I realize that some users, like yourself, don't use an antivirus yet
report no problems
for years. My experience has been the opposite and I now wouldn't be
without both firewall
and antivirus, no even to solve this pesky slowness problem. Perhaps
the virus danger
level depends on what programmes you install, what you use your

you go on the net - everyone is different in that regard, and your
activities may have

kept you at very low risk for some reason.

As for ZA slowing things down, snoozing the firewall and/or antivirus
through the system
tray icon results in very little improvement. However, today I
thought I'd try the toolbar
option that allows you to restart with add-ons disabled. Surprised to
see from the window
that pops up that this actually is how to restart SM in safe mode,
something I had read
about but had always assumed referred to the OS safe mode. SM could
do with a bit of
clarification about this. Anyway, the result was that SM started
loading in around 9
seconds instead of the recent 60 seconds or more, and this continued
a number of times
when SM was started normally from the desktop icon, so the problem
seems to have stopped.
Various other programmes and utilities are also loading faster as
they used to. The
strange thing is that nothing seems to have changed with what SM
chooses to call the
Add-ons, actually extensions or plugins, which are not the same
thing. I have no
extensions. As for the plug-ins, some were previously set to
automatic, some to manual,
and a couple disabled - none of that changed after I carried out the
above, yet the slow
loading problem disappeared. All very mysterious and frustrating, to
say nothing of time

consuming, Sigh.

Thanks for the update, Null.
Interesting that it is good with a normal start after a safe mode start.
Oh, and I always try no firewall with the cable unplugged or wifi
turned off.

Well, if you choose the OS safe mode at boot, the next boot will be
normal, so it would perhaps make sense for the SM safe mode to behave
similarly. Of course, an important difference is that the later puts up
window with a set of radio button options which you can also select
before going into safe mode, such as deleting all bookmarks. Of course,
the mystery is exactly what happened when I selected "Restart with
Add-ons Disabled", on the toolbar drop-down, ignored the radio button
options, and then proceeded to a reload in safe mode. Nothing seemed to
have changed when I later looked at the add-ons, but not only SM but
also FF are now loading very much quicker.

Good point about pulling the cable when testing "no firewall" - so easy
to do and ensures no risk.

Other programs, like Notepad, showed the correct default printer. So I

I loaded SM up a few times, and it stayed. I am still puzzled what

Depends on your connection speed. Is 38 MB a problem? For comparison,
2.46 was 35 MB.

The subdirectory

FileSeaMonkey Setup 2.48.exe38M 21-Jul-2017 08:32
...
Fileseamonkey-2.48.zip 48M 21-Jul-2017 08:32

I was surprised to see that the zip file was 10 MB larger -- it turns
out that's because it contains all the SeaMonkey files and folders
instead of the installer.

This will not work at all for this release assuming that you are using the
official version. If you use Linux and the version is/was provided by your
distribution just ignore. The distributor will then update it as usual.

If it comes down to doing a new build (very very very unlikely) you would need

If you do an action that destroy your profile, It will be
destroyed in
your dropbox.

It's not so difficult to copy, when SM in not running, your current
profile:
C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\ey8r9gln.default

Into per exemple this directory:
C:\MYBACKUP\SM\PROFILE\2.46\2017-july-17\

My five profiles are NOT anywhere on my C-drive. I believe I am
not the
only SeaMonkey user who has put profiles elsewhere.

To find your profiles, enter about:profiles in SeaMonkey's address
area
(URI area).

Dropbox has a directory "Apps" where some applications store their
data, each in its own folder. In case of damage DB backs-up all
versions for a month (free).

So, David, how does one 'move' a profile to another c-drive?

Will the dropbox backup occurs when SM is not running ?

When a file is not 'in use' Dropbox indexes it (creates a CRC) then
uploads it (using the CRC to make sure it matches - actually the CRC
is on each piece of 5MB or so). The backup store is done when the
file is replaced.

I hate those automatic actions ... never sure that the backup occur at a
right time.

If you are not a Dropbox user already then I may have given the wrong
impression. (I wish they had better documentation.) All your files are

on your computer AND in the Dropbox cloud. When you delete or change a
file on your computer it is changed in the cloud, plus the old file is
kept as a "backup" that can be retrieved at will (within 30 days).

An app example is Rootsmagic: install the s/w and the data is
automatically put on dropbox. https://www.rootsmagic.com/App/FAQ/

So If I could tell SeaMonkey to use c://...dropbox/qqxxyyy for my
profile then my profile would be in the cloud all the time after SM has

been closed for the day.

First, you must set your Windows default printer. Go to [Start >
Settings > Printers]. Select your preferred default printer and
right-click. From the pull-down context menu, select "Set as Default
Printer".

Then use a plain-text editor (e.g., Notepad) to edit file user.js in
your SeaMonkey profile. Insert the following:
user_pref("print_printer", "");
// default back to Windows default printer if another printer
// was selected
The semi-colon (;) at the end of the first line is mandatory. The
second and third lines are merely comments, indicated by the double
virgules (//). This is applied every time SeaMonkey is launched after a
complete termination.

Weird. I never had to use this workaround before. What happened? :(

First, you must set your Windows default printer. Go to [Start >
Settings > Printers]. Select your preferred default printer and
right-click. From the pull-down context menu, select "Set as Default
Printer".

Then use a plain-text editor (e.g., Notepad) to edit file user.js in
your SeaMonkey profile. Insert the following:
user_pref("print_printer", "");
// default back to Windows default printer if another printer
// was selected
The semi-colon (;) at the end of the first line is mandatory. The
second and third lines are merely comments, indicated by the double
virgules (//). This is applied every time SeaMonkey is launched after a
complete termination.

If your profile will be exactly in the same location on the new C-drive
where it was on your old C-drive, install SeaMonkey. Then over-write
the new profile.ini on the new C-drive with the profiles.ini your old
C-drive. Open the resulting profiles.ini file to see where your profile
was stored on your old C-drive and the Windows internal folder name
used; copy that folder from your old C-drive to the same location on
your new C-drive.

If, however, you choose to place your profile in a difference location
on the new C-drive --

1. Locate the file profiles.ini on your new C-drive as I indicated
earlier in this thread.

2. Open profiles.ini in a plain text editor (e.g., Notepad, Wordpad,
but NOT Word).

3. Where you see something like
 Name=alt
that specifies the name of the profile (here "alt") seen in the Profile
Manager or used with the -p option when launching SeaMonkey.

4. Where you see something like
Path=xxx
"xxx" is the Windows internal name of the profile folder. This is where
you indicate the new path to your moved profile, complete from the drive
letter to the Windows internal folder name. Since that will be a
complete path, then you will also need
IsRelative=0
to indicate the path is NOT relative to where your profiles.ini file is
located.

NOTE WELL: Do NOT move the file profiles.ini. SeaMonkey will look for
it only where you found it in step #1.

In my configuration, my browser is not on my C-drive; and my five
profiles are on a third drive. In my profiles.ini, I have five
instances of
[Profilen]
Name=xxx
IsRelative=0
Path=zzz
Default=1
where the "n" in Profilen is a number from 0 to 4 for my five profiles.
"xxx" is the various names of my profiles. All my paths (zzz) are
complete, not relative.

Default=1 appears to be set whenever I change profiles. You should
leave this alone if it exists. I think it determines which profile to
use if, instead of launching Firefox, you select an Internet shortcut
that causes Windows to automatically launch SeaMonkey.

Note: With a changed loacation for your profile, you might need to edit
the file prefs.js. Either do this in SeaMonkey by putting about:config
in the address area, or else terminate SeaMonkey and do this in a
plain-text editor. Each preference that refers to a Windows path needs
to be examined to determine if that path should be changed to reflect
the changed path to the profile. BE VERY CAREFUL when you do this. It
is best to backup file prefs.js before attempting to modify it.

It's not so difficult to copy, when SM in not running, your current

Dropbox has a directory "Apps" where some applications store their
data, each in its own folder. In case of damage DB backs-up all
versions for a month (free).

So, David, how does one 'move' a profile to another c-drive?

Will the dropbox backup occurs when SM is not running ?

When a file is not 'in use' Dropbox indexes it (creates a CRC) then
uploads it (using the CRC to make sure it matches - actually the CRC
is on each piece of 5MB or so). The backup store is done when the
file is replaced.
I hate those automatic actions ... never sure that the backup occur at a
right time.

I use Todo Backup:

I have three licenses. In Todo you can schedule many different kinds of
backups but I only use complete image backups. The C: (boot) drive and
the G: (programs and data) drive are imaged daily to a removable 1 Tb
USB drive. I have two of these drives: One on the system and one in the
safe deposit box at the bank. I swap them out periodically.

BTW, this has saved me several times in the past when something has gone
south, like having the C: drive die, or accidentally deleting a file.

Todo has a free version but I use Todo Backup home as it is more fully
featured.

Steps
1. Download your desired version
2. Install
3. Run
4. Schedule your backups

Slow SM due to ZA antivirus?

2017-07-25 Thread null
Been using SM for years without problems, but this year it seems to run
slower and slower. Also been running Zone Alarm free firewall +
antivirus for a very long time. There is increasing circumstantial
evidence that ZA's antivirus checking is slowing the loading of SM - and
a lot of my other programmes, too - but it is worst with SM. When run,
SM often takes a minute or more before even the browser frame appears,
and Firefox was not much better until I recently discovered how to do
what FF calls a "refresh", whereupon load speed improved considerably
compared to SM. Chrome has always loaded fast, but that's irrelevant to
my problems because I don't like it and rarely use it.

So .while it seems to slow file running and saving in general, why
would ZA so particularly affect SM in comparison with my refreshed FF?

Can't be the computer - got 2GB RAM, 3.2MHz CPU, keep the HD well
defragged, etc.

Anyone here using ZA who has a similar problem?

This will not work at all for this release assuming that you are using the
official version. If you use Linux and the version is/was provided by your

Is there an official verified working release of SM 2.48 final I can
download? Or should I wait for the auto-updater to offer me the update?

I have this http://www.seamonkey-project.org/start/ as my home page, SO
I know when I can download the full released version.

I never do an update.
I backup my profile when SM in ot running.
I download the new full version.
I uninstall my current version.
I install the new version.

I forgot. Upgrades will not work for 2.48. With the switch to new distribution
servers trying to make this work turned out to be not possible in the given
timeframe.

You can grab the full installer from here:

https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/seamonkey/releases/2.48/
If it comes down to doing a new build (very very very unlikely) you would need
to download again and reinstall but nothing which would be problematic.
Please backup your profile before upgrading in case you want to go back. There
were some changes in the Mozilla code which might break older add-ons.

How to make an email into a task

2017-07-25 Thread Richmond via support-seamonkey
I thought this would be easy. I have installed Lightning 5.4. I am using
SM 2.49.1 which I compiled. I want to make an email into a task, but I
can't see any way to do it.

Also I suspect this version of lightning isn't going to work
properly. When I display the calendar it gets stuck in a loop and
everything seems slow down.

(I don't think safe mode or a new profile are going to be any use here).

64 bit linux.
