Filters

2014-05-23 Thread Roger Fink
Do the message filters in SeaMonkey work in newsgroups? (they should
because the program lets you set them up).

There is an annoying amount of spam in the Mozilla support groups I
check from time to time (SM, FF & TB), and the filters I set up seem to
do absolutely nothing.

What are you filtering on? If you set a filter for the spammer's email
address, that won't work because he keeps changing them.

Saving Posts Freezes(?) SM 2.26 Mac.

2014-05-23 Thread Rufus

I've seen this a few time now...if I'm trying to save a NG post to an
on-disk Folder by drag and drop, SM Mail seemingly freezes, but I can
still use the Browser, click around Mail, mark a NG Read, etc. All this
while a *blue* "spinning pizza-wheel of death" is spinning.

And whassup with the *blue* pizza wheel vice the OX X default rainbow
one? Is this another instance of SM stepping on a standard OS X
interface activity? No other app on my machine alters the
wait-wheel...not one!

Neither of these were happening prior to SM 2.26 Mac.

Yes, filters work. As far as I know, you need to set the filters
specifically for each group. I do not think they work 'globally'.

I set them for each server/Account, and they work for all Subscriptions

Thanks for all the various responses. I've concluded that I've been
using the filters incorrectly, but on the other hand, using them
"correctly" seems hardly worth the effort.

In an ideal implementation, the filter would automatically dispose of
the offending message for all subgroups (such as Thunderbird, SeaMonkey
and Firefox) once the user has downloaded the message from server to
hard drive. As the saying goes, "If we can send a man to the moon"

What I find myself having to do, which I assume is normal, is go to each
of the three groups and run the filter from the dropdown menu.

The Shagnasty Eyeball Concept is starting to look good.

Danny,

Yes, that's true, as a rule they are constantly changing, but for quite
some time now there have been ongoing postings in upper case Italian or
Spanish with the word "PEDOFILO" as part of the subject, or part of
"from", or both. This has been going on for over a month. I realize
making suggestions is easy, but it would be nice to get rid of the

It's easy to do. If you download headers and see a batch of Subject lines
written in Italian and all upper-case, just glaze over the eye and move on
to the next message. Just don't click the spam to download the hundreds of
lines of whatever is in the body of the message. I've never seen a single
one of them.

By tomorrow, it will be an automatic reaction. Think of all the time you

You can set them for news.mozilla.org or each newsgroup. Here are a few
of mine that mostly do the trick (for me):

name="Undisclosed recipients:;"
enabled="yes"
type="20"
action="Delete"
condition="OR (\"to\",contains,Undisclosed recipients:;)"

name="Injection-info: googlegroups.com"
enabled="yes"
type="20"
action="Delete"
condition="AND (\"injection-info\",contains,googlegroups.com)"

name="Organization: http://groups.google.com";
enabled="yes"
type="20"
action="Delete"
condition="AND (\"organization\",contains,groups.google.com)"

name="googlemail.com"
enabled="yes"
type="20"
action="Delete"
condition="OR (from,contains,googlemail.com)"

Granted you'll filter out some valid posts from googlegroups - several
of the devs use GG, but I figure that if they can't use nntp or list
then it doesn't bother me to filter them out as well.
