Re: "Certificate Expired " notice and multiple breaks in service since Nov

2023-01-03 Thread Michael Secord
You have contact the public Pidgin support list. Pidgin doesn't run any
services, simply provides the client you're using.

You'll want to contact the owners of the server you're connecting to, a
quick glance looks like you should probably start at
https://lightwitch.org/ and try and find contact information for the
server provider there.

2020-01-09 Thread Michael Secord
1) Pidgin is just an application that connects to existing services, and
provides none itself. There's no privacy concerns there.
    a) You can find the source here if you want to verify:
https://bitbucket.org/pidgin/main/src/default/
2) Most of the services you listed no longer exist/function
(AIM/MSN/Yahoo have all been shut down), but many are supported. The
main page lists the supported protocols, and you can find third party
protocols here: https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins

3) Pidgin should work with 32-bit windows.

And yet, I do.
Really, this depends on the service and their implementation. For

Yes, for the github repo, it absolute does. If you read what dequis said

Away, the change shows up right away on her Pidgin.

I have attached a pic of a status hover from my Pidgin for her account. It

What should be the latest server version? I'll see if I can work the problem

Mark,

This is because the user has two devices that are connected to that XMPP

is overriding the away status and still showing them as available.

sure that the server Pidgin is connecting to is maintained and has

AOL (all expendable at work) but being off the corporate system is
unacceptable, so I'm now looking for a replacement generic IM client that works

2.10.9 is an old release with (I'm pretty certain known) cert issues,

A big reason for tab to maintain current functionality is the fact that

you enable this, it's likely going to give you the functionality you're
looking for.

Hi Michael!

Nice name ;)

Thanks :)

No I'm afraid you misunderstood, I'm talking about when I get a new
chat the whole window used to popup and I would see it clearly. It
came in front of any program I had open so I wouldn't miss it.

As I said on windows 8 it only flashes a bit on the program icon at
the bottom of the screen.

I wish to get the popups again if it's possible.

I did misunderstand. The option you may be looking to tweak is in the
Preferences "Interface" tab. Check the "conversation window" options and
make sure that "minimize new conversation windows" isn't checked and
"hide new conversation windows" is set to "never" and this might get you
what you want.

Best regards

Steam chat and Skype are both non-open, non-standard protocols.
There is a plugin for Skype that states it should integrate the chat
with Pidgin, though Skype has to be running in the background, and
isn't officially supported. To my knowledge there isn't a plugin for
Steam like there is for Xfire, but I could be wrong.

Google chat should be pretty easy, there's even a protocol option
for it in the accounts menu

This is also likely not a possibility due to the difference in architecture

Windows RT is a small market and has already been announced by Microsoft
that it will not continue as they are merging that platform with the
Windows Phone platform.

Sadly, Windows 8 RT is not the same operating system as regular Windows

Personally, I'd suggest something XMPP based like openfire. They have
servers for both *nix and windows, at least win setup was very
straightforward and pidgin worked without issues. Pair that with something
like OTR and secure ports/protocol and you should be pretty set I imagine.

2013-07-21 Thread Michael Secord
As this started this week, it's likely due to the fact that Microsoft moved
live messenger to Skype and have finally shut down their old services.
There's no way around this currently and pidgin will not support Skype as
the protocol is not public.

Re: problems with MSN certificate chain

2013-01-18 Thread Michael Secord
As it is, I've noticed this MSN popup the last few days, but today I
haven't been prompted with it, so maybe the issue is already resolved on
MSN's side?

Ethan Blanton wrote:

David Woolley spake unto us the following wisdom:

Looking at the certificate, I think the problem is that the

the contacts.msn.com domain (omega.contacts.msn.com) seems to be a
wild card certificate (Subject: *.contacts.msn.com).

Although the lack of wild card may be a problem, based on off list
information from Matthias, it looks like Pidgin doesn't use the OS
root certificates, even on Windows.

Pidgin doesn't use the OS root certificates *only* on Windows.

Re: TAKE ME OFF OF THIS EMAIL CHAIN

2013-01-07 Thread Michael Secord

Well,

First off you don't have to "yell" at a community support list that
can't do what you want in the first place.

Second, as you were told previously, at the bottom of every email
that you receive is a link to unsubscribe, with text that even
mentions this. I've included a screenshot to illustrate this for
you.

my old screen name works fine and in pidgin same computer weather in
xubuntu or xp pro will not send a text message to a cell phone, and if
the computer is hooked up with cat5 pidgin works fine.

after 7 or 8 years of using linux, ubuntu 5.04 - 12.04 and open sourse
software i have never ran across a rude person or unhelpful person till
i ran across Ethan.

What it comes down to is Ethan is correct. AOL has absolutely /no/ way
to tell what kind of connection you're using to your local network
(whether it be Cat5, wifi, tin can or otherwise). His point is still
perfectly valid.

The only however to this situation would be if for some reason you have
a network configuration that allows for differences in routing/DNS/etc
between the wired network and the wireless one which would allow for the
differences you're seeing.

He wasn't being rude, he was trying to help you by telling you that your
thought of CAT5 vs Wifi could not be the cause of your issues yet you
were insistent he was incorrect.

Simply put, being accepting rather than argumentative on a
community-driven support list for a FOSS program is going to be much
more productive for everyone involved.

showing anything odd. I was able to capture a few minutes of net
traffic with Wireshark while this was happening.

I've noticed that it doesn't matter if the person sending the messages

both. I only miss the messages if I'm using Pidgin, the official
client will catch everything.

Anyone have any ideas or anything else I should try to capture, etc to

Any idea if you had multiple clients connected when the problem was
first observed?

I haven't been able to figure out the pattern, but if I leave my iPhone
and iPad (or multiple pidgin installations) connected to my MSN account,
messages semi-randomly start going to the inactive client despite the
fact that I haven't used it for hours or days.

New messages tend to go to all connected clients, which is a good thing,
but in the middle of a conversation I'll feel like the person I'm
talking to is ignoring a question and later discover that they did
answer and it wasn't delivered to pidgin.

I've never tested to see if the official client behaves differently,
I've always just assumed it's a quirk with how MSN determines the
message destination since it happens to pidgin, Beejive and IM+.

I actually noticed the issue with Pidgin being the only connected
client, but the issue persisted with or without another client connected.

I can't say whether or not this used to happen in previous versions of
Pidgin since I used to use MSN so infrequently, but now that it's the
_only_ method of IM at my workplace, it's much more prevalent.

The official client seems to catch all incoming messages just fine. I
also noticed that sometimes it'll pick up the messages that I send from
Pidgin, while other times it will not.

As a side-note, using the MSN protocol that is built into Bittlebee
(http://bittlebee.org/) seems to work as expected thus far, though that
only equates to a few hours today.

Re: Issue after Download

2011-04-10 Thread Michael Secord

Tamara,

That is definitely the source code download, which won't do you any good
unless you have a true knowhow and need for it.

As Ethan said, Adium http://adium.im/ will be what you want. It's
more/less pidgin for OSX. While it's not actually pidgin, it is a good
replacement for it.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm just trying to download the program
to use with my multiple applications. I read that it was a good
program to use to have various IMs open and working at the same time.

Here is what I downloaded: http://pidgin.im/download/

And to answer your ending questions, I have no idea what adium is, so
I cannot know if it's a better choice for me. If it's not possible to
have the program on Mac, no worries.

Thanks for your time.

We don't distribute a Pidgin for Mac, so I suspect one of two things
has happened. Either you downloaded the source code from
pidgin.im
(which is not what you want), or you downloaded a binary from someone
else (which we do not support).

There are several ways to install Pidgin on a Mac, but none of them
are probably going to make you happy. What exactly are you trying to
do, and why do you want Pidgin on your Mac? Is it possible that Adium
(http://adium.im/) is a better choice?

The splash screen isn't really part of Pidgin itself, it is something
that the PortableApps folks have added to their package.
You'll have to ask the maintainers of that package for information
about how to tweak the spash screen.

I should also add, you can disable the splash screen on any application

To change the splash screen you need to generate your own jpg, replace
the current splash screen and recompile the launcher with NSIS. You can
get NSIS portable as well.

What's the output of your Debug log (with sensitive information

This is relevant to your issue: http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/12485

Typically this error is due to a corrupt GTK+ installation. The ticket

However, after downloading, installing v2.7.7 and rebooting, I am

Ultimately and in desperation I uninstalled Pidgin, [cold] rebooted,
defragmented and then [cold] rebooted again before reinstalling Pidgin

Furthermore, I used Internet Explorer (IE) (not my default browser) to
log in to and out of my mail server believing IE may issue the

Try logging into your email id website directly, in a browser, then

Which version of Pidgin? And what platform (I assume it's Windows, but
am not certain).

Have you applied the Windows Update Root Certificate updates that come

possible result.

Re: Prefix for mails from this list

2010-11-07 Thread Michael Secord
This has been discussed multiple times, many as of late as well. The
decision has been a unanimous "no", mainly in the fact that /most/ email
clients (and all of those worth their weight in code) can handle mailing
lists via the headers that are used and thus can be filtered/modified as
such, rendering a prefix/tag useless/bloated/annoying.

You will have to wait until it is updated in the repos for the N900.
There are certain tweaks that have to be made for it to run in the
desktop environment that the N900 uses. Your best bet is to remove any
traces of the version you installed and reinstall from the repo.

Your buddies are stored server side, at least in most (if not all)

If you just install Pidgin and setup your accounts in it on the new PC

You can use the info in this link to copy your entire .purple directory

Once you've installed the app, just launch it. Then use the "menu" at
