Now that I have Soft installed in my Brand new powerhouse Boxx I am tempted
to start using it again a lot more. I see that I have grown rusty in my XSI
skills.  Need to refresh my memory.

Great thread, trying to catch up on these. LOL. Still nice to see familiar
names on here. I'm still using it especially for animation. If you tried
messing with animation curves in Maya or C4d...ugh...forget it. I'm still
in the commercial biz and maybe one of the last few generalists still
working. I use Soft constantly and have a brand new box and it still runs
great for now! I try to use other apps when I have the time or if there's
something I just can't ignore that's actually pretty cool but I'll still
use Soft forever most likely. Hope this community keeps going!

If you're part of the VES and watched the behind the scenes you would have
seen XSI being used on the Lego Movie 2 production. I am sure they have
moved on since but that wasn't that long ago that a full feature length
animation (an innovative one at that) was being done with XSI.

Let’s keep it running please till the last 3 softimage users.
The other si-community is already talking about cost of running website
risks being too much: they want to close it down.
I don’t think this list is disturbing autodesk, is it?

Just wanted to chime in how much this list meant to me over the years! My
life would definitely look different today if I didn't meet the only
XSI-junkie in a 3dsMax centric Studio on this list, which resulted in a
7year Gig in a lovely small town in Sweden. I'm lookin gat you Jens!
So, still and forever lurking, but I haven't touched SI in a year and the
"in Softimage I would be done by now" moments get fewer and fewer and get
replaced with Houdini/Blender, whenever I have to work in Cinema4d...
Great meeting you guys! I'll stick around...

There are no buttons yet because the google group works in archive mode, as I 
understand it.

I never used google groups but I think it will be accessible the same way as a 
regular mail server. So you can use your email client as well?

I would suggest sooner.  Say December 15, 2019.

For the past few years, as Luc-Eric alluded to, there have been hiccups with 
the list server near the holidays.  Better to make the transition before the 
next hiccup while everybody is still in their daily routines to notice what is 
happening.  Not that this list gets much traffic anymore, but making the 
transition sooner would reduce the noise and panic from people asking what’s 
going on.

I’ve been silently watching this list for a few years now. Just wanted to

This list helped me countless times, so I can’t appreciate it enough.

I kept on doing 3d (now in Houdini), but Soft has a special palce in my

ICE still saves the day over any Modo, Maya, Max system, any day blindfolded.

Hi all,
I would like to thank all of you that contribute to extending my knowledge
of XSI and showcasing some of the cool stuff I've seen around, so thank you
beautiful people :D

As for me, I've joined the dark side and switched to Maya, and beside
hating all the constant crashes and all its fault, I also learned a bit of
MEL scripting and developed some advanced stuff for character rigging, so
this is a huge plus in my bookbut still hating every second :D

It'll be nice to still get in contact, say using Linkedin, so that people
can still see what they're doing and stay in contact.

Has been a really fun ride, my heart is still with XSI, so long fellas!

bunch of wonderful people and while I don't make a living with XSI anymore,
I don't regret choosing to start my career with it. <3

I also have to tip my virtual hat to Raffaele, whom I met here, for his
"Python for XSI TDs" intro course that was the beginning of my falling in
love with the Python language. After my professional XSI days ran out, I
decided to pivot to a fulltime *Pipeline Developer* role and it's been
really fun so far. (You might even say.. *out of this world
*.)

I echo all the sentiments about how bloody amazing you bunch of lunatics
have been over the years in sharing your knowledge, you've been a life-line
on so many occasions!

Like many of you, I'll still be clinging on to Softimage with my
fingernails nails till i bleed, and have no intention to leave it behind
any time soon, but I am going to have to get on board with something else
soon - it sounds like the consensus is around the Blender/Houdini axis.
Maya can 'do one', it makes grown men cry...

If the list closes in it's current form, leave a trail of breadcrumbs to

Lol. Some of us just want to watch the world burn :)

Maybe we are rendering very different things.

I've been using redshift for about 3 years now, and I love it.

I just find I get prettier pictures out of cycles, and it's free.

The pain of having to export alembics all the time is the only reason I 
don't use it as my main render.

LOL...I'm using Softimage at this very moment...still. I want to learn more
Houdini and Blender 2.8 is much better, but I am working on a book cover
and I need to get the job done more quickly than the time it would take to
get it done in either of those two. Softimgage has not reached the end of
its useful life for me ;)

Does look like it's time to learn Blender, though.

Houdini is working more and more like Soft with every release. Or I should
probably say the artist-centric part of its workflow is. So maybe I'll go
there instead of Blender, but Blender + Epic support is really enticing...

pure crap compared to redshift. rendering 5 times longer and still haveing 
bunch of noise, just to name one of the issues.
I have no idea how someone can even compare cycles and redshift :))

The Softimage list has been a big part of my professional life, and I feel
I'm not alone in that regard.
This community was the perfect size. Small enough to feel like a family
where we practically just could use our first names, but big enough to not
lack in knowledge. That, and the fact that everyone is so nice and helpful,
is the things I'm gonna miss the most and I fear I'll never find a greater
community again.

I remember the first Siggraph I went to... To travel around the world to a
huge conference where I didn't really know anyone. I had the Softimage
dinner to look forward to where I got to meet some of you that I've talked
with online for years. These annual dinners was small and not like a huge
user group party and the feeling of a family grew stronger.
Maybe that's why it hurt extra much when AD killed SI.

I still use Softimage from time to time because it's still faster at a lot
of things and I also try to keep SItoA alive and up to date.
I really hope this list lives for some more time, so my vote is to move it
if/when it becomes necessary to do that.

Adios everyone, it is finally time for me to move on.  I am very grateful to 
have been a part of the Soft user community since 1994.  I think we all saw the 
writing on the wall when Autodesk acquired Softimage.   I am pretty  sure they 
could not have done a better job of driving an established user base away.   
Things change and survival is about adapting to the current situation.
My world is now Houdini and to some degree C4D as well as some dabbling with 
real time engines.
I see some of you around those places from time to time and it is a nice 
feeling to see acquaintances and friends from days past.   I am glad to have 
had the opportunities I had with Soft and with the great community around it.  
Thanks to those who have kept this going for as long as it has.

I think it would be better to just set a date for switching over to the Google 
group and abandon the server before it gets pulled or stops working.

On that date stop redirecting messages to the Google group and update the 
server admin message to redirect people to the Google group. (or send out one 
last email and auto unsubscribe everyone)

I think this is the
same for a lot of us, virtual people becoming real friends and
having meet-ups during user groups and XSI presentations.

Some form of Google groups would be best I guess, despite my
aversion to anything Google.
Discord is nice, but not really for a list you want to want to
search later on.
And anyone who suggests a FB group is automatically banned from
the new system :P

Will keep an eye on this one..

This list saved my life so many times. It will be a sad day when they shut this 
server down, but it doesn't sound like its happening yet right?  The email says 
we should just consider moving the list.

A sad day indeed, thanks for keeping it ticking over as long as you have,
I've learnt a huge amount from here over the years!

Moving on with a mix of Maya, Houdini and blender, still nothing comes
close to the simplicity and logic of xsi.
