A Resin license costs $500 (not $1500)

how much does it cost to hire a consultant for a day? That is where the big
money goes when projects are happening, people.

Obviously $1500 is a lot to you and me but compare that to about $15,000 for
something like Websphere. Pretty cheap huh? $1500 doesn't even make the
radar at a corporation (basically free).

RE: [OT] Container Wars

2002-10-08 Thread Joe Barefoot

Wow, thanks for the links. One very crucial bit of information missing in these
benchmarks (unless my spectacles mislead me) is that there is no mention of JSP
compilation. This leads me to assume that each page was hit first on the respective
containers to compile the JSPs, then the benchmark tests conducted. The problem I
have with this is that you are really testing two things: How 'smart' the particular
JSP compiler is, and how well the container services requests.

With that in mind, the Jasper2 JSP compiler available with Tomcat 4.1.x offers
optimizations in the generated code that purportedly increase page response by 400% or
better. I've observed with my own peepers that it is several times faster, though I
have no BS (cough, I mean, 'benchmarks') to offer.

So maybe the article should be retitled: "Was Tomcat Crap?"
If you've looked at the code the original Jasper generates, you might be inclined to
say 'yes'.

Also: "Lies! Damned lies, and statistics!" :)

2002-10-08 Thread Kevin . Bedell

theserverside.com hosted a pretty lively thread on exactly this debate late
last May. It started when Mike Cannon-Brookes posted an article "Is Tomcat
Crap?" that featured performance benchmarks like:

"First, here's some raw performance statistics to consider:
  Orion 1.5.3: 0.045s (45 milliseconds) - 444 pages/sec - 1.6 million/hour
  Resin 2.0.4: 0.065s (65 milliseconds) - 307 pages/sec - 1.1 million/hour
  Weblogic 6.1: 1.15s (1,150 milliseconds) - 17.4 pages/sec - 62,640/hour
  Tomcat 4.0.1: 3.3s (3,300 milliseconds) - 6 pages/sec - 21,600/hour"

 - statistics quoted from "Is Tomcat Crap?",
http://radio.weblogs.com/0107789/stories/2002/05/28/isTomcatCrap.html

Following this one of the liveliest discussions on this topic I that I remember

I've been using Resin for about 2-1/2 years now, and am very happy with it.
The latest version has all sorts of goodies in it, my current favourite
being a built-in fast implementation of JSTL. I haven't run into any
limitations from Resin itself, although I've run into the "too many tags on
a page" limit, which is actually a JVM limitation that you'll run into on
almost all containers. Perhaps that's what you were thinking of?

I don't consider cost a downside. Sure, Tomcat is free, but $1500 (last time
I looked - we've already licensed it) isn't much to pay, for all that you
get with Resin.

Yep yep, I agree, people do chase those picoseconds sometimes. ;) In this case, there
really is a performance issue to be addressed with high-volume sites regarding EJB
calls. Apparently the creators of the EJB 1.1 spec didn't think about that when they
were locked behind closed doors and throwing specifications out through the mail slot.
:)

peace,

Joe - Thanks for explaining. I've seen so many people make decisions based

Because w/ the internal connector, all EJB calls are in-VM. With a created JNDI
context, all EJB calls go on the network call stack unless you are using EJB 2.0 local
interfaces AFAIK.

yes. esp. on windows machines where the network call stack implementation is not so
speedy.

Not if choosing the "best" container results in a substantially slower
applicationwhich is very possible when the EJB calls start "bottle-necking" on the
call stack during high traffic...with low traffic, you probably wouldn't notice a
difference.

RE: [OT] Container Wars - Resin and sessions

2002-10-08 Thread Joe Barefoot

Why would this option exist in the first place? It should automatically do
URL-rewriting if per-session cookies are disabled by the client browser.

RE: [OT] Container Wars - Resin and sessions

2002-10-08 Thread Kevin . Bedell

Why is having an internal connector better than simply creating a JNDI/
initial context on your own? Is the speed that much better? It's not
really too hard to simple set your jndi.properties directly and connect
that way. Not trying to put your decision down, just wondering if I've
missed something...

Seems like choosing the best container would outweigh this connectivity
issue...

RE: [OT] Container Wars - Resin and sessions

2002-10-08 Thread Jeff_Mychasiw

Some how I assume that you did not need to configure each webapp in the
conf file. (I guess I am just lazy).

Anyway I noticed that the default web app had the session settings so I
just copied the default web app and named it to our app.

This worked and it does appear faster than even tomcat 4.1.12 (using the
netscape browser timer).

The interesting thing is that Resin found a stray in my html
and it gave a fairly readable error as well.
Tomcat has not complained about it.

If it will auto copile my java classes as it states, I think I may continue
developing with Resin.

We are going live with JBoss/Tomcat because of the internal connectors. If
a JBoss connector existed for Resin that my change things.

Thanks for the help.

I have tomcat and resin using the same webapps directory, and I can run
my apps using either container. There's no problem with sessions that I
experience.

trying to be all things to J2EE, and failing! Version 4 might be better, but
bad experiances have scared me off for good!

It is one of them things were money does the talking. JRun have paid to
lisence the J2EE technology and can plaseter the logo all over their

the spec.

But then this is just me ranting and raving like the mad man I am!

RE: [OT] Container Wars

2002-10-08 Thread Darren Hill

I've been using JBoss 3.x / Jetty for a while now. No complaints. Should I
be worried about something?

Have you used JRun 4, it is stable and quite fast.

I like tomcat, but it is my understanding that the JSP compiler still leaks
memory. I don't like to have to worry about precompiling my jsp pages.

IMHO, NO, NO, NO!

RE: [OT] Container Wars - Resin and sessions

2002-10-08 Thread Jeff_Mychasiw

We are using tomcat 4.04 and have tried 4.1.12 with out problems.
When I drop my working Struts app into Resin 2.1.5 it seems that it does
not keep the session.
(I can login, place a user bean in session then the next action looks for
that bean and when null, kicks us of the app)
I have not looked any deeper but I guess I expected it to deploy the same
way it does in Tomcat.
