RE: Custom Param Set

2015-02-11 Thread Ponthieux, Joseph G. (LARC-E1A)[LITES]
In a way yes. The scene is running as a simulation with an extremely
significant amount of ICE driving it. Its working reliably and I don't want to
mess with it. The new objects and their appearance are really quite simple but
integrating them in the proper place now would only be best of I used ICE to
automate them as part of the existing workflow, which would be preferable. The
point is if I were to use ICE for this it would not be applied specific to the
element being designed, but that ICE would be used to actually generate or
managed the elements as part of other structure that is already governed by ICE
and integrated to that. The time involved to integrate in the proper place now,
and test properly, would be quite significant. The irony to ICE I suppose,
building it takes some time up front, but it can save hours or days downstream.

Further, I had not done this in a while, figured it was really simple, and it
is (presuming you remember how to do it).

Plugins aside, the process of actual animation is where I heard the
least amount of complaining from XSI users concerning Maya.

But it seems to be mostly setting (or fixing) custom stuff up (or making
setups work) that's not quite the same experience.

Which you can always figure out something to get to whatever your aiming
for, without necessarily being so much of a Tehnichian in XSI, just by
following feeling. (or intuition)

And I dont think technicians should need to be a major, or even an
equal part in a pipeline, because they somewhat more rare doing things
more technically difficult,

or to require artists to be almost equal parts 'technicians' themselves.

But XSI's 'friendlyness' also very much appeals to the techiest of
techs, having been described as like out of a 'TD's' wet dream xD

That is only an issue for compiled stuff, anything where the actual plugin
is Python/MEL (which includes those where Python fronts the plugin and the
use of compiled libraries that don't link to the API libs is through Python
bindings) will always go across versions fine unless the SDK itself had
compatibility breaking changes between releases, and that's exceedingly

RE: Custom Param Set

2015-02-11 Thread Ponthieux, Joseph G. (LARC-E1A)[LITES]
So yes, AddExpression was what I was looking for. I’ve managed to get the
element working and exported as a model. In hindsight this was a very simple
thing to do. Took all of nine lines of extra code added to the wizard
generated property page and a handful of extra single line expressions. The
result is a simple Model export of a glow ball, with a constant size relative
the camera and a custom settings window. I can reuse the Model multiple times
in the same scene with no namespace conflicts. Had I been more familiar with
the proper syntax, this would have taken very little time to set up. The render
tree and incidence shader setup was probably the most complex thing in the
model.

Thanks everybody

I’m gonna really miss this software….

Sorry to drag up this old thread.

Did anyone find a solution for this issue? The SDK help displays in
ultra-simple unformatted mode and, even if I were able to ignore the ugliness,
none of the seemingly clickable links actually work. I've attached a
screenshot.

It's happening for us on both 2015 and 2015 SP1 and over all machines. The
regular help (eg. clicking a ? in a ppg) is working as expected.

Yeah it really bugs me out that all the Autodesk 2015 documentation doesn't
work in IE (11). It works in Chrome, but buggy.
Believe it or not but a lot of people actually use IE as default browser.
Please fix this Autodesk!

There's not a lot of meat in your original question. There are tons
of modes, user preferences, tools and hotkeys in XSI, three different
ways to do things, probably everyone uses it differently. Can you be
more precise and compare specifically what you do in XSI vs Maya and
people can answer specifically that. I think these plugins links are
shots in the dark.

RE: Softimage 2015 SP1

2015-02-11 Thread Hsiao Ming Chia
There is a workaround to allow them to exist together.
Please have a look at Luc-Eric's earlier post below:

install does a lot more, but if you already have 2015 installed, just
copying SP1 over and registering it will work.

note: you can do these steps on a single machine:
copy softimage 2015 folder to softimage 2015.old,
uninstall 2015, install 2015 SP1, copy the 2015.old back, do a
runonce.bat on 2015 and now you have both build installed on your PC.

martin.chatterjee.li...@googlemail.com wrote:

So copying the folder plus running runonce.bat really is the _full_
equivalent of a normal install? (provided that all dependencies like
redistributables, ... are already present, of course)

Cool, I wasn't aware of that - I always assumed there was something else
going on during install besides file copying and invoking that .bat file.

Thanks for that info, that's really helpful.

 Cheers, Martin
