[freenet-support] Newcomer to freenet

2002-10-06 Thread Simon Wade

Hello,

I'm trying to set up a freenet node on my PC. It is successfully
installed but when I click on any of the bookmarks from the Gateway page
I get a Network Error with the following text:

Network Error

Couldn't retrieve key: SSK@npfV5XQijFkF6sXZvuO0o~kG4wEPAgM/homepage//
Hops To Live: 15
Error: Route not Found

Attempts were made to contact 3 nodes.

 * 3 were totally unreachable.
 * 0 restarted.
   * 0 cleanly rejected.

The request couldn't even make it off of your node. Try again,
perhaps with gpl.txt to help your node learn about others. The publicly
available seed nodes have been very busy lately. If possible try to get
a friend to give you a reference to their node instead.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I should do?

Thanks,

Simon

FYI, i needed to update my jre to 1.4.1 anyhow, so i thought i would go
the "yes to download and install a new jre" route, it worked fine this way.

Um... no. The default port number for "mainport" is . The nodeinfo
service no longer exists; nodeinfo used to be port 8890 by default.
The fproxy service no longer exists as such, either; it used to be port
by default. Fproxy and nodeinfo have been merged into mainport.

Anyone using KSK@ keys for important data needs to *seriously*
rethink their strategy.

2002-10-06 Thread Josh Steiner

ok, i moved my existing node's folders and decided to try out the new
windows installer to see how its doing, it is having problems finding my
java installtion. it popped up the "i did not find sun's java runtime"
message, i hit No so that it would search for it, it said
"congratulations! java interpreters have been found. you may choose
from the list". i hit ok. it show's two runtimes:

C:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin\java.exe
C:\j2sdk1.4.0\jre\bin\java.exe

i clicked on the top one, then "update settings" and it pops up the "i
still can't find any java interpretors, did you really install the JRE?
 installation will now stop"

... and it does stop...

this is on windows 2000 with the installer i grabbed from:

[freenet-support] Bugathon for 0.5pre2 - what you can do to help...

2002-10-06 Thread Ian Clarke

Ok, in a few days we will release 0.5pre2 - which may become Freenet
0.5.

We need people to hunt for bugs, not just the obscure kind that you can
only spot by pouring through the logs, but also the kind that are so
obvious that the core developers don't see them - such as usability
issues, assuming that the user knows things they might not know, holes
in the documentation etc etc.

If you think you have found such a bug, however superficial or obvious
it might be - send it to the development mailing list so that we can
ensure it is fixed in the next release.

Bug reports on both Linux and Windows are needed - particularly Windows.

All the best,

Ian.

Yes. There are many other freenet clients; the two I've written[1]
are liber and liber2.pl. check out liberator.sf.net for information
on mainly liber. It's a great client, it just needs someone to make a
windows binary, as neither developer "does windows."

We don't check the bug page on our sf site, but feel free to email us
about any problems with liber; I know I'll be happy to help you get it
working.

That wont do you any good freeweb hasn't been updated in a very long time. No it
doesn't handle large files or a large number of file.

What you can do, which is what I've been atempting not sucessfully for months but the
new datastore should help once all the other problems are fixed, is insert your large
file seperately from your site and just reference them with URI on the site.

ie instead of inserting big file with the site [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 do this instead

the slash tell it that its an external link and then insert the file seperately some
other way, and other ways seem mostly broken, with the new changes.

Use SSK's of course and you know htl=0 inserts into your local node.

When i try through the web interface I get an arithmetic error returning when it tries
to insert the split file manifest for larger files.

Data and check blocks inserted. inserting SplitFile metadata...

Like that all the time.

Fishtools is broken for the i guess for the same reason as that's when it seems to
hang so it looks to me like something to do with FEC and block over 256

There's Frost but then you have a reference to a CHK and you're locked into Frost in
some ways.

Java command line says it works, but then can't get it back.

Then there's FCPTools which still seem to work, I'l be finding out today
if i can insert several gig still with them today.

Thats' where I'm at.

Good luck.

[freenet-support] maybe another another way to keep anonymity with rogue freesites?

2002-10-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

returning to the topic "how to prevent my browser fetching css and other stuff when
displaying freesites coming through fproxy and thus revealing my ip"

you need a packet firewall that is able to block certain applications (e.g. by
determining the app's MD5 or anything similar)

for windows i recommend:
- Tiny Personal Firewall (version 2.x, NOT version 3.x) (get it under
http://tiny.software.com/ or so) or
- Kerio Personal Firewall (is the successor of the Tiny PF, get it under
http://www.kerio.com/)
i DO NOT recommend zonealarm, because it simply sucks setting up filter rules ;)

so, first you need a firewall rule which allows connections to localhost, from any
port to any port.
you should find the needed settings below, allow this rule by default, because it does
no harm and is needed later:

[X] "allow loopback" ALLOW TCP/UDP (any port) <-> 127.0.0.1:(any port) (any
application)

then, create a filter which is disabled by default and will prevent the browser you
use to connect to other computers if enabled:

[ ] "freenet safe" DENY TCP (any port) <-> (any ip):(any port) ()

as you can see, this rule will deny ALL (TCP)connections to other computers (AND
localhost) your browser will try to establish when enabled.

alas, the last step is to ensure, that the "allow loopback" filter is processed before
the "freenet safe" filter, so that you can always connect with any app to
localhost (and thus to fproxy), but your browser is stopped if it decides to connect
to somewhere else. graphics within freesites or any "freelinks" will run over
smoothly fproxy, which will deliver these to your browser.
