Re: How to log out and create new Pidgin account

2022-08-20 Thread Eion Robb
Hi there,

You can add multiple accounts for pidgin to use at the same time through
the Accounts->Manage Accounts screen. Then click the Add button to add the
new account. This also lets you merge buddies from two different accounts
in your buddy list. Eg you might have a buddy on both Facebook and Discord,
if you merge them together then the conversation history will also be merged

If you're still getting notifications that you aren't expecting to see, it
might be because you're closing pidgin instead of quitting it. The easiest
way to do so is to right click on the Pidgin system tray icon (you might
have to expand the system tray as windows likes to collapse it by default)
and choose Quit. There's also a Quit option from the Buddies menu from the
buddy list, but you'd need the system tray to open the buddy list

Cheers,
Eion

Hello. I have Pidgin on Windows 10 and I need to create a new account for a

When I open Pidgin and click on Join a Chat, it only shows my original

Also, after I close Pidgin, it often keeps reopening to show me a

I was hoping someone more familiar with this aspect of Pidgin was going
to answer, but really you need help from someone you trust, as this
relates to the mechanisms that are used to ensure you are really talking
to the server, not to an impostor who is then forwarding things to the
server.

It appears that only IRC and XMPP use this. I'm guessing that you are
trying to access an IRC server run by voxi.ru, but if it is actually an
XMPP one, please let us know.

The could mean:

1) someone is pretending to be the server and hoping you won't check
properly or will override security warnings;

2) Pidgin never had the CA certificate needed to verify the server - was
it working before;

3) The server has updated its server certificate which is now signed by
a new CA certificate (you may want to check you have the latest Pidgin
and have current security updates for your OS - this might be the case
if they were using a Lets Encrypt certificate, as there was a recent,
relatively chaotic, retirement of one of their CA certificates;

4) The server has a certificate that is signed by an intermediate
certificate, which they haven't sent to you, and which you didn't
already have.

There will be differences in how to add a missing CA certificate on your
side, depending on the OS, so you should tell us what that is, and as
you shouldn't take information from lightly used mailing lists at face
value, you really need someone you can trust to make sure that you don't
compromise your machine by adding a certificate that you shouldn't trust
to the extent necessary for your personal security needs.

may be useful.

Pidgin is a client which can use various messaging services, if you
cannot log in then you need to check the service in question. Pidgin
the project does not run any such service so it doesn't have accounts,
this is a peer support mailing list and we are also simply users of the

Good Morning,

My name is Erin. We have been using Pidgin as our office messenger for a

installed pidgin again but for some reason I keep getting a message that is
disable. I have set everything up exactly the same as all the other
computers but obviously with the different email address and its not having
any of it. I've accessed the email account using the details I entered and
its gaining access so it's not that I'm using the wrong password or
anything. I've attached the debug report to the window to see if anyone can
shed any light on the matter. It worked perfectly on the older PC but not
this one. The email address is accou...@treyone.co.uk
<mailto:accou...@treyone.co.uk> essentially it's a Gmail account, I've also
attached the set up window to make sure I'm doing it OK, but like I
mentioned its exactly the same as everyone else's.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Your problem is with Oracle's server, not Pidgin. No-one here has

Re: AIM Account

2017-11-07 Thread Konstantin Kharlamov
I think you probably misunderstand what Pidgin is. It's a messaging
client that is driven by community, same as this mailing list is. Though
it supports hangouts, AIM, ICQ, skype, etc; but have nothing to do with
either of those companies, and does not get any support from them in
particular.

The Pidgin account you created to use AIM is just an information local
to your PC about how to interact with a particular protocol (e.g. AIM).
It is not stored elsewhere. Imagine you wanted to use Pidgin with XMPP
on your local network — having to connect to Internet would be a major
inconvenience.

Hi Manny,

Since AIM is going away in December, you'll need to look at alternative
protocols if you want to continue to use Pidgin.  There's plenty of
options both built-in as well as available as third part plugins at
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins#AdditionalProtocols

You cannot log in to the Pidgin IM program, but you can use the Pidgin
program to log in to an IM server. It is the server that is rejecting
your login and you need to contact the people running the server. They
are completely independent of the people who maintain Pidgin, and most,
or all, of the people who use it.

People here cannot tell which server you are using so have no idea
whether they know about your server. I'd start with your IT department.

Re: Pidgin account configuration

2017-10-16 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Alejandro,

There's been a few suggestions on what you could do. You could also create
a 'portable' install of Pidgin by renaming pidgin.exe to
pidgin-portable.exe (full instructions at
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#RunningWindowsPidginFromaUSBDrivePortableMode
) or you could use the -c command line option to specify a shared .purple
folder for all the users, eg pidgin.exe -c c:\purple

Cheers,
Eion

Re: Pidgin account configuration

2017-10-16 Thread Constantine

Alejandro, oh, gosh, I've got it backwards.

Well, not with pidgin native tools, but you can do it. What you need, is
to create a symlink for all Windows accounts that would point to a
single pidgin configuration directory. Probably, you'll also want to set
a small script to run every time a new Windows user is created, which
would create the symlink for that new user.

To me it looks like a bug. E.g. on GNU/Linux pidgin saves accounts in
per-user directories (~/.purple/accounts.xml).

But wait a bit, may be someone else does have an answer.

Pidgin account configuration

2017-10-16 Thread Alejandro GC
Hi! I have to manage a pidgin account in a high school and I'm trying to figure
it out how to create a single pidgin account and no matters what session I open
in the same windows computer the pidgin account will be the same in one user or
another.

Lets say I create with the windows user "A" and a pidgin account named "ABCD",
I want if I open a new windows session with the user "A", "B", "C" or "D" in
the same computer, the pidgin account openned will be "ABCD" but I want to do
it automatically because is a high school and a lot of people use the same
computer, I dont want to open session with a user and go to pidgin to open the
"ABCD" session.

Thanks for your time and best regards.

There is no account needed to have a licence for Pidgin, as anyone receiving
the software automatically gets a licence.

I suspect you are confusing Pidgin with the instant messaging service that you
access with it. That will be provided by a completely different organisation,
and may well be something you have to pay for.

Pidgin is an instant messaging service. A message that failed using one
connection may be stale by the time that that times out. I do not believe that
Pidgin has any such alternative routing capability.

Re: Gmail Account Not Authorized

2017-10-03 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Eric,

"Not Authorized" is just a fancy way of saying "incorrect password". In
the case of Hangouts/Gtalk/gmail this means you need to set up an app
password, see
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Protocol%20Specific%20Questions#gtalk_2fa
for more info about that.

Alternatively, you can switch to the Hangouts plugin which has a few
benefits over just using XMPP (see
https://bitbucket.org/EionRobb/purple-hangouts/wiki/Differences_with_XMPP
for more info) including a different auth method that doesn't need you to
set up an app password.

Cheers,
Eion

No, because it isn't a pidgin account, it is an account on Oracle's, we

We are advised that people within the Oracle network can use

Hi there,

@ isn't a valid character for an XMPP username so it needs to be escaped as
you've found. The escaping for it is going to be very specific to each XMPP

Hi there,

Can you email through the settings you've used to set up your pc20.net
account (excluding the password)? Can you also get a debug log as you
connect: to do this, open the Debug Window (from the buddy list,
Help->Debug Window), then reconnect to the pc20.net account by clicking the
checkbox next to it, then copy-paste the output of the Debug Window into an
email back to us. That should help track down where the error is happening.

getting pinged by my google account

2016-09-21 Thread Deniz Turkmen
Hi,

As of 9/20 Pidgin has been showing a 127-character long message that is
coming from my account every few seconds (i.e. the sender is same as the
account defined under Accounts, which is a gmail.com account)
The very first message was just 4 characters: c-hi
After this, every few seconds new IM pops up with the same 127-character
message. It starts with gcm_bg- and the whole thing seems to be
encoded/encrypted.
I have hangouts installed on my other devices which uses the same account,
but no other IM clients.

When I pull info on this sender it lists things like:

Resource: Messaging (have bunch of these with different numbers)
Priority: 0
Status: Away

Resource: UserXX (This is the one sending the IMs)
Priority: 0
Status: Availble
Idle: 2 seconds

Resource: # (This seem to be associated with my Pidgin client)
Priority: 1
Status: Available
Client: Pidgin 2.10.9 (libpurple 2.10.9)

Is this something related to Google? Can I filter these IMs? Or can I
identify who the UserXX is?

Thank you.

Can't connect to Google Talk (Gmail or Apps account) with Pidgin

2015-12-22 Thread Rudie Dirkx
I've tried XMPP and Google Talk as protocol. Neither can connect. I
abhor Gmail's chat client, or Chrome's chat extension. Pidgin used to
work (even a few weeks ago, but I re-installed Windows). On one
occasion I got an email from Google about stopped external client
access because of outdated security stuffs, but that was only once,
and I've tried a dozen times the last days.

I have a Gmail account, which can't connect, and a Google Apps
account, which also can't connect. Both work fine with the Chrome
GTalk extension, but I hate that.

I've read and followed
https://pidgin.im/pipermail/support/2015-February/028685.html but no
success.

Anyone had and solved this problem? Many thanks.

This is probably because of an issue in Oracle's internal network.
Oracle employees very often make the mistake of contacting us thinking
we can help. You'll have to ask Oracle IT support.

Does any company documentation suggest that you contact us when Pidgin
isn't working?

You should enable encryption on the server.

 or *User not authorized*.

The server logs should tell you why this is happening. If you don't have
in-band registration enabled on it, you have to add the user directly
(through the command line, etc.) rather than through Pidgin.

Hi,

XMPP is the protocol used by Gmail, the Gmail protocol in the protocols
option is just a convenience way to setup easily a gmail account, but it
is not really a protocol so it switch to XMPP after creation.
