Manufacturers obviously don't plug their cards into Soekris boxes for
testing and benchmarking, so average speed in the lab (the 45 Mb/s
claim) is not what the average end user will ever see;). Still not bad,
the fastest I've seen a "slow" card do after a few local tests is 2.35
Mb/s.

However, in my experience, on an operational level it's the other
hardware that matters on a Soekris box. Switching from a net4521 to a
net4801, and later to a net5501, really made a difference (key
generation, SSH login time etc). CF card speed has played only a minor
role.

In properly built cameras they will. The CF speed is measured using
the CFA extension to the ATA command set, where erase operations are
done as soon as possible, so that writes are straight writes to the
flash array.

Search for "CFA ERASE SECTOR" for more details. I'm working on support
in FreeBSD.

[Soekris] net5501 and Linux ( Gentoo 2.6.23 )

2007-12-20 Thread Richard Homonnai
Hello :)

Yesterday I got my shiny new net5501. I would therefore like to pool some
facts and also some questions

* the disk led works
* using PATA as Primary and FLASH as Secondary works

* Error-LED doesn't work. Any help?
* Watchdog doesn't work. Any help?

Also, does this mean, I can only use UDMA/33 on my box?
"hda: host side 80-wire cable detection failed, limiting max speed to UDMA33"
Or should I try to override by using hdparm -X? Is a 80 pin cable available at
all? does it make sense?

Other than that, I am very happy, the migration from a net4801 went very
smoothly, at first I just had to compile VIA_RHINE into the kernel, and from
there on I could build a completely customized one. So if anyone wants to
migrate, don't forget this module or else you might make yourself some
unneccessary pain (kernel compile via serial or once again disassemble the
HDD from the Soekris). Other than that the kernel boots very nice.

If someone has some questions regarding migration or Gentoo on the net5501,
feel free to ask, but it would be nice if someone could help me out of my
issues as well *misses his hearbeat LED aswell as the confidence a WDT gave
him*

Greetings,
Richard H.

I can't speak for FreeBSD, but it works great for me on NetBSD. I boot
from CF, and use a larger USB disk for storage.

Re: [Soekris] Ubuntu Dabber / 5501 / Grub error 18 - back to FreeBSD

2007-12-20 Thread ervin
I had an idea Ubuntu as Desktop which is the best I have seen
and the Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (long term service - until 2011) server
so one distribution for all purposes / great.

My experience:

6:06 partitioner doesn't work on Soekris Debian did.
Debian as a NTP server held the offset time within 6000 - 1 msec / uhh

So back to square one and I re-installed the best and most stable
environment - FreeBSD on all my Soekris boxes - all done & it works!!

Kept Ubuntu as a desktop though

[Soekris] PXE Installation of OpenBSD 4.2 on Soekris 4801

2007-12-20 Thread Lars Noodén
I'm working with a new Soekris 4801 w/256MB RAM and wonder about getting
OpenBSD installed so that the system boots. Once I can get to SSH, I'm
home free.

Netboot using PXE and tfptd goes well: I've gotten things set up so I
can do the net boot + install and that whole installation procedure
appears to run flawlessly.

However, when I get to booting the installed system, things just appear
to hang. Here is the output from the serial connection just before that
happens:

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~lars/net4801.txt

Where can I find info about how OpenBSD needs to be configured
differently from your average tower/rack mounted system so as to boot
from CF with no HD?

Regards
-Lars

Doesn't look like you chose to set the default console to your serial
port. You'll need to re-install and make sure to choose that option
during setup.

at the boot> prompt, you need to use the following commands to enable
the serial terminal:

set tty com0
stty com0 19200

and in /etc/ttys, tty00 should look like this:

tty00 "/usr/libexec/getty std.19200" vt100 on secure

That's not necessary if sshd is running. The machine will boot fine, it
justs takes a while to calculate the ssh-keys at the first boot.
Wait a couple of minutes, ssh into the machine as root and put something
like this into your /etc/boot.conf:
stty com0 9600
set tty com0
