[RCSE] 8 hour task

2008-07-15 Thread soarx4
Johnny,
You are a class act that has supported the hobby and Midwest contest circuit
for as long as I have been around. You deserve this reward, and Butch would be
proud. Besides, getting your Level V is the only conceivable excuse for missing
the Fred last weekend. Mari even had chocolate sauce on hand Sunday!

[RCSE] Contest Announcement

2008-06-30 Thread soarx4
11 th Annual Fred Fredrickson Memorial Thermal Challenge
July 12 and 13, 2007
Ohio Valley Soaring Series for 2008.
We intend to make this a FLYING event, not a landing contest, hence the
following format:
On each day, the contest will be:
1. Four or more rounds of Thermal Duration, with our usual extended flight
tasks. The number of rounds will be dependant on the size of the flight group
and other factors.
2. Seeded Man-On-Man with normalized scoring within the group.
3. Flight groups will be launched under the control of a Launch Master.
4. Winch positions will be assigned for each flight group.
5. FAI (5 points per meter) landing tape bonus (added AFTER the
normalization like the Nats).
Please note the following departures from the AMA Rulebook:
1. No skags/skegs/meathooks or ANY type landing arrestors allowed on the
aircraft (there may be a hacksaw available at the field for skegs molded into
the nosecone). If you MUST fly with a skeg or built-in arrestor, your landing
score will be scored at 50% of the point value for being high maintenance.
2. The timer MAY countdown the last 10 seconds of the flight (you do
anyway, this makes it official).
3. Contestants are allowed ANY NUMBER of models for the contest and may
freely choose for each round.
4. No ‘real-time’ telemetry or thermal sniffers will be allowed.
Entry fee will be $25.00 per contestant for one day, or $35.00 per contestant
for both days. Your entry fee includes a provided lunch. Trophies/plaques will
be awarded through 5th place each day, with an Overall Champion award for both
days. First Place only to Best Sportsman each day.

The OVSS scores are in after this past weekends OVSS #8 the Fred Fredricson

2006-08-21 Thread soarx4
Butch was the most amazing and intellignet dog that was ever put on the face of
this earth. How else could you explain his ability to train 80+ soaring
pilots, noted for being the most independent bunch, to feed and scatch him at
his desire.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Johnny Berlin.

[RCSE] JR 368 BB Servos

2006-08-04 Thread soarx4
The ever-popular JR 368 servo now has a ball bearing cousin. I have a couple
of regular 368s that have enough slop so that they do not provide precise
centering and a sloppy control surface, but, JR says that they are within spec.

Does anyone know if the case for a 368 BB can be swapped for a regular 368?

I assume Horizon will the 368BB cases.

Here is an interesting site for searching PI for numerical strings, like a
birthday perhaps. For instance, February 6, 1956 when entered into the search
field as 02061956 will result in a report that the string was found 2,811,196
counting from the first digit after the decimal point. What could be more
gratifying that finding your birthday in such a fundamental number? :) It's a
 marvelous waste of time:)

[RCSE] Request for Donations

2005-07-14 Thread soarx4
The LSF Board of Directors, and the Contest Directors for the Soaring National
Competition, would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the vendors
who have generously donated merchandise for our Volunteer Workers Raffle. A
list of these vendors can be found on the LSF web site at silentflight.org. We
encourage all soaring pilots to patronize these people, and thank them for
their continued support of our hobby/sport.

To those suppliers of soaring related products who have yet to donate, please
read on. While the Soaring Nationals begin in Muncie, Indiana, July 22nd
through July 29th, 2005, there is still time to get your name added to the list
of donors.

The LSF / AMA R/C National Soaring Competition is basically operated by many
dedicated volunteer soaring people, with help the LSF officers competitors
(also volunteers) and the AMA staff. The volunteers are the people who make
the Nationals happen.

Each year at the Soaring Nationals Awards Banquet, held after the close of
competition, we hold a no fee raffle for the volunteer workers. It is our
attempt to reward the volunteers for their hard work and dedication in making
the Soaring Nationals a success throughout the week. Soaring and Hobby
vendors, just like you, donate the raffle prizes for this event.

To show our appreciation for each and every donation, the LSF will put a link
to your web site and advertise your company and its donation(s) on the LSF web
site located at the link above. As you might imagine, the LSF web site is a
busy place, with over 7800 members, as well as non-members, checking the site
for News, Events, and Membership information.

As further enticement to gain your support for the volunteer workers and the
LSF, we would like to offer you free table space in our vendor area. This will
allow you to display and sell your merchandise to sailplane pilots from across
the US and the world. Reserve your space buy contacting Mr. Ron Kukral at this
e-mail address, [EMAIL PROTECTED], or contacting me at the address below.

A number of people and companies who have donated great prizes in the past will
join us again this year. Please join them and help us by donating any R/C
Soaring related item(s) that you can.

I offer this letter of Thanks and acknowledgement in advance, for your donation
to the 2005 LSF / AMA R/C Soaring Nationals, Volunteers Workers Raffle.
Delivery and shipping can be to me at the address below at the Nationals Flying
site in Muncie, IN. Please e-mail me your Internet Copy, so that I can add you
to the List of Donors on the LSF web site.

Re: [RCSE] Plug-in wing wiring connectors: good, bad, ugly?

2005-03-01 Thread soarx4
I have used Hoopes wing connectors on all of my home-brew and store-bought
sailplanes for the last 7-8 years. At times I can get a bit careless when
trying to get in the air in a hurry, or pack up so I can have a few with
friends. The connectors a tough and reliable, and will take your abuse. They
have never let me, or any ICON flyer, down. Tom will custom make what you need
if you contact him at his web site. And yes this is a shameless plug. I have
just ordered a custom connector set for my new short wing span TD plane. (I
can't say 2M or I will take a ration of #$%^).

Good LIft
Ron Kukral
Soar Chicago

http://www.hoopesdesigns.com

I've got a couple of projects coming up with plug-in wings, and I'm
wondering if anyone would care to share their thoughts on using
automatic connectors to make the connection between the servo wiring in
the wing and the servo leads in the fuse. I'm thinking primariliy of the
DB-9 and Multiplex -style multipin connectors here. This would be for
larger (4m) scale and for a slope aerobatic (Voltij) application.

Obviously the downside would be the risk of a bad connection and/or
failed connection, but the upside would be convenience. Assuming the
connectors are mounted solidly enough, is there really that much of a
problem so long as you take reasonable care?

 Thanks,

 Steve

Re: [RCSE] A fun task for a Saturday night

2003-11-05 Thread SOARX4

I played that game before with the McCarthy's one day, I ended up
winning this with an ICON, full winch launch and zoom to landing in
17 seconds. We all had several attempts that were less than 20
seconds but had to end the contest when all the models had one or
both flap servos separated from their mounts... and that was not
 from the ground fellas! 8-)

Why not make this real interesting. Add 1 second to your time for every inch you are
off the 100 spot?

[RCSE] wish list

2002-04-07 Thread SOARX4

My flying buddies and I attended the Toledo Show on Friday. We met up with
Capt'n Jack and Jim Deck at the LSF booth (nice to see you up and around
Jim!) Karlton, Jim McCarthy (Jim Baggs) and lots of other great people
important to the soaring community. One of the interesting discussion I had
was with Skip Miller at the Airtronics booth. We talked about the new
servo's that Airtronics will be coming out with, and about programming the
Stylus to work with six servo wings and V-tails. I complained about the lack
ease to get V-tail differential and a six servo wing template in the Stylus,
and suggested that the Vision was a better radio for the new generation of
competitive TD ships.

After getting and ear full, Skip introduced me to Ron Koberg, President and
CEO of Airtronics. Ron appeared to be genuinely interested in meeting the
needs of the competitive sail plane flier (which I hope to be someday VBG).
Ron suggested that the soaring and radio user community get together and let
him know what we need from a radio. Ron gave me his card, and with his
blessing, said I could post his email address to both this exchange, and the
Radio Controlled Soaring Exchange [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Now we have an outlet for Gordy's Wish List. If enough of us take the time
to email Ron, maybe we can get some much needed upgrades to the Stylus Glider
Program. To make it easy, I will start the ball rolling with my wants/needs,
and address this email to The Airtronics Group, RCSE, and to Ron. All you
have to do is add your wishes to the list and forward it on to Ron.

Here's to a new, upgraded Glider Card,

Ron Kukral
SOAR Chicago

Wish List:

1. Six Servo Wing Template (just like he Vision)
2. Simplified V-tail differential adjustments (Vision Style)
3. Flying Wing Template (to fly the new 2 Meter Zagi that will be out soon).
4. (add your own and send it on to [EMAIL PROTECTED])
