There are log entries for a VE3JW Canadian club station that apparently
operates CW in the 80m Amateur band.
Other than that I thought it could be a MARS or other type of Auxiliary type
station calling another of the same type station but often even MARS calls are
able to be googled.

My question about timing is, does the digital begin and end cleanly between
"buzzes"?  It would not make sense to bother generating a signal only to have
part of it covered up and therefore potentially disrupting the decode of the
digital information by having it with/under other noise.  That could work if
the frequency spectrum of the buzzer and the digital were far enough apart that
they are being filtered out with a very narrow bandwidth receiver but given the
nature of field radios as likely common short wave radios and not being that
special (unless modified I suppose) it seems unlikely they would mix signals.
I admit I was unable to look at the signal last night so I will listen to the
recorded signal hopefully this evening to try to hear it better.
Examination by someone with a decent audio editing program or a storage O-scope
would show these timings and any separations between signals.
After that I would look for dissimilar fading and differently timed QSB between
the two audios. That would likely show that there were 2 sites involved.  Just
my thoughts.

There's data bursts in that audio stream...I can hear them though

Very interesting. I had taken a break for a bit to work on other related
activities including my first 1296 EME but I am interested in getting caught up
again. This is interesting stuff. My question would be, does it come from the
same source and location? Is this someone fooling around and trying to be
disruptive or misleading those that keep tabs on the buzzer or even the Russian
Govt? Format and timing with the buzz? All preliminary questions. I'll take a
better look/listen tonight.

Hello Group:

Over the past couple of days, a Reddit user has recorded UVB-76 "The
Buzzer" and noted what sounded like an odd digital signal mixed in between
the normal buzzes. This morning, I tuned to the signal via the Mala, Sweden

I too had never been to that site but I am against that sort of government

Also, the folks at Spectrum Monitor may have something to add to this issue.

Boy that's a terrible graphic, and you would think they were standardized but
they aren't. A quick search of the internet for similar images shows all manner
of logos, image sizes and types. Being as it's supposed to be the US Federal

Anyway, on with the show.

I don't know the backstory on this, or if in fact that this is even real

I listen mostly on Android devices. My phone and tablet seem to be OK except
for occasional network issues on the phone itself but I set the buffer higher
and once I lock in on something I turn the waterfall off and it's fine. Usually
all I do with it is compare frequencies heard locally with the same freq in
Europe. I do admit it's great to have available something that can hunt
military and governmental stations as well as commercial from some of our less
friendly countries, like North Korea.  Always fun to hear how rosey things are

Plus there was I believe a digital pirate using SSTV transmissions at one time
as at least part of his/her broadcast.
And there was the super oddball digital signal I heard one night and reported
to the folks in Spectrum Magazine. Still no known explaination for that signal.
Very odd that one.  They ran a photo of the screen of my SDRPlay showing it as
it happened just before Christmas last year.  A real head scratcher, but not at
all common.

One oddity that still seems quite interesting to me however was the
introduction of a combination of modes such as in the "Cuban" Nunbers
transmissions with a group or two spoken by the friendly and familiar female
Spanish voice followed by a digital file, then another group or two sponen and
more digital. For some reason I really REALLY want to know what's in thise
digital segments.  Those transmissions come in quite loud here in Ohio.
Generally always S9+.

There are times pirates and "spooks" show up inside the Amateur Radio bands but
I don't think it's all that often. We self police fairly well with RDF and so
on. Generally I don't listen for interesting government or spy stuff inside the
ham bands myself.
PS, I really don't type well on tiny keypads like on my phone. I turned spell
check off long ago as it was really goofing up a lot.

Mhz is inside the Amatwur Radio 20m band. What you are
hearing is the symphony of HF-JT65 users. Its a slow digital
mode we use. Using HF-JT65 software you can listen in. Half
of the transmissions start on alternate minutes. The quiet
time is processing time for computers to decode the
 messages.

The unid buzzer-like marker on 4020 kHz is still active. Probably from
eastern Europe/Russia as it is audible during the same time that the buzzer
on 4625 kHz is audible here in Holland. Is it a new Russian military freq
marker? Time will tell.

Ary,What does the pattern of the signal look like? How wide and so on? I ran
into a bit of a mystery that was published in the Frb edition of Spectrum
Monitor where I found what appeared to be a pirate signal at 4.060 mHz
Christmas eve, playing music but OFDM was mentioed by one of the editors as
what the signal looked like.  Just wondering if there might be an odd
correlation there. You can write me off the list if you find anything
interesting.

I was thinking more of the next generation. If it's not in iTunes, they seem to
not notice. I've been trying to interest some of the younger folks in the
family but so far nothing. I've bought and handed out inexpensive SW recievers
to several people young and old who seemed interested but so far no further
interest. I guess you have to be interested in both history and a good mystery
to like this stuff. It's sad more of the kids out there just don't seem to
care.  Carry on everyone.  Glad you're all here.

Just caught the tail end of a clean (S9+ with good audio, no noticable

Ended at approx 21:53 UTC Dec 24th, 2016.

I have to say I'm sorry the Priyom site isn't kept up any further. The
scrolling station schedule is excellent but I have been listening to the now 6
year old podcasts wishing there were more of them, more current for those of us
getting started now.  I've watched a lot of bad Youtube videos on things like
the Buzzer and found a few good ones too.
One thing that would greatly be appreciated by a few of us (at least me
certainly) would be a revival of the podcasts. One thing lacking that would
have been very useful too is a printed version of the stations heard, times and
frequencies, such as Ary and the others put out here as part of the pages
description of the podcasts. Otherwise, for referrence one must listen to each
podcast with pen and paper and write down all the information given.  In any
case, the podcasts that are there give a great i sight into the details and
history of various signals. Sadly they are all years out of date, at least the
ones I have found.
Another thing would be a listing of who if any is concentrating on any one
station, frequency or time as it would allow the rest of us to schedule
specific times to listen to propogation appropriate stations that maybe aren't
being given as much focus. I have tried to find out how to send audio fikes to
Priyom but there is no info I have found to do so nor does there seem to be
anyone to contact with updates and additional info.  Is there a contact for
that site?  I would live to tell them I appreciate the site and encourage them
to keep at it or perhaps pass the torch on it.
One other thing is the IRC channel on Freenode for #priyom seems totally
abandon. I have attempted a few times now to get a response from anyone there
at various times and have not heard a peep from anyone. I am using the web
based portal on the Priyom main page to try to make contact. Should I be trying
someplace else? I havent used IRC in about 20 years.  It is quite possible I am
just not doing it right.
There is a trove of good info on several sites, I just mourn the lack of
updates from Priyom.  I will certainly shift my focus to the numbers and
oddities site now. I have been there but it's been a long time since I have had
a good look. If anyone sees this that was in the old poscasts, thanks for
those. I very much enjoy them.
Ary and everyone else, I very much enjoy your reports here. Thank you.

Just ask what you want to know.

Lots of newsletters, recordings and a logs database on
http://www.numbersoddities.nl
More info and daily skeds on http://priyom.org/number-stations/station-schedule

The logs database can be handy to check for possible skeds as many stations
tend to reuse old skeds.

Tried that but it was the very wee morning hours. According to the chat room,
lots of folks logged in but nobody answered several "hello"s but I'll keep at
it. Just ordered an SDRPlay that should be here in a day or two to play with.
The software and functions seem to be highly approved by most folks posting
about it. High value for the dollars is what I'm getting from the info online.
Still at it. More to come.

most of what I know by talking to them. Welcome to our weird hobby!

Hi all and thanks for the tips but most links I have found are either outdated
or a simple laundry list of frequencies or reports of catches.
http://priyom.org is a great place to keep up with what's being heard now as
well as being a record of past discoveries but I'm interested in suggestions on
software for diagnosing signal types, recommendations on receivers with
specific features or functionality old pros find functional. reports on various
listening stations would be great too.  I'm an Extra Class Amateur operator
with access to a goodly amount of listening gear but am looking to emulate
others paths that have found a good working solutions. Things like how the heck
do you guys listen to multiple frequencies and automate recordings effectivly,
antenna options for various living situations, etc. Most of that is standard
info for Amateur operators and follows known propagation schedules etc but it
never hurts to hear what others stations are like and how they work their gear
effectivly.
I'm not looking for any secret info, just a hint so I don't spend a frustrating
couple of years recreating your well oiled wheels.
I appreciate this list and all the sites suggested so far. I look forward to
anything else anyone can offer.
Thanks so much,Sean

Hello all. I have been interested in milcoms, pirate, clandestine and other
similar communications for many years and while I occasionally run into dated
listings of common frequencies I am wondering if there us an up to date site on
how best to monitor for these transmissions as well as good practices and
equipment suggestions?
Some of you seem to monitor an endless selection of frequencies at any given
moment. How many receivers do you operate, what types and antenna
recommendations and similar info would be appreciated. Feel free to contact me
off the list with suggestions and comments if you have time
at:mchenryp...@yahoo.com
I have a selection of receivers, mostly a little older but am willing to change
my gear as needed and budget allows.
Thank you,Sean
