[freenet-support] Assistance

2009-06-27 Thread Kathryn A. Graham
Hello, all,

I would like to request some assistance. I am a writer working on a
book on cyber-security. This led me to Freenet and the concept of a
Darknet.

My audience is the typical Windows user - not an idiot, but no special
technical training. Just a typical user, in other words. In order for
me to write about Freenet and help other users get started with it, I
need to understand it thoroughly myself. I am a Windows tech myself -
MCSE and A+ certifications, and many years in a support job.

As of right now, I am connected to Freenet - I only have one
acquaintance also using it, so I am still using it on low security
settings and connecting to everyone I can. I can browse sites, no
problem at all, and I'm fascinated. This reminds me of the very, very
early Internet - a definite "outlaw" feel to it. I want to add a flog
of my own, but the Freenet fork of Thingamablog is locking up on me. I
think I'm going to have to locally publish a blog site and then upload
it using jSite or similar.

Freemail appears to be working for me, but I can't receive messages,
either to my long "real" address, or to the shorter address I created.
Deleting messages is spotty. It works sometimes, and sometimes not. My
friend also on Freenet does not receive the messages I send. Yet
Freemail is installed as a plugin, and there does not appear to be a
problem. I received all the initial welcome stuff. I also have FMS
installed and running, but I can't seem to announce my identity. It's
been several days, and I have yet to receive a single captcha to
complete. I've verified that FMS is running. I've also done all the
typical support stuff - disabling firewall etc. to see if that is
blocking me. All ports are forwarded without any apparent problems at
my router.

If someone here is willing to give me some one on one assistance, we can
take it off list if necessary. We can use GPG to encrypt messages if
that makes you more comfortable, or even get on the telephone if you
prefer. My wide open address is kate9954 (at) gmail (dot) com, and my
public key is published at most of the servers.

Many thanks,

Kate

[freenet-support] assistance

2002-08-19 Thread Jim Piga

Congrats on the success of this project.

I am at a loss to get this system to work. I have downloaded all the
softwhere, and have no trouble getting to the freenet gateway.

My problem is retrieving information. I cannot access a list of the
files that are available to me. All I get on the gateway is a filename
request. How do I know what the filename is if I don't know what is
available? In the search field I put "music" and got nothing.

Sorry! I'm a newbie and could use a little help. Thanks!

1st, im not a Freenet developer but only an old time user. Thought you
should know.

I write a freesite that is specifically aimed at new users, the idea is
to have a one-site Freenet resource where newbies can find out what
Freenet can do and how to do it (basic tutorials). It's a long way from
completed but it does include some usable info.

It's called FAFS - the Freenet Applications FreeSites and it's linked in
the FProxy default bookmarks.
There you should find most of the basic info and figure out where to go
to get more detailed info.

Freemail is horribly buggy. Some say that 'it works on odd tuesdays if
the date sums up to a multiple of 7'

> installed and running, but I can't seem to announce my identity. It's

If I was still using FMS, I would bootstrap your ID adding each other as
peers manually. But I'm not using FMS and neither are ... pretty much
anyone.
FMS was a proof of concept for the WoT (web of trust) which IMHO failed
miserably at the 'jerk test' (people abuse the WoT to try and censor
'immoral' users, instead of using it for what it's designed to do).
In addition, FMS was never actually subjected to flood attacks trying to
DoS it, so we dont 'really' know if the WoT would actually do the job
that it's supposed to do.

However, it seems that ATM there isnt any feasible alternative to WoT,
so it's been decided to use WoT for the next official Freenet messaging
system, which is called Freetalk and will be bundled with Freenet 0.8
when it's released in a few months.
You can run Freetalk loading the Freetalk and WoT plugins manually
(downloads.freenetproject.org/alpha/plugins/ ...something)

Anyhow, see FAFS for more info about FMS (if you really want to use
that), Freetalk, and Frost <=try this

Short version:
Basically, all I've said is to have a look at FAFS for basic info about
Freenet, don;t run FMS (no-one uses it anyway) but stick to Frost and
possibly test Freetalk, and Freemail is buggy.

Is the development of freetalk stalling or can I get a more recent
version from somewhere else? The last version is from may 30th and
does not work for me. (all the messages are deleted everytime I
restart my node).

Re: [freenet-support] Assistance

2009-06-29 Thread Kathryn A. Graham
Thanks so much to Luke and others for your response! I am attempting to
implement Frost as I type this, and I got a good laugh over "sending IP
address to the NSA." I tried Freetalk as well, with the same result as
FMS. No captchas downloaded no matter what I did. As you can tell by
the delay in my answering your message, I tried it for a couple of
days. I think it is safe to say that no captchas were *going* to
download, which concerns me. There is evidently something in my
configuration that is preventing me from using Web of Trust, although I
can't figure out what it is.

I have forwarded ports 11231, 57881, 9481 through my router and opened
them through my firewall (Zone Alarm Pro) as well. I have confirmed
that Windows Firewall is *not* running. I have also rebooted several
times. If there is something else I should check, I would
appreciate learning about it. My Windows version is XP Pro, latest
updates and service packs.

I've just minimized this message and noticed that Frost is hung at about
2/3 in its starting sequence. I am now going to go drink a large cup of
hemlock.

A few moments later, it wants me to check my node is running - but it
says it will start anyway. Node is definitely running. I have
confirmed that the service is running, and through the web interface, I
can see that I am connected to one friend and 11 strangers. Now Frost
is using about 55 percent of my CPU and doing nothing that I can see,
but the splash screen has finally gone away.

An hour later - my HD is being accessed like crazy, but still no sign of
any application. I'm clearly going to have to reboot.

Terribly, terribly frustrating. And the guy that maintains the active
links page wants new sites announced in FMS, so even if I do get Frost
working, somehow I still have to get Web of Trust stuff working also.
I'm about to throw up my hands and give up. Not worth it. Damned
shame, too - I'd already created a flog and an active link - needed only
to write first blog entry and get it up there. Gr.

Please - any help greatly appreciated.

Kate

start over at the beginning, lol. Guess what? I'm starting to see

I can't help you with FMS, i've given up on that (i'm not going to rant about
it). It's still used by a few people but from what my node picks up there are
significantly more active conversations on Frost, unfortunately developers have
stopped reading all the bug reports there *cough*.

The problem seems to be that something has stopped Frost connecting to your
node. Is your node running on the same machine? If so then you did *not* need to
forward 9481 port on the router, but you might have needed to open it on Zone
Alarm anyhow (i'm not sure). Now, Zone Alarm also keeps track of what
applications try to access the network, Frost needs to be one of them, even
though it only accesses the node (and i believe you can specify that) it needs
to have that access, otherwise that might be causing the problem.

Can you check that and get back to me on the list?

 - Volodya

P.S. You don't want to post the Node ports on the open list, because this way
others will be able to know that it's you who has connected to them. Of course
if it doesn't matter, then it's ok, but it creates an atmosphere where others
may slip and post that info also.

One more thing, if your node is on the different machine than the Frost, (which
would be the case if you had to forward port 9481) then you have to tell the
frost where to find the node before starting it. Look for 'config' directory
wherever frost is, and edit the file 'frost.ini' (when frost is not running) you
should have a line like:
availableNodes=127.0.0.1:9481

You need to change 127.0.0.1 to the ip address of where your node is.

Of course this is assuming that your node is at the different machine than
Frost.

Thanks for your suggestions, Volodya.

No, my node is definitely on the same machine where I am trying to run
Frost. I'm on a home network, but my other half is no computer whiz,
and I am the only one experimenting with Freenet as yet. He will be my
test case once I get comfortable with this stuff, and before I try to
write any book chapters about Freenet. If he can do it, any Windows
user can, lol.

I've checked the ZA programs listing and Frost is not listed as such -
merely as an instance of Java. I've given Java more access than I am
completely comfortable with, but Frost still cannot connect to my node
at all. I've tried turning ZA and Avast off completely, but it still
does not work. The Web of Trust plugin is not working either (for
Freetalk). Just FMS, and only since I reinstalled it a little while
ago. I'm not successfully announced yet, of course, but a few captchas
are trickling in and I can read some messages.

I'm heartened by tentative success with FMS, and I'm going to reinstall
Web of Trust and see if I can get that working now for Freetalk.

This is very very strange. FMS is working when Frost isn't, perhaps an insulting
question, but where did you get the version of Frost you are running? Can you go
to the frost.ini in the config directory and check availableNodes setting?

Glad to hear things are at least somewhat working. I'm not at all
certain what the Frost issue could be.

Be warned that WoT/Freetalk is not precisely release ready, as I
understand it :)

Some of the other messages in this thread may have been unclear, but I
believe the only relationship between FMS and WoT/Freetalk is that
they solve similar problems; their web of trust concepts are fairly
different, they're by different developers, and share no code. There
has been much ranting about the design decisions of one or both
approaches by many people (myself included); there's no need to rehash
that, but you can find it in the archives if you're interested in the
spam / introductions / captchas problem in the abstract.

Also, neither Frost nor FMS is officially supported by the Freenet
Project; you can certainly find help here, but bug reports should go
to their authors.

My understanding is that the Thingamablog port is very old and not
maintained, which I find unfortunate. The problem it tries to solve
-- making publishing a flog easy for a new user -- is important, imho.

I suspect you're more interested and able to give comments on
usability issues, installation issues, and what the average Windows
user is likely to expect than many people are. I encourage you to
offer any such comments / critiques / etc here, in IRC, or by filing
bugs on the bug tracker. Improvements to the first-time-user
experience are very important, imho.

I'm glad you seem to be liking Freenet!

Re: [freenet-support] Assistance

2009-06-29 Thread Kathryn A. Graham
Hi, Volodya,

No worries. There is no such thing as an insulting question when
something isn't working. I worked support enough years to have a thick
skin anyway.

I got Frost from the alpha/plugins directory at
downloads.freenetproject.org. However, no worries there. I downloaded
Frost again, removed the old, and tried from scratch - and bingo, it's
working. I did the same with Freemail, and it is suddenly working also,
lol. Evidently, third time is the charm.

I am coming to the conclusion that being stubborn is an asset in this
business.

WoT and Freetalk are still not working - not even after a reinstall of
the unofficial plugins - but as somebody just pointed out, they are
still a work in progress.

Does anyone know when Freenet 0.8 is expected? I understand Freetalk
will be bundled with it, and I hope it can be persuaded to work by then.

Many thanks for all the help!

Kate

Perhaps something has corrupted the configuration or something else like that.

Yes, but strangely enough for me most of things just work when it comes to
Freenet. I don't know if it's my karma or i just don't notice some bumps which
attract people, but i hope it stays that way. There are things which are
horribly uncomfortable to use, but then i end up changing them so that they are
suitable for me.

FMS for example is being mirrored to Frost by me, because i find Frost to be
better. So if you want to read FMS without the need to post there, you just
subscribe to the board "fms-NAME.OF.BOARD" substituting the name of the board on
FMS and bingo, you are reading the messages (timestamps and senders are
preserved, even threads work if i happen to receive the messages more or less in
order).

I have not tried these yet.

No problems, if you need more you can always ask on Frost, there are many people
who will be willing to help... and many trolls too, but you can ignore them.

That's debugging code. :|

There have been changes since then, I haven't deployed the plugin yet though.
Build from source or wait for a new version to be deployed.

problem is, that there is no search engine like google in freenet(at least not yet).
The keys are usually some like this:

SSK%409G4s~jLQJB7ALQg-v2q5xKAJy9YPAgM/CofE//
(Content of Evil)

SSK@rBjVda8pC-Kq04jUurIAb8IzAGcPAgM/TFE//
(The Fredom Engine)

If you want to browse freenet, you have to start from a portal like The Freedom Engine.
