International Sundial Trail Competition

2009-05-14 Thread Patrick Powers
Why not put together a sundial trail in an area of interest known to you?

In order to increase interest in sundials generally, The "British Sundial
Society" and "Sundials on the Internet" have come together jointly to
promote a prize for the best sundial trail to be developed in 2009.

This competition is open to all but the closing date is 31st January 2010,
and two prizes, of £250 and £100 are offered for the best entries
submitted. Full details of the rules and regulations etc are to be found
at http://www.sundials.co.uk/competition2009.htm and these will shortly
also be placed on the BSS website.

Have your camera with you this summer and let us have details of your
trails...

In my project for the BSS website (currently password protected while it
is under development) I have now set a limit for how far people can zoom
in - this is currently set on my Kent example so that the scale bar is
1000 ft. or 200m. It is even possible to set different limits for
maximum and minimum resolution for each of the different views (e.g.
map, satellite, hybrid or terrain views)

Re: Duixons sundial

2009-05-14 Thread Frans W. Maes
Hi Alexei & all,

Interesting, yes. If only because the dial doesn't work properly. At
least, not always. Around the equinox, a sharp-edged shadow is cast on
both sides of the strip, perpendicular to the strip's axis, and the hour
marks are correct. Towards the solstices, the shadow boundary on one
side gets oblique and fuzzy, whereas the edge on the other side shifts
away from the correct position. The deviation is some 25 minutes at
most. John Moir observed this in a model, made from a wide elastic
strip, and reported the results in the Bulletin of the British Sundial
Society, nr. 95.1.

Best regards,
Frans Maes

Hi Chiu, John & all,

The sundial by Duixans (1984) reminds me of the well-known photo of a
gentleman checking his watch against a spiral sundial in a rainy scene.
Hopefully the attachment (26 kB) makes it to the List.

The photo is from Heinz Schumacher, Sonnenuhren. According to the
caption, it was designed by J. Masuet and installed in Alpicat (prov.
Lérida), Spain, in 1974.

Hi, John,
Thank you for pointing out my error. The correct webpage should be
http://photo.xuite.net/nycl.chiu/1477368/134.jpg#support_xuite
and
http://photo.xuite.net/nycl.chiu/1477368/135.jpg#support_xuite

The one gave in the last mail was for me to use only. I copied that by
mistake while I was signed on. It's my fault. Please forget that webpage.

Hi, John,

Since you like the Duixons sundial, I put on two more pictures of it. One
from another angle and may give you more idea about its 3D structure. The
other is the plaque on the ground in front of the dial. It is about the
designer's name and the date it was made.

See http://photo.xuite.net/_my/b_6_5?ab_id=1477368
