Re: help on sounds

2008-09-24 Thread Michael Secord

This is an issue with GTK.  There is a file
you can replace in the GTK lib to fix this issue.  Search trac for it,
unless someone else gives you the link, let me know if you need more.

 ok - next problem - pidgin  2.5.1
- I type a name, to allow pidgin to look up the first match, as I have
always done in the past; but only the first character shows up in the
search
buffer and no useful name is found.  What am I doing wrong?  Same
problem when ctrl-F for a find.

The way to disable sounds is with the "Mute Sounds" checkbox
in
Tools->Preferences->Sounds.

If that is already checked, are you sure that these sounds are
actually coming from Pidgin?

Bob,

Go to the link that Phil gave us
(http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4966) and follow the instructions in
this comment (#4) (http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4966#comment:4).

Just download the zip.  Extract libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll and put
it in your %path%\GTK\bin\ folder.  Replacing the one currently in
there.

Hi guys, I've been using the Pidgin IM for a while, this
issue is been there since 6 months or so, but I haven't tried to look
for any solution to it until today

I 'm using the portable version of Pidgin 2.5.2, the issue goes like
this:

Each time I open pidgin, i need to enter my account info (user, psswd),
I remember Pidgin is able to save the account info and stores it in a
file (accounts.xml), I looked into this file in the
PortableApps\PidginPortable\Data\settings\.purple path, this file seems
like has not been touched in months (the nicknames are not the current
ones i've been using).

I think there's some misconfiguration in some other file, I hope you
guys can help me out with this.

By the way, I'd like to congratulate you for the excellent work you
have been doing developing this IM client, keep up the good work and
hope in a near the users would be able to see webcam support.

Thanks in advance and have a nice weekend!

Cheers!

Huh? Pidgin is a client to connect to ... oh about 10 different client

That's like saying there's a Honda Civic outage today, when in actuality

Previous experience with these sorts of crash is that it is nearly
always a plugin that is causing it, often where the function of a given
plugin has been replicated within Pidgin.

Try turning off all plugins and then selectively re-enabling them and
re-testing for the crash.

In my case, I'd say I have no idea at all abt plugins. I don't think I
use any. I only have 4 accounts on pidgin - MSN, Yahoo, GoogleTalk and
ICQ.
Well, as Balazic says, it's true - it locks up.

Re: Pidgin Mail Backup and Restore: What Settings Files to Back up?

2009-01-31 Thread Michael Secord
Michael,

The settings file is located under the user data:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\

Backup the ".purple" folder and everything is backed up. After you
install pidgin in the new pc, drop the folder back in the same spot
there and you are all set.

You will have to have hidden folders shown in order to find the
respective folder.

Chris,

Chances are this is another app on your system making the sounds. This
was asked on the list before and it was another app making sounds when
pidgin was started/exited.

You said this happens on connect/disconnect. Are you referring to when
you startup and close down pidgin? Or when you connect/disconnect
specific accounts? Any particular accounts that this happens on?

-Michael

I have `Tools->Mute Sounds` ticked, yet I still get sounds from Pidgin, at
least on connect/disconnect.

This is not cool.

Temporary workaround is to kill Pidgin's sound output through the Windows
per-app volume controls, but I'd rather your app would just shut up when
asked to.

Hello, I would like to start by saying that I am very
happy with pidgin and the service it provides. The program works
soundly and is just what I need.

What I need assistance with is something that I can't seem to find in
the "User Guide". I have frequently seen people typing in 'third
person'. There seems to be a way to add three astricts to the front of
one's screen name, change the name color, and add a sentence on the end
of the screen name all at once. Now, I'm sure I'm not being very clear
here so I'll show an example.

A friend will type a message and it will appear as such;

"(1:17:25 PM) ***Mack is a nerd"

when I try copying it comes out as

"(1:17:27 PM) Alec: ***is confused"

I'm obviously doing something wrong here, I just don't understand what
it is. And trust me, I'd ask my friend how she does it but she seems to
think that it's fun to keep me in the dark, haha.

I realize that this isn't a problem, let alone an urgent problem, so
please take your time responding, I'm in no rush what-so-ever. Thank
you for taking time in reading my problems.

Re: login problems

2009-05-12 Thread Michael Secord
Matthew,

In order to change your password, you need to do so with the service
provider. Pidgin is simply the application. Any password changes you
make to your accounts, you also will have to make with the service (AIM
with http://aim.com, Yahoo! with http://yahoo.com etc etc). Changing
the password within Pidgin will not actually change the password for the
account.

I think the whole issue here, is that the "/me" is a good command, but
when you add "/say" in front of me, it should NOT interpret the "/me" as

"/me foo" command

Not exactly. Pidgin interprets any incoming message of the form "/me
foo" as an emote. You're actually sending "/me foo" to the channel,
your Pidgin is simply displaying it the same as it would a CTCP
ACTION.

Why would it do that ?

Perhaps I should have been clearer ... Pidgin interprets an incoming
message of the form "/me foo" as an emote on *any protocol*. This
behavior goes back years and years, and it was spawned from many
users' desire to have emotes on protocols that have no native support.
The fact that it also "works" on IRC, which has native emote support,
is simply fallout.

As to whether or not it's holistically a good idea, who knows -- but
I've never seen it come up before, so I'm inclined to think it's not
hurting much. ;-)

Re: Pidgin Chat room user list window disappeared

2009-06-18 Thread Michael Secord

Assuming you are talking about the userlist
- you have to be careful, if you go to the right of chat display, you
should see the resize arrows come up, drag them towards the left
(assuming you are using default settings) and your list should come
back.  The actual bar is somewhere between the scrollbar and the edge
of the window.

Re: Install Problem

2009-06-24 Thread Michael Secord
It is very possible. You can always try a different sourceforge
download mirror also. If it is in fact the corporate firewall you can
try to use a proxy to download it. Alternatively you could try a
different computer and see if it works.

Again, please reply to the whole list instead of just me.

Please reply to the list too. An installer integrity check fail
means that there is something not correct in the download, it might
be something due to the browser or firewall/security software.

You got the mailing list at
this URL: http://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support

It is in no way my fault that you failed to understand the
repercussions of said mailing list.  You also emailed
"support@pidgin.im", which if you'd look, is NOT my email address.  I
do NOT work for Pidgin.  Pidgin is an OpenSource Software project, and
there are no "employees" of said entity, just contributors, developers,
etc.

Again, I DO NOT have the ability to remove your messages
from the archives.  This is NOT my issue, and I have provided more than
enough evidence to this effect.

After this email I will cease to reply to ANY and ALL communication
from you, unless you post it to the list of which you have a problem
with, it's not difficult, just hit "Reply to All", instead of "Reply".

Good day to you, sir.

 Michael,
 As you can
see by the email that I just

posted
anything to a public domain. I simply emailed a PERSONAL EMAIL to the

without any knowledge that this would be posted to the general public.
I fully

 Michael,
 I don’t
believe that was the case as
I emailed the support email listed and never posted anything to a
public
domain. You copied the support list on your replies and I did not
respond to
the list. If this was an oversight, I understand but please remove my
email from
the mailing list anyways. I don’t believe the emails will help anyone
else as I was unable to install your program anyways. Thanks for your
understanding on this matter.

Just so we are all on the
same page.

Thanks Evan for your reply:
I'm not mailing Colin directly on this, but assuming he's still on the
list

Here's my copy of the message I got when I joined this list. This is
from November 2007, so it may have changed. But this should be
painfully obvious you're joining a mailing list:

Mailing list subscription confirmation notice for mailing list Support

We have received a request from for subscription of

your email address, "", to the

support@pidgin.im
mailing list.  To confirm that you want to be added

to this mailing list, simply reply to this message, keeping the

Subject: header intact.  Or visit this web page:

.

Now this is all the more reason I believe that any non official 'copy'
of a mailing list should require each person on the list to opt-in. I
for one opted out of having my messages be on Nabbles forum. So anyone
reading Nabble's website won't see my posts.

But Colin has taken this to the extreme and obviously not understood
what a mailing list is, and obviously hasn't read the message(s) he
received upon joining said mailing list.

If you continue to receive such harassment from Colin, I'd suggest a
polite call to the main number for his office?
Thank you Collin for apparently not understanding a simple concept such
as this, and for not knowing how to spell.  I am unable to find one
spelling/grammatical mistake in any of my emails that have been
written/sent.  I have also refrained from using any profanities.

I do believe a call to your main office is in order.

Regards to all,

-Michael

As long as you are using the location that the config files should be,
and use the same folder, in this case .gaim it shouldn't have any issues
picking them up.

As for finding Gaim 1.3.1, chances are you won't be able to, though I
won't say it's impossible. The Pidgin repositories on Pidgin's SF
project only goes back to 1.5.1 and Gaim's SF project repository is
empty. Not only is is bad security to use 1.3.1 as there are a lot of
fixes for security since then, as well as some required fixes to allow

Yes, the normal pidgin install. To activate portable mode just change
the exe name to pidgin-portable.exe as directed in the FAQ here:
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#RunningWindowsPidginFromaUSBDrivePortableMode

There's more to it than just renaming, but that outlines it. Again, if

On top of Bill's humor (which I might add, was really good), the answer
is probably not. Adium is the native "version" of Pidgin, though it's
not actually Pidgin, but it uses the same framework. They would
probably be more apt to create an iPhone version, though from the last

The iPhone version requires the Pidgin Galactic Site License. At 5
billion dollars this license works out to less than a dollar per user
given the current population of the planet. I am sure that as soon as
you agree to purchase a Galactic Site License the developers will be
happy to produce in any flavor you like.

Not really, but I couldn't resist ripping off Matt Wall's old joke

I'm running Pidgin on Windows (XP) - is there a
setting/preference to instruct Pidgin to not flash in the
Windows taskbar while running? I'm not really sure why
it's flashing exactly, but I'm guessing it's notifying me
that one or more buddies just came online. That's not
really useful to me and because I'm using Pidgin to
consolidate four different IM networks together, my buddy
list is quite large. So, Pidgin is pretty much flashing
constantly all day.

Pidgin is definitely a keeper if I can figure out how to
make it stop flashing, but nothing is jumping out at me
from scanning the menu options

Any tips would be appreciated

Thanks -kelly

Re: Facebook Conformation

2009-11-03 Thread Michael Secord
The support list here can't help you with this, but I did have this
issue as well. It's an issue with the actual facebook plugin for
pidgin, of which you can find the homepage here:
http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/

For everyone on the list as well - I actually had to start pidgin with
the -n switch to disable my facebook account as even attempting to
disable it would crash pidgin as well.

This seems to be a recent change with Facebook that the plugin developer
will have to look into.

Just go to the site, then click applications, then you'll see Pidgin

Re: I am installing Pidgin in Firefox. ????

2009-12-14 Thread Michael Secord

I'm going to add to this, because I think this is where the issue arises.

There are a lot of users who won't even /look/ in the help or FAQ for an
address to contact Pidgin at. Most people assume that there is a
support@pidgin.im address and therefore assume it's private.

My only recommendation would be to somehow have a /filter/ email of some
sort, that when a user NOT subscribed to the list emails it, they are
warned that this is a public email list and then given an option to
continue sending the email, to cancel the email, or to join the list.

I've seen lists done in a similar manner, and I believe this might be a
viable solution (though I'm not sure if the current list software
supports it).

You know, there really needs to be a clearer indication that mailing
support@pidgin.im sends mail to a public list with many hundreds or

This has been discussed before and changes were made to just about all the
places where one could find the mailing list address.

OK, I will admit I had not looked, because I know this sort of thing
already. But many recent Pidgin users apparently don't.

If there's any way you think it could be clearer, please provide SPECIFIC
suggestions, instead of a vague "It should be made clearer".

OK, well my specific suggestion would be to put capitalized text in the
description of the support list address stating not to post user IDs or
passwords in any mail sent to that address.

I see it already shows in bold text that it is a *public* mailing list,
I can confidently say that I have spoken to many people who do not know
what that means without it being explained to them, so perhaps a short
sentence saying that any message they send to it is read by a large
number of people and that IM user IDs and passwords MUST not be sent to
the list.

Is that clear enough?

Re: so slow

2010-01-04 Thread Michael Secord
I've used Pidgin for years on XP and Win7, and each time, Pidgin loads
up from closed to a BL window (with no accounts auto-connecting which
WILL slow things down like mentioned before, but not because of the
application itself) in less than 10 seconds consistently. If you use the
"-n" switch for the app, you'll disable auto-connecting upon startup and
thus will see the app load faster. Keep in mind that the issue you are
seeing is dependent on your environment, accounts, and plugins as well.

I know of a few other people who're having this issue, and it
seems to centralize around using the AIM account in multiple locations.
I've since stopped using this account on my N900 and PC, but the issue
persists, and to be clear, started only when I started the multiple
logins. Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe not, but I can't find a true
source, ticket, or fix for this.

Pidgin 2.6.4
Win7 Ult x64

Thoughts?

Hey All,

Been running the latest release from, well, from whenever it got
pushed up and pidgin told me to download it :-P
Start seeing this error this morning when attempting to reconnect to
aim at work:

oscar: startOSCARSession response statusCode was 400:
http://developer.aim.com/xsd/aim.xsd";>400useTLS=1
is not allowed for non secure
requests.1263398611

The protocol prefs are the default in the Advanced tab for that
account (Use SSL, Use clientLogin, Allow simultaneous logins are all
on; login server / port is login.messaging.aol.com / 5190). For what
its worth the debug window claims that all the requests are made
against api.oscar.aol.com. So maybe this is breaking before it has a
chance to actually ping login.messaging.aol.com?

I'll be happy to provide any more details if needed.

Re: Error msg = Disabled

2010-01-13 Thread Michael Secord
You'll need to give more information. You don't log in to pidgin, you
log in to Instant Messaging accounts with Pidgin. What account are you
having an issue with? Do you get any error message(s)? What operating
system?
