Hi,
First Charlie, close but not a direct hit. We never seemed to have winds
over about 80 mph in that one, and those were rain band associated gusts. It
moved away quickly and things got back to normal soon. Only without
electricity for three and half days.
Naples was pretty much back to normal when we started buttoning down for
Frances.
Again Naples was spared a direct hit, but the pounding we are taking from
the bands are getting to be a little much. Wind gusts again up to 80 and
some very heavy rain squalls. So far the electric is still on - guess most
of the trees that were going to fall, fell during the first one. Have not
been able to contact the central Florida steamers yet, widespread power
outages up there. The creep, crawl, and stall tactics of Frances is really
taking a toll on the entire state. I 95 severed due to washout, and I75 on
our side has standing water in places. When Andrew came through a few years
back, it was rated a more severe storm for our area, but it went through
quickly and did not seem as bothersome as these two have been.
Manufactured housing sure took a beating in the last three weeks. Thousands
of them are scattered over the landscape. And it will happen again. You
can't accommodate affordably priced manufactured homes and hurricane proof
building codes!
One thing for sure, the steel shutters will stay up for a while. There's
another one about a week away headed on the same path! The good news
haven't seen snow in 22 years...
Keep your steam up!

The product is suppose to have a breakage point of 35,000 ft pounds. It
melts when the aluminum is at 728 degrees Fahrenheit. They so show engine
blocks being rebuilt, bar stock being welded both with butt joints and with
lap joints. You can heat the aluminum with a propane torch. It comes in
3/16 round, 12 long sticks.

Trot,

Around here (northeast) we use crushed limestone. The size of the aggregate
is less than 1/8 and looks very scale. More importantly, the limestone
dust semi hardens the stone when you wet it and it tends to stay put rather
well. Very inexpensive. 1 ton costs us $7.00. If you mix it with concrete
dust, you can have a permanent road bed that will not wash away. Very
stable and looks great!

I think we may be talking of two different things here. What is being
suggested, I think is, that if you start with hot water it will boil and
turn to steam much faster than if you start with cold water. It is then
possible to use up all your water before the fuel runs out - we're talking
about a loco here that doesn't have a fill valve on it.

If you use an air supply, what happens to the steam oil that is suppose to
get to the cylinders? There is no steam to condense to displace the oil,
wouldn't this mean that the cylinders are running without any lub. Bob

Hi Folks,

The survey is posted. If you would like to take part, please go to
http://home.twcny.rr.com/twinlakesrw and click on the survey link on the
left side. When I get enough responses, I will post the results and then
update it thereafter. Pass the word. I truly would like to see what my
peers are doing and what they want from future live steam offerings.

You can send in all the surveys you like, folks, It's how you vote with
your dollars/pounds/euros/yen that will determine future offerings.
Aster still has Colorado and Southern butane-fired Moguls for sale 12
years after their introduction. Accucraft still has electric 1:24

Aster and Accucraft will not ignore these lessons.

Chuck,
I'm confused about the objective. Surveying a group of us to find out what
we have is pretty useless info for a manufacturer. He already knows how
many he sold.

Surely a poll/vote for the model I'd most like to own would be more use?
If we, (a very interested party,) had a permanent list with votes attached
to each engine, then a manufacturer could get some idea what we (a small
specialist email group,) are interested in. Wouldn't it be nice to chop the
top item off the list because a manufacturer released it?

The obvious place to put it is on the sslivesteam home page. One could
suggest that separate categories for std gauge versus NG might make sense?
And maybe a $$ limit subcategory?

I vote for an EBT Mike in 1:20.3. Gas fired - if only because my other
engines already are! Less than $2500, like the Accu C-16.

RE: alcohol vs butane vs white gas/Ken Shattock Burner

2003-03-17 Thread Chuck Walters
Oxidation of primary alcohols produces aldehydes. Methyl alcohol will react
with hot copper(II) oxide to form formaldehyde. This reaction is especially
interesting because of the changes that can be observed in the copper(II)
oxide. Specifically the copper(II) oxide is converted to metallic copper
which is then returned to copper(II) oxide and the process repeats as long
as the copper(II) oxide/ copper metal remain hot. Which is why our wick
tubes don't disintegrate. The problem is that this reaction will only take
place in the presence of a strong oxidizing agent such as chromic anhydride,
CrO3 , in sulfuric acid; potassium dichromate in sulfuric acid; and
potassium permanganate, non of which are present. The upshot is that if
this reaction is taking place, the amounts of formaldehyde produced should
be at the trace level. However, safety always dictates to run engines in
well vetillated spaces.

Dave,

Pole or survey, I believe the results of such an instrument will show such
things as; what are the popular engine choices, what fuel is preferred, what
accesories are generally desired when buying an engine, etc. If I were a
manufacturer, I absolutely would want to know what my customers wanted. And
as a fellow modeler, I want to know what my peers think. So I do believe it
would be helpful.

And Terry G., why is a discussion about proper questions to be included in a
live steam survey, NON LIVE STEAM related? This I do not understand.

while i commend your willingness to go the extra mile to garner
hobbyists' viewpoints, what you are in fact building is a poll, not a
survey.

what you'll be able to say when you're done is that 73 percent of
those who chose to respond to the poll said gauge one locomotives
should have wheels spanning 45mm. you will not be able to say 73
percent of hobbyists said gauge one locomotives should ahve wheels
spanning 45mm.

my point has always been that none of the opinion-gathering
techniques detailed so far are scientific. self-selection -- i.e.,
going to a web site and answering questions or returning a postcard
-- skews the results.

i have actually written up a method of creating a (mostly)
statistically valid survey of our hobby, but decided that it is way,
way off topic (if anybody is interested, i'll send you the
explanation off-list), so i'm not posting it.

but maybe i'm wrong; maybe a poll of self-selected hobbyists has some
value and maybe i just don't see it.

This is the second winter. The original wood structure was built in the

the track is straight and true. So far, the floating pier system has proven

I have included a picture of the layout covered in a bit less snow in my

I have recently seen a picture of an elevated track which appears
to use conventional treated (one would assume) framing lumber or timber for
the supporting structure and Trex (or equivalent) synthetic wood plank
for the deck surface. The plank was cut into short sections the width of
the deck at whatever point and laid cross-wise with a small space between
each plank. The deck was edged by a continuous skirt, wood I suppose, and
the planks nestled very neatly between the skirts. Does anyone know whose
track this is or know of another similarly constructed track? The cost of
the synthetic plank might make this an expensive technique but the whole
thing looked really nifty AND weather resistant.

please don't refer to Australia as Oz.

John,

Will respect your wishes, but I know of several small scale live steamers
who belong to this list and others that refer to their location as OZ. Hard
to think of it as a derogatory term when the folks that live there use it
themselves.

John,
I have belonged to the www Model Engineering List for about ten years
which is populated by a number of Australians, all of whom regularly and
invariably refer to their location as Oz, I think more as an expedient
acronym as anything else, and none of them have ever mentioned that it
might be thought of as derisive. This isn't to say that you shouldn't,
that's for you to decide, but I was surprised to hear someone say that it
was. I thought of it as a rather lighthearted reference.

In anticipation of future traffic gains on the SWAMP RR, Mr. Lunkenheimer,
CFO, wishes to expand trackage and install a passing siding and a switching
yard. Is there a standard for the width of 1:20.3 locomotives? The switching
yard will probably only have a 1 clearance (actual, not scale) between car
sides.
Are there any standards for car widths in 20.3?

to celebrate, the operations crew fired up the frank s. and ran it

RE: Goodal Valve for RH Lady Anne

2002-08-16 Thread Chuck Walters

The RH water top up kits for the basic series engines are designed to attach
at the backhead. They are kits specific to the basic engines and are not
the usual Goodall type valve most of us are used to. It is a bolt on kit
where you remove the stock steam regulator and replace part of it with a new
collar that has the water top up attached and then put it back together with
the steam regulator. They would not work on Lady Ann without a lot of
modification. Norm Saley does all my conversions to Goodall valves. He
takes the boiler filler cap and drills it out and adds the valve. Very
simple, very quick. Extremely reasonable and excellent turn around time.

Odd Coincidence

2002-07-01 Thread Chuck Walters

I recently purchased a Hemmens Porter from a member of this listserv (an
awesome gentleman, by the way) and while waiting very anxiously for it's
arrival, I did a little web surfing, looking for pictures of the Porter. I
was then reminded of a thread that popped up last February on this list that
ultimately disclosed that Yesteryear Toys had a web page that stated they
were going to release a Porter in late 2000. I called said company only
to find out the Porter was not going to be done at all.

Low and behold, I went back to that same site today and saw that the
verbiage had been changed and now stated delivery for late 2002. Again a
phone call was placed to Yesteryear. This time, I was told the project is
on hold. Please notice, since 10:00 AM this morning, the verbiage under the
picture has been change to, Production schedule has not been finalized. I
also asked point blank, Is the Porter based on Max Hemmens designs? and
was told yes it was. In fact, the picture they have posted on their website
is unmistakably a MH Porter clone. So, there is hope for those looking
for a MH Porter. When, is uncertain. They also did say, they were going to
start selling the Cheddar Samson very soon.

Here is the web address for the picture and verbiage:

stroke
three weeks ago. I have visited him a few times, but since I have a late

He has VERY limited use of his left leg but he is able to move it slightly.
That is an improvement over the past two weeks. For those of you so

It's interesting that the 'blurb' written underneath the engine in the
Yesteryear website says production to begin in early 2000. Do they mean
2002 or did this project never get off the ground? I see a very distinct
resemblance to the Hemmens Porter in the picture also ;)

Speaking of Porters, has anyone any comments about this new Porter?

Tony:

I've been ordering books all along, they pulled in stocks from dealers in
England to satisfy our needs. As soon as I receive your check I'll order
them up.

Thanks.

Cheddar Iver

I noticed in one of the pics from DH that someone ran a Cheddar Iver there.
For those who went to DH, how did it run? What impressions did it give you?

Welcome to the list Les! Checked out your website. Looks like you could
make some serious live steamers in there! We certainly will gain from your
expertise in the field of metal work.

Newbie Introduction

I have no idea if this will get to the proper place but here goes.

I am 63 years old, close to retirement and have been a model
railroader (HOn3) for many years with a serious interest in home
machining for the last 20 years. I have no experience with live steam
railroading but have had a latent interest in it. My friend recently
purchased a Ruby and this has piqued my interest. A back yard
railroad is out of the question as my back yard is rather small and
my knees are terrible. My interests would be more related to
locomotive construction.

I do not wish to appear selfish but I hope lurking is permissible.
Having no experience in live steaming I cannot contribute much but
will have questions.

I have been reading some of the archives and this appears to be a
very informative group. I look forward to learning.
