Hello,

you can also try Implosia
http://www.si-community.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6373&hilit=momentum
its now free, You can create booleans via Icetree or sricptedOp vie the

Hi list,

I had several projects lately  that involved animated booleans with
CAD data, which is problematic sometimes. I used the old BoolTrace
shader by Alan Jones but it has its drawbacks: With many objects,
using different materials, it's hard to  keep track of the shaders.
Another problem was, that there is a limitation in the shader with
reflections. Let's say you have a box and a sphere and the box is
cutting the sphere in half. If another objects that is reflective,
intersects the cutting volume (the box) it will reflect the box by
it's primary rays. I assume that is because the shader interchanges
primary and secondary rays under the hood. I could potentially get it
solved by using passes/partition trickery or another shader to get
selective reflections on object basis. However, this becomes quite
complicated with a handful ob objects, all using different materials.

On some projects I switched back to real (geo) booleans and fixed the
"popping" of meshes by slighty adjusting the fcurves or cleaning the
topology a bit, but its a hack. On another project I got away with
slightly incorrect reflections using render time booleans. At the end
it worked somehow but it was almost never elegant or straight forward.

Is there an alternative to the (rather old) booltrace shader for XSI?
Anything for redshift in that area? Last, not least, how do you
approach animated booleans with complicated/heavy meshes nowadays?

Thanks,

Sven

Did you try to merge the saved scene in a fresh new Scene,
another option mute first the viewport/s and the merge, if this works
check the Alembic-path.
Maybe it can also be a security-problem with the files, start softimage

And last to check I dont no if softimage saves the alembics when

I've always believed the long term strategy was to retire
Softimage from the day it was part of the Autodesk portfolio. The
assets they were buying were the development team. In the interim
years parts of Maya have been informed by Softimage and MCG in Max
is very much a cousin of ICE (with a twist of Rhino's Grasshopper
to boot).

You only have to look at what's happened since Autodesk purchased
the Rhino T-Splines plugin (SubD for CAD). No real improvements
for Rhino customers for years and then in November T-Splines in
Rhino is retired. Meanwhile over at Autodesk, T-Splines is now a
key toolset in three different Autodesk CAD products - Fusion 360,
Inventor and Alias Speedform (part of most Alias Design Suite
products). Fusion is free for non commercial use, $300 per annum
for commercial, Inventor is $2k per annum and Alias Speedform
which is pretty much the T-Splines technology on it's own with a
snazzy bespoke UI/UX, and can only be purchased with Alias
products which start at about $2.5k per annum and rise to $25k for
the Auto suite. A$300 plugin leveraged across all those key
Autodesk products and Rhino customers left with a plugin that
won't function with the forthcoming Rhino 6. Merciless is putting
it kindly.

Autodesk as a company had missed it's earnings per share
and even though media made up 15% of its budget (or maybe
because of that) the least successful of the three similar
products got the chop. I think if there hadn't been a
panicked push for cost-cutting, XSI may have been around a

had dried up for a while. There were multiple games that
had been in development for a few years that were coming
to the end of their devs cycles, had been version locked
and would have been renewed at that point.

Anyway, conjecture on my part, but I think it's not fair

at least better than Weight Hammer.

Meanwhile I'm just sending my data to Softimage, work with
weights in Softimage (way faster!) and then send only the weights
data in a custom format back to Maya.

If you install gear, there is a very nice script, that lets you select
some points and a blend shape and lets you remove the shape
contribution of those selected points so you isolate only the part

just get the Weights array. Now that I think about it VBScript would
have been a little faster.
Probably I should try C to handle more deformers faster, but it is
doing the job for our current game project.

I've included a workgroup with PySide and PyQtForSoftimage for easy
installation but I'm not sure if I'm infringing something with this.
If there is any problem please let me know and I'll pull it out.

Re: Bad scenes or geometry crashing

2016-08-03 Thread wavo

Hi Morten,
I guess you checked already what to do, the only way what i can say is
to uncheck

(if checked!)
in the preferences the Detect corrupted polygon meshes... inside the
Datamangement/Scene Debugging-tab! but only a fresh/first import from maya ,

then the merge into scene(but you did this already)
then check the meshes -select one point with rectangle select to test
doublepoints
 -remove
envelope-deformers, deformes etc to find the problem
  -filter points and
check the pointcount
  -export only the
meshes from Maya and check the display.
  -check the modelling
stack maybe there are dissolveComponent when You use the Detect
corrupted polygon meshes...

best wishes

Walter

Am 8/3/2016 um 9:52 AM schrieb Morten Bartholdy:

I have run into the odd situation with a scene which crashes xsi when saving
after making a number of changes, ie. materials, groups, passes and partitions,
all run of the mill stuff.

The geometry (which is relatively complex - 1939 objects 28+ million polys)
comes from Maya but is likely generated from CAD software, judging by the poor
tesselation and joins between surfaces in the modeling.

In Maya the model looks fine shaded upon initial inspection, but when selected
displays corrupt geometry on a number, but not all, of the individual pieces in
Viewport 2. Switching to legacy viewport removes the visual glitches... but
hardly the problem. The problem is like having an extreme randomize node on
some of the parts, pointy polygons sticking in all directions, changing as the
model is orbited. I hoped to be able to clean it up somehow and exported it as
fbx into xsi, where, initially, it looked fine and saved and loaded fine, until
I started working with the scene.

So my question here is if anybody has good ideas regarding how to possibly
clean up the geometry, troubleshoot and pinpoint bad geometry - anything that
can help identify and select the bad parts, and if possible, also fix them? I
have removed Maya Usernormals (Arnold doesn't like them), merged the scene in,
and am now in the proces of dotxsi'ing it out and back in in order to perhaps
shed some bad data on the culprits. I was thinking obj export would be so
rudimentary it might throw unwanted stuff away, but the modle is quite complex
hierarchially, so atm I consider it a no go.

Any pointer will be much appreciated.

How possible is it to achieve this effect on SI?

just for info,

after installing win10 you have one month to switch back to 7 or 8.1(at

after this time you have to set up older version manually

Am 12/3/2014 3:20 PM, schrieb Oliver Weingarten:

Hey Jill,

Thanks for that info.

You might understand that we did not expect much from this SP1 as AD
already killed our software. But this "huge" list of around 10 bugs
fixed it even a lot less anybody expected to be a "Service Pack"
people might even pay for via subscription. By the way, is it our job
to make sure that critical bugs are locked..??
Despite that, breaking the ability to install service packs beside
older installations totally misses daily production workflows. Before
you "trust" a new version, you will test it for quite some time before
you make the switch. Having to install/deinstall software to do so, is
something politely expressed "unfortunate".

AD really knows how to "deliver better software faster". Congrats!

Cheers,

can anyone point me to any other options?

things ive tried thus far (not in this order):

- checked the registry for issues related to jscript and vbscript
(nothing found)
- uninstalled any newly added software
- renamed the user preferences
- double checked graphics driver issues by
  a) editing the layout file to open with the explorer rather than
the view manager
  b) reinstalled an approved graphics driver
- installed 2 new clean versions of softimage (2014 and 2014 sp2)
- runonce.bat (all all versions) - nothing showed up that i saw
- launched xsibatch.. it worked

i also tried the process manager... but.. i couldnt find anything
outstanding.. though i admit at a certain point.. i got
confused..and stopped reading thru it.

thanks for anyone that can help.

Hello,

if you using Frischluft or another post-dof and you have the
renderpower, than render the Z-channel twice as large, match the beauty
to the Z-channel size, make your composit and after that rescale it to
the output-format.

2013/8/13 Nancy Jacobs mailto:illus...@mip.net>>

Hi,

Can anyone point me to a book or any other current information
about depth compositing (the output Softimage is capable of) in
After Effects? Yes I wish I had Nuke, or that Digital Fusion
hadn't discontinued its low-end product DFX. And I wish that
Softimage put out rpf files, or something that would contain depth
info in the main fileand object info...

It appears that depth compositing in After effects is a very messy
business anyway, so ANY advice, or pointers toward where I can
learn this Softimage/AE combo would be much appreciated. And
plugins perhaps? I'm stuck with AE.

I would also like to use object ID info. I have not been able to
find enough information to be able to do any of this, and have
been looking and experimenting for days. AE documentation is
sorely lacking.

I would like to learn all this in some depth, please advise!
Thanks,
Nancy
