Pidgin not working

2009-09-29 Thread Kellie DiPaola
Hi. I am trying to use Pidgin with quicktate transcription company and I am
having errors pop up that say "you required encryption, but it is not
available on this server." How do I fix this? I have the debug window open
right now and I have pasted the code in this email.

Guifications not working?

2011-04-04 Thread GGCrono

I recently upgraded, by pure necessity, to Windows 7 from Windows XP. But
ever since I have, Guifications doesn't work.

Everything appeared to go okay with the installation, it appears in my list
of plugins, I can configure it, it says it's enabled, but the pop-ups simply
do not pop-up. I have the latest version of Pidgin, and tried un- and
re-installing Guifications several times.

Does anyone know what the trouble might be?

'key not working

2011-11-27 Thread Michael Bourbon
For some reason in Pidgin and ONLY in Pidgin the 'and " keys aren't working.
All it will do is make an accent mark over the following letter if
it's an appropriate
letter for an accent mark.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Pidgin a few times, even got rid of
all the registry stuff
and the .purple folder and it still won't work.
I really love Pidgin and have to use Trillian for now.
Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

You can't log in to Pidgin. Pidgin is a client, which allows you to log
in to many different instant messaging services. Your problem is with
logging in to one of those services. The specific error number will be
coming from that service.

The contents of Pidgin's debug window may help identify the service and
the stage at which the process is failing, but interpreting the error
code probably requires reference to the documentation for the particular
service, or contact that service's support department.

Apart from Pidgin incorrectly masking the "Host Unknown" error, your issue
is that you need to set the Domain to *typists.quicktate.com*, not
typist.quicktate.com.

I think you have entered the "Domain" wrong on the Account settings. It
should be "typists.quicktate.com" (not "typist.quicktate.com").

OK, if you open the Accounts->Manage Accounts window, then select the
account you're using for Quicktate, click modify, then select the
Advanced tab, is Require SSL/TLS checked? If yes uncheck it and save
the account, then see if that helps.

Hmm, might be a good idea if the error message that Pidgin creates was
more descriptive of the real problem.

That probably means your password is incorrect. You will need to confirm
that with QuickTate.

As I mentioned in my other email, Kellie's issue is *not* actually a lack
of SSL support on the server, but instead that the XMPP prpl needs to first
look for an error before trying to start authentication.

Ignoring that, the message in the Buddy List reads "You required
encryption, but it is not available on this server," where the pertinent
account option is titled "Require SSL/TLS." What would you suggest?

(I'm probably going to change the account option to read "Require SSL/TLS
encryption")

Ah, so you're saying it doesn't actually do that?

Well to be honest I'm not sure but it did seem to me that something
that is due to an incorrect server name in the account settings ought
to get an error message saying something like "desired host not found"
but I also realise that maybe the error you actually get is not that
simple to parse and extract useful information.

That would be sensible, lots of less knowledgeable users won't know
that SSL/TLS involves encryption.

Whoops, what I wrote wasn't what I meant to say. Kellie's problem was the
host name mismatch. The misleading error part IS a bug. It should be
straightforward to fix that (just look for errors before trying to do other
things), although I haven't looked at the code.

The cynic in me wants to say people won't know what encryption is either
:-P. The other alternative I came up with is "Require secure connection",
but I'm unwilling to stipulate that checking that box would actually make
the connection secure (self-signed certificates, users clicking through
hostname mismatch warnings, the lack of end-to-end security, etc).

Online Status Not Working

2009-10-07 Thread Kevin Roth
Hello Pidgin Team,

I'm writing to report that several members of our organization often appear
offline when they are. Changing the status and then changing it back to
"Available" does not help. Restarting Pidgin seems to help, but is a
temporary solution. Have you had any other reports of this, and is this
something you are working to fix? Thanks for a great, free product.

Yahoo accounts not working?

Good Morning All,

Its 6:40 Am Eastern time and I have been unable to log on to any of my
Yahoo Im accounts for the past 2 hours. I have three accounts that I
use for various reasons and Pidgin tells me "Account locked:unknown
reason". All three accounts worked as late as 8:00 PM yesterday and I
wonder if Y! changed their protocol over night. There is also the
chance that Yahoo is doing some sort of weird maintenance and I will
continue to try to log on, but since I use Linux, the option of running
a Y! native messenger client is non existent.

Just wanted to make you aware of a possible issue with Yahoo.

Also include the output from the Help->Debug Window from when you try to

I've seen enough screenshots on the mailing list that I'm certain that
it does accept ones of reasonable size, however, it is usually much
better to copy down the actual text of error messages. Certainly the
debug window contents is plain text, and can be cut and pasted as such.

You've basically not provided any information. If by live chat, you are
referring to one of the brandings of the MSN chat service, I think the
only known significant problem when using Pidgin 2.7.11, is with file
transfer.

Factors that are likely to be important are:

- the version of Pidgin
- the OS and version
- the service or services that are suffering problems
- the exact wording of the error message
- whether the official client for that service works
- anything that might limit network connectivity (most businesses and
some ISPs impose restrictions)

In many cases, the contents of the debug window (in which you should
minimally obscure sensitive information) is helpful.

Hi David, this is the screen shot. There is no error message. It just

The screen shot shows an empty buddies window on what appears to be the
default Windows Vista wallpaper.

The pull down list at the bottom appears to be showing "busy" circling
dots and is labelled with "Available - Connecting".

There is no debug window content and no indication of which service it
is trying to connect to, both of which the reporter needs to supply to
stand much chance of progressing this. At the moment, one would have to
assume network connectivity (e.g. corporate firewall dropping packets)
or DNS problems, the latter possibly due to a broken DNS relay in an
ADSL (etc.) router.

A good description of the screen would have been better than a
screenshot, but for future reference, the best way of getting shot of
this screen is to use Alt-PrintScrn, paste into paint brush, and save in
PNG format.

You could suggest to make usage of XMPP/Jaber as a free and open

Why? If you want support for the Oracle use of Pidgin, you need to
contact your internal IT department. If you are using it in a personal
capacity, support is only provided over the public email list.

People on this list have no idea how Oracle is organised internally.
However we get large numbers of Oracle people thinking they are
contacting internal support. When you do find them, please re-iterate
that they are not educating users into the correct support channels.

Good afternoon Mr Scola,

To better help our understanding of why Oracle employees seek the
Pidgin mailing list for help could you please answer the simple
question of how you found out about using the mailing list for help?

With that information we might be able to better direct future Oracle employees.

Hi Mocanu,

Creating an account on the Pidgin website is only for using the Pidgin

purple-googlechat not working

2022-10-11 Thread torsui
Hi,

I'm not sure how to contact the actual dev of the plugin but since day 1,
I've had issues trying to connect pidgin to the new gchat. Sometimes when I
bring my computer back from sleep mode, pidgin refuses to connect, or
reconnects after hours of no connection all at once. Usually the only
consistent way to reconnect to gchat is to restart my entire laptop, and
even then that hasn't worked the last few days. Any ideas how to go about
troubleshooting?

Thanks!

Groups are shared among all accounts. You must have a disabled
account which has buddies in that group; do delete the group, you will
either have to delete the disabled account, or enable it before
deleting the group.

You've neglected to mention with what protocol this is occurring.

If AIM/ICQ, then yes, there are various known problems like that currently
(believed, AFAIK, to be server-side issues). Enabling "Use clientLogin" on
the advanced tab of the Modify Account dialog may help (this will be the
default in the next version of Pidgin).

File Transfer is not working

2010-02-08 Thread Michael Schröder
Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with the pidgin file transfer.

If I have the File-Transfer Default-Proxy activated,
I can't either send or receive files.

If I delete the File-Transfer Default-Proxy,
I can send File's, but receiving files is still not possible.

Further Description:
I accept the incoming File request from a contact.
Pidgin creates a plain File with the exact name.
The file is empty and has a size of 0 KB.
I tried this on different IM-Platforms, last on a self hosted Openfire XMPP
Server.

I'm looking forward to your answers,
Michael

Is this Windows or Linux?

For Windows there is a FAQ entry you should read.

For linux the theme control plugin should work just fine depending
on your environment and what options are you trying to change. Things like
interface font and the like may not work in recent GNOME/etc. environments
as the environment settings will be taking priority and will need to be
changed from there.

No, that's not scrollback, scrollback is the buffer of previous
messages, whatever it contains. Load the "History" plugin.

Thank you, that was the solution. Thank you!

I had the "History" feature working before, so I must have worked out how
to do this once before. It's a sure sign that I'm losing my grip as I get
older.

Pidgin is not a system. You are using Pidgin, which is a software
package, to connect to some system. You need to ask the maintainers
of that system.

I think the real issue is that no one I have talked to today has been able
to use msn, hotmail, etc. accounts that had been previously set up and
working. No, it is not Pidgin per se, and Pidgin is not the "carrier, but
does anyone know of changes that MSFT might have made? If I recall a few
years ago MSFT made some changes and for a period of time you could not use
any of the accounts using the Pidgin application - there were some
incompatibilities.

After Microsoft acquired Skype, and tried to convert all of its MSN
Messenger users to Skype accounts, everyone's ability to use MSN
Messenger accounts with Pidgin just seems to stop working at a random
point in time.
You -may- be able to 'fix' it by logging into those accounts with the
official Skype client, then seeing if the accounts will work normally
with Pidgin afterward. No guarantees, unfortunately.

I have (had) a Skype account and a MS$ accout xxx...@hotmail.com;
I logged in now for the 1st time into Skype using the MS$ account and
they combined now somehow the old Skype account with the MS$ account and I can
only login into Skype now with the xxx...@hotmail.com
credentials.

Pidgin tries to use the MS$ credentials, but can't sign in. The --debug
log is attached. My Pidigin version is 2.10.9 on FreeBSD 11-CURRENT.

We are logged out, I think. It's of no use to cry. We should work for
OpenSource solutions and services.

That I could not login was caused by some additional security question
because it was the 1st time that I logged in from this IP; I managed
this by signing in with a browser and can now connect to the MS$ account

The ApplicationId is defined in libpurple/protocols/msn/contact.h as

#define MSN_APPLICATION_ID "CFE80F9D-180F-4399-82AB-413F33A1FA11"

it looks like this is not valid / accepted anymore by MS$

I followed a hint in this page:

http://messengergeek.wordpress.com/2014/11/12/most-third-party-messenger-clients-have-gone-offline-temporarily/

and changed the ID to "484AAC02-7F59-41B7-9601-772045DCC569", recompiled
pidgin 2.10.10 from the official sources and it works again.

A short note on this for Ubuntu or Linux users (I normally use FreeBSD):

I've compiled Pidgin on the Ubuntu 14.04 laptop of my wife and it turned out
that the normal Ubuntu distribution of Pidgin is installed below
/usr/lib, while your compilation from source will end up below
/usr/local/lib; especially the libpurple.so will be in the way and your
new compiled Pidgin will not work with MSN until you 'atp-get remove ...'
pidgin *and* the libpurple packages.
