Thanks for the links Chris,

I have realized my desire to use some heavy packages will not be satiated by
an embedded system.

They're as cheap as anyone for the ALIX systems, and they include
their custom manufactured cases that are much nicer than the standard
case IMO. And they're the largest financial supporter of this project
of any hardware reseller, so we encourage you to go with them, or at a
minimum one of the listed vendors above as they all provide important
support to the project.

Yes, I already read this. But as I wrote to Gary I think in the end ALIX
is the better way. I'll let the few WRAP's as spare parts for my running
m0n0wall devices and buy a new ALIX. I want to play with such a new
board anyway. ;-)

Thanks and regards,
Markus

Yep, and that's my main concern: EOL. They will do nothing new with that
old platform.

Fine. Then I think I'll go with ALIX.

Thank you very much! :)

Hi,

I'm new here and would like to ask you something about the use of
pfSense on embedded devices, especially on PC Engines WRAP/ALIX boards.

In the wiki I read that there are a) some functional limitations and b)
a special handling of booting necessary when using WRAP boards (which I
used a long time together with m0n0wall and still have some unused ones).

My question: will I have the same "problems" when using the newer ALIX
boards or does this platform working without the WRAP limitations? If
running on ALIX is possible without these issues then I rather would buy
new boards than using the old WRAPs.

Thanks and kind regards,
Markus

PCEngines ended support for the device and so they haven't released a
firmware to support packetmode, which is necessary for the newer
versions of pfSense. It can be overcome, but there are distinct
limitations to using a WRAP with newer versions of pfSense. Your ALIX
boards will work just fine with the newer versions of pfSense. I have
several of them and they work perfectly.

I don't have a WRAP but I use the 4G pfSense 1.2.3 nanobsd image with an
ALIX.2D2 as WiFi access point.

There are only the limitations of the nanobsd versus a full installation
on the ALIX if you install on a compact flash card.

For me the ALIX is a nice piece of hardware that get enterprise features
with pfSense. Very nice to configure with the GUI. I love it.

So I think if you can handle the NanoBSD booting problem you should try
it before buying new hardware.
It is well documentet at
