2020-08-20 Thread James Cameron
GSoC has given Work Product Submission Guidelines;
https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/help/work-product

As an option, students working on Sugar Labs projects may also
contribute to our GSoC repository as follows;

https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC

2.  create a folder 2020 here;

https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/tree/master/archives

3.  create a folder for yourself;

4. create files with your work product,

5.  link to the files from the idea list;

https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2020.md

6. commit the changes and make a pull request, or push direct to the
repository if you have permission.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Community Bonding Period

2020-05-27 Thread James Cameron
By 31st May we are to remove any students who "have not been actively
involved in the community bonding period".

Mentors: assess the student for community bonding, and let me know
whether to keep students or remove them. An early start to coding
with good progress is sufficient even if bonding hasn't worked yet,
but is not ideal. Thanks to mentors who have answered already.

Students: if the only person you are talking to at Sugar Labs is your
mentor, then you should talk to more people. If you are unsure, ask
your mentor how to do this.

Community members and unassigned mentors: get involved. Listen for
students and answer them. Look at what the students are doing and
test their work. Especially do this if you hope to be a mentor next
year.

I've been sending the students a scoreboard for bonding behaviours,
but that has stopped now. I hope it has been helpful.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Sugar team meeting 11-May-20

2020-05-13 Thread James Cameron
Thanks for the summary, Shaan. You did well, it was a long meeting.
Other things that I mentioned were;

- check that you are subscribed to the pkg-sugar-devel@
  https://alioth-lists.debian.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-sugar-devel

- although this is a GSoC 2020 project for Sugar Labs, much of what
you do will be recorded in Debian Project resources, like bug
trackers and mailing lists; so keep me informed,

- roles and responsibilities of a GSoC mentor, I'm glad to say, do not
  include training and teaching you in the technology you'll be using;
my experience with Debian packaging is quite limited, so often
  I'll need you to engage with Debian Project resources and people;
and let me watch and learn,

- there's no coordination, so do not be surprised if someone in the
Debian Project fixes a problem before you had planned to do so,

2020-05-11 Thread shaansubbaiah.c...@bmsce.ac.in
We met at 12:30 pm IST using Zoom.

We had James, Jui, Saumya, and Shaan.

James clarified Shaan's queries regarding the development environment to be
used, what exactly was expected of his project, that it would primarily involve
the testing of previously created packages.

James spoke about the Debian Activity packages that have already been created
and require testing.

James explained the life cycle of a Debian package release and gave us an
overview of the Debian Sugar repositories and the Debian package lists at
packages.debian.org.

James also spoke about a few intricacies involved in packaging and how the
various Linux Distributions handle it differently.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Help Needed

2020-05-08 Thread James Cameron
Students are starting to get involved. This is great. But also a
problem.

We need Sugar Labs members and others to step up and join in.
Discuss issues. Review pull requests. Test releases. Read daily
reports. Make comments. Report problems.

In other words, be part of your open source software community.

1. be involved in mailing list discussion,

2. find the repositories and click to watch them, read the
notifications and respond on GitHub,

3. find our students on GitHub and watch their activity,

4. query GitHub for open pull requests created by the students,

5. join any of the chats being used.

You don't need to be a mentor to do this, and arguably it is better
that you aren't. Our mentors are assigned to mentor, and time spent
doing these things can be time lost from helping or teaching the
student [1].

Especially get involved if you are a backup mentor who is not actively
teaching, or the mentors who were not chosen because of our slot
allocation.

We had a discussion on how to start the community bonding period , and how
should we summarize meeting for mailing list, we finalized our weekly
meeting time, and on an ui feature, exams.

   1. Previous weeks task: none
   2. Problems in previous week tasks: none
   3. Tasks for upcoming week: exploring and researching the important

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Sugar team meeting

2020-05-06 Thread James Cameron
We met at 5pm IST using Zoom.

We had James, Rahul, Jui, Saumya, and Shaan.

We introduced ourselves.

James spoke about what the meeting is for, when and how we should
meet, how we should defer technical problems to GitHub or mailing
list, and how we should summarise the meeting for the mailing list,

James spoke about how the community bonding period is also for us to
check the students can and will contribute, and that students should
tell their mentors if they are having problems with that.

We spoke about changed exam schedules, and that we'd share them once
they are known.

We spoke about starting coding early to compensate for losing time to

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Mentoring starts, Community Bonding Period

2020-05-05 Thread James Cameron
Welcome to the Community Bonding Period. This is a long post.

Students; please continue to participate, make pull requests, raise
issues, test software, in any limited time you have available.

For more on what you can do, see my other post;
http://lists.sugarlabs.org/archive/sugar-devel/2020-May/058272.html

Mentors; reach out to your student, and start mentoring. Tell them
what you are expecting them to do during the community bonding period.
Teach them to be a part of your community, and to communicate
effectively and in the open.

Please CC or BCC gsoc2020ad...@sugarlabs.org to keep org admins
informed.

Please CC or BCC your backup mentors to keep them informed.

Backup mentors; please watch for mentors who stop, or students who
aren't getting answered, then step in.

Now, I'm one of your org admins. Mentors are to keep me informed of
their availability, expectation of interaction, any loss of capacity,
any or issues with your student (communication, activity, visibility,
progress, plagiarism, harassment, fraud, or bad fit), and how well
their student is participating.

As an org admin, my responsibilities are to Google, mentors, and
students.

Org admin responsibility to our students;

- students contact org admin by writing to
  gsoc2020ad...@sugarlabs.org,

- my hours are 2:30am to 1:30pm IST, Monday to Friday, IST, and Walter
  between 4:30pm and 8:30am IST,

- if needed we may contact you back using other methods, like IRC,
WhatsApp, Skype, Jitsi, Zoom, or Hangouts,

- we will contact students as a group using the gsoc2020students@
alias, and via sugar-devel@ mailing list, (you may get duplicates),

- licensing; small changes should be assigned to the copyright owner
of the work you are changing; large changes should acquire your
copyright, and if no license is present you should add one of the
open source licenses we use; please ask your mentor or myself for
  details,

- visibility; you need to be visible to us, and we need to see you
working somehow, via GitHub, mailing list, or private mail,

- failure; during the community bonding period we will fail a student
if (a) there is no interaction, or not enough interaction with our
community, (b) there is no demonstrated capacity to work, even in
the limited time you have available,

- participant agreement violations or inappropriate behaviour; your
mentor will watch for these, as will your org admin, we'll tell you
privately about them, and if nothing is done to fix we'll notify you
in advance and reach out to gsoc-support team,

Org admin responsibility to our mentors, in addition to what was
mentioned above;

- continuously evaluate mentor interaction with students; your org
admin will read what you say, what the student says, and will tell
you privately if there are any things you should do,

- recognize conflicts of interest, interpersonal issues, and replace
as necessary; your org admin will look for problems like these,
and if necessary ask another mentor to take over,

- maintain regular communication with mentors during the program;
your org admin will keep you informed of anything that is relevant
by writing to the gsoc2020assignees alias,

- ensure adequate and appropriate mentoring coverage; your org admin
will watch for you to do your mentoring, especially given the
pandemic, and will ask you questions about your mentoring if nothing
  seems to be happening.

Org admin responsibility to Google;

- we will be the communication liaison with Google, responding to
anything they ask, reporting any participant agreement violations,
  and reporting student withdrawal,

- we will ensure deadlines are met; especially mentor evaluations,

- we will maintain our trusted, capable and qualified mentors,

- we will oversee the activity of all mentors and students and ensure
you meet your responsibilities as well.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Sugar Labs Projects

2020-05-05 Thread James Cameron
Thanks for asking.

For the community bonding period, you should react to your change in
status from a "proposal student" to a "selected student", and the other
changes like;

1. your membership of the Sugar Labs GitHub organisation,

2. your ownership of a software project, consisting so far of our
ideas doc, your proposal doc, and any pull requests you have done,

3. the close yet impartial relationship that must form with your
mentor,

4. that the other students you previously competed with are now on
the same team,

5. everyone knows who you are and what you are doing, there is less
doubt overall.

Specific suggestions;

[ ] read and apply the roles and responsibilities, learning also what
the mentors and org admin are responsible for, keep yourself and us
accountable to them,
https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/help/responsibilities

[ ] continue making pull requests, raising issues, testing software,
as you have time; this is how you demonstrate your ongoing capacity to
do the project, and time spent now may save you time later,

[ ] increase your skills through reading, practice, peer review, and
mentoring,

[ ] review pull requests by others; before the responsible maintainer
(e.g. Lionel) has time to do so; test, evaluate, suggest improvements,
and so forth, see
https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar-docs/blob/master/src/contributing.md#guide-for-reviewers

[ ] set up "watching" notifications on all relevant GitHub
repositories, including any forks or dependencies,

[ ] remove any software you don't need, clone any repositories you
might need, install any necessary tools you have been avoiding, set up
daily or weekly backups, plan what to do if your computer fails,

[ ] take your proposal, strip out the application section, leaving
just the project plan, and begin to iterate deeper into that plan,
making plans within plans; it was not worth doing before, but is worth
doing now,

[ ] keep a diary; not for publication, but so you know what you
tried, what failed, what passed, good for dopamine,

[ ] daily tell your mentor a brief summary of what you have done, in
point form, as simple as possible,

[ ] make gradual necessary changes to your social, religious, or
commercial life to free the time you will need once the work period
begins,

[ ] plan appropriate exercises and other health interventions to
compensate for having to sit and work,

[ ] tell your friends and family all about it, and listen to what
they say.

Other mentors may have other ideas to suggest.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Active Waiting

2020-04-30 Thread James Cameron
We have accepted nine student projects.

Google will check everything they have to, and announce student
projects on 4th May.

We are to not communicate the decisions on projects until then, as
the situation could change.

Students: you are welcome to contribute while you wait.

Mentors: remind yourself of responsibilities by reading

https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/
https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/help/responsibilities

Everyone: get involved on GitHub, mailing list, Wiki, and other public
services used by Sugar Labs.

--

My announcement after 4th May will contain;

* student and project names,

* mentor names,

* backup mentor names,

Each project has a mentor, and one or two backup mentors. Backup
mentors are in case the mentor gets sick or must withdraw from the
program. We can add or change mentors on a project until 31st May.

All technical project communication between mentors and students is to
be public; mailing list, GitHub issues, pull requests, teams, or an
open access chat service announced by mailing list. This is your
responsibility to help and teach your student how to be part of a
community and to communicate more effectively and in the open. Also
to comply with our code of conduct.

Project logistics communication may be private; your availability,
daily diary notes, and constructive feedback that could be
misinterpreted if public. You must CC gsoc2020ad...@sugarlabs.org to
maintain transparency, and also because your org admins are
responsible for continuous evaluation of your interactions. We can't
do that if we can't see it.

Good news!
It's cool that Google give us this help to work on our projects.
I'm specifically like the idea to have 3 Sugar projects, 3 MusicBlocks
projects and 3 Sugarizer projects. It's the diversity of what SugarLabs is
today.

Whatever the result may be, many thanks to all students for their
participation and motivation. Your contribution is always valuable for us.

Based on coordination with Lionel and Walter, I have selected our nine
projects and allocated a Sugar Labs mentor to each project. Three
projects for Sugar, three for Sugarizer, and three for Music Blocks.

As there's a possibility that students may be claimed by other
organisations, I've kept a couple of proposals in reserve. I've
marked all other proposals as "ignored", so that the list is easier
for our mentors to see.

Google are to announce selected students on 4th May after final check
of suitability.

Mentors, please do not tell the students they have been selected, as
the situation could change before the announcement.

Students are welcome to contribute to Sugar Labs meanwhile. We do ask
that if you have to stop contributing you say so. We can finish up
pull requests for you, sometimes.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Slot Requests

2020-04-16 Thread James Cameron
Hello mentors,

We have many student applications, and many students have continued to
contribute.

By 22nd April we are to make our slot request; the number of projects
we are willing to run.

Running each project requires a mentor, and one or two backup mentors
in case the mentor is unavailable.

Please visit your favourite projects on the dashboard and click on
Wish to Mentor.

By 1st May we will make our project selection.

As the pandemic spreads, your situation may have changed. We
understand your survival and relationships come first. Please keep
Walter and myself informed; let us know if you don't feel you can
dedicate six hours a week until 9th September.

Also, please do your mentoring in public as much as possible, so we
can cover for you and watch out for missing mentors.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Proposals received

2020-03-31 Thread James Cameron
Thank you students. We received forty-nine (49) proposals on our
dashboard. Two proposals were immediately ignored as they were
unrelated to Sugar Labs.

Our mentors will now review the proposals along with student
contributions to Sugar Labs. We have until 22nd April to make our
project slots request to Google.

Here is the list of proposals by project idea. Where more than one
proposal was received for an idea, the quantity of proposals is in
parentheses;

- Port Sugar and core activities to Python 3 (qty 3),

- Improve and maintain 25 Sugar activities (qty 3),

- Export Music Blocks code to JavaScript (qty 2),

- Music Blocks Scale Degree vs n^th Modal Pitch (qty 1),

- Colored desktop and activity icons (qty 1),

- Port Sugarizer activities to Sugar (qty 3),

- Fedora advocacy for Sugar,

- Debian advocacy for Sugar (qty 3),

- Sugar app store for Python 3 activities (qty 5),

- Resolve 100 issues in Music Blocks (qty 3),

- Model–View–Controller refactoring for Music Blocks,

- Sugarizer game activity pack (qty 10),

- Sugarizer knowledge activity pack (qty 5),

- Sugarizer School Portal (qty 4),

- New science themed activities [NOVEL IDEA],

There were 42 students. Seven (7) students made two proposals, the
remainder made one proposal.

Many of the proposals were not shared on our mailing list. This is a
choice students can make.

Some of the students have not subscribed to our mailing list. Please
let me know if you are a student who has subscribed with a different
mail address to what you used with your GSoC registration.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Proposals progress #3

2020-03-29 Thread James Cameron
Thank you to students so far. We have twenty-two (22) proposals on
our dashboard.

We have eight proposals with status "final";

- Port Sugarizer activities to Sugar,

- Sugar App Store For Python 3 Activities,

- Model–View–Controller refactoring for Music Blocks,

- Sugarizer Knowledge Activity Pack (qty 2),

- Sugarizer Game Activity Pack (qty 2),

- Sugarizer School Portal,

We have fourteen proposals with status "draft shared";

- Port Sugar and core activities to Python 3,

- Improve and Maintain 25 Sugar Activities,

- Resolve 100 issues in Music Blocks (qty 3),

- Music Blocks JavaScript Export,

- New Science themed Activities,

- Sugarizer Knowledge Activity Pack (qty 2),

- Sugarizer Game Activity Pack (qty 5),

There are 20 students. By cross-checking the submission e-mail with
our mailing list, seven students have not subscribed.

Many of the proposals have not been shared on our mailing list, which
means there has been no opportunity for contribution by or
collaboration with the rest of the Sugar Labs community. Remember
that the dashboard is only accessible to mentors.

Some of the proposals are from students who have not made any
contributions on GitHub to any of our projects, or have made only a
brief trivial contribution. They have not demonstrated capability and
may not have appreciated the culture of an open source community.

Thanks Saumya,

We have a draft shared on our dashboard with your name.

Application Review begins in a few days. For exact time in your
timezone, see
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/how-it-works/#timeline

Yours is the first proposal to have chosen an idea of your own; it is
not in our 2020 ideas list. That's fine to begin with. But we cannot
accept a proposal that has no mentors willing to work with you on it.
(Our 2020 ideas have pre-announced mentors for each idea.)

Please find suitable mentors and add them to your proposal. Your
mentors must have demonstrated coding ability in Python 3 and Sugar
Toolkit for GTK 3, and a willingness to mentor you. You may look for
mentors among closed pull requests and git commits, but please don't
use GitHub to contact them.

Hi Hemansh,

Nice proposal.

Two remarks:
- You didn't mention your knowledge of Vue.js. Do you have any experience
on it? If so, may be you could include some links.
- Regarding the Vote activity, the home screen will certainly not be a
choice between starting a poll or joining a poll. The home screen will be
list of existing poll to launch. Joining the poll will be via the
Neighborhood view. See
https://github.com/llaske/sugarizer/blob/dev/docs/tutorial_step6.md for
more on presence and sharing activities in Sugarizer.

I came across the project ideas - *Port Sugar and core activities to Python

receive guidance on how to proceed further so that I can contribute to *Sugar

2020-03-22 Thread Lionel Laské
Hi Dhruv,

Good proposal with lot of information about how the activities will work
and how you will do it.

Few remarks:
- Regarding Curriculum activity. About generation in PDF/Word/ODT you've
miss the ODT part. I suggest you to take inspiration (or even retrieve
code) from Write activity where PDF/Word/ODT generation is implemented.
- Regarding Vote activity, I don't understand how a race-condition could
happen: presence is handle from the server side, not from the host (see
https://github.com/llaske/sugarizer/blob/dev/docs/tutorial_step6.md#how-presence-works
)

Regards.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020

2020-03-22 Thread Sumit Srivastava
Hi Ahmad,

Music Blocks is a fork of Turtle Blocks JS, which is a derivative of Turtle
Blocks, which is written in Python.
MB <-- TB JS <-- TB <-- Python
You can export Turtle Blocks code as Python code to directly run via python
interpreter leveraging libraries like GTK.

The aim is to provide similar functionality for Music Blocks. This means
the end result should be that you would be able to export Music Blocks as
JavaScript code that can be run without any external dependencies in the
browser.

PS: I've CC'ed sugar-devel mailing list here, feel free to join the mailing
list to stay in touch about the questions other people in the community are
asking about GSoC.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Proposals progress

2020-03-20 Thread James Cameron
We have two proposals with status "draft shared" on our dashboard;

- Resolve 100 issues in Music Blocks,

- Sugarizer game activity pack.

Neither of these have been shared with our mailing list, and the
students have made no public contributions apart from GitHub.

We have one additional draft proposal for "Sugarizer game activity
pack" that has been shared on our mailing list.

In all three cases, the students have contributed to Sugarizer or
Music Blocks before the application period. Well done.

Please look through the GSoC repo [1] and the Sugar Docs repo [2] for
details on how to get involved. Demonstration of skills and commitment are
a large factor in our decision making process.
Regarding the Music Blocks project, feel free to ask me any
specif questions you may have and please do try to tackle a few open issues
(of find a new bug and fix it).

Thanks Dhruv.

Yours is the first proposal, well done.

Please also submit on Google Summer of Code.

Please also post as PDF here on mailing list. Google Docs can change,
a document can disappear (making our archives useless), the export
feature may be turned off, and we don't want to require our members to
use Google Docs.

Please do read https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/README.md
carefully.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020

2020-03-09 Thread Lionel Laské
Hi Abhishek,

Thanks for your interest in SugarLabs and Sugarizer.

You're welcome to communicate by mail with me and other mentors (Ashish and
Michaël, both in CC) on Sugarizer projects.

BTW I suggest you to choose one of this project because it's more than
unlikely that you could be able to make a proposal for all of them.
Once you've choose one, read attentively the "First steps to start section"
for this project on
https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2020.md

Note also that to have a chance to be selected for activity pack projects,
you must propose a solution for the Chess activity issue here:
https://github.com/llaske/sugarizer/issues/592

Regards.

Lionel.

Hello,

Our mentors vary in their approach to communication.

Lionel has explicitly invited direct mail, and we marked that on the
ideas page.

You can find Lionel's mail address on his GitHub profile.

If you feel it is important for others to see what you ask, then you
can CC the mailing list.

I'm not sure what you mean by installed sugarlabs.

I've no specific beginner issues at the moment, sorry. It takes
longer to write them down and answer questions than it does to fix
them myself. You can search GitHub Issues and filter by
org:sugarlabs instead of user:yourself.

You can also look at our defined project list for Sugar;

For improve and maintain Sugar activities, use Sugar, not Sugarizer.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSOC 2020

2020-03-08 Thread ayush nawal
Assuming that you have successfully set up a sugar development environment.

It is strongly recommended to once go through the sugar-docs especially:
https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar-docs/blob/master/src/contributing.md

After the setup, you can simply fork, clone and work on an activity you
wish to contribute to. You can try solving existing issues or any issue of
your own which you faced while exploring the activities.
There is no need to ask permission to work on an issue.

Also, there are many activities that have hardly 1 or 2 issues open, you
need to figure out the issues(if exist) in such cases by yourself and
submit a pull request for the same, open a new issue in any activity only
when you are unable to solve that problem.

Given your interest in the project: Port Sugar and core activities to
python3
You can try contributing to activities that need some form of porting.

Hope it helps, Thanks

2020-02-07 Thread Harshith Pvs
Hello everyone!
I'm Harshith, a CS undergrad from India. I'm writing this to introduce
myself, as I felt this right opportunity after the previous mail from James
about why we new guys subscribed.
Basically, I was feeling shy to mail an entire malling list, as I'm new to
this concept. Moreover, I've been following every single doc of Sugar Labs,
which encourages to mail for really helpless situations, rather try finding
solutions on one's own. So, I didn't feel appropriate to mail one just to
introduce, though I wanted to.

And, being skilled in Python and a bit JavaScript, I was going through few
projects and ideas, as I have already read few others asking same questions
how to contribute and got me comfortable with "How to get started as a
Sugar Labs developer [v9]".

I don't know how good/bad I could write this mail, but would be pleased to
listen if I'm going right or suggest me what should I change in my approach.

Thanks James for your previous mail, and thanks everyone for answering
newbies mails like mine!

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Subscribers and Research

2020-02-07 Thread James Cameron
G'day,

In past 38 days we had 47 new subscriptions to the sugar-devel@
mailing list, an average of nine per week.

Each of them were sent a personal signed copy of "How to get started
as a Sugar Labs developer [v9]" or earlier.

For eight of these, guessing what was happening but wanting to be
sure, I asked "We have a chain of new arrivals and don't really know
what is happening to cause it. Can you please tell me who told you to
subscribe? Thanks!"

Three of these answered that they have subscribed in order to engage
with Google Summer of Code 2020.

In addition to new subscriptions, I've also received some personal
mail that follows a pattern;

My point; radical transparency is really difficult sometimes. Even
when you say you want to be contacted via the mailing list, you'll
still get private contacts from people who don't read that.

These private mails are not from subscribers, so I've sent them a copy
of "How to get started as a Sugar Labs developer [v9]".

The ones that were completed are presumably completed and will not
reappear. There is a new (still growing) list of projects here [1].

FWIW, your best chance at being accepted into GSoC 2020 is to make some
contributions to our codebase so we can both evaluate your skills and your
ability to work within out community.

regards.
