Re: Texture file format

2014-04-22 Thread Alan Fregtman
If you use Arnold you'll use .tx files for optimal memory management.
(They're highly efficient, if a tad large, multiresolution TIFFs.)

Else, png and exr for the win!

I mostly use PSD, since I use Photoshop to create many of my textures.
I used to convert to TGA files, in the old days, when Softimage wanted only
pic format, and used a plugin , for Photoshop, to write PIC files. (many
moons ago)

Today is so much easier being able to use PSD files directly in Softimage.
Just don't use CMYK PSD files. :)

Re: Texture file format

2014-04-22 Thread Morten Bartholdy
It depends to some degree on which renderer you want to use. Some
renderers, like Arnold works a lot smoother with mipmapped textures for
which we use tiff and exr. MR is pretty good at handling all the texturing
stuff for you as well as 3Delight and Redshift. Tga's would be fine in MR,
but bear in mind you may want to use formats that support float for bump,
displacement and other special maps - tiff and exr do this.

Same for me, have been using TGA.
