Thanks Scott. I know what top posting is...I just don't know why you
think I did. I hit reply, type my message and go forth. Didn't think

It can be a lot harder than that. It's effectively illustrated in the
links that Scott provided. A little effort in replying can save a lot
of wasted effort in trying to bring oneself up to speed or refresh
one's memory on a long thread.

Unfortunately Gmail top posts by default. So expecting bottom posting to be
and to remain the default behavior may be an exercise in futility. proper
ettiquite or not, some people just bang off replies and figure everything is

Ha ha. Now Scott's saying no and I'm saying yes. In my view, you
bottom-posted, although you could refine it further by trimming the

Gotta tell you guys...this is out right frustrating. Is it the fact
that I'm using Gmail or that by definition, threading in email is
broken by design. I would have imagined that the Spamassassin mailing
list would have eaten all Gmail users alive if Gmail were the issue.

That looks correct. Unfortunately this is the way mailing lists have

At the risk of singling myself out, I prefer top posting. I thought this
battle had been fought and abandoned in the early 90s, as no consensus could be
reached. The ratio of top poster fanatics to bottom poster fanatics is
generally 1:1. Give that, it is difficult to say that mailing lists have
operated consistently in one manner or the other.

Personally, I find that bottom posting is confusing to read (for me - others
feel the same about top posting). It's also not the default behavior in any
version of Microsoft Outlook - which means it is time consuming (and before I
get a 'so what', consider the user base...) to do.

Rather than spending time revisiting this ancient battle, it may simply be more
efficient to require trimming posts to the appropriate amount of content, and
allow replies to be made at the posters preference. For my part, if I can read
the entire email quickly (read: properly trimmed quotes), I don't particularly
care whether someone top or bottom posts. I'm far more irked by issues like
poor sentence structure, grammar and punctuation; not to mention content.

If it really needs to be list policy for one reason or another, then I'll just
do my best to remember to comply. I have found, though, the most effective
lists are the ones with the fewest policies. After all, we're all on this list
because we like and use PfSense - I don't think any of us are truly interested
in spending time having our netiquette scrutinized. :-)

I've found that a few educational off-list messages can
bring quite a few people around.

For the hard cases, there's the killfile. Or list bans, for
moderated lists. To be used ruthlessly,
so deliberate netiquette violators will get the message.

I find it funny when people assume because they do a certain thing,
that they must not be doing x. I have 9 mailing lists that I
participate in, and as I mentioned before, none have bothered me or
others for that matter about top posting. But, as I stated, I'll go
forth with bottom posting from now on.

Yes - bottom posting takes a bit of work. But on a high volume
mailing list or if you receive a lot of mail, a little bit of context
goes a LONG way.

And while we're talking about it - Trim your messages, too!

Only leave the relevant portion of the original email in the message -
so that means trimming the list-footer off the message.

Again - it takes a bit of work, but it really makes reading mailing
lists a LOT easier.

Try it for a bit - once you do, you'll realize how much better it is.

who think that top posting is perfectly valid seem to be willing to
abide by your particular brand of netiquette naziism and the rest of the

You're still not getting it. Bottom-posting doesn't do jack if you
don't trim replies, so one has to scroll down to the bottom of the
message.

This is a good example, why bottom-posting sucks...
Why do i need to scroll past all previous teks i read just few seconds
ago, following that thread?
If i need to read it, then i could scroll down, but rarely there is need

I think that top-posting is better or simpler
top-posting is more natural, everything in the nature that is newer
is on the top ... this is what we as first see

on the other hand we are more trained to read from top to bottom,
the newest words in a message are on the bottom...
we write from top to bottom...

I agree with Eugen. Folks, this is the lists rules. If you do not

It's either that or I will stop reading these lists altogether.

A good MUA will hide the quoted text. Thus allowing you to see
context of interleaved comments when you wish to. A good poster will
also trim crap that isn't pertinent to his message or doesn't provide
any contextual value. As Michael notes, people read top to bottom, I
don't want to read something, wonder what the hell it's about and
scroll to the bottom to figure it out, I'll just move on.

there's some buttons on the keyboard called cursor keys, they move the
little blob around which indicates where what you type will appear.

you press the cursor down and type the response at the bottom. this may
require more than a few nanoseconds of your time.

for bonus points, as you move the cursor to the bottom, you highlight
the existing text and delete anything irrelevant to your reply in order
to ensure your reply makes sense and eliminates clutter and confusion.

it's like when someone asks four questions and you say "yes, no, yes
yes", but no-one knows which question you're answering.

IME, people who top post and don't trim assume they're far too important
and their time is more valuable than other people's; however, quite
often what happens is people can't be bothered to wade through the
emails and so the top-poster gets ignored.

this is why a forum is often best, as it basically forces
bottom-posting, but people can read the replies backwards if they want.

Hi @all,

I believe the best statement at all is from Scott:

... this are the list rules ... (in sense)

It is like "Simon say's" , and there is Simon's Castle ;-)

but it seems to me, not all the listmembers know about that rules ;-)
we have many mature listmembers, from the times that this rules
are not spreaded to all members ... is this possible?

and now i think it should be clear. Or not?

just that what i see.

Greetings

michael
