Modification Inside Frame, Safety Valve with Whistle, Contact in Montreal
I intend to buy Lady Anne from Roundhouse. I would prefer her with an inside frame so that I can see the complete wheels. Besides, I would like to see the excess steam to exit through a whistle soldered onto the safety valve. Has anyone experience with these modifications and could refer me to someone who could do it. What are the parts of a slide valve and piston valve, how do they work? All I know is that slide valves are superior because you can easily fix leaks in the seals. Is there anywhere information on the web (descriptions, drawings, etc.)? It seems that there are no 45mm live steam enthusiasts in Montreal or close by. I would appreciate to see a loco in operation before I buy my first one. Regards, Matthias __ Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! RE: Modification Inside Frame, Safety Valve with Whistle, Contact in Montreal
I have never heard of anyone doing this. A whistle is a restricted outlet and putting one on the exhaust of a safety valve defeats some of its effectivity. The safety valve serves an important purpose and better left alone to do its job. Besides you could have an annoying constantly whistling loco after while. I would put more effort and money into a whistle that has a dedicated outlet either R/C or manually controlled. Has anyone experience with these modifications Matthias, Although it certainly could be done, I doubt the cost could be justified. Everything from the top of the chassis down would have to be redone to convert to inside frames. What are the parts of a slide valve and piston valve, how do they work? There are too many parts to go into here, for instance the Walschaerts gear (a variation of which the Lady Anne has) has no less than 49 variable points/values in the cylinders and chassis. There have been countless publications on the subject of valve gears in the last 150 years, ranging from a few pages to volumes as thick as my forearm and a few of them have been written specifcally on designing valve gears for model engines. Most valve gears have the same purpose, to derive the motion to drive the valves from the cranlkshaft and there are dozens of valve gear designs and any one of them can drive either a piston or slide valve. Whether or not piston valves are superior to slide valves or vice versa is conditional, each has its place, based upon size and application. But generally speaking in miniature practice, especially as the scale gets smaller (and we're near the bottom), slide valves are preferrable (although not necessarily superior) to piston valves because they are simpler to make and keep steam tight. seals. Is there anywhere information on the web (descriptions, drawings, etc.)? For starters try this site: http://www.tcsn.net/charlied/ This will show overall animated illustrations of all the better known motions. For specific descriptions and details of the valves themselves you'll need to find texts or magazine articles and if you have a decent public library or university you ought to be able to find information there. You can of course go to www.google.com and type in locomotive valve gears and sort through the 1000's of entries that come up, most of which will refere to books and publications. You may want to just think about opening up the frame some. You may have to attach some structural support if you take away too much though. If this is your first foray into Live Steam, a lot of people try the Accucraft Ruby 0-4-0. It is fairly cheap, has a simple stephenson type valve system, is inside framed, and lends itself well to cosmetic and some operational modifications. Cliff and others at customer support has been very helpful and a lot of web sites offer hints on running and modifying it. I intend to buy Lady Anne from Roundhouse. I am a bit baffled by this last Matthias :-) - if you had a whistle somehow cobbled onto the safety valve then would it not sound all the time the safety was blowing??? Normal practice is to fit whistle valve with a whistle between the frames and use a servo to use the whistle when required. What are the parts of a slide valve and piston valve, how do they work? I would appreciate to see a loco in operation before I buy my first one. Suggest subscribing to Steam in the Garden and joining the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers. These sources will provide access to local live steamers (if any) and will in any case provide a wealth of information. The modifications you suggest would require a significant knowledge and skill to undertake and I would personally prefer to start from scratch rather than alter a rather expensive Lady Anne. You could of course purchase a Lady Anne kit and modify that. Yours Aye Tag Gorton Longlands Western Railway Trematon office Cornwall
