[RCSE] American support/F3J trip to Turkey

  American support

I as well as the USA team have been overwhelmed with all your support. Both you
guys that invested in the team wares as well as the manufactures who donated
soaring goods to the raffle.

Some interesting first time team reflections as I awaited my name to be called
to fly. I was never nervous at all... The years and years of practice
prepared me for what I needed to do. But as my name was called to fly, a
certain feeling of pride came over me that I never felt before I knew that
I wasnt flying my flights just for me and the USA team of seniors, but I was
flying for you guys too The good old U.S. of A. That feeling was a bit
intense! I truly just tried to do my best and not do anything stupid!
Thanks again for supporting the TEAM,, Richard Burnoski

Well, the weather is looking challenging. We've had a fair amount of
rain in the area over the few weeks. Good idea to bring boots/shoes that
are water resistant. Field is likely to be soggy in spots.

Competition is always hot though - usual seeded man on man

Hope we see you this weekend.

Subject: [RCSE] What's the big deal about 2.4? Ask Don Quixote

The current 2.4 excitement is partly deserved and partly justified.

At the moment it gives rc pilots a new freedom...it has taken frequency
consideration and a need for its administration, concern out of the equation of
rc soaring...in a way its like there isn't radio waves being used as part of
our hobbyits as though we are preparing a free flight airplane, there isn't
any thinking about 'channels'.

That freedom means that our minds to can shift to other components of the
flight when we come to the field...and preparing the flightthe absence of
radio. We still have controls to fool with but that's where it stops.

Having said that, 72 has worked safely, does work safely and will continue
to work safely. Arguments could be made that if anything it will be even safer
and easier to use, with the drop in its population of users. Sure the doomsday
guy will throw out the possibility that channel-consideration by pilots will be
come lax ...making 72 a dangerous gamble. Clothespins and freq boards will
come to disrepair and with it the discipline we all learned to respect as
gospel on the field. Possible, but not realistic.

I highlighted at the moment because 2.4 is in its sailplane infancy, (
and actually the term 2.4 is only a nickname for these kind of systems because
they all currently share the same rf frequency right now there are at least two
kinds of systems using 2.4) we can't tell for sure what the future holds when
the 2.4 population expands course with the population of sailplane pilots
decreasing as our age increases:-(

What price that freedom? About $650 for the TX and one RX.

The sun beaming through the window awakened me early this morning. A
quick check on the computer confirmed that it was going to be another glorious
day. So it was off to Poway.

I stopped at the 7-11 and picked up some ice. I thought that if I stuck
my hands in the ice, I could get close to the feeling of flying in Louisville
or Chicago! It didn't work as the 77 degree temperature warmed my hands before
I could launch.

About three hours of air time in about 4 hours at the field with the
Supra, Rogue 2.0, Blaster and E Blaster. I only had a high start as the winch
motor is being refurbished, but the Supra and Rogue did not seem to care.
Thermals were plentiful with plenty of 10 minute flights and a few good
landings.

Another beautiful day in Southern California.

  And Gordy?

Joe,
AMA doesn't sit behind walls, but they know their bottom line and it is
tight these days. Let's face it, if you play, you know the cost, and that
being so, anything that defraes that cost is a bonus. The Jr's as well as
the Sr's will get lots of support from our community, and that is where it
is suppose to come.

[RCSE] Airfoil flight comparison( HN-216)?

[RCSE] Winter blues and USA F3J fundraising

2008-01-30 Thread Richard Burnoski
B !
Well by now most of you guys have your new contest killer plane , and possibly
have the radio installed already. Your probably looking on your shelves
pulling out last years broken stuff and glueing that back together for back up.
Here in beautiful Chicago , we almost broke an all time temperature change of
the temperature going from 50 degrees to minus 4 this morning.
I thought about going out to practice landings,,, umm, not really.
So, Id like to go to the South West Classic and see your smiling faces but the
upcoming year expenditures, plus pending plane purchases will probably allow me
a spring flying contest being F3J in the Rockies in Denver Memorial weekend.
The first time Ill see most of you soaring guys will be at the Toledo weak
signals show in Ohio, April 4-5-6. Barry Kennedy has allowed Jeffery Walters
and myself to be in his booth to sell raffle tickets and T shirts for the team.
( Thanks Barry).
I thought making the US Team was hard but this fundraising thing is equal the
challenge. We have 151 days left till leaving for the WC, and the team has a
net need figured around $30,000. Another fundraising problem is our fundraising
effort is cut a whole month shorter because the WC is a month earlier (late
June).
Thus, I have the winter blues thinking about it! I wish I could fly today to
remind me what this soaring thing is all about! I think you know what I mean!
That is why Soaring is so great, You can leave everything behind during a
flight or two. I could only dream about being in Punta Gorda with you guys last
weekend.

So We the Team have to rely heavily on your generous contributions thru the
Team website. I have come to be amazed at the cost of what it takes to send a
team to a place as far as Turkey! usf3jteam.com
If you have already contributed, thanks a million and good luck on the raffle!
And feel free to drop me an email to let me know that you did , or email with
any questions regarding preparing for flying in the WC.

Re: [RCSE] Icon 2

2007-12-20 Thread Richard Burnoski
I kinda disagree. Were not really launching on the same line everyones using
certainly by the end of a contest. Specifically after the first bunch
of launches, yes the winch frame and motor is the same constant but the lines
at big events tend to get trashed from abrasions. This happens especially when
were launching crosswind and downwind when its too costly of time to switch
winches into the wind. So, as a result, the bigger the plane the more
carefull you have to launch so as to not break the line from previous line
abuse.

Im letting a large contest secret out of the bag here in this statement, but I
generally fly a smaller area plane at big events when were using braided line
and were not able to check the line before a flight. So that way I know I can
take advantage of launch height when others cant push hard on the launch.
Plus, one by one I watch others with big planes break lines and take score
hits that drop them out of the running when in contest with no throw away
rounds.

Again, FAI events dont penalize your flight because of a broken line. The lines
are your own and you can use what you want in strength, and check and test
lines every flight if you wish. A broken line offers you a relaunch in a
working time window. Seems more fair. You want the outcome of the event to be
decided in the air afterall!

I'm sure this will be a very dynamic plane and competitive with the Euro
models. My concern is the launching equipment. With the current crop of
moldies, line breaks and winch bogging and ultimate failure are becoming more
prevelant. Heavy enough line for these new super ships, will be a burden for
the lighter planes. Yes, I've CD'd lots of contests and a few big ones.

We've tried some heavy line and it is great for the heavier planes but the
lighter planes and 2 meters have a helluva time overcoming the line drag and
weight.

Where do we draw the line?

OK all you sailplane junkies (Edgar, DP, you know who you are...) -
there's been a lot of discussion about the new High End and some vague
comparisons to the old Icon. Since Don has even stopped denying it, I thought
its about time for some news about the new Icon 2 that Maple Leaf Design is
developing. Its been in the works for over a year, and news has been leaking
for a while. Get in line folks - this is gonna be a biggy, both literally and
figuratively. Designed by the intrepid Dr. Mark Drela, this new high aspect
ratio F3J/Thermal Duration plane has a wing span of 150 (3.81 m) and a VERY
slender 2.4 friendly pod and carbon boom. I have had the privilege of fondling
the parts and pieces as the design was developed, and I can tell you that this
plane is way-cool. The first prototypes of the Icon 2 are being tested as I
type this, and the first production planes (mine - VBG) will be delivered just
after the first of the year. I understand there's already a list.

  No - I don't have photos or drawings.and leave Don alone - he's busy
working on my planes. Just get on the list.

I second that request. You can make it a flying contest instead of a

Did I hear that this Masters event will include a distance task and a speed
task? We have plenty of contest during the year where we just float around
for 10 minutes.

Have you put in your order for heavy winds and lots of sink?

All,

Since LJ brought it up please mark your calendar for Sept 18-21, 2008 for
the 2nd World Soaring Masters. It is on the official IAC calendar.

http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/nats/Calendar/wc092008.htm
Setup/practice day is the 18th and the MOM starts on Friday morning.
Sunday morning wraps up the MOM with the fly-offs for the cash beginning
around lunch time.

We are still in the early planning stages for the '08 event, but in
addition to the top spot payouts Horizon Hobby will be offering a mid-pack
fly-off for Big $'s (amount TBD).

So get ready because this will be bigger then the '06 event.

DVDe's,
JD

JoJo,
My friend, you know We always look forward to flying with you. But, before
you commit for the Nationals, Why not consider waiting until September for
the Masters Tournament. Then if you have time to take the long way home,
come hang out at my place in Southern California. Merry Christmas to you
and Fred, Hilsen Larry
Wow stop the press. What way is Norway again? West-downunder or ontop? If
I

go straight line it might happen in 8 hours I think...
This year the schedule is perfect for me since it is not at WC time...
And finally I am on the same frequencies

Again this Nat's thing is being held in the MID-WEST!!! Gosh Dernnit
I ain't gonna fly it until it's on the west coast. You know some of the
best flyers are on the west coast so it really isn't a true National
Championship unless it's on the west coast.

Wait.. I live 3 hrs from the Nat's...

Please disregard my previous statement.
