Since the purchased ebook is not encrypted to constrain the printing, it
will open up in Acrobat 4 reader too.

Hi Geeta,

The PDF was created using Adobe PDF 5 standard and using the encryption
to disable printing.
All Adobe PDF 5 files open in Adobe 4, except the encrypted ones.
There lies the problem...
You have to use Acrobat Readers 5 and above

Re: STRUTS BOOK

2002-09-06 Thread Ted Husted

In WebDev/Struts, we were very careful to mark all the Struts 1.1
material. The goal was to make the text accessible to Struts 1.0.x
developers (which are still legion) as well as Struts 1.1 developers,
and to help people move from one to other.

This approach will also make it easier to publish updates on any details
that change between the betas and Struts 1.1 final.

Can't say about Ted's, but Chuck states specifically that his text is based
on "1.1 beta" and James' states on page 59, simply "1.1" (which I think is a

Re: STRUTS BOOK

2002-09-06 Thread chuckcavaness

Kirby,

  I can only speak about my book, but I would suspect
the one from Ted and the gang is the same, is all about
1.1. Fortunately for developers using 1.0, backwards
compatability was one of the goals of 1.1 and those
forced to use 1.0 will still find great value in these
books. I'm not sure about the others, however.

Question.. are any of the three books, husted, chuck, or james written
TO version 1.1? Amazon doesn't give details on any of the three, and
Ted's page mentions a chapter that talks about 1.1, but I'm wondering
if anything is out there yet that is actually written from the core up
to use 1.1. My guess is that it is too early for such a beast, but I

I'm sure there is going to be some overlap, but I really
think that because we (Ted, James Goodwill, James Turner
and Kevin Bedell, Sue and myself) all come from a
slighly different background and have different
experiences, the various Struts soon available will
complement each other nicely.

Re: [STRUTS BOOK]

2002-09-06 Thread Ted Husted

The Introduction was one of the trickier parts of the book for us. The
publisher kept saying the original first chapter wasn't the beginning.
We were starting with Struts, but they wanted to start sooner than that.
They also wanted a hands-on Struts example in the first chapter. I had
no idea how to do all that in a single first chapter. Then George
Franciscus came to the rescue with a very tightly written introductory
chapter. It covers the basics of the underlying technologies and then
leaps right into a working Struts application!

The "trick" George came up for the example was to include the prebuilt
classes in the download. That way, we didn't have to get into the build
issues before showing people what it is "like" to develop in Struts.

In fact, the new "Enabling Technologies" section of the Struts User
guide grew out of the work we did with our own chapter 1. Of course,
ours has more text than hyperlinks (but that's what you have to do in
print).

We'll be posting the Tiles and Validator chapters as our book examples
Real Soon Now. Of course, Cedric and David drafted those. We decided to
post these two since Tiles and Validator and the least documented parts
of the framework right now. As example chapters, we will be able to keep
them up indefinitely.

So this explanation should make it a little clearer what I was saying.

In Java primitive cannot be passed by reference so six months ago
in a possibly now defunct project I wrote a Java ``Union'' class.

class RefValUnion {

  String stringVal;
  int  intVal;
  float floatVal;
  double doubleVal;
  Date dateVal;
  BigDecimal  decimalVal;
  ...

}

In this project I used a master or superclass base action form
to add validation and other extended functionality
For instance I created all the utility date validation
and financial input validation routines in this class

class SuperActionForm extends ActionForm {
 boolean validateDate( String input, RefValUnion refval )
 {
...
 }

 boolean validateBigDecimal( String input, RefValUnion refval )
 {
...
 }

}

I created ActionForms for the project that extended the master
like this one below. In the validate method I used the
validate method in the super class to check the user input.
All the validate methods return boolean value true or false.
If the result is false then the validation failed
otherwise the validation is successful.
Almost all of the validate methods perform some conversion,
the result is saved inside the reference value union
`RefValUnion' this can be used by programmer.

class CalcTaxActionForm extends SuperActionForm {

 String amountText;
 BigDecimal amount;

 public String getAmountAsText( ) {}
 public void setAmountAsText( String ) {}

 public BigDecimal getAmount() {}
 public void setAmount( BigDecimal ) {}

 ...

 public ActionErrors validate(
HttpServletRequest request, ActionMapping mapping )
 {
ActionErrors errors = new ActionErrors();

// Check user ``tax'' input. I create a reference value
// union

RefValUnion refVal = new RefValUnion();
if ( validateBigDecimal( amountText, refVal )) {
// Conversion worked. The validate method
// saved the conversion result in the union
// so I can use it.
amount = refVal.decimalVal;
}
else {
// Otherwise conversion failed. As normal add a new
// error method to the collection and continue
errors.add( new ActionError( ... ));
}

// More validation here.

return errors;
 }

}

I think too fast for my typing hands sometimes.

The fact is that David Winterfeld's ``Validator'' could have perhaps
saved me from the developing the validate methods in the
super class several months ago. Damn! That is why pick on it
as soon as I saw the chapter 11 uploaded into the
TheServerSide.com. It looks very useful and since the ``Validator''
can validate any JavaBean, then it gave me the idea to use it
against an Enterprise JavaBean or if it can work with mapped
property types then inside the Expresso Framework against a DBObject.

Cool! I hope understood better

Struts validator chapter 11 is a good overview for a piece of
complicated kit.

I would suggest that new developer try to write their own validation
with Java in a standard ActionForm before jumeping in the validator
in a first project. You should also say that it possible to write
a validation in Java utility class, and then use that across
ActionForm. The other solution is create a master superclass ActionForm for
your own project that has all the validation code in it. Subclassers
can then use the validation methods.

SuperActionForm extends ActionForm {
Date validateDate( String ) {  }
}

The discussion of the DynaValidationForm and DynaValidationActionForm
was a little unclear on first reading.

Also the ${var:minlength} and ${minlength} needs explanation in the
sample XML for the CheckoutForm. I see you have tried to explain this
in the text ?

The XML does appear very complicated for a beginner or a user especially
during the  tags.

You can declare constant tag in the XML files, but you did not explain
why this is useful? You should say that it allows reference to the same
regexp that is used multiple times in the formset tag content.

I think you should give a little side bar on "overview of regular
expressions". If you find there is too many text, then the section
you should regulate using the Validator without Struts to additional
resources on a web sites.

In the part "Using JavaScript with the validator" is the JavaScript template
definition in the CDATA section required for each and every validator rule.
Do you just write one rule with JavaScript inside it?

In "Internationalising the Validator", it would help if you explained what
each formset was effectively doing. The default locale formset is
validates the frist name and the French locale validates the last name.
Is there a reason that the validation is not different and not the same.

Anyway it was a good read.

Chuck,

you are perfectly right. I have it defined in my web.xml and DTD says that
it must be defined. Sorry for the wrong feedback. Anyway I am reading the
book and is really worth.

Regards,

Adolfo,

   It is required according to the DTD and the source code, because there
is not default specified. However, I think I may know how it's working for
you. I'm just guessing here however. Do you have the properties file
specified in the web.xml? Version 1.1 supports backwards-compatibility with
1.X and it will still load the message resources from the web.xml for the
default application. It may be getting the message resources for the
default application from there. Take a look at the
defaultMessageResourcesConfig() method in the ActionServlet class. There's
a note that this will be removed in a later release.

This might be how it's not breaking for you, I'm not really sure. I didn't
see anywhere a default message bundle name is being set. Maybe we're
looking at different versions?

Re: Struts book

2001-12-26 Thread Dick Starr

George:

Here is a recent posting from Vic regarding his book. It is available from
www.atlasbooks.com/marktplc/00670.htm for $49.00 and is expected in their
warehouse 1/4/2002 (no books have shipped yet); it will be available from
Amazon somewhat later. I have ordered it and will report my opinion once I
receive it. I did buy "Professessional JSP 2nd Edition" published by Wrox
and available from www.bookpool.com (a great place to buy technical books).

Sincerely:

Dick Starr

I will take the blame for Atlas. Their real price is $49 and retro
active, so you (and others) should see that on your credit bill, but I
can't help much, no mater how much I want. I went with them since they
promised 10 day print. They will ship it before Amazon. I hope you like
the book when you get it. It is a programmer book, but this book bus. is
not what I do as you can tell. My intention was to get out something
timely, but imperfect (as per "Cathedral and Bazaar") and expose it to
day light.

Vic
(my 2nd edition will be with a major publisher, and more writers/editors
(based on my public training) due in 8 months. and I will have a lot
less control, but hopefully they know what they are doing. At this time,
I do not think I will re-print this version of book, so quantity is
going to be limited, less then 800 at this time) :-[

I heard that someone published a struts book.
Has anyone had a chance to read it -- How does it compare to on-line
documentation?

Thanks

It is good to hear that Atlas will be crediting my credit card for the difference.
That does make me feel a bit better about the situation.

I'll have to look into whether or not we recieved that credit [or the original charge]
on the card yet.

RE: Struts book on Amazon ...

2001-12-18 Thread Nathan Anderson

Vic,

Amazon seems to be charging $59.95 not $80 like expected. I'm not about to
change my order from Atlasbooks.com, but all of this mis-information is
starting to wear me thin. I can understand why you expected atlasbooks to
ship much sooner than they will, but now with Amazon being cheaper and a
similar shipping date.. it's starting to make you look pretty bad. I really
hope that this book meets my expectations.. I am glad to hear that the
"editorial review" from Amazon sounds pretty close to what I have been
expecting.

(easier to order)

but the publisher will ship it much sooner and they "should" charge $10
less from:
http://www.atlasbooks.com/marktplc/00670.htm
but ordering from them could be a challenge, according to the posts. I
have asked them to improve it, and they said they would.

Some reviews at news.basebeans.com : mvc programmers.
