No magic, I have used both Chris Capuccio's FlashDist (for OpenBSD) and
the plain Debian installer to get a base system installed to a CF card.
Then I configure the SSH daemon. I do my management (for better or
worse) via SSH, and use the console for those times when the network is
inaccessible.

Unless there is an OS with a working network configuration and a ssh
daemon running on it you probably want to use the shell by the means of
the serial console. The magical bits in the BIOS do not include a full
blown TCP-Stack or ssh-server - yet. (And no, I haven't heard of any
project having this on the agenda ...)

There are in fact such magical setups (like the "ssh console" in
Debian-Installer), but these are rare and not something I'd be
likely to use, given access to a real serial console interface.

hmmm, for my soekrii (is that the plural?) I've never had to do too
much to get everything (well, everything I use anyway) working to my
satisfaction. I generally set the baud rate via an option like so:

$ screen /dev/tty.usbserial0 9600

I've never had to explicitly set the stop-bits or parity, it just
seemed to work. Of course, YMMV. I should probably disclose that I
mostly use the console for emergencies and system configuration. I do
most of the work via SSH, once the system is initially configured.

I believe Terminal.app on OS X grabs the PgUp/PgDn keys, or at least
my experience was that I needed to combine them with a meta-key of
some sort to pass them through my SSH session to the screen instance
on my shell server last time I used it (hyper-apple-cokebottle?).

I'm not in any way new to screen, but I wouldn't say either that I'm
a heavy user. I go as far as remapping some of my bind keys, but the
other day I had some trouble scrolling up and down a screen

start a connection is the serial device as a command line argument,
but how would I go about setting up the various connection parameters

cu/lsz works fine for me... the basic procedure is here:
http://soekris.kd85.com/flashupdate_4801

It might be 'download -' these days not just 'download'.

It's often incorrect handshake settings. Should usually be 'none'.

Re: [Soekris] Connecting to a net4521 from Mac OS X

2007-09-04 Thread Bob Camp
Hi

As others have mentioned, there are a lot of ways to do the Mac to
4521 connection. I have yet to find one that *does not* work on the
Mac for basic communication.

There is one thing to be careful about. The ComBios serial flash
update uses Xmodem-CRC. The process the bios uses is "tuned" to match
the Windows Hyperterminal implementation of the protocol. I have had
odd things happen with a couple of programs, both on Windows and the
Mac. I have not chased down the issues, I just switch over to
Hyperterminal when I'm doing an update.

As long as you are not doing flash updates, you should be ok with a
*lot* of different programs.

yep, I use the IOGear device. It's very small and the drivers are very
good. I have a keyspan device at work, and it's bulkier, and the
drivers create a device with a weird name.

IOGear = /dev/tty.usbserial0
Keyspan = /dev/tty.Keyspan0 (jeez, is that necessary?)

Yes, you need drivers, they should be supplied with the device you buy.

Thanks for the confirmation (based on Graham's earlier mail), I
think I'll definitely go with the Keyspan (or at least to begin with).

So you basically connect the Keyspan to the Cisco cable and from
there onto the Soekris box?

I'm sure I'll be happy with it too (hint, take a look at my mail
address ;-).

On a related note, I see that the MacPorts kermit package is both
unmaintained and outdated, at 8.0.209 while current is 8.0.211.
Should I just go ahead and try to update the Portfile in the MacPorts
repo? Or am I best advised not to? Are there any gotchas I should
look out for and/or will I break any dependent tool? (I'm asking you
guys since I've never worked with Kermit before while both of you
recommended a package that depends on it).

Thank you so much for this very valuable tip! Any hints on how I
should make these changes happen on Mac OS X? Some minicom flag/
option? Or should I look in sysctl(8)?

On the software front, personally I use ZTerm rather than minicom.
I've always used minicom on Linux but I think I had trouble getting
it to see my USB serial port, whereas ZTerm just worked. It's not
free though.

Thanks for these suggestions, I'll certainly look into them! One
question though, do they require Mac OS X specific drivers to work?

Hhhmmm, MacPorts... feel right at home! (I'm MacPorts project
manager ;-)

Thanks for the tip! I'll do my homework and study the device &
software as much as I can once I get all the peaces in place, but I
hope I can ping you for tips & pointers if I get stuck in the process.

I use a Keyspan USB to serial port adapter:

http://www.keyspan.com/products/usa19hs/homepage.spml

It comes with Mac drivers.

The cable I use is a Cisco router console cable. I think that you can
likely pick up an appropriate cable at a local PC shop. Bring the
laptop and the Soekris box and try cables till one works. Or buy a
router for the cable :-)

The application I use is minicom which I install via MacPorts:

http://www.macports.org/

I have been quite happy with this combination.

Tip: The default comm setting for the soekris boot monitor is 19200-8-
N-1. Your average FreeBSD kernel is set up for 9600-8-N-1 out of the
box. Trouble ensues if you don't change one or the other. Of course
your milage may vary with other operating systems. I use FreeBSD,
myself.

Re: [Soekris] Connecting to a net4521 from Mac OS X

2007-09-03 Thread Graham Freeman

Howdy, Juan,

I use my MacBook Pro to connect to various serial consoles, and the
IOGear GUC232A (http://www.iogear.com/main.php?
loc=product&Item=GUC232A)is the USB-to-serial adapter that I use. It
was a bit of a pain to setup, but I don't remember the details at
this point. I've heard that the Keyspan USA-19HS (http://
www.keyspan.com/products/usa19hs/) works better.

As far as the Soekris devices are concerned, I use a null modem cable
and it works fine.

With regard to software, I use Minicom via MacPorts/
Darwinports. :) 'sudo port install minicom' to install, and 'sudo
minicom' to run. Be sure to plug in the USB-to-serial adapter
before you run minicom.

Good luck,

[Soekris] Connecting to a net4521 from Mac OS X

2007-09-03 Thread Juan Manuel Palacios

Evening everyone!

I'm new on this list so I apologize before hand if any of my
questions are repeated and have been dealt with already, I've been
googling for a while and still don't have some things very clear.
Feel free to simply point me to some other [online] resource where I
can look up the information I'm looking for if it's been aired here
too many times here.

In a nutshell, I need to connect to the console in a net4521 device
from a Mac OS X computer (MacBook Pro running 10.4.10), so my obvious
question is how to accomplish that from both the hardware and
software fronts.

The box has a db9 serial port, so I'm guessing a db9 to USB
converter will help; but I'm not sure if the serial port on the 4521
is a DTE or a DCE, so I don't know if I'll need a null modem (female
to female?) to make the connection work or not (I should note that
I've been a Mac user all my life, so I don't know much about serial
ports other than USB ;-). In short, what hardware is recommended to
make the connection? If there are any Mac users reading, can you also
tell me if I'll need any drivers for the USB-db9 converter to work on
10.4?

Lastly, once the hardware part is dealt with, how do I reach the
console in the 4521? That is, what software should I use to actually
connect to the device? I'm fairly comfortable with the Unix aspect of
the system so please don't refrain from pointing me to some command
line only application, even if it means compiling it from source. I
could go as far as considering installing Linux and/or {Free,Net,Open}
BSD on my computer if any of those makes communicating with the 4521
any easier.

Thanks in advance for your help and time! Regards,...
