Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS no longer converting 24-bit files to MP3

2017-08-13 Thread Michael Herger

It can be the same copy run twice. That would not work, as only one
process can use the ports being used by LMS.

I always have Activity Monitor running on my LMS server to show what is
happening within the system at any time. Only one instance of Perl is
shown running.

That's not real-time information. The second process could disappear
before it even showed up in the list.

The message about LMS running already is logged if there's a task
running using LMS' port (3483). As this port is reserved for LMS it's
highly unlikely any other task would use it.

try to investigate this kind of issue, always try to start as clean as
possible. Don't install plugins before the basics work. Try to run LMS
from the command line etc.

I'm only running a few 3rd party, but will pull them all and try again.
Screen capture is attached.

"A few"? That's more than I do ;-).

Did you try to run manually?

/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/Contents/server/slimserver.pl

Oh, one more thing: use 7.9.1, as there is a Mac specific issue in 7.9.0
(updater only, but still).

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Performance using network drive for music storage? (LMS running in virtual machine)

2017-08-13 Thread pippin

My setup is pretty similar and I’m quite happy about it.
It’s very flexible, especially if I want to set up a second server
instance for testing etc or when accessing the music from different
machines. My NAS also has RAID which makes handling disc faults and
upgrades easier.

The downside is that scans take longer but I don’t do these too often
and for everything else performance is normal, the music files are only
accessed for streaming, everything else runs in memory on the server
running LMS

Why not connect the SATA drive to the host as a VMFS datastore ?

A 4TB disk should be fine as a 4 (odd)TB datastore

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Performance using network drive for music storage? (LMS running in virtual machine)

2017-08-13 Thread itm

Does anyone know if there's a major performance hit if you use a network
storage device for your music?

I run LMS 7.9.0 on a Windows 2008 Server Virtual Machine, running on an
ESXi host. My music is stored on a 4TB NTFS-formatted SATA drive. I've
tried connecting this drive to the ESXi host machine in a couple of ways
(e.g. internally connected directly to the SATA controller, and
externally in a USB enclosure), and mapping it using RDM, but the VM
environment doesn't handle it well at all - the disk always becomes
corrupt after a relatively short period of time. Probably a hardware
compatibility issue between the drive (a WD Blue) and ESXi. Or maybe the
size of the drive is a problem for ESXi.

Anyway I'm now thinking of transplanting the drive to my Linux file
server in the loft, and pointing LMS at it from the Windows VM
downstairs, but wanted to get feedback on whether this is a good idea
before I embark on the whole process.

Any views?

When the Mac boots you can hold down Command-R to restore the OS via the
web from Apple. Since nothing is on DVD/CD any longer, this is how you
do a clean install. Before running the installer, I ran DiskUtility and
reinitialized the OS partition of my SSD. It was wiped clean then OS
10.12 was installed. Once that was done, I did a system update to OS
10.12.6, the most recent.

I've had this problem for several years, starting proll with LMS 7.5 or
earlier. Again, I did a totally clean OS install and a clean LMS
install, adding back some 3rd party plugins.

Thanks for the help, Michael. I will attach a screen capture of the
plugins I'm using, as well as a recent log.

If you're using Spotty, then you'll need to update LMS to the latest

VPN or SSH tunnelling. An open port would allow anyone on the internet
to install a plugin on your server. This plugin could potentially
install malware etc. You really don't want to leave the ports open.

I want to copy a URL from a playlist from Spotify to a Favorite in LMS.
But unfortunately it won't play. Some other Favorites I copied a long

Is there something changed in Spotify or LMS that explains the reason
for not working or do I need more instruction to use playlist from

Every suggestion is appreciated.

VPN tunnel . I use open vpn the play LMS in my car with iPeng ( iOS ) .

VPN is the only option . The password protection in LMS is not really
any security , people are as easily atacked with or without it.

Read the linked tread , LMS was/is not really designed to operate
against internet you simply should not have open ports .

I do think OpenVPN exist for android, you only have to have a router
that supports open vpn or similar or set up a vpn server some other way

Hi Marco,

Thanks very much for the pointers. I'm running in Linux and at the
moment have the folliwing convert.conf files:

# updatedb

# locate convert.conf
/etc/squeezeboxserver/convert.conf
/usr/share/perl5/Slim/Plugin/NetTest/custom-convert.conf
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins/CDplayer/custom-convert.conf
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins/Spotify/custom-convert.conf
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins/Spotty/custom-convert.conf

As the custom files are specific, looking at the one in /etc

Here's where the missing codec errors come from:

I did a 'restore' new install of 10.12 then it updated to 10.12.6 . I
have received errors of two LMS running, which is impossible as only one
was installed. Deleted ALL prefs twice to make sure old stuff was wiped
out. Perl v5.18. I'm wondering if I should update to a newer version,
but no one else seems to be complaining about this issue.

Another odd thing, if I go to the LMS Pref Pane and try to STOP the
server, it doesn't stop, but I think it's always been this way.

I'll PM Michael, too. For now everything seems to be working, except
I'm still getting MP3 encode errors and I'm not going to worry about it.
Will see what Michael says.

If you want Spotify via LMS then you are going to need to move it to new
hardware.

Easier solution. Close the port on your router.

Ronald I agree in that it only started happening to me too in the past 3
months... but... that's when I turned off the password on my LMS (which
by the way has port forwarding to the internet). I turned off the
password because I got an Echo Hub and the Alexa plugin for Squeezebox
(currently) requires you to disable your LMS password :-(

I don't think XP is supported by librespot (the code Spotty is built
with) or going to be. It is after all way beyond "end of life".

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Please help me fix this!!

2017-08-13 Thread wonder boy

Sorry for shouting, it's been a long time since I've been 'under the
hood' LMS and 5 players work well with Triode's spotify plugin. Went on
iPeng this morning and saw the flash up about the spotify plugin support
changing and to move over to spotty. Clicked to install spotty in the
repository and 'BOOM' LMS not worked since!

removed and reinstalled but wont work and comes up with the old
'possible software conflict' message. Running LMS on an old XP desktop
with no changes for a number of years.

Any suggestions appreciated.

2 Booms, 1 radio, a touch and an SB3...think that's enough?

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS no longer converting 24-bit files to MP3

2017-08-13 Thread bpa

Perl does not install with LMS - a version of Perl is included as part
of OS. LMS provides its some of required CPAN libraries.

If you upgraded the OS from say 10.x.x to 10.12.* - I guess there is a
possibility of some sort of incompatibility. If you upgraded from
10.12.x to 10.12.y - I'd guess unlikely to be a compatibility problem.

A PM to mherger might be useful just to check if there are any
"gotchas".
