Hi, First Charlie, close but not a direct hit. We never seemed to have winds over about 80 mph in that one, and those were rain band associated gusts. It moved away quickly and things got back to normal soon. Only without electricity for three and half days. Naples was pretty much back to normal when we started buttoning down for Frances. Again Naples was spared a direct hit, but the pounding we are taking from the bands are getting to be a little much. Wind gusts again up to 80 and some very heavy rain squalls. So far the electric is still on - guess most of the trees that were going to fall, fell during the first one. Have not been able to contact the central Florida steamers yet, widespread power outages up there. The creep, crawl, and stall tactics of Frances is really taking a toll on the entire state. I 95 severed due to washout, and I75 on our side has standing water in places. When Andrew came through a few years back, it was rated a more severe storm for our area, but it went through quickly and did not seem as bothersome as these two have been. Manufactured housing sure took a beating in the last three weeks. Thousands of them are scattered over the landscape. And it will happen again. You can't accommodate affordably priced manufactured homes and hurricane proof building codes! One thing for sure, the steel shutters will stay up for a while. There's another one about a week away headed on the same path! The good news haven't seen snow in 22 years... Keep your steam up! B. W. Lunkenheimer and Associate The SWAMP RR, Naples, FL.

The product is suppose to have a breakage point of 35,000 ft pounds. It melts when the aluminum is at 728 degrees Fahrenheit. Trot, Around here (northeast) we use crushed limestone. The size of the aggregate is less than 1/8 and looks very scale. More importantly, the limestone dust semi hardens the stone when you wet it and it tends to stay put rather well. Very inexpensive. 1 ton costs us $7.00. If you mix it with concrete dust, you can have a permanent road bed that will not wash away. Very stable and looks great! Chuck Twin Lakes Railway http://home.twcny.rr.com/twinlakesrw

Surveying a group of us to find out what we have is pretty useless info for a manufacturer. He already knows how many he sold. Surely a poll/vote for the model I'd most like to own would be more use? If we, (a very interested party,) had a permanent list with votes attached to each engine, then a manufacturer could get some idea what we (a small specialist email group,) are interested in. Wouldn't it be nice to chop the top item off the list because a manufacturer released it? The obvious place to put it is on the sslivesteam home page. One could suggest that separate categories for std gauge versus NG might make sense? And maybe a $$ limit subcategory? I vote for an EBT Mike in 1:20.3. Gas fired - if only because my other engines already are! Less than $2500, like the Accu C-16. Pete
RE: alcohol vs butane vs white gas/Ken Shattock Burner
Oxidation of primary alcohols produces aldehydes. Methyl alcohol will react with hot copper(II) oxide to form formaldehyde. This reaction is especially interesting because of the changes that can be observed in the copper(II) oxide. Specifically the copper(II) oxide is converted to metallic copper which is then returned to copper(II) oxide and the process repeats as long as the copper(II) oxide/ copper metal remain hot. Which is why our wick tubes don't disintegrate. The problem is that this reaction will only take place in the presence of a strong oxidizing agent such as chromic anhydride, CrO3 , in sulfuric acid; potassium dichromate in sulfuric acid; and potassium permanganate, non of which are present. The upshot is that if this reaction is taking place, the amounts of formaldehyde produced should be at the trace level. However, safety always dictates to run engines in well vetillated spaces. RE: Online Survey
Dave, Pole or survey, I believe the results of such an instrument will show such things as; what are the popular engine choices, what fuel is preferred, what accesories are generally desired when buying an engine, etc. If I were a manufacturer, I absolutely would want to know what my customers wanted. And as a fellow modeler, I want to know what my peers think. So I do believe it would be helpful. And Terry G., why is a discussion about proper questions to be included in a live steam survey, NON LIVE STEAM related? This I do not understand. My Best, Chuck Charles W. With that said, and in the hopes that the results of such a survey would be valuable to a few manufacturers, I have created a shell for an online survey that allows for anonymity and report ability. It is my intention that the results will be shared with as many manufacturers as possible, here on the listserv and reported in Steam in the Garden. Maybe someone will take notice. What I need from this illustrious group is a list of questions that you would like to see on the survey. If possible, please make the questions geared toward check box answers. Hi Phil, This is the second winter. The original wood structure was built in the summer of 01'. As a matter of fact, I was just out there surveying the layout. Other than some Aristo switch machines not working (I am converting everthing to Sunset Valley throws this Spring), the layout is dead flat and the track is straight and true. So far, the floating pier system has proven to work in our area. At one point this winter, even the high side of the track (which is five feet off the ground) was buried under Old Man Winter. The RH water top up kits for the basic series engines are designed to attach at the backhead. They are kits specific to the basic engines and are not the usual Goodall type valve most of us are used to. It is a bolt on kit where you remove the stock steam regulator and replace part of it with a new collar that has the water top up attached and then put it back together with the steam regulator. They would not work on Lady Ann without a lot of modification. Norm Saley does all my conversions to Goodall valves. He takes the boiler filler cap and drills it out and adds the valve. I hope that someone can help me at the steam-up. Odd Coincidence
I recently purchased a Hemmens Porter from a member of this listserv (an awesome gentleman, by the way) and while waiting very anxiously for it's arrival, I did a little web surfing, looking for pictures of the Porter. I was then reminded of a thread that popped up last February on this list that ultimately disclosed that Yesteryear Toys had a web page that stated they were going to release a Porter in late 2000. I called said company only to find out the Porter was not going to be done at all. Low and behold, I went back to that same site today and saw that the verbiage had been changed and now stated delivery for late 2002. Again a phone call was placed to Yesteryear. This time, I was told the project is on hold. Please notice, since 10:00 AM this morning, the verbiage under the picture has been change to, Production schedule has not been finalized. I also asked point blank, Is the Porter based on Max Hemmens designs? and was told yes it was. In fact, the picture they have posted on their website is unmistakably a MH Porter clone. So, there is hope for those looking for a MH Porter. When, is uncertain. They also did say, they were going to start selling the Cheddar Samson very soon. Here is the web address for the picture and verbiage: http://www.yesteryeartoys.com/cgi-local/toycatalog.cfm?view=Porter My Best, Chuck Charles W. Dee Parts
Fellow Steamers, My intentions on building a DEE have met with a snag. Actually, to many irons in the fire and no time in the fore seeable future to build her. In any case, I have a new full set of wheel castings and axle guards (two guards came slightly damaged, but Harry says they can be easily fixed) as offered by Harry Wade and a set of frames as offered by Jim Curry. I will depart with them for $125.00 plus shipping. If interested, drop me an email off list. My Best, Chuck Charles W. Walters Twin Lakes Railway CEO http://home.twcny.rr.com/twinlakesrw

I have visited him a few times, but since I have a late season cold have not spent much time there, and stayed a good distance from Abe. I spent about a half hour with Abe Joan at the hospital today and I'm pleased to report that he is able to carry on a very limited conversation (mostly about trains and very short words) but is unable to use his left arm. He has VERY limited use of his left leg but he is able to move it slightly. That is an improvement over the past two weeks. For those of you so inclined, a little intervention from a higher authority would be appreciated. Keep your steam up! Walt
C-16 differences

RE: Porter
I wrote to Yesteryear Toys and asked about the Porter. this was their reply: The Porter was a prototype model and has not been scheduled for production. The locomotive models currently available are located under the Yesteryear Toy Shop section. Thank you for your time and interest. Too bad! If it was indeed based on Maxwell Hemmens design, I would have ordered one. Chuck Walters Twin Lakes Railway CEO http://home.twcny.rr.com/twinlakesrw
RE: Porter
It's interesting that the 'blurb' written underneath the engine in the Yesteryear website says production to begin in early 2000. Do they mean 2002 or did this project never get off the ground? RE: Bio
Welcome to the list Les! Checked out your website. Looks like you could make some serious live steamers in there! We certainly will gain from your expertise in the field of metal work. Chuck -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Les Grenz (by way of Dave Cole) Sent: Thursday, January 03, 2002 8:10 AM To: Multiple recipients of sslivesteam Subject: Bio Newbie Introduction I have no idea if this will get to the proper place but here goes. I am 63 years old, close to retirement and have been a model railroader (HOn3) for many years with a serious interest in home machining for the last 20 years. I have no experience with live steam railroading but have had a latent interest in it. My friend recently purchased a Ruby and this has piqued my interest. A back yard railroad is out of the question as my back yard is rather small and my knees are terrible. My interests would be more related to locomotive construction. I do not wish to appear selfish but I hope lurking is permissible. Having no experience in live steaming I cannot contribute much but will have questions. I have been reading some of the archives and this appears to be a very informative group. I look forward to learning. Regards, Les Grenz Denver, CO http://www.lesgrenz.homestead.com/Leshomepage.html
