[RCSE] Passing

2008-07-18 Thread clarence

It is sad to tell everyone that Bob Harman has passed on today.
For those who remember Bob he was the one who came up with the BAT winch
and other various items for R/C soaring,
Bob Harman was one of the founders of the event that we all now know as
Soar Utah, it was his dream to bring everyone to the slopes here in Utah

and share some of the best inland slope soaring to be found.
I know I will miss Bob for he was a great friend and mentor to Me and
others, Bob taught me how to fly and build and most of all how to put
all the

sticks back together again so I could fly another day.

Thanks for the time all I just felt some of you would want to know.

Well Guys here it is the established schedule for Soar Utah. We have
pilots from all over the US as well as Canada. We hope you can make it.

Day 1, September 1, 2006 (Friday)
Butterfield Canyon is situated on the mountain peak above the Kennecott
Copper mine which provides an outstanding panoramic view of the mine as
well as views of the surrounding countryside. This is a 360-degree
flying site for both slope and thermal flying. The terraced pit is a
half-mile deep, about two and one-half miles wide, and the working area
covers 1,900 acres; the mine's open pit is one of only a few man-made
objects that can be seen from space and the second largest man-made
excavation in the world! Elevation of the peak is approx. 8,900 feet.

NEW THIS YEAR: Aero Tow option. For anyone who may be interested in
watching or participating in an aero tow event, we'll have a couple of
tugs ready to haul up even the biggest models. With our tugs we can tow
anything from a hand-launch to 1/3 scale. (maps will be provided to all
registered pilots)

Day 2 3, September 2 3, 2006 (Saturday Sunday)
Point of the Mountain is where hang gliders as well as R/C pilots come
from around the world to experience the smooth air, predictable weather,
and consistent ridge soaring conditions. The morning wind normally blows
from the South, so most of the contest activities will be on the South
side. In the afternoon, the winds normally switch and blow from the
North, and we fly on the North launch. Both sites offer drive up
convenience (no hiking the hill for each flight).

Day 4, September 4, 2006 (Monday)
Fancis Peak is located directly East of the Kaysville I-15 exit and is a
popular flying destination for every Soar Utah. The rewards are not only
the birds-eye panoramic view of the Great Salt Lake and Morgan County
but with an elevation of 9,600 feet it allows for many types of flying

Re: Re: [RCSE] Re: Rudder Stalls and turns.

2006-08-01 Thread clarence
The thing I found using one stick is that you can feed in an input that
would cut your performance, like a touch of down when you are wanting to
give it rudder.
The big thing you need to do is find out if two or one stick is better
for you for control, I ended up going to two sticks and found that with
practice I could fly smoother when the conditions are light.
But I also fly with a Stylus and most computer radios will let you have
it linked up on the Rud/Ale mix so if I hand the radio to some one I can
make it a single stick for them and still keep my method of madness

Jay Hunter wrote:

Chris,

That is VERY enlightening. I had just discovered I needed my elevator

I fly the aileron ships I will move it to the left side.

Thanks again..

Hi Jay,

I have been flying my Photon 1 in the IHLGF for 4 years. I have a

Watson tailgroup on it (Spyderfoam/FG) which is close to the type
the Photon II has. I use alot of rudder throw and use the rudder
for tight thermals, as well as using it for drag breaking and
stalling. You have to use the rudder in many ways, in order to
get down fast, especially close to the ground. Rudders may not
stall themselves but they DO STALL THE PLANE. You can go to the
Drela sites and read about how tail surfaces stall. Here are my
observation and use.

1) I use ALOT of rudder throw. My desire is to up end the wing
ASAP if I want to core a tight thermal.
2) I use Exponential on my Rudder, mainly to create the ability

to put in minor changes when first moving the stick, and major
throws on the extremes.
3) If I need to use it, especially at high altitudes, I have my
dual rates set up to be 40-50% fo my normal throws. I use this
when I need to fly smoothly high, as well as letting some others
fly the plane.
4) Rudders do stall. However, if you are experincing Rudder
stalls from level flight, then your CG is back to far. Basically,
you need to increase your glide speed slightly, as you are right
at the point where any drag slows the entire wing down and it
stalls. Be aware, that your slowest glidespeed may not be your
best L/D speed. Often you need to add down elevator to speed the
plane up then initiate the turn.
5) When flying rudder/Elevator, you do need to add up elevator in
your turns. You will find that once you initiate a bank, only the
elevator is required. The rudder is then only used to keep the
plane in the bank when required, and level when it attempts to
tuck in tighter in the turn.
6) I use rudder as a Spoiler/Brake all the time. There are 2
methods.
7) Method 1: If you oscillate your rudder fast, the plane does
not respond, BUT the rudder acts as drag and brakes the airplane.
It is like a swing/pendulum/harmonic thing. Try it when you are

close to the ground apparoaching for a catch. Basically a rudder
drag brake.
8) Method 2: If you move the rudders slowly, you can get a wings
oscillation set up. Big Throws make is so you can respond to
making the plane turn back fast. Doing this, you can essentially
induced a s-turn and after 3 turns, like right, left, right, the
wing tips will stall and you can getthe plane to drop 10 feet or so.
9) There are methods to do elevator stalls coming in. You pull
upp elevator up to a stall, let the nose drop, then pull up for a
stall, but just as it peaks give down to level the plane then pull
full up, which essentially mushes the wing in a flying level stall
and the plane drops vertically while still flying.
All these methods do require practice. Bill Watson often said
that for R/E ships 1 ft = 1 sec of flight time, so you can
basically gauge how high you need to be to make a time.
10) While most now do not do it, I like to fly a gyro on a poly
ship. I tune down the gyro so that the rudder does ge affected
when thermaling. Try to tune it down as low as possible as
required for the throw, but so it does not affect thermal turns.
11) My Rudders are fairly thick, and the LEs blunted. the Drella
sites will talk about airfoil deadband, as well as stalling.
12) As for the Rudder stick, are you right handed or left handed.
As a right handed person I have flown with R/E on the right

stick. This is like most.

I have been flying R/E HLGs for a very long time and basically

those who fly aileron ships never realize the handicaps R/E ships
have. Sometimes I ask a aileron flyer to try a R/E ship because
it does require a blend of R/E that shows a aileron pilot

I notice that Airtronics sells Rx/Tx crystal sets for aircraft frequencies.
Does this mean that I can just swap the crystal in my module to get the

Would I need to send the module in to be tuned?

The Shopatron online store will let me order a module, but it doesn't have

you also have to buy the crystal separately?

Anybody know about this?

I use a Rainbow vacuum in my shop. the advantage of the rainbow is all the
air and dust must go through a water bath for filtration before the air
comes back out for you to breath. A regular shop vac and house vac uses a
paper filter or baggless system for filtration so it lets allot of dust back
out for you to breath. If you would like me to tell you more contact me
offline and I will tell you more about how it works...it works because wet

I realize this is not a medical forum, however, I suspect that others of
you
have had some experience with reactions to balsa dust.

I seem to have developed quite a sensitivity to balsa dust. With just a
small exposure it triggers asthma like symptoms including a nagging cough,
wheezing, a tightness in my chest and sometime dizziness or severe cold
like
symptoms.

I wonder if others have had a similar experience and what they are doing
so
that they can continue working with balsa without becoming ill.

I know that a good quality dust mask will be a must. I have seldom worn
on
in the past but I can see that I will need to now.

[RCSE] Contests 2 M class

2005-02-11 Thread Clarence Ashcraft

As I read the various post's about contests and
two meter class. I sit and scratch My head and wonder why did some of you
get into this hobby. With all the bitching being done here about two meter
class it would make someone feel that you only care about what you
fly.
And You wonder why it is hard to bring new people
into a hobby that We all love to be in.
what We as a group need to be doing is look for
ways to improve this hobby so all can feel welcome as they start there journey
towards gettingmore skills and a better plane.

Most people getting into this hobby have limited
fundsand that means that the new people fly what they have. I have
taught a few people to fly and I try to keep that person from focusing on the
high dollar ships at first in hopes that they will get enough good flights in to
get them through the bad times of repairs
etc.
I personally don't care what you fly andyes
I have a Hera but I have a bunch of other ships that I love to fly, For me it's
about the time I get to fly. As for two meter yes it has a performance
difference but don't count it out of a contest or event because of it's
size.
A good example of this is My scratch built mini
bird of time during Soar Utah 2004, Mark Howard got his eight hour LSF and I got
My 4 hour LSF slope with my 2 meter bird of time. Yes it was hard at times
for me to keep My eye on a small bird for four hours but I did
it.

Well that's enough typing on the computer for me I
just hope some of you will think back to the time when a 2 meter bird was all
you had and how much fun it was...Clarence

Just got done with a Bubble Dancer and flew it at the Southwest Classic...I
love to build and building from mostly scratch is the way that I like to
build. and the best part is that I see something that I like I research it

forced out by the money grubbers. but I can feel confident that so far that
the lawyers have not found a way to remove my building knowledge. So if a
Lawyer can stop me from building a design of vintage, etc I would like to see
it.

PLEASE, if you are thinking about coming, DON'T. As it stands right now,
if
there are enough no-shows (say 18 to 25), I stand a pretty good chance of
getting a top 10 finish!!

Gas prices are pretty high, the weather in Phoenix can be touch and go in
February (will it be 72 or 74 today??), and really, it's just another
silly
contest. I strongly urge ALL of you to stay home with your families. Enjoy
some quality time. Bond with the kids. Mow the lawn. For me, the less the

Of course, I will place an old Irish curse upon you and your house for
doing
so. And will certainly NOT share any of my beer with you. But at least you
cannot say I did not warn you!!!

I mean it's just another one of those boring, Launch, Fly, Land things.

Hey Guys:
I have seen plans for sale on Ebay that at best, are just enlarged copies.
These
plans come from MAN, MB, MA, FM, RCM. Some were on two pages in the mag
and the
seller printed them out as one sheet. I would ask that none of use support
someone who just enlarges a set of plans and the sells them as his own. I
strongly suspect that he does not give a royality to the orginal designer.
Any
thoughts?
Or am I living in a very old fashion virtual world?
regards,
Jim
PS: Are the editors of RCM, MAN, etc aware of this practice?
PPS: I can give anyone on this list the name privately - but just do an
Ebay
search for model airplane plans. His name will be everywhere. His page
proudly
announces what (little) he does. I think from what I 've seen the names of
the
original designer, etc are still Proudly displayed on the copies!?

Subject: RE: [RCSE] Escape Tip Aileron Mod
Hello
During the preparation for the 2004 F3J World Champs
I purchased 3 Escapes.
Initially the wings were set up with the tip aileron
servos, but after some
experimenting, all my Escapes have the outer aileron
fixed. There was just
no perceivable difference in performance.
I firmly believe that competition thermal models
must be simple, easy to
maintain and robust. The last problem you need is a
unserviceable model in
a competition when there are plenty of other issues
to concern ones self
with. 2 extra servos (especially small servos with
fragile gears) are just
not worth the hassle.
The best way to become better in competition is to
become comfortable with
the flying qualities of your chosen model and
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
Chasing the ultimate model will only give small
gains. Most of the current
breed of competition models may have a performance
difference of, lets say,
3% between the worst and best. This difference can
easily be narrowed with
one or two stalls during a flight.

I have been flying Escapes for several years now and
have V-tail, X-tail
and electric versions. The Escape certainly is one
of the top F3J and
unlimited models available today and the quality is
second to none. The tip
ailerons are a bit of a complication with advanced
programming required and
a little extra weight out on the wing tips. About a
year ago I began
experimenting flying the models with the tip
ailerons disabled. Careful
analysis revealed the tip ailerons really weren't
doing that much. Roll
response in the landing configuration was a little
better with the tip
ailerons activated but that could

[RCSE] Let the games begin

2002-02-04 Thread Clarence Ashcraft

Yes we have the Black Helicopters we see them traveling all over the valley all day and night and we also have 5,000 plus national guard patrolling the streets around the venues and the guns they are packing are not toys. Then to make things more interesting we have 15,000 police officers from all over the US. and the latest addition will be another 5,000 officers because George Bush wants to come to opening ceremonies. so if any one would like to come and fly in this airspace you are welcome to come. in fact I will loan you a high-start to get your plane in the air. then i can sit and watch your plane hit the ground as you are busy dropping your transmitter because they wont let you bring your plane in for a soft landing.

2002-02-03 Thread Clarence Ashcraft

Hi All
some of you might think the ban is on just R/C well it's not. it also includes all hang gliders and para gliders. it is not something that we like to obey but it is a small price to pay by staying grounded when asked to. if we refuse to do this our goverment could be a real pain by making new regulations that could take away our r/c enjoyment. we don't want that.our club flying field is behind the speed skating oval and our club has been allowed by salt lake county to use this facilty at no cost to our club. so the ban on flying might be hard to take right now. but to get another field with mowed grass for free is hard to find. sometimes you have to give and it's one of those times. The original statement about the ban was regarding Park flyers and people

who may be flying them. Many of which may not be informed about AMA. Are

they in the know about a 52 mile ban on R/C flying? Does anyone think that

there will not be an R/C aircraft flying within that 52 mile radius during

the games?

For more information on the flying ban, go to the AMA site,

http://www.modelaircraft.org . Read what it says about the ban of radio

controlled models and rockets and then decide for yourself whether or not

it

  is prudent to fly.

Being a responsible American and respectful of others, I wouldn't even

consider flying in or near the no-fly zone.
