RE: VM-Ware

2013-01-15 Thread Chris Chia
Vmware doesn't support hardware graphic card.
Has anyone else using Parallels instead?

Anyway, it's possible to run Softimage Linux on a vmware.

While working within linux environments, I personnally find more enjoyable
using Softimage running in a windows VM than the linux version itself.

Except from a few harmless display bugs ( more often in the schematic than in
actual viewports ), it's definitely workable and has decent performance.
A very important thing is to make sure vmx processor acceleration is enabled in
the bios and in the vm configuration to have maximum display and computing
performance running your vms.

The most succesfull and stable attempt to run softimage in VMs was in parallels
desktop though,
Very stable with almost no display bugs virtualizing windows 7 64 sp1 using
parallels desktop 7 on osx lion.

Never got the chance to test parallels workstation extreme (
http://www.parallels.com/products/extreme/ ) on linux because it's slightly
expensive and only supported on redhat based distos as we stick on debian based
ones over here.

VirtualBox is cool... it's free and all. But performance wise it's quite bad.
VMWareFusion is quite speedy on my home machine. It's the only way I run
windows at home anymore.

Was it a VM virtualizing Linux and running Softimage that was the issue for
you? I never tried that as we use Linux natively here.

required video card drivers to work on Linux inside of a VM. I think
that cumulatively Exocortex has lost at least a couple of whole days
of effort trying to get to work over the last couple years -- but
maybe things got better with recent version of Softimage / VMWare?

Someone should make a webpage that describes the steps for VMWare or
VirtualBox as that is a huge thing, especially for us plugin
developers. We've been forced to buy additional PCs or do dual boot
configurations.

But when reloading the redo scene Softimage crashes again, and

RE: installing on opensuse64 12.1

Hi Chris,

The computer is not on a network, just a single computer. I have had
some confusion about what the appropriate "host" and "hostname" is/are
on linux, so that may be inappropriately labeled. The license server
was running. I have not delved into the selinux stuff.

I need to know what user softimage runs as.

I do not know if the machine could detect the license server. I think
the license server is running fine.

I think that it is case where xsi does not have permission to access the
"screen" but that is just a guess.

thank you,

Hi Konstatin,

I think so too. (display problem)

I CAN run other programs but I think it is likely that they were
properly installed using the YAST program, and that something was not
specified (by me) at installation.

I logged in as root, rather than su-c or sudo. No dice.

You are using a c-shell and did so during installation?
What graphic-card/driver are you running?
SE-Linux is disabled?
Why Suse?

RE: installing on opensuse64 12.1

2013-01-15 Thread Eric Gunther
Hi Thomas,

Just tried again,

Logged in as root

Yes using csh

-to start lmgrd -c 'license file'

-to start /usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011/Applcation/bin/xsi

Yes used csh to Install, although I could try again. ( take a bit though )

I cannot see if there is SE-Linux on this system or not. I have checked out
all
the administration facilities in YAST and couldn't find any specific reference
to SE-Linux,

There are many facilities for Administration (security policy, login
enviroment, boot)
although none specifically mention SE-Linux.

I would have to do more searching...

a quick look, it seems as though SE-Linux is not used in opensuse.

OpenSuse I have found to be the best overall system for me after various
distros. Previously
I had tried Fedora because I saw that it was supported (by SI) but had
difficulty then as well.
So, because I use the system for other stuff also, and I have a windows
installation of SI, I moved on
in terms of linux OS.

2013-01-15 Thread Thomas Volkmann
Are you trying to run Softimage as root (which you shouldn't do) or is the error
the same no matter if root or regular user?

RE: installing on opensuse64 12.1

2013-01-15 Thread Thomas Volkmann
And from that same commandline (what are you using?) you can start other
programs like xterm or xeyes or whatever without a problem?
If so, I have absolutely no clue what could be going on. If you get the same
error something Xauthority related seems to be fxxxed (in that terminal at
least) and I would recommend googling in that direction.

Re: installing on opensuse64 12.1

2013-01-15 Thread Eric Gunther
you mean, when running ./xsi?

root

but I get a different error with

#xhost +local:linux-hq44

hostname: Name or service not know

is the only error.

according to the man page for xhost, you can enter user or host, but I
get the same error in either case...

I think now the problem may be with the LICENSE I generated.

Thank You,

When whoami gives you root, it means you are logged in as root in that terminal.
Make sure whoami returns your username (linux-hq44?) before you try to start
XSI.

You mean that particular xterm?

OK

Re: installing on opensuse64 12.1

2013-01-15 Thread Thomas Volkmann
mmmhh, ok.
you were doing:
#xhost +local:hostname
try:
#xhost +local:username

so just to get it right:
you open a terminal (xterm?)
you run whoami and it prints your username
you run: csh (or tcsh)
you run: /usr/Application/Softimage/Softimage_20/Application/bin/xsi
ERROR
you can run xeyes without error
run: env

like that?

you get the same errors when you try to source .xsi_2011, right?

Unfortunately I'm not in front of a linux-box right now
but you could try:
xhost +localhost:eric

since XAUTHLOCALHOSTNAME=localhost
I don't know about that one:
XAUTHORITY=/var/run/gdm/auth-for-eric-nRFtsF/database
I never hat to deal with stuff like that, but that is the direction I would be
googling for. It is strange that you can run other apps though :/
What does your /etc/hosts look like? No idea if is causing this, but that file
has fxxxed up things so often for me.
I'm off for today.

cheers,
Thomas

Hi all. I'm interested in what people consider as the essentials for a small

I'd also be interested in hearing what people have in their personal toolkits.
For instance wherever I bring along a personal workgroup which contains a
plethora of ICE nodes, a small script library of example code and esoteric
tools, a set of useful addons by others, and a custom menu with a set of more
personal tools, mostly little time savers, things like general purpose models
and lighting rigs, etc.

A lot of these things are little but I'd hate to be without 'em. For instance a
simple menu command which removes screen widgets and makes the BG dark grey is
so trivial but I'd really miss it. Same goes for Ciaran's signed distance field
emitter, I love that thing...

Funnily enough the ones I'm most attached to aren't the big asset
management tools; it's my 'Select All Children/Immediate Children/Parents',
'Create Control Root & Target', 'Reset Control Root' and 'Parent like
Maya' plugins which take the most use. I think the most complicated one
there is about 5 lines long...

2013-01-15 Thread Eric Gunther
I can't find that file,

find: `.xsi_2011': No such file or directory

searched the entire hard drive.

I hadn't seen it, but that makes me more confident.

there is however, an XSI.bin, and in that case I get

eric@linux-hq44:/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011/Application/bin> ./XSI.bin
./XSI.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libadlmint.so.1: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

I looked and that is located in the same directory along with

eric@linux-hq44:/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011/Application/bin> ls *mint*
libadlmint_libFNP.so.1.3.34 libadlmint.so libadlmint.so.1
libadlmint.so.1.3 libadlmint.so.1.3.34

before I was trying to change permissions and owner of the file but seem
to get the same result. if I run

eric@linux-hq44:/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011/Application/bin>ldd ./XSI.bin

2013-01-15 Thread Stephen Blair

Hi

The .xsi_2011 file is in /usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011

In my case:

cd /usr/Softimage
find . -name .xsi_2013_SP1
./Softimage_2013_SP1/.xsi_2013_SP1

When you run this command:

/usr/Application/Softimage/Softimage_2011/Application/bin/xsi

it is actually a script that sources .xsi_2011 for you

On 15/01/2013 1:53 PM, Eric Gunther wrote:

I can't find that file,

searched the entire hard drive.

I hadn't seen it, but that makes me more confident.

there is however, an XSI.bin, and in that case I get

eric@linux-hq44:/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011/Application/bin> ./XSI.bin

./XSI.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libadlmint.so.1: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

I looked and that is located in the same directory along with

eric@linux-hq44:/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011/Application/bin> ls *mint*
libadlmint_libFNP.so.1.3.34 libadlmint.so libadlmint.so.1
libadlmint.so.1.3 libadlmint.so.1.3.34

before I was trying to change permissions and owner of the file but seem
to get the same result. if I run

eric@linux-hq44:/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2011/Application/bin>ldd ./XSI.bin

Hey guys -

I've been asked to help out on the show "Film Riot", and one of the things
we were discussing is creating your own HDR images.

I know HDRLabs has a ton of great info, but I was curious to know if anyone
else had any good info or resources on the subject that I could pass along.

It's not something I normally do, so I wanted to make sure I was giving
them up-to-date info.

Thanks,

I know, same here... The best scripts I use are tiny, like one that parents
offset nulls on every object selected. And a 1-line script that cycles viewport
background colors is great for making particles easier to see. Same goes for
ice compounds, the simple ones are often the most useful, I have one which
mimics Maya's sphRand function and I use it all the time.

-Zip constrain tool, select 10 objects (A) then select 10 objects (B) and
every object gets constrained to there significant other, A1 const B1, A2
const B2. just speeds things up so much.
- create cluster with null on each point from a selection of points.

shadow softness when increased way past one will do this, while also
softening the shadow edges.
But, yeah, would be nice to decouple those controls.

jep, the small tools are essential for day to day work. like:
-creating a point cloud with an ice tree (!!!)
-selection sensitive parenting primitive creation.
-all kinds of transform tools. switch transforms, add object(s) under srt at
transform or component selection …
-uncountable compounds.
-pass/ partition helpers
-utility shader creation

I've wrote so many small tools, that i need a pipeline just for organizing them
;)

A centralized launcher and some coding standards helps a lot, otherwise

ICE rigid bodies

2013-01-15 Thread Nick Angus
Hi folks,

I have a simple simulation of particles emitting and colliding with an object,
I am using the 'simulate rigid bodies' node to do this. I want to spawn more
particles on collision but cannot quite get my head around how. The old method
of 'spawn on collision' works fine for non rbd's but I want it to be a bit more
accurate and realistic than that

Cheers for any thoughts

For the time being, I put an extra infinite light in there pointing
straight down. I ran across another post saying you needed to crank the
intensity way up to see it. Earlier I couldn't get any lights to make a
difference other than the sun but I am now aware of the need for extremely
strong lights in a physical setup. I'll look into your solution Jason.
Thanks for the very thorough response.

I guess It will depend on what you are doing.

I usually carry always my own modeling tools to do simple things like
merge and separate, separate clusters and preserve weights in one click
symetrize polygon and weights
clean Scene and objects according to the project
Mirror and flip FCurves
Copy Animation Branches
Copy Weights (through Gator)
Select mirror components
Align center, objects and components
change image clips and paths
reload scene
lock points
round weights
etc, etc.

Very simple things that I do a lot when I'm modeling or animating and it
really speeds up my workflow.

Some other tools I use:
Eric T.'s ET Naming , RCTools, MX_Roundish, Taut, blr vertex color, Gear,
Ahmidou Lyazidi UVStamp, Incremental Save

UVConnectFace
http://www.ceres.dti.ne.jp/xb1080/script/UV/UV6.html

and a bunch of basic scripts I customize according to my current project.

I also use a modified version of Gotetz's Non Registered Script to organize
scripts that I don't use all the time.
