facebook chat

2009-11-15 Thread josh lefkowitz
I have been running Pidgin with Linux mint for a while now, but all of the
sudden the facebook chat plugin i was using no longer works. I keep getting
a facebook chat service unavailable message. For a while if i had facebook
open in firefox and someone messaged me a chat window from pidgin would open
up and appear as an available friend but no one else would show up. Is
there an update or something that might have screwed this up?

Facebook Chat

2011-02-03 Thread KaNeka Nuedov
Help please, I seem to be able to connect to AIM, ICQ, MSN, MySpaceIM, and
Yahoo, but I am unable to connect to Facebook Chat. Below are the steps I've
taken in an attempt to set up my Facebook Chat:

1.. I logged out and back in again on Facebook so I know I have the log-in
email address username and password correct.
2.. I have tried using my Facebook username on the account login options
instead of the email address, but that does not work either.
3.. I have also deleted the Facebook account entry, installed
pidgin-facebookchat-1.69 exe in the Pigin folder, installed the files, and
re-did the Facebook account entry.
1.. Question: what is supposed to go in the account 'Resource' entry? The
facebook account is the only one requesting a 'Resource' entry.
1.. I receive the error message: ... [my log-in email
address]@chat.facebook.com Facebookchat Network disabled. Invalid XMPP ID
Can you please advise me how to properly set up my Pigin Facebookchat account?

Thank you ...

Facebook chat

2011-03-27 Thread onebree
Hello. Last week I tried the tech support webchat, and while everyone was
nice, nothing helped.

I am using the most updated version of pidgin and would like to enable a
Facebook Chat XMPP account. No matter what settings I change/enter, the
buddy list has a notification saying "Not authorized."

I have created an account username on Facebook.com. I have also waited
several days for the username to fully integrate into the Facebook server,
as recommended by some people in the webchat.

I would like to stop using AIM+Facebook when possible, and fully integrate
with the Pidgin interface. Can I have a walk-through on how to tackle
enabling a Facebook Chat account?

Furthermore, people in the webchat linked me to several help articles, none
of which were useful. All of the articles refer to older versions of pidgin.
I know this because there is no check box for SSL, but rather a drop down
menu for encryption/authentication.

Thank you.

Hi Josh. We don't maintain the Facebook Chat plugin for Pidgin.
You'll have to follow its development at
http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/ I'd make sure you're
using the most recent version, and maybe try reporting a new issue.

Thanks,

This almost certainly means that you did not enter the information
correctly.

Make sure that you put only the portion before the @ in the username
field, and only the portion after the @ in the domain field. Also,
make sure that you are using the username provided on the facebook
page, which may be a numeric ID. If you still cannot log in, delete
your pidgin facebook account and recreate it. If you still cannot log
in, try changing your password on facebook.com and then changing your
Pidgin facebook password to match.

Facebook chat history

2011-12-12 Thread kiani lannoye

Hello,

I have a question about the pidgin facebook plugin.

Is it possible to configure pidgin so that when you type something in
facebook (on the webpage), it also comes in the chat history of pidgin?

(now I'm using a plugin that remembers the history of your last conversation
in pidgin, and pastes it into your current conversation, but when you type
something online in facebook chat, it will not show up in your chat history
of pidgin)

Kind regards,

kdlannoy

The facebook plugin is not supported here, and is not necessary, as you

Facebook Chat Problems

2012-06-07 Thread Matthew Frank
Hi,

I installed Pidgin after a hard drive wipe. Before, I had successfully
used Pidgin with Facebook chat. Now, I get the Not Authorized message.
 I've triple-checked my password, and it's right. Triple-checked that I'm
using the correct user name, and that's right as well. Domain remains
chat.facebook.com.

What else could be the issue?

Thanks!

Error enabling Facebook chat

2011-04-23 Thread onebree
Hello. A month ago I sent an email to tech support about an issue I
encounter when enabling Facebook Chat for pidgin. I got a response asking
for me to clarify my info. When I did (about 2 weeks ago), I have yet to get
a response.

I am using the most updated version of pidgin and would like to enable a
Facebook Chat XMPP account. No matter what settings I change/enter, the
buddy list has a notification saying "Not authorized." I have created an
account username on Facebook.com. I have also waited several days for the
username to fully integrate into the Facebook server, as recommended by some
people in the webchat. I would like to stop using AIM+Facebook when
possible, and fully integrate with the Pidgin interface.

Here are the settings I have within pidgin
*Basic*
**Protocol - XMPP
Username - onebree (what my FB username is)
Domain - chat.facebook.com
Resource - BLANK
Password - PASSWORD
Create new account on server - unchecked

*Advanced*
Connection security - use encryption if available
Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams - checked
Connect port - 5222
Connect server - chat.facebook.com
File transfer points - proxy.eu.jabber.org
BOSH URL - BLANK
Show custom smileys - checked

*Proxy*
Proxy type - none

The original person from tech support (as well as users on a pidgin web
chat) linked me to several websites. None of the online step-by-step guides
helped, as I seem to have a newer or different version of Pidgin.

Thank you.

I've been using Pidgin for Facebook Chat for many months now. It is working
pretty well for that. See:

* http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/12527/easily-add-facebook-chat-to-pidgin/

* https://www.google.com/search?q=facebook%20pidgin

* http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=371950911048&id=210368314792

Facebook Chat uses the standard and open XMPP/Jabber protocol.

Re: Facebook Chat Away Message

Hi Cassandra. Pidgin only sends auto replies on IM protocols that have
historically featured auto replies (and the "auto-reply" preference
only pertains to those IM protocols). Specifically, only AIM and
Zephyr. This is because there's no way to indicate that a message is
an auto-reply on other IM protocols, and they tend to confuse people.

I think the purple plugin pack might include a plugin that adds auto
reply functionality for other protocols. More info at

I'd be cautious about doing this on Facebook anyway, as this will make
Facebook think you are active, which adjusts how you appear via the web
interface, but it also prevents notifications from being sent to other
devices.

So for example, if you were using Facebook IM on another PC or mobile
device, that device would stop showing notifications every time your
pidgin autoresponds.

Facebook really isn't built for away messages.

You can certainly create your own logs with pidgin, however, it will not
re-create the Facebook feature which combines your chat history from
multiple clients/interfaces into one consolidated view, that aspect is
propriety to Facebook's own implementation.

I didn't see anything on the developer's chat page about a replacement for
xmpp. I suspect someone will try to reverse engineer messenger's protocol,
and I hope they succeed. But even if they get something workable, it still
won't be as good as an api provided by and openly documented by Facebook.

Do you get an error message?

The instructions for Pidgin at
https://www.facebook.com/sitetour/chat.php are pretty good (with the
exception that you don't need to set the Connect Server in step 3, and
personally I think you're better of without it).

I don't know in what circumstances you need to use an App Password. I
suspect it's required if your Facebook account is configured to
require some sort of 2-factor authentication.

Still not able to login. Any help, will be much appreciated.

This almost looks like a network/firewall/router/content filtering
problem of some sort. Are you able to connect to other XMPP servers?
Is it possible some corporate or school firewall is blocking outgoing
connections to port 5222? Or maybe a local software firewall is
blocking it?

FYI my Facebook account is currently hanging while connecting. It's
possible our problems are related and Facebook's XMPP servers are

Facebook chat no longer stays in "group"

2011-12-12 Thread Fannie Gunton
I’ve been using Pidgin to corral all of my chats into one interface for the
last 9 months. I have general categories (family, work, etc.) that I sort
from all of my chat clients (facebook, AIM, etc.) into.

Within the last 2 weeks, I’ve noticed that my facebook chat friends are no
longer sorting. There’s a new group called “Facebook Friends” that they
are all in. If I manually resort into my other groups, the next time I log
in, they are back in the “Facebook Friends” group.

Is there any way to make them stay sorted? It’s a big enough issue, that I
may have to switch to another chat client.

Thank you!

David Coulson wrote:

I've encountered this as well. I believe it's happening because of
Facebook's new "lists" feature, which allows people to group their
friends in lists. (Though the actual change is fairly recent.) In the
chat configuration tool, you tell Facebook Chat to only make you
available via chat to everyone, only those in a certain list, or
everyone _except_ those in a certain list. If you choose the first or
third options, then the contacts that show up in your XMPP client (as
was said, this is not Pidgin-specific) will have the group name
"Facebook Friends" and unfortunately there's nothing you can do about that.

However, I think that if you choose the second method, the group name
may have the same name as the list you've chosen. This requires you to
then have a list with the same name as the group you want in XMPP, and
also (and this is the problem) manually maintain the list of people you
want to chat with in a list. So it's probably not worth it.

In short, without manual intervention each time you add a new friend,
there's nothing you can do about the group name.

Whatever happened is new behaviour for Facebook; I've used Facebook's
lists feature since I started on Facebook a couple years ago and until
recently contacts always showed up in groups. It stopped while I was
travelling, I haven't touched any privacy settings since then, and I've
always been unavailable to Facebook chat with a certain group of people
who don't use it responsibly right from when I first started using it.

I can't imagine why Facebook would have made this change, although it
might be due to the fact that they're automatically creating lists and
users might have whined that it creates "duplicates", but this is a
total shot in the dark.

Either way, there's nothing pidgin can currently do about it. A possible
implementation to handle this better might allow for locally overriding
of groups, similar to how you can locally alias a user. However, I can't
say that I'd use it myself, I'd rather have a consistent crappy
interface when roaming between machines and clients than an inconsistent
hack around the underlying problem.

Yes, the forced group name is a new change (I saw it last week or so),
just switched on recently (what was it, last week?). Facebook's online
documentation for connecting Facebook Chat with XMPP clients (not
Pidgin-specific ones) have screenshots that don't show the forced
"Facebook Friends" group name, so even their help pages haven't updated.

I don't know _why_ they did it either, but if it was a deliberate
choice, I would guess something along the lines of what you suggest.

Like you said, unfortunately, nothing Pidgin can do about it.

Depending on whether or not your employer supports "split tunneling", you
may or may not be able to access chat services while VPN'd in.

Please contact your network administrator and see if there are any
limitations to using XMPP while connected to VPN.

If the administrator is not familiar with what type of communication XMPP

Note that the far more probable situation is that the
username/password are simply wrong. 99 times out of 100, "Not
Authorized" means precisely this. Try re-entering the password and/or
recreating the account.

Re: pigdin xmpp stopped working for facebook chat

2013-04-11 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
Michal,

Normally, "Unauthorized" means your username or password are incorrect.

Alternately, you can try changing the port on the Advanced tab to use 443.
The default port of 5222 can cause problems behind certain firewalls.

For troubleshooting, you may want to make sure you are using the correct
username, which can be found here:
https://www.facebook.com/username

Last, deleting the account from Pidgin and then setting it back up from
scratch will ensure the proper settings have been entered for XMPP.

Facebook - Pidgin unreliable ever since recent facebook chat changes.

2011-07-10 Thread Les Fenison
Not all chat transmissions come thru to pidgin from Facebook. When in
chat, if I open up both the facebook web page and use pidgin to chat. I
see some responses coming back from the other person on the facebook web
chat that never show up on pidgin.

I have done the same using mobile applications such as facebook for
iphone, and friendly for ipad. These apps do get everything as does
the facebook web page chat. Only pidgin misses incoming chat lines.

The severity is about 1 line out of every 5 that is missing.

If you are using XMPP, you really need to provide information from the
debug log.

Maybe it is logging now and I can go find the last event?

I don't know if it will log the incoming packets, but it is accessed
via the help menu, it's just a window.

You could post the contents here, and maybe show the difference between
it and the FB chat on the web, assuming it's all something you're happy
to post to a public list.

I will do that but it may be some time before I can. Meanwhile. I do
have more details that may give a clue.

1. It only happens with one person, who happens to be the only person I
chat with that is located on the opposite side of the planet from me.
(Cyprus) Might have something to do with the server he is hitting and
path to get here. (doubtful, see #3 & #4)

2. The person on the other end is using Facebook for Android.

3. I have two instances of Pidgin 2.9.0 logged in on two machines here
at one time. One machine has ALL the chat data, while the one I am
sitting at is missing data.

4. I also have the Facebook website open monitoring the chat which is
how I knew I was missing data.

This is happening on other IM clients too... Seems that may have
something to do with Facebook protocol and not pidgin itself.

Well, it looks like you need to compare these two machines and see
what's different. It does not appear to be the other systems involved.

Is it even a good idea to run pidgin on multiple machines logged
into the same facebook account at the same time?

Not only am I seeing
data missing from one machine or the other but also it seems to be very
confused as to if people are online or offline. The system that i was
complaining about that was missing data, shows my buddy as being offline
and he has been for 6 hours. Facebook and my mobile devices also agree
that he is offline. Yet the other system that wasn't missing the data,
still thinks he is not only ONline but also not idle.

Also, I
discovered that the two machines ARE NOT running the same versions.

Version 2.9.0 is missing the data occasionally yet accurately reports
when the person is on/off line.

Version 2.7.7 Doesn't miss any data
but inaccurately reports hen the person is on/off line.

It shouldn't be an issue. XMPP handles this in general, and I certainly
do this with Facebook in particular.

When messages don't show up, are you using another client to chat, or
are messages ever missed by the client you've been using at that moment?

My experience with Facebook's XMPP is that it works reasonably well as
long as you just use one connection at a time, with the other connected
client sitting idle. In my case, it's usually two pidgins and a
Beejiive (iPhone XMPP client)

I don't use the Facebook web interface at all, it might add some
complexity to the equation.

Hard to say. With XMPP, when you have multiple simultaneous logins,
the server can decide which instance(s) will receive a message - it
may not send all messages to all instances. We have no idea what
facebook has decided to do with their XMPP implementation.

This may be a coincidence.

Pidgin, Facebook chat plugin, and sending to a messenger "group"

2019-12-31 Thread Noudess Icescout
I have typically used facebook messenger.  Once I add 3 of my friends to
a conversation, that conversation lasts forever until I close it.

I want to use pidgin instead.  I have installed it, as well as the
facebook plugin, and I can chat with facebook friends.  But I can't find
a way to send to 3 friends at once.  I made a pidgin group, but that
doesn't seem to help, it seems more like an organizational tool.

I have noticed, that now, if I send a message in my facebook
conversation (in facebook) a pidgin chat window pops up and I can use
that forever thereafter until I close it.

Is there any way to initiate this from within pidgin?

Hi Noudess,

You can start a group chat by right clicking on a buddy and choosing
"Initiate Chat". The Facebook prpl is a little different to the others that
you'll need to pick the other two people from a popup first before you can
start chatting with them. After that, you can invite more people from the
Conversation->Invite menu.

Cheers,
Eion

How the buddy list is updated and a bud in facebook chat plugin

2009-12-21 Thread W.H. Kalpa Pathum
How does Pidgin update it's buddy list? Does it connect with a server
to retrieve the contact list in defined time intervals?

There are some bugs in the facebook chat plugin. Firstly it doesn't
synchronize with the online buddies in facebook. It doesn't resolve
the buddy name instead it shows some numbers. Further it opens
seperate chat windows for every message sent or received. So that it
has become a little annoyed and I hardly use that plugin.

Version :
Pidgin 2.6.4-2.fc12 in Fedora 12
purple-facebookchat.i686 0:1.63-1.fc12

It would be much better if Pidgin can use GNOME keyring or some other
secure way to store the passwords other than plain text. Yeah it would
be hard to use GNOME keyring as Pidgin is a multi platform IM client.
But it's always better to have a better security.

Due to these reasons I now actually use meebo the web based IM client.

But I've used Pidgin as my default IM client for years and I still
love it. It's sad to notice that Fedora 12 has dropped Pidgin as the
default IM client. Anyway hope that pidgin will develop further and
dominate among the IM clients as before. Then I'll also be willing to
shift to Pidgin again.

Thanks in advance.

Best of luck for Pidgin
