[RCSE] Mid South Demise Highly Overrated err.. Premature

2008-03-12 Thread Rick Eckel

Guys,

I received the following information directly from AJ Wilson -
honorable CD of this year's Mid South Contest (I think he is anyway).

Please notice this is a nice site with convenient food and
lodging. The slight inconvenience in 2005 of having a no fly zone
over the kids playing soccer will not be a problem this year. Should
be a good time.

Rick

Hi Rick

Please let everyone know we will have the MSSC section of our website
active by end of month. Full details will be available then at
www.atlantasoaring.com

We plan on holding it at the same site we used in 2005, but will have
no soccer activity and a 100% open fly zone.

It will take place May 23rd - 25th.

Thanks
AJ

I haven't heard a peep out of Atlanta. Its almost mid-March with no
news so I wonder if there is going to be a contest this year. Don't
want to be too hard on the guys since I procrastinate as well as
anyone but we need some news. I'm working on plans as well. If
Mid-south is not going to be organized I'll want to use my pass to
get to some other nifty contest.

We had planned a trip to Nashville on the way to Tullahoma this year.

They post some great pictures of every place but their own field.

Hi Chuck,

Here's the MidSouth announcement, from the Atlanta club, I sent to the
NASF list last November. The soccer mom's are a non-issue, as covered
below.

Jon

This is to let everyone know that the 2008 MidSouth will be held
Memorial Day weekend, Friday May 23rd through Sunday May 25th.

We will hold it at the River Green site of our last MidSouth. This
year we will have a completely open fly zone since we have scheduled
around the soccer season.

An exiting addion to the 2008 MidSouth will be a group of California
and Northeast F3B pilots who are coming to town Monday May 19th. They
want to practice in conditions similar to what they will experience
during the next contest in Germany. Some, if not all, plan on
competing in the unlimited portion of the MidSouth.

They also plan to demonstrate speed and distance flights after finish
of the days events.

Effective January 1, 2005, the AMA rule ban on Skegs in RES has been
deleted. Skegs have always been allowed at the Mid South. I have never
flown in a contest that banned skegs in any class except for the Nats and
that includes Visalia, Phoenix, and the Tangerine. Skeg ban seems to be a
midwest invention. It certainly never came out of the South. :-)

I had the VLA altitude reporter in my new CARA 2M RES ship and recorded 450 meters on the last flight.  It took 7 minutes to get there, just in time to deploy full spoiler and descend for landing.  The VLA was very informative, but did not help a bit in the landing phase.  Paul and I both recorded a zero landing.  Paul definitely needs a VLA as his new AVA was just a speck on several flights (Estimated altitude of 600+ meters.

It took me way more time than I wanted to spend but I created a nice (I think)
page with all reports about IHLGF, please take a look if you have time to read
through them again and re-live your memories

I also posted pics from the Mid-South HLG golf, enjoy:

[RCSE] Mid South Hand Launch

2003-06-14 Thread Got2soar
I just got the list of pilots for the hand launch class at the Mid South for
Friday, June 27. We have 21 pilots entered with lots of talent in the entire
field. If anyone was thinking about entering but just didn't make the cut off
date I am sure I can fit you in as long as you get there before the pilots
meeting at 8:30. I may even be able to arrange an old beat up XP-3 for you to
fly if you don't have an airplane.

See ya there

Heck, they are all there now. Have fun. The files are big, but the
initial displays (thumbnails) are network friendly.

[RCSE] Mid-South

2002-06-24 Thread ewilson12000

The guys of NASF deserve a big hand for the fine job they did this
past weekend in hosting their first Mid-South. We could have done with
a little less wind but at least it did not rain. The food Saturday
night was fantastic.
A thank you goes out to the vendors for the donations to the contest.
Many people do not realize a contest of this size would be nearly
impossible without the donations.
Those of you that missed this weekend missed out on a good contest.

Congrads go out to Steve Siebenaler for his overall win for the
weekend. Steve had to fly and place well in four events to achieve
this win.

Now it is on to Louisville in 03

2001-06-26 Thread Herb Rindfleisch

Well I guess we can no longer call it the Mud South!
Ron finally came through with great weather on Sat.
and Sun. and we really couldn't ask for nicer!
Congrats to Ed Sleger for winning in Expert, also
congrats to Art Frost for winning Gray Cup! While I'm
at it, congrats should also go to a young man from
Nashville, James Brittin. He led for most of the
contest until the last round! If the thermal activity
had not changed during that last round on Sun., I
believe he would have cleaned our clocks! I am glad I
reached the age where I can fly in the Gray Cup, and I
won't have to compete against a young whippersnapper
with his ability, haha!

Thanks again to Ron Swinehart, all his helpers,
scorekeepers, impound personnel and to the winch
operators who sat in the sun both days!

Everyone should remember that the Mid South will be in
Atlanta next year and lets show the newcomers to the
contest circuit some good attendance! See y'all then
if not sooner!

Just Remember: THE TULLAHOMA TULIP LOVERS !!!

[RCSE] Mid-South '01

2001-06-25 Thread Mark and Jo Gellart

Well, got home about midnight last night and it was worth every effort to go
to Huntsville. The weather was wonderful, field good, and fellowship
outstanding. Many thanks go to the North Alabama guys for showing us all a
great time. A special thanks to my host and hostess Rob and Valita Glover
for a great stay in their home, I think Rob's dogs could qualify for
Lettermen except all that water would be on the floor.

The contest was a test and there was never a sure bet in the air. As Gordy
has stated, Jimmy Britton was at the top all the way to the end when it
overcasted over and ten was makeable by a few but in most cases not doable.
Oleg and Ed Slegers were always close the entire contest. The top five were
Ed, Oleg, Herb Rindfleish, Jimmy, and Scott Meador. Ron swinehart had a
special 13 minute round at the end of Saturday you could choose to fly to
replace a bad round, that really helped a few and some got the big slam.

And finally, even though my "Team Tone Deaf Pig Dogs-Can of Woop Arse"
looked like we needed to fly in a special needs flight group at times,
congrats go to the Tullahoma Tulip Lovers for winning the team trophies,
Herb, Brian Smith (who was second till a bad round Sunday), and Kendall
McDonald.

And final thanks to Steve Siebenaler for dragging down south and letting me
see that good southern hospitality, big thanks Steve!

Is the "Friday Practice Session" at the UAH campus still on? As I recall,
the usual "UAH sports complex practice field (NASF's normal flying site)" is
no longer in use since it is being bulldozed.

I'm looking for a driving partner and or room mate for the Mid South. If
you are going and live within a couple three hour from Raleigh or are coming
through, please contact me ASAP. I hate to have to drive the 10 hours
alone. I already have a room cheaper than the $67 show special. gv
