vertically, inverted??? Don't know. Maybe skegs
are necessary :) Maybe the landing zone is really the hazard zone.

Klaus K Weiss
Sydney, Australia
www.hsl.org.au
- Original Message -
From: Harley Michaelis [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I suspect some flyers would decline to attend if not allowed to use
devices
they consider necessary to prevent sliding through the landing area and
causing injury or damage. I'd be one.

Sure, it would be great if we could always slow down enough to hit the
target and stay put without arrestors of some kind, but even the very
experienced among us can expertly screw up landings, too.
The only persons who are supposed to be in a
given landing zone is a timer and a flyer.

Go north a bit to
