Re: Jakarta Commons Lib ... and Struts

2002-09-05 Thread Ted Husted

Alot of frameworks do MVC, but what Struts does particularly well is
help you integrate the various Java technologies into a coherent whole.
A key point behnind Struts is that it is not trying to reinvent any
wheels. It provides the axels so we can use the wheels we already got.

Strut is by no means intended to be a one-stop solution. If anything,
it's meant to be a jumping off point into all the other technologies
Java has to offer.

One of the first things the infamous MailReader example does is create
its own custom tag. Not because it really ~needs~ to, but because we're
trying to show you its OK to roll your own.

Struts does play well with the Jakarta Taglibs, as well as any others
you care to name, including the new standard JSTL.

Struts also plays well with JAAS, DataSources, EJBs, and so forth.
Struts is positioned as a facilitator to help you use the rest of the
Java technologies and toolkits. So its less like Wal-Mart and more like
the landlord of a virtual mall. We provide the kiosk so you can stock
with whatever goodies you need.

Re: Jakarta Commons Lib ... and Struts

2002-09-04 Thread John Yu

Neal,

Are you referring to Jakarta-Commons or Jakarata-Taglibs?

(1) Struts uses Jakarta-Commons internally.

(2) Struts' taglibs do overlap with JSTL in Jakarta-Taglibs. Long term
direction of Struts is to migrate to JSTL and deprecate the current
taglibs. Mid term solution is to provide a bridge. An effort is underway to
accomplish this. (Search for "Struts-EL" on the "struts-dev" list.)

Struts provides much, but I don't think it's intended to be a
one-stop-shop solution.

If my understanding is correct, some of the commons projects (digester,
beanutils, and maybe logging) started out as part of Struts and were
split off into separate projects.

I have only just started using the Commons packages with Struts, but Craig
strongly recommends combining the technologies.

I am new and still pondering whether to use Struts or not.

I am aware of the MVC pattern as a reason to use Struts but am curious to
know how it's funcitonality libraries and wrappers compare. Does Struts
provide similar functionality to those libraries found in the Jakarta
commons libs? Commons offers some pretty sweet stuff.

Does anyone use Commons/Jakarta taglibs along side of Struts .. or does
Struts intend to be a one-stop-shop sort of solution?

Thanks.
