It's a long time since I made a clean install on a linux system.

These are libs from the last Fedora version that ran out of the box for me (14
or 16? I'm on 26 now). If these don't work for you, you might want to try
libs from centos6.
This should get SI up and running.

good luck,

Re: Soft 2014 in Linux is "always-on-top"?

2017-09-12 Thread Ahmed Barakat
Hi Christoph
I know it's an ancient thread but I am trying to run Softimage on Centos 7
got the same /usr/lib64/libXext.so.6: undefined symbol: _XGetRequest error
and I followed your recommendation
" Fortunately the solution to your problem is fairly simple:

mv
/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2014_SP2/Application/mainwin/mw/lib-amd64_linux/X11/libX11.so.6
/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2014_SP2/Application/mainwin/mw/lib
-amd64_linux/X11/~libX11.so.6"

but unfortunately now I get this error
"/usr/Softimage/Softimage_2015/Application/bin/XSI.bin: symbol lookup
error: /usr/lib64/libX11.so.6: undefined symbol: xcb_wait_for_reply64"

do you know what might be the problem I googled it with no luck

Thanks

Since it was annoying me so much - take the mainwin folder from 2013
Starts up just fine and I can use fluxbox again (instead of KDE where
the problem didn't occur).

It's not quite as simple as linking dynamically vs statically. The fact
soft is still tied to a GCC fixed by mainwin (or was last I checked)
isn't exactly helping matters either. That said shell requirements are a
non issue honestly, the issues are others and on a completely different
scale.
It's not all roses for some other software either, but yeah soft tends to
be the pickier of the lot

how to do dynamic and/or static linking so that the programs won't break
outside of exactly defined lab conditions.

and while we are at it, i don't get why Softimage users after over 10

many hoops just for installation and starting. Whats the deal will all the

To be honest there is very little technical reason. Linux Mint is one of those
distributions that feels right. I like how they are doing things. I use it at
both work and home and its rare for me to feel so comfortable with a linux

Hi Sylvain,

I'm not at my machine right now, but I think the only thing you need to
do is copy some libraries from an older Fedora version(F14 probably) and
put them into ...Application/bin/.
It's definitely libXext.so.6 and two others I think starting with libX.
I can tell you later exactly and send you the files.

It's not because it is fragile in Linux but there are so many flavours of Linux
and the system lib versions differ in these flavours.

To make sure the installation works 100% on your machine, do check the release
note for the list of supported OSes. Else, one would probably have to customise
his lib to be in sync with Softimage's.

Re: Soft 2014 in Linux is always-on-top?

2013-07-26 Thread Sylvain Lebeau

Hi Ognjen ...

yes you are right and i noticed that pretty quickly when a yum update
didnt allow me to boot anymore. Fedora is bleeding edge but updates
are dangerous like you just said.

To encompass this, we've synced the fedora repo onto our own server here
and removed the offical fedore repo from the
/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo config file. Adding only our own
local repository.

We have a production repo that dont sync with fedora and an evaluation
repo that does sync. So we use a test machine to see the impact of the
update before deplyoing on the production repo.

We are using Pulp to make this possible.
http://www.pulpproject.org/

it is a bit of a pain at the beginning but a bless afterward.

:-) ... now i just need to make Softimage launch. gr

Maybe it depends on the windowanager. I have the same problem when
running Fluxbox, but it seems to be fine under KDE.

I had that issue once in a while but wasn't consistent between working
sessions. Another one I had was the inability to resize the XSI window.
Reopening XSI would fix that though.
That thing disappeared with the new qfe.

Maybe just make sure of the usual thing.. 'always on top' isn't checked,
tried resetting your prefs or trash the mainwin folder if you haven't done
that already?
