RE: THE on XP Pro

2010-10-28 Thread David Blackwell
One of the key benefits of going to a 64-bit O/S is that it supports more than
4GB of memory. The memory addresses in a 32bit O/S max out at 4GB so even
though my home PC with Vista 32 bit has 4 GB of Physical RAM, it doesn't get to
use it all because when you subtract the addresses used by the 1 GB Videocard
RAM and other RAM using processes that need the addresses, I lose the ability
to use all the physical RAM I bought and installed in the motherboard. If I
had bought or converted to a 64 bit Vista O/S it would be able to address all
my RAM and give me more available RAM for programs I use.

Trevor,

Without understanding the tech details I do understand the overall
problem. I just thought the whole work-around was funny and typical of
how Microsoft just keeps patching and patching and the programs just
grow in size.

Re: THE on XP Pro

2010-10-28 Thread Trevor Spain
The primary problem is with 16 bit wide code. When running a 64 bit
operating system, the 64 bit processors can not run 16 bit code. When
running a 32 bit operating system 16 bit code is still supported.

What you're doing with Virtual PC is emulating a 32 bit operating system
as an application running on your 64 bit operating system so that you
can execute old 16 bit code with it.

Even some old 32 bit code programs used 16 bit code installers to save
floppy disk space. These programs could probably run if there was a way
to install them but the setup program won't run.

A virtualized XP is also a good place to try out programs downloaded
from the internet that you're not sure of. If it catches a virus,
delete the two or three virtual pc image files and restore your backup.
Of course, that doesn't work if you don't have a backup. Make sure and
backup the windows xp virtual pc image files after your clean installation.

Win7 will run on any PC that can run XP, for the most part. But you
need as much memory and processor speed as possible. We upgraded all
of our existing work stations before we made the change we've got a
minimum of 4GB of RAM on our machines now, up to 8GB on a couple of
them. But from here on out, our new computers are going to be
configured with ridiculous spec's, not only for the Win7 OS but for the
graphics required for Navis, MEP, Revit, etc., etc.

Vista or Win 7 Home Premium users who have a valid XP installation disk
can download Virtual PC 2007 free from microsoft. Then install XP under
Virtual PC for running old programs.

Of course, if a mission critical application takes this much trouble to

seem prudent to setup a virtual environment running "THE" under Virtual

RE: THE on XP Pro

2010-10-27 Thread David Blackwell
Windows XP Mode requires Win7 Pro or Ultimate OS.
I had to upgrade my home laptop PC [64-bit] OS from Home Premium to Pro
to get it so I can run old programs.
It is a free but big download from Microsoft and runs in its own virtual
environment and needs the other free download for Windows Virtual PC.

The Microsoft website addresses both programs here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/

This web article might also be helpful:

tle_skin;content

I did it myself, but I'm a PC geek and the former network, hardware, &
software guru at my old employer [an engineering consulting firm].
If you are sufficiently PC savvy you might be able to do it yourself,
too; otherwise, get your IT to look into it.

FIRST, you gotta buy a 64 bit machine, right? (g)

It ran fine for us that way. Now if you upgrade to Windows 7 ...

Right click on Desktop - New Shortcut
Browse to directory that contains the THE Program
Select the executable (.exe) file, usually THE##.exe
Assign an icon

and it should work from there.

If there are problems remaining (fonts, display box size) let me
know and I'll call you.

Good luck!
