Watching the finals was worth the price off the addmission. Toughest contest I have ever seen. You couldn't escape a round where you weren't flying aginst one, two or three of the worlds best. Just look at the great pilots who didn't make the finals. Jerry Shape - Original Message - From: Marc Gellart [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Soaring Exchange soaring@airage.com Sent: Sunday, September 24, 2006 9:42 PM Subject: [RCSE] Soaring Masters-Wew! What a three days of flying this was, if you blew it off and did not come out you missed the toughest contest I have ever seen. Conditions ranged from just plain ugly, to beautiful, to some mix in between. As the good press agent Ben Wilson has portrayed, just being there to watch the finals was something. Yep, George, there was at least 6.5 minutes between Mike and Arrend in the six finals rounds, maybe more, that was probably one flight. the first two rounds were fairly close, but from there on the carnage started. This part of the contest was old home week for OVSS guys and it can be a spectator sport when you have the caliber of folks out there that we had in the finals. I was an official timer in the finals so got to watch it close and personnal. We owe a debt of thanks to Peter Goldsmith of JR Radio for having the inspiration and guys like Jim mcCarthy, Tom Kallevang, Lee Esenjoy, Barry Kennedy, Paul Naton (ask someone that was there about DVD's, they have an entire new meaning now), Joe Dirr the cook, Marna and Larry Jefferies, Robin and Ruth Meeks, Don Smith, the folks of RCSD, Horizon Hobby, Harry DeBoar, Carolyn Goldsmith, Jodi of Team JR, and others I forgot. Personnally, I had a good contest, but had a major brain fart at the start and had a 0 round to start (all I will say is do not have dyslexia with a dial up module, nuff said, and do not have a Futaba guy check it), from there I was average but got better as things went on and three 1000 rounds and a couple of near ones. Best flight of the whole thing was trying to out do a Supra, Mike Reagan's, at about 100' vs 150' respectivley working multiple impulses with a ballasted Tragi 705. Made it for a while but no matter how much I worked I could not make up the difference. Finally had to call it quits and come in to a 76/80 landing and watch him for another 2 1/2 minutes. Bill Malvey told me that thumping sound was Reagan grinding me into the ground, but I held my own for second in the group. Finshed 28th and started in 70th after the first round. I had a blast, first cigar in 27 years, found out Red Bull Margaritas are really good, even ate Sushi one night, a first. Met lots of guys I had corresponded with over the years but never had a face, Joe Nave, Lex Mirope, Randy McCleave, Gene Trevino, and got to see many friends I had not seen for a while, Mark Smith, Rusty, Bill Malvey (the futaba guy), John Erickson, Mike Lee, David Hobby, et. al. OK Jim from Valpo.. A couple of things: Your only wrong in one of your statements... do NASCAR fans become race drivers... and you said NO, Big Time Wrong Gong on that one...they become race car drivers on the city streets. Especially the young ones on the cell phone putting her make up on in the review mirror during 8:56 am drive time. The other thing... the rules of this event are: LSF Aspirants are eligible. In my opinion that leads to a reason for a woody class, where as in the previous years Masters, I believe only Level 3 or 4 qualified. My big hope here is some new, strong scratch woody designs show up that have legs and can launch hard. But that challenge has always been available at the NATS, so I'm not holding my breath for too many of them to show up, maybe one or two or three that I know of. Without a woody class and without NOS at AMA NATS. do you know where the most woody fun will be in 2006 ? Stay cool... Ray Hayes http://www.skybench.com Home of Wood Crafters - Original Message - From: Jim Deck [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: RCSE soaring@airage.com Sent: Saturday, December 31, 2005 3:30 PM Subject: [RCSE] Soaring Masters and Woodies First, kudos to JR and the LSF for getting an idea rolling whose time has definitely come. The rules look like a true soaring contest and conditions at Muncie will keep it from being a landing contest. A combination of the group that puts on the NATS and the group that puts on a really classy aerotow event should result in a winner. A premier event at a premier site, when Indiana weather is at its best - who could ask for anything more? Now, about the mild hue cry regarding woodies at this competition. As primarily a woody flier myself, my first thought was that I'd volunteer to help and not take a spot from a more qualified or deserving pilot. Then the discussion ensued here on RCSE and I started thinking. As I understand it, the objective of this event is to promote and display R/C soaring with a premier competition. OK, so does premier competition mean the best flyers competing with the most competitive sailplanes available to them? If so, then why not pare down the number of entries to a smaller number and fly more rounds? But, if the promote and display part of the objective is taken seriously, then a large variety of sailplanes should indeed be a part. Right now there are a variety of somewhat prestigious events in the other venues of model aviation that do indeed draw a lot of spectators. I'm not sure that a large number of spectators always assures a large number of newcomers drawn to the hobby. Do a significant number of NASCAR fans become race drivers? Only in their dreams or video games. So, my thought is that the nature of the event is definitely in the hands of the organizers. I'm sure that they monitor and thoughtfully consider thoughtful comments made in this forum. Therefore let us continue to reason together without rancor or sarcasm and not let this discussion run down ratholes like builders vs. non-builders, floaters vs. lawn darts, and lengthy diatribes about whether or not the highest placing woody should qualify as an LSF win.
