thx Gordy for keep us updated. I just built one of those Orca's and was pretty impressed with the kit. Weather said,, Sunny by 10am, it got sunny about 1:30 for an hour, other wize it was dark over cast with almost no wind and chilly as in sweatshirt, hoodie chillycold finger chilly. That made the ground really greasy under the grass landing boxes...and since the wind was completely directed by thermals, often the landings were downwind..and hot. Most of us slid out of great landing points. A whacky German (great guy!) is killing us in the LZ (Andreas Kuntz) who is visiting with a V tail Orca, consistently drops its nose in the LZ for pointsbut its Larry Jolly flying a 2.4 Perfect and has the best caller timer on the field who's leading us all in Unlimited. Funny how in the old days, it was Unlimited that got all the attention and the other classes got a polite mention ,but with AVAs and Topazi's, RES is just as hard fought. Joe Nave is in the zone leading us all there...I'm begging along in 7th place with about 40 ish points between us. LJ's in their too, Jason George (top Visalia Landing Judge) is in the top 5 in RES and Unlimited! Speaking of Landing Judges, Mark Russell is flying a Supra and also doing fantastic! Top 15 pretty much by grabbing 5 landing points here and 5 there, while the rest of us a slip-sliding away. Sorry I don't have the score sheets, the BBQ was SO good this year that we all sat around eating and it got dark, before I had a chance to look at the scores. I came to fly WOODY this yearI never owned one, or leaned to fly one but I came with a custom made MM GliderTech Marauder this year and I have to tell you...WOW! What a sailplane...Launches like a moldie, covers air like an F3B ship, reacts to rudder as if it has ailerons and lands like its on railsthe only shortcoming is the goofy rubber tooth old school skeg strip...it just loads up with mud and then slides thru the zoneI'd have pretty close to perfect rounds had it stopped where I put it 4 or so times! The general attitude is excellent, the winches are working great, plenty of power and lines are doing fine too. 600' to the turn around gives every one a good start. Chico and Skip are keeping admin and launch areas moving and organized. One pop off allowed but almost not needed. The air has been fantastic, but having said that I had a close call on one flight and others made the wrong decision only to find some serious down. Jack Strothers has been doing pretty good, a little rusty on his landings, but has been a fantastic timer/caller for some of my best roundsI have had a lot of good guys timing for me today. With the drizzle yesterday, and the cool over cast today, its still been one of the most fun contests I have ever attended. Mike Smith is up there ahead of me and Daryl so don't count him out of the game! Still three rounds tomorrow...and for sure its I think that the top 10 Unlimited are separated by about 30 points, and the RES top ten by about 45ish. I've been pretty consistent in Woody and that Marauder has been really suited to this kind of air...hopefully it will hang in their for me tomorrow. Everyone wants to know how much it weigh and I really don't know but as I carried it across a mud puddle today, they had to get a tow truck to get me out cuz I sunk in so deep. It has a removable tail group, with two 3/16 x 3 steel bolts holding them on, and it has 4 Sub C cells in the nose plus some lead to get it even close to less than 50% CG! Of course that's part of the landing sliding problem I have been having (couldn't be my crappy energy management!). I started the day with a 35 (max landing) with my WHCSL, and that's a 3 diameter paint spot, and ended it with anotherthat turned into a shed part zero :-( I had torn my wing tape on the previous flight and didn't bother replacing it. When I pegged the spot, it had some spin energy and I hit hard, that cause the tip to fly off ! Oh what could have been had I posted those 35 points! Too many really good flights and pilots to mention but everyone is having a ball. More maybe tomorrow! Gordy -- Delicious ideas to please the pickiest eaters. Watch the video on AOL Living.

sounds like a great day with your son mother nature, glad to hear it Tony. (don't get any better then that!) we've been getting a ton of lake effect snow here in SW Mich., getting alot of snowshoeing in, and loving it. seems we would get 12'' to 18'' of snow, then it melts off completely then we get another 16'' or so. it has done that three times in a row now just in the last few weeks. if it wouldn't have melted off , i don't think i would be able to open the door to get outside. :-) Dave Hauch www.rc-builds.com - Original Message - From: tony estep To: Soaring@airage.com Sent: Friday, February 01, 2008 1:21 PM Subject: [RCSE] Almost as good as flying No flying here today -- it snowed 8 last night. Re: [RCSE] Launching Sanity
I've always heard that it's not good to stall your winch motor, that it's hard on the motor. Is this going to happen even more so if you detune the winches ? Just curious, and wondering if that would be a new issue for you guys to have to deal with then. Dave Hauch www.rc-builds.com - Original Message - From: Martin Usher [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Soaring Exchange soaring@airage.com Sent: Saturday, December 22, 2007 2:35 PM Subject: Re: [RCSE] Launching Sanity That resistor rod is a really good idea -- simple, effective and robust. A lot of the discussion about launching has been the effect on the line but that's the least of our problems. We've put stronger line on our winches -- we're at 270lb test at the moment -- but all that's done for us is that the motors and other mechanical components are now breaking up. This is starting to get expensive, and for what? So a handful of people can launch planes a little higher than they might otherwise be able to do, planes that are supposed to be high performance sailplanes that have a low enough sink rate that they should be able to cruise around for many minutes while their owners look for lift. (They should maybe try flying a plane that's a little more challenging -- 2 meter or an Easy Glider, something that demands you get everything right or you're on the ground. Those big moldies are way too easy to fly.) Martin Usher RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Re:line breaks
With all due respect I disagree Jeff. Brian Smith --- Charlie less drum diameter will lead to more line breaks. Since you have more torque you can now crank more turns in and break the line easier. -- Jeff Steifel --- I agree with you to Brian. i disagree with the larger drum dia. for a standard winch. on a f3b winch yes, i agree. the standard winch has so much power. say you started with a 3'' dia. that thing will pull line in so fast and load a plane up instantly without stalling the winch, it just keeps pulling alot of line in FAST. as your tapping the pedal you can see your plane pulsing. go down to say a 1'' dia. it's not going to pull the line in so fast. much easier to control your plane with the pedal. Jeff, just trying to make a point, and your missing it. forgot what the exact size drum is. a bigger drum dia. Re: [RCSE] Re:line breaks
hi jeff, we could be getting different performance in our launch systems, so we could be getting totally different results. my fault for mentioning a 1'' drum, that was poor example to start with. i have a very powerful winch, and my turnaround is over 3' off the ground, and my fields are flat. you'll have a hard time stalling my winch even with a 3'' drum. it will really rip the line in with a big drum. so i'm sure your right about your stuff, and sorry to go back forth with you on this trying to make my point. i wish i could get out and break a line this time of year. :-) Dave Hauch www.rc-builds.com - Original Message - From: Jeff Steifel [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Charlie [EMAIL PROTECTED]; soaring@airage.com Sent: Friday, December 21, 2007 11:41 AM Subject: Re: [RCSE] Re:line breaks 1 is the extereme, you won't get the plane moving fast enough. 1.5 is extreme too. 1.75 seems better. There are a lot of reasons to chose something other than the ships that are most proven and popluar, cost being one but in fact the cost is a few lawn mowings or driveway shovelings extra cash away from each other. The number one reason to get something other than the 'bench mark' ship? Because you want to try something else...it makes the hobby that much more fun for you. Second best reason...because IF you enter a contest flying the same ship as the majorityyou are left with one less excuse for not having done as well as they all did. Flying the same design as the group can make Man On Man more about the pilot. Maybe takes a little more guts :-) Third Reason...because you still believe that a certain model's foil or weight or span offers some advantage that will tip the time or landing points your way over the other poor saps stuck with that that 'bench mark' sailplane. Re: [RCSE] F3B (team)
Yeap, that make good sense Mike, and i agree. I guess maybe my point is, f3b seems to give the feeling you need lots of people, spend a ton on equipment and you need specialty planes, which you're going to end up breaking. At least that's what i always perceived. And thats not true, i fly it by myself all the time, and may never compete. there is so much there to challenge me and thats what i love about. It's the perfect task for me or a pilot to fly by yourself. really didn't spend that much for the equiptment, which will last me forever, and used the same plane all year, and it still looks like new. plus i never have to dork in a landing to get good. :-) dh That's up to you to choose how to fly and how much input your team provides. Yes, we all use input from our team members, but we're still the pilot in command of the aircraft and have the ultimate decision on what to do. Most TD pilots always have a team. Ever notice how many guys always have the same timers/callers. That's because you've worked together and know what the other guy wants and needs. Nothing is more distracting than having your timer argue with you that you should be counting down on landing approach if you happened to like actual flight times. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i have to disagree with all you f3b guys about doing it as a team. i fully understand and agree that you will probably place higher with a good team. and if your trying to get on the USA team, its essential. so you don't have to tell me all the advantages, I KNOW! but there's one thing i can't stand, is someone else telling me which way to turn, or how to fly my airplane. Re: [RCSE] F3B
hi, looks like your getting info on the tasks. there's a miss understanding that you need alot of people to fly f3b. yes, to run a contest maybe, but if you want to just learn and looking for a new challenge you can do it by your self, but two's best. me and my girl friend do it all the time, i better re-phrase that. :-) i have a horn mounted in my winch trailer, we run a wire off a spool (which as a button to activate the horn) out to the correct distanceto base B. we both have a sighting device. i drop into the course at my end and hit the stop watch on my TX, she hits the button and sounds the horn when i cross Base B. Works great with just two people. (but still dreaming of that three some) :-) i fly by myself all the time and needed something to challenge me. f3b was just the ticket. I got in 384 speed runs last year in just a few months along with the doing the Distance Task, and had a blast and learned a ton. did it all with a X-21 sailplane, and just a few rolls of mono. i was pretty pumped after my first 16 second speedrun with the X-21 and running 29 laps in distance witha Tragi 701. sorta my Level 4. after running the Speed course for awhile with someone at base B. i did alot of Speed practice runs with no one at base B. there's still alot to work onyou can do buy your self. i can still cut Base B closer then my own Base. no, you don't have to change rolls aftera few flights for (practice). I get100 to 150 launches from a roll. There are so many variables in Distance, would be a blast if i would of had some other other pilots to fly it with. you can do this with most any of these planes now a days. if you ever want to try it Harry, come on down, i havetwo f3b winchs, tons of mono, and a girl at Base B for you. or call if you want more info. Re: [RCSE] Re: Winch motor timing
Just to make it very clear, what Rob means by "INTO the direction of shaft rotation" is "OPPOSITE the direction of shaft rotation", both statements meaning the opposite of "IN the direction ofshaft rotation" (which retards timing)- this was suppose to make it clear! totally lost now. :-) (i'll just leave mine alone.) dh bubbaspeak can be very subtle!. I was advised back when that 6 -8 degrees advance was about right, YMMV. On no account do you want to retard timing, the current goes upa lot. [RCSE] f3b Europhia 2
couple of things on this plane I never seen on planes, they routed the antenna wire from the factory down the fuse and up and out the fin, just had to solder my RX in, nice! there's a rib next to each servo bay connecting top and bottom skins. stab sits high on fin, whatever they use for a bell crank it only takes a short servo horn to get long throws. mine are to long as seen in pics. details and pics; http://www.git-r-built.com/newsmgr/templates/grbNews.asp?articleid=34zoneid=1 now for the flying; I got in around 15 launch's with mine today, I LOVE IT!! one word, PRECISE! it's the most precise plane I've ever flown. these where first flights too. also response to camber better then any plane I've flown. I pulled a ton of camber, up elevator, and spun it on a wing tip, trying to tip stall it and couldn't. I can't believe how tight a thermal turn it will make, thought I needed big polyhedralto do this. :-) launch's, I've never seen a planezoom this high of my standard winch, I can't wait to get it on mono, it's going to be crazy. not a hint of flex anywhere on launch. asfar as speed, I never ballast it up, but diving and racing it around empty, it's faster then anything I've flown. this was all with the 7.5 joiner. looks like a hlg in the sky with those flat wings. also when I got racing around, felt like I was flying my 60'' composite Vindicator sloper, it response! Yeah, i like it, alot! (just thought i would share.) Dave Hauchwww.git-r-built.com

Re: [RCSE] Antenna Placement - Range Check Becker
i used to play around with ground range checking, moving my antenna to different locations and using different RX's, and getting more then good results for what they called for as far as how many steps you should be able to get with your antenna collapsed on your TX. Then i got a glitch/battery monitor from Sheldon at, [EMAIL PROTECTED] and was able to check things in real time flying and those great ground checks wheren't even close to being acceptable. but using the glitch monitor i could get the right combo for my package, which are gitch free now. Re: [RCSE] mounting rods in Supra
first, Dave Corvan, how come all your post have a attachment with them ? just thought i would let you know. this plane is not going to use a ballast tube, customer didn't want one on this plane. Dave, how are you supporting your rods in the fuse then ? Also, how did you make your ballast tube removable ? thx dh Dave Corven replied; Hi Dave, your internal pushrod install is more complicated than mine and it looks as though you will have to shorten your ballast tube. My ballast tube extends into the boom about 5.5 inches and the only foam plug I used is just aft of the ballast tube and my system has no play and very free running. The only play is in the gear train in my new Volz digital servos. Byron Blakesly followed my instructions that I posted the first of January and has commented as to how well it worked. Also have been able to make my ballast tube removable so the tow hook and the wiring harness are accessable. I hope this helps future builds you may want to do. I just pick up a power planer ; http://www.greatplanes.com/accys/gpmr4030.html I wasn't really expecting much, but this thing works like a charm. Ed, I don't think its a shameless plug at all. The Davis is a great tool I have a Davis plane and use it quite often. There are areas where I use it. Its simply not as comfortable in my hand (I do a lot of regular woodworking) And I hone my Stanley sharper than the razor blades on the Davis which dull far faster. But I use both, side by side. the Davis is the backup. Plus it has angles, which I can't get with the STanley - designed for straight and flat. The Davis is more universal and less expensive. I've used one for years. I liked it so well that I now import them myself. I operate www.skykingrcproducts.com and have them listed on my web site. Now I know what you may be thinking. Set it on edge against a shooting block and you can square and true balsa, plywood, etc. Its designed to trim end grain for regular wood projects, but for modeling its small enough to cover a wider range of uses when working with the size of wood we use in building. Anyone one interested ? here's what I can do; *everything is made from aluminum and polished. *5/8'' solid aluminum base plate, with holes drilled under the drum area to lighten. *1 1/2'' solid end support plates. 13'' long x 1.5'' dia. drum, with 2.'' and 2.5'' clam shells that will attach with two screws per half into the 1.5'' drum. *starter motors come from World Wide Co. they are a big company so they will be consistent and easily replaceable if need be. *adjustable stand or frame. *foot pedal connectors. *solenoid will be bolted to the base plate. *no turn around. *no battery cables. sorry no pics until I build the first six. looks like they'll be around $1000- $1200. hopefully cheaper, but I won't go beyond the $1200. i'll have a solid price and pics after we do these first six. the first six will be cheapest. I'm open to any suggestions. Dave Hauch www.git-r-built.com RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] FS: new f3b winchs (info)
i had a winch made, it had removable drums that took no tools to remove drums. it worked great, but found out it was to costly to make. to much tooling. so that threw a monkey wrench into the project, i have pics and would of had a solid price. so we simplified going with the clam shells. Re: [RCSE] cross-country plane info
One BIG advantage to the Thermic is that it is not going just sit around all year. You can fly thermal and F3J and be competitive. Spot landing an SBXC is really tough. i think you hit it on the head Tom. i looked this plane over again, this thing is built like a brick! it has carbon sub spars, and even the aileron LD is carbon. finish on it is right up there with anything else, and better then most. the fuse is really stiff, even built in for db9. even comes withply servo frames cut out to fit your servo. these are the the same guys that build the Trinity, and thats one of the stiffest planes i've ever seen, beside a DS double carbon Exxtreme. dh i know next year is a cross country year at the Nats. and thought this might interest somebody. ijust got in a 4m Thermic XL, can be seen here. http://www.soaringusa.com/products/product.htm?product_id=16254category_id=293 I can't believe the quality of this molded plane that you get for $850. bucks! If you told me it was $1500. it still would be agood price. It's built really strong, has a great finish. I have heard from other owners that they do hang really well also. I even seen they have a ThermicXXXL 5m, http://www.valentamodel.cz/ Just thought i would pass this on. Dave Hauchwww.git-r-built.com

Hold on there David. While I agree that the Thermic XL is one the best deals going, it is NOT from the MFR of the Trinity. Jiri Baudis makes the Trinity, Valenta makes the Thermic.
